Another Mexican Cruise Report

Just returned Sunday (6/1/08) from a seven-night Mexican Riviera cruise on the Magic ship. It was my second Disney cruise, following a three-night Wonder cruise four years ago to Nassau and Castaway Cay.

Simply put, it was an astounding adventure, surpassing my expectations after the earlier trip. I seemed to be one of the very few aboard traveling solo. Cruise director Brent Davis, a friendly and extremely humorous Aussie, was Johnny on the Spot, spreading good cheer and information everywhere he went.

My three shore excursions, while OK, were very low on my list of favorite aspects of the vacation. Port of call #1 (Cabo) took me on a snorkeling trip. It was a beautiful day, the water was pretty clear and warm (78 degrees) and everything went off without a hitch. There wasn't THAT much to see, as compared to my Bahamas snorkeling adventure, which was loaded with sea life. All you got to see in Mexico was a few pretty fish; the ocean floor was nothing but sand. It was a relatively fun time, but unremarkable. (I find the technological engineering marvel of the Magic ship to be far more interesting than any fish.)

Port of call #2 was Mazatlan. I chose an off-road dune buggy shore excursion, pairing up with a guy who knew a lot more about cars than I do. Five of the buggies followed a guide through a very dusty back trail...until our car died 10 minutes into the trip, due to a distributor problem. We unfortunately had to ride with another driver, meaning that neither me or my companion could drive. (We were later reimbursed for the trouble, although I had to whine at Guest Services.) I wouldn't recommend this excursion simply because the cars weren't kept up particularly well.

Port of call #3 was Puerto Vallarta, and for this city I opted for a city tour. It was pleasant enough. I felt our guide kept taking us to places where we could shop at stores owned by his personal amigos, one jewelry shop in particular. Again, I happened to be largely unimpressed by the tour as opposed to all the ship had to offer, so you may take my observations with a grain of salt. There was some pretty scenery to be taken in, and some local authentic knicknacks to be purchased, but I had much more fun on the ship.

On board, the fun never stopped. Inexplicably, I won two games of bingo, raking in about $270 total (minus about $90 I'd invested in the games). Natalie handled the bingo emcee chores with grace and inventiveness; it would have been fun to attend even if you weren't playing, just to experience her showmanship. I learned how to do both paper and towel origami, which was endless fun. At night, I attended evening performances by Tim Moss, a jazz pianist who took requests at the Sessions nightclub. He was exceptionally friendly and genial. On his night off, we were treated to a terrific Billy Joel tribute show by Adam Stout, an absolutely wonderful singer who also did a number of great Broadway songs.

Of the live musical stage shows in the Walt Disney Theater, I skipped The Golden Mickeys (having seen it before on the Wonder), but took in Twice Charmed, which was a very delightful and tuneful sequel of sorts to Cinderella. It's the best show I've seen on Disney Cruise Lines; I can't recommend it highly enough. (Only debit: They've GOT to stop selling caramel popcorn in those cellophane bags, the incessant crinkling of which served as a major distraction.) I was far less enthralled by the extremely popular Disney Dreams show, walking out about halfway through. The final night brought us Remember the Magic, which was touching and well worth seeing. Two of the three comedians on board were highlighted in this show: Steve Morris (a corpulent guitar-playing goofball whose fart jokes made the crowd guffaw but made me gag) and Kevin Johnson, who is hands down the best ventriloquist I've ever seen, by a very wide margin. Alleged humorist Heath Hyche, from the same comedy neighborhood as Carrot Top, struck me as rather substandard, although he too proved to be a crowd pleaser, so again take my review with several grains of salt. I did not stay for the duration of his routine. They should have made Brent do double-duty as both cruise director and onboard comedian -- he was a hundred times funnier than Morris and Hyche, at one point earning roars of laughter from a routine about how some guests massacre the name of Lumiere's restaurant.

Even as a single guy traveling alone, it was very easy to make new friends among the many families aboard.

The other onboard highlights, for me, were as follows:

Dinner at Palo. Let me say that there is no adult more lowbrow than I am when it comes to cuisine, so I had absolutely zero interest in checking out this snobby eatery on Deck 10. Who wants to sit alone at a table in a fancy restaurant? But some new friends I'd made on board coerced me, basically against my will, to make a reservation. Man, was I glad they did! Even if the food was too posh for me, the beautiful and exquisite decor of Palo was worth the extra $15 it cost to eat there. The food, it turns out, was indeed a bit highbrow for me, but they made an absolutely FANTASTIC filet mignon with a scrumptious wine sauce, and the desserts were out of this world delicious -- I got to sample both the Italian gelato and the chocolate souffle, and both were outstanding. I ended up going to Palo twice this trip, and I can assure you I'll be going back.

