4. When is the official SmallWorlds launch date?

At this stage we are planning to officially launch of SmallWorlds in June 2008.

I think that was an old doc you pulled that from, we were hearing August ever since we started

ETA: oh and I wrote it wasnt possible, let me change that to HIGHLY unlikely LOL

In the unlikely event Flickr.com had and was spreading a virus, it would infect millions in no time at all because of the populartity of the site. That would be on the news, so I say it didnt happen, but saying its not possible is a stretch :)

Interesting that the virus discussion is here. I recently had something happen to my machine that made everything lock. I restarted my machine and Windows could not load on start up. It happened while on SmallWords one day. (I also had other software running so cannot say for certain that SmallWorlds was the culprit.)

I ran every recovery process possible - no luck. In the end, I had to buy an external hard drive, back up my entire system, reformat my hard drive, reload (and find!) ALL my software and re-transfer all my files. Phew!

I have also increased my virus software. I have not been on SW's since my system is back up and running. (Not intentionally, just have not had time.) I do wonder if something from SW's was the cause, though.

u know its interesting that SW may be the cause of my virus too. Ever since i joined it i have this backround show up that says something like Warning spyware has been detected or something like that. I cant get it to go back to my normal backround so i have just left it. idk if its a virus but i am sorta convinced it is and that is COULD be SW...

me either, I have had no problems with any of that. Some of you seem to be playing other games also, which I also think is an unlikely cause, but wonder why that isn't something you would be worried about.

First update your antivirus software often, then you would get a pop up if it was happening, you shouldnt just get infected unless its a day 0 virus or your not protecting your computer adequately.

Why dont you write to smallworlds and provide the information to them. Let them check it out for you.

Would this by a Blue Background with "Warning" sign/box in the middle that is yellow and blue? If so....well, that's exactly what she said hers was!

I've suggested she let Smallworlds know, others that have had problem(s) might want to also (especially Gsterg, since it sounds like the same she had.)

Thanks everyone for the info, I am passing it on to my friend

I have been introducing sites that I frequent 1 by 1 since I re-built my system. So far, no troubles. Not a fool-proof method, but somewhat scientific in approach anyway.

As for anti-virus, thought we were protected, not sure what happened, and never did find a virus. However, every "fix" for a failed system did not work so most I have consulted with think I got hit by something. sigh Luckily, I don't seem to have lots anything except a lot of time and a few bucks on equipment needed to back up and re-install everything.

I just thought it was very interesting to read a similar issue since I know SW was one of the programs open when everything locked. Not saying it's the cause, just a common element.

As most of us know, there's not always a clear cut culprit when a system takes a nose-dive.

ETA:

That is not what I experienced. My entire system locked and upon restart, Windows would not start... ever.

the blue background box is a very popular malware thing. google this everyone there are fixes "blue background warning box"

you'll see many complaints and none of them were on smallworld at the time it happened.

Ever since i joined it i have this background show up that says something like Warning spy-ware has been detected or something like that. I cant get it to go back to my normal background so i have just left it. idk if its a virus but i am sorta convinced it is and that is COULD be SW...

Hi, If its a blue background and when you go into Display the tabs for Screen Saver and Desktop are gone, it's the virus called Joke-Bluescreen.c It puts three different files on your computer, .exe .scr and .jpg or something like jpg.

To remove it:
if possible, write down what your virus checker is saying
its name/location is. Example; I have McAfee and the window popped-up saying something like Virus Detected "Name: Joke-Bluescreen.c , Location: C:\WINDOWS\System32\blphc5hpj0e39n.scr " the underlined part is the virus, the name tends to vary between infected computers, but it usually looks something like that. Give or take the numbers.

Now if you don't have a virus checker ( I recommend getting one now!) or your virus checker isn't popping up you can try to restart your computer to get it to pop up, or just follow my instructions deleting anything that looks similar to the virus name I put down (the virus name is usually all letters with one or two numbers, and ends in .exe .scr and .jpg or something like it)

Okay, well if your virus checker popped up the name/location great! Write it down, and if it didnt go on guessing from here on out and doing what I say.