Walking tour of the ship. Melita, a sprightly Aussie lass in pigtails, gave us a fascinating tour of the Magic, focusing on the thematic elements and styling on board. It was loaded with informational tidbits and my only complaint is that it didn't last twice as long as it did. I was completely mesmerized by all of the relevatory facts and trivia we learned, from the controversial yellow color of the lifeboats to the meaning behind the carpet designs and the coded flag symbols integrated in some of the signage.

Captain Q&A. Actually, there were three top-level crew members who participated on this final-sea-day event, including Brent (the cruise director), all taking questions from the passengers assembled in the Walt Disney Theater. I videotaped the entire session, which was full of intelligent questions and informative answers.

Outstanding service of the crew. I have never met more friendly and helpful people in my life. They REALLY take care of you on this ship. From the housekeepers on up to the captain, everybody is 100 percent professional. I told one of the professional portrait photographers on board, a cute Filipina named Ria, that she could guarantee a sale by posing with me for a photo. She called over another photographer and was happy to oblige. Now that's what I call dedication and commitment to the passenger!

The single unfortunate and soul-shattering occurrence on the Magic was having to say goodbye.

It was the "Chileno Bay Snorkeling Adventure." I recall there being several different snorkeling trips each day...if there was any tangible difference between them, I'm afraid I selected the most boring one.

Heh. Thanks very much. Um, other than bingo, I didn't hang around Rockin' Bar D very much. One night I ran over to sing my favorite song for Krazy Karaoke, but that's about all. The only other time I found myself there was to learn how to fold towels into the shape of a monkey. Several times I passed by on the way to or from Sessions, there was a prohibitively loud live band onstage performing what sounded like bluesy/country music not really to my taste.

I have written a thank-you letter to DCL and will probably post it in this thread...I'm not sure to whom it should be officially emailed, but I guess I'll figure it out.

Great question! Actually, there were two ship tours that I know of. The first was on the very first day (Sunday), and I was cursing myself -- under my breath, of course; this was a Disney ship -- for having missed it. So I was extremely happy when I found that there was to be another tour on the last sea day (Saturday). I can't say for sure if it was the same exact tour; the first was listed as "Walking Ship Tour" (1 hour, beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday) and the second was "Art of the Theme Ship Tour" (1 hour, beginning at 3 p.m. on Saturday). Ours was primarily focused on the "themes" that have been incorporated into the ship. But it was still incredible.

We were on this same cruise. We had two little ones with us and found that Cabo and Mazatlan was nothing to be desired. We went ashor for less than an hour and returned to a not so crowded ship. Which we absolutely adored. With 90 % of the people off the ship...means a lot of free time to spend at the not so crowded pools. We also were able to spend a lot of time talking with the Cast Members and learning a lot about their jobs and the Ship.

Puerta Vallarta was nice, but we ended up going to the Paradise Beach Adventure...very nice, we enjoyed this.

We went to Brunch and Dinner at PALO. Both were excellent, but I would have to rate Brunch as being the best. We are cruising again in January '09 and will reserve Palo for several visits. Cecelia is the best server in PALO, but she is on Holiday leave until August.

The entire trip as far as being on the ship was the greatest, we love Disney and they do a great job in making you feel very special. If you have never cruised with Disney before...get to know your dinner serving staff. This will make your trip all the more fun. The dinner cast members enjoy getting involved and talking with their guests...if you get a chance ask for Petr (from Czek Republic) he is great and interacts with the kids.

As far as adult entertainment, try to go to the activities organized with the Cruise entertainment staff (Trent, Oscer, Natalie, Luke, etc...), they are hysterical and enjoyable. Bingo is fun with Natalie. On the last night of the cruise go to Diversions to watch "Pub Night"...this is when the Cruise Staff puts on skits....SO FUNNY....you cry.

Also, make sure you go to the Pirates of the Caribbean Party on Deck 9 on Thursday Night....it is great....Fireworks and all.