1. Open Task Manager and go to the Processes tab scroll through the names and look for one that is a long line of jumbled number, letters, letters/numbers, or anything that resembles the name Joke-Bluescreen.c (And if your not sure if what you're deleting is a program, go to yahoo.com and search 'what is' then the name of the program).

2. go here (http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/38/1/Restore-missing-tabs-to-the-Display-properties-dialog.html) and download the script showalldisplaytabs-xp.vbs
to get your Display tabs back. The download sould be right under the word Attachments. It's safe, no virus.

3. Now go into the recently restored Desktop tab, and again look through the names for one thats all numbers, letters, letters/numbers, that says joke-bluescreen or something like it, Or the image previews for the blue screen image.

4. Now once you've found it write it down and go to Start, Search , All Files and Folders, type in the name you got from Display in "All Or Part Of The File Name" then search it, once it finds it hit delete.

5. If the virus checker gave you the name of the virus search that out too, deleting anything it brings up with that name. Do four searches with the virus name ending in exe, jpeg or jpg, and scr If it finds anything with the name, delete it.

Now go back into Display, and Desktop tab and check to see if the virus image/name is gone, if its not or only the image in the middle of the blue screen is gone, change your background to something else, save, exit display, wait 2 minutes and go back in. It sould be gone! hope that works any questions messege me angelx689@yahoo.com.

Also delete antivirus 2008 if you see it, it is also installed with Joke-Bluescreen.c sometimes.

If anyone does need more assistance they can ask for help in the gaming CB, this really is not a smallworld problem. Misparkle has some good information there, but if you have questions or whatever lets move it to its own subject.

I did a search this morning on SW because I need to speak to staff. Did anyone notice most have not been on in over 3 weeks or a month? I need to bring something to their attention on the SW forum. You cant report a thread there, unreal.

Check out a suggestion on the last page under feature suggestions: New clothing suggestions. Ppl are pushing it on there.

I don't play much either, but I will say it wouldnt take much to get me back in there. They really just need an earning credit method and maybe different items for sale at different times or something.

Of course they would have to keep the quests moving as well.

I think they have an incredible idea and implementation happening, they just need to polish it up a bit now :)

I finished my last missions (the dance party and the one after it) last weekend, and now there's really nothing to do anymore. I like the arcade games, but not enough to play them without getting some kind of reward, and there are no missions left to do. My brother and I put our rooms together and we already have all the furniture we want.

I like the game and I'm looking forward to when they add new stuff and officially release it. But until then, I probably won't play much because there's not enough to do.

By the way, I was amazed at how quickly I got the dance party mission done. I just went to another mission room, asked for help, opened my room, and I was done in just a few minutes. Then I helped other people do theirs. It was really fun.

yes at first the dance mission seemed like it would be a nightmare, but when you can find a group thats willing to help, it can be quite fun going room to room helping people out and getting some help in return :)

Mitch posted an update:

Hey folks. Man have we been slack about keeping you guys posted with whats coming up. Its been on my to-do list for a while now but always keeps getting bumped by what seems like more important stuff at the time. My apologies.

Anyway - I am going to post a preview on our blog next week on our upcoming release due late August. We were originally planning to have a release due out this month but we decided for a number of reasons to add more content into the next release, and delay it a few weeks.

One of the biggest features in the next release is 3-fold enhancements to the mission system - that is (i) enhancements to the basic mission system, so that for instance puzzles and quizzes can be incorporated into them; (ii) more mission content, including repeatable missions, & (iii) user-creatable missions! Thats right - you will be able to create your own missions and share them with your friends and other users.

Some of the other new features coming up include;

* a new set of game arcade machines and heaps more casual games
* spells & potions (this is very cool - I'll pop a video up previewing this next week too)
* food & drink
* more items of clothing
* web page embeddability - ability to embed a simple Room-based IM Chat or the whole "player" in any web page

Beyond the August release, we are planning on our release after that being in late October at which point we will be exiting beta. Between August and October you'll also see a few more bits and pieces too including some Facebook applications.

Again I thank you for your patience, and we promise to be in better communication with you all in the future.

Warm regards

I wish they'd make our heads smaller in relation to our bodies... and then give us the reverse of that magic - oversized heads.

Update regarding "Beta reset" for launch in October.

http://forum.smallworlds.com/showthread.php?p=5727

Hi Everyone

I know there are a lot of you concerned about the fact that we will be resetting SmallWorlds before we launch in October. I know that this sounds unfair, and possibly unnecessary to some of you, so I wanted to explain why we have to do this. I also wanted to let you know how we will try and make it up to you all.

As you know, SmallWorlds is currently in beta. The beta gives us the opportunity to test out all the various features of SmallWorlds, and to add new ones based on feedback from the community. During the beta we have to compress the time it takes to achieve things in the world, including buying items and levelling up. To achieve this we have made items cheaper than they would normally be, and made missions and other activities give out more XP than they would normally. Within weeks, many people have spaces packed with items, and have hit the top levels in all the XP paths. Normally this would take several months to achieve.

In the next release, we are introducing wearable and consumable items, and the ability to purchase new spaces (including outdoor zones, islands etc). Many of these items would normally be quite expensive, but we have made them cheaper in order to get more people testing them out during the next phase of the beta process.

If we didn’t reset, then most people in the beta would essentially be at the “end game”, while anyone new coming into the would take months to get to the same level. This would create a huge imbalance in the world’s economy, demoralizing anyone new coming into the world, as everyone will have cool stuff except them.

So, unfortunately, a reset is inevitable. To make it up to you all, in recognition of the time and effort you have put into SmallWorlds already, we will be doing the following for beta users when we reset:

All qualifying beta accounts will:

* Receive 2000 tokens to help them set up their spaces.
* Start at level 20 for all XP paths (Social, Gamer, Artist and Explorer).
* Receive a one-time-only wearable beta item. This item will NEVER be available in the world, and so will become increasingly valuable over time (if you ever choose to sell it).
* Get a special “Founding Citizen” title (visible when people click on you).
* Receive a 50% discount on premium account fees for 6 months.
* Receive a 50% discount on gold purchases up to 20,000.

We will also be allowing the owners of the top 100 spaces to keep their inventory and their spaces. The selection of the top 100 spaces will be based on ratings and popularity over the period leading up to our launch.

Some additional notes:

* To qualify for the beta bonuses you must be at least level 40 in at least one of the XP Paths (Social, Gamer, Artist or Explorer). With the new user created missions, there will be plenty of ways to get XP up for all of the Paths.
* The top 100 space owners will also qualify for the other beta tester bonuses.
* All beta accounts will be able to repeat the original missions.

I hope this helps explains things more clearly. Please feel free to post questions related to the reset below.

Cheers

The only mission I have is the Swarm one which I have not been able to complete and this is part of the reason I stopped playing SW, that and Wizard 101. I will not be a "qualifying" beta member because I can't get to 40 XP and I won't be able to receive the beta bonuses. If I can't get my one-time only wearable item and my Founding Citizen title, then I don't want to play. -stomps away to go pout in corner-

I don't know; it doesn't sound like they're planning to increase the number of missions, and even if they did, it might not have the effect we were expecting.

you only have to be higher than 40 in one of the paths, you dont have to be level 40 gamer, it can be any one of them, so you should be all set :thumbsup2

And to think we were complaining that everything was too expensive and it it took forever to properly furnish a space!

I don't know; it doesn't sound like they're planning to increase the number of missions, and even if they did, it might not have the effect we were expecting.

I've completed all the missions and I'm currently at:

Social: 22
Artist: 20
Explorer: 20
Gamer: 23

So I have no more missions and I'm not even close to L40 in any area. Are the user created missions available? I'm not seeing where to find them or how to create them. Any advice on leveling would be appreciated.