Again to compare our Eastern Caribbean Disney Cruise to the Mexican Riviera Cruise....I think the Caribbean Cruises are a lot nicer ports of call. But regardless the Disney Ship is always the greatest.

Hey there! Sorry we didn't meet on the cruise. If you played bingo the day the same guy won two games in a row, that was me. B-11 dances from Natalie were hilarious, and I got to spend some quality time at a "Singles Mingle" chatting with Trent, who was extremely kind and informative. I regret not having seen Pub Night. Sounds hilarious! I will look for this when I cruise again in February 09.

I had no interest in Palo until my dinner companions started raving about it the first evening we were there; they'd eaten there many times before. Even then I had no interest, but I reluctantly said I would consider it. By the second night, I acquiesced after further raves, and called Guest Services, who managed to get me a table for the following (third) night. It was mostly to say I'd at least tried it. But it was fantastic, and I ended up calling Palo directly the next evening and booked something for the fifth night. There was no problem. But I was pushing my luck when I tried to get a table on the last evening...they were booked solid, although they took my room number in the event of a cancellation. Regrettably, there weren't any.

My advice would be to try to set something up as soon as you get on the ship. But as you can see, it's possible.

Like you, we have only been on one 3-day Bahama cruise and have never been to Palo, but will be trying brunch one day. We also wanted to spend more time on the ship, so have opted not to go ashore in Mazatlan. Your post sort of confirms our thinking.

I'm ashamed to say our 14 and 18 year olds will probably LOVE the bathroom humor from the comedian, and they may have gotten that from us.

Anyway, it was great to hear about your trip. It increases our own excitement, and we'll be sure to try some of the onboard things you suggest.

Thanks for the post! Although I came away from the first Disney cruise a raving fan, I was reluctant about it beforehand. I was accompanying a large group of people and I'd never taken a cruise before, so I didn't know what the whole thing was going to be like. I'm glad I took a chance.

I don't drink, so the appeal of Sessions for me was the entertainment. On all but one of the nights, jazz pianist Tim Moss entertained us with four different half-hour sets with breaks in between. I was there for almost all of them. He took requests and was extremely friendly and warm. Actually, watching him perform was the highlight of my cruise!

One night, Adam Stout took center stage at Sessions, and he was fantastic too!

Heh. It was only closed in between meals. Sorry to mislead you! I took that photo because my friend Jay and I have had a running joke about it for years; we started noticing that "closed for your future convenience" placard back in the 1970s at Disney World.

I wish I could give you photo pricing information, but I flunked calculus! Seriously, $20 for a single 8x10....The photo thing was really my only quibble with the cruise. I would estimate that they throw away 75 to 90 percent of the photos just because of the inflated prices. They should lower the prices of the pictures and send more people home with beautiful memories...I'm sure they would make the same amount of profit.

I never booked brunch at Palo's, but I was able to successfully book two dinners there during the cruise. (Well, two out of three. Not too bad. The only one they could not accommodate was the last night of the cruise.)

There were no stairs involved in the boarding process. They announced you as soon as you walked in.

Thanks! On our last cruise DH and I would always go to the Rockin' Bar D for the Adult show. Generally before the show the live band played. The band was HORID and loud which made us feel we were trapped in the Gong Show. I thnk we will try Sessions this time as well. :goodvibes

On the last night of the cruise, sitting in Sessions, sipping on a virgin pina colada (made by the beautiful Peruvian waitress Sara), I was actually getting a little misty-eyed thinking that I wouldn't be able to spend my evening at the nightclub anymore. I saw Tim perform four different half-hour sets every night of the cruise, and I wasn't even close to getting sick of it. Be sure to say hi to Sara and Damien for me.

Even so, it was still better than most hotel rooms I've stayed in, if a trifle smaller. I barely spent any time in there as it was!

Thanks..... I booked a Category 11 for my family which is an Inside Stateroom and the cheapest. I figured that we wouldn't spend much time in it so we'd save money going that route. Anyway, I thought your room looked impressive in the video which is why I asked.

When you see it in person, it's bound to seem on the "narrow" side...The couch evidently unfolds into a bed (I've never done it, but I've heard that it does). There's a curtain for privacy purposes (again, never done it), but I think it'd probably be OK for a small family, if a mite cozy.

Wow, I have absolutely no idea, sorry. All I know is, a tender took us off the ship and put us on dry land for about 5 minutes before another boat took us to the snorkeling site.