It sounds as tho there are more missions in store for us that will
A) test some new features
B) give us the chance to get to level 40
C) get us all back into the smallworlds grove...

It does stink about the reset, but I'm cool with it. Wouldn't it be great if most of the top 100 rooms are Dis'er owned??

Hopefully soon!

We will also be allowing the owners of the top 100 spaces to keep their inventory and their spaces. The selection of the top 100 spaces will be based on ratings and popularity over the period leading up to our launch. Here comes the popularity thing again; one thing I don't enjoy about SmallWorlds. Guess it goes with the territory for a social game, though.

Your right, but the furniture in those rooms probably is going to be buyable, at least there is no reason to believe it will not be. So odds are yes they will have an "economic" jump on those of us that don't make the cut, but I won't dwell on that.

I want to see the user created missions, and earning capabilities, at least thats what I am interested in.

Another update on the World Reset - to clarify a few items.

Glad they did this, makes more sense now. :)

Well it's good to see everyone posting with such... passion!

I will try to explain things a little more clearly:

Level 40 XP Requirement:

In the release due out this week, players will be able to create missions for each other. These missions will pay out both XP and tokens, and can be set up to give XP for any one of the XP Paths (Social, Gamer, Artist, Explorer). The tokens do not come out of the player's pocket (who set the mission up), it is paid out by the system. You should be able to get one of the XP Paths up to 40 fairly quickly (and have fun doing it), especially if you already have some around lvl 20.

The reason why we created this restriction is that it would be very easy for a person to create several beta accounts, and get the 2000 tokens from each account, and gift them to their main avatar. Rest assured that we will monitor the progress of players over the coming months, and adjust the yardstick if it is too high. We just want to ensure people aren't able to "game" the beta bonuses (and to get everyone to help us test the new mission system).

Don't worry, no matter what we will ensure that all of you who have been active in SmallWorlds over the past 2-3 months will qualify.

2000 Token Reward:

This value was based on what people would have earned by completing the missions. We may revise it upwards to match any price rebalancing we may do when we launch. We are trying to compensate you back to a level that you would have been at if you were playing the post-beta version (and a little bit more).

Top 100 Spaces:

This will be mainly based on popularity - the number of people visiting your room. The rating itself is not so important, only that people tend to rate it favourably (i.e. you don't trick lots of people to visit your space by misrepresentation).

We are trying to stoke up a bit of competition, encouraging you to come up with ways to get people to come to your space often (hint: having an interesting and popular mission will do this as people will be wanting to earn XP and/or tokens to get their space set up and into the popularity list).

These are the final 4-6 weeks of testing, and we want to encourage as much activity as we can to make sure everything works, and get feedback so we can make final tweaks and improvements.

Yes! The one you have been waiting for is here.

Thank you for your patience.

Cool. Can't wait although I'm going to have to wait until saturday to check it out.

Heres a thought...why don't we start of list of Dis'er's with rooms that would like to "up their stats" to hopefully make it to the "Top 100". Everyone on the list would hopefully try their best to visit each other person on the list at least once each time they log on. The only rules could be 1) The room must be owned by a disboard member and 2) Only 1 room per member.
Thoughts? In any event, it could give us something to do once we burn through the latest missions!

Ned, it is a nice thought but I would wait to see what Smallworlds feels on the comments presented about the "Top 100". Seems to be a great debate going on over there. If you have not been over there, here is the thread - http://forum.smallworlds.com/showthread.php?t=918

I know for me, I would prefer a total reset just to make the game even level for everyone. No matter how they choose the Top 100, people will be bitter and angry to some degree.

But back to the release, I cannot wait to create missions and to see all my old friends who hopefully will return to Smallworlds. Sounds like we will need to create some mission help threads this weekend. :)

The new build just doesn't do anything for me. I never was into quests on VMK, I did them because I had to, never enjoyed them. I'm finding it the same way with these missions. I'm just not enjoying them, especially ones those arcade games that I cannot play. So ditto, on that big arcade center. Not my kind of thing.

What I want is to shop, and I want new clothes. As far as I can tell, we got a new bubble/puffy type jacket. Uh no....

So, I will wait until October and see what that brings to the game. Otherwise, I'm done. I'll probably work on one of my xp's to bring it up to 40, but that will be the last time I log in until October, unless new clothes make an appearance and another way to earn tokens....

I think this game is going to appeal more to the vmkers who were gamers and the real techie geeks. I can see myself playing here now long term.

I played a pretty complicated user created quest yesterday. There are many things you can do with the engine. It was impressive.

The only complaint I really have is they gave us such minimal earning capabilities. I am glad they are paying attention to us but I think they still don't understand we need to buy many of EVERYTHING @_@ haha.

Overall I love the new additions, and now need to work my way up to some big XP and the high priced inventory options :)

I played a pretty complicated user created quest yesterday. There are many things you can do with the engine. It was impressive. There seems to be a lot of potential for creativity. Between puttering around in our rooms, playing with widgets, and now the ability to create quests, there's a lot to do, even for those of us who don't play the arcade games. What I want is to shop, and I want new clothes. As far as I can tell, we got a new bubble/puffy type jacket. Uh no....I find it ironic that clothing choices are so scarce on SmallWorlds, while my backpack is overflowing with outfits on Wizard 101, which I don't really consider to be a social game. The only complaint I really have is they gave us such minimal earning capabilities. I am glad they are paying attention to us but I think they still don't understand we need to buy many of EVERYTHING @_@ haha. You're right; I don't think they've ever gotten that. And unbelievably, it's going to be harder than ever to decorate a room after the launch, because prices will be higher and it will take longer to earn tokens. :confused3

This quote is from their update a week ago:During the beta we have to compress the time it takes to achieve things in the world, including buying items and levelling up. To achieve this we have made items cheaper than they would normally be, and made missions and other activities give out more XP than they would normally. Within weeks, many people have spaces packed with items, and have hit the top levels in all the XP paths. Normally this would take several months to achieve.Being able to customize your personal space is the major draw of SmallWorlds. They may have miscalculated how long players are willing to wait to get the items they want for their room.

NedsTJ
09-14-2008, 12:07 PM
I don't think they miscalculated...I think that's what they're counting on. they'll be able to "sell" subscriptions so players get tokens to decorate their rooms. Depending on the price/month, I'd be willing to pay. I really like what I've seen so far, although I've only had an hour or so to really play this weekend, LOL.

Also, I posted this under the Custom Missions thread, but a very simple way of earning tokens and xp points is to play with stereos, watch videos, and draw on your canvas.

What I've been doing today is leaving Pink afk while watching videos, every now and then when I walk through my kitchen, I'll exit the video, collect my tokens/xp, and then go back to watching again while I get some things done.

Just a word of warning: When an item at Mysterio's shop is described as being usable by "level 40 status only", it does not mean that level 40 in one area will suffice. Apparently you have to be level 40 in all areas.

Poor Player Behavior

(Aengus or Dis please move this if needed.)

Hi!
I just had a very nice chat in the Thermae Spa with a SmallWorlds Moderator. I explained how I noticed the sharp increase in poor player behavior. (He knew all about it! ;) )

I told him I understood the game was open chat, but had noticed a report button by the camera icon. In order to not abuse it, I asked him to give me an idea of what should and should not be reported. (He nearly fell to the ground that someone would not want to abuse the report button. I can only imagine the reports they have been getting!)

Although reporting is a gray area he said think PG-13. They allow some bad words, others are not allowed. He did not specify exactly what was permitted. I'm sure the context in which a word is used has a lot to do with it. He was very speciifc in saying bullying is not allowed. They are working on getting together some more specific guidelines.

So, hope this info helps. I did get the impression that they really are trying to work on the situation. Now that we have some report guidelines, maybe we can help them, help us.

Happy

PS Cruise, I mentioned about your guestbook situation. He said the feature to delete individual entries is now working. I also mentioned about a player writing a curse word on my graffiti board while I was there and then said...guess I should have used that report button.
