After you click on the person and click the challenge button, a box pops up where you can click up and down arrows to increase or decrease the amount of tokens you want to wager. Once you do that, you hit the "send challenge" button (or whatever it says) and wait for the person to accept. I won 5 tokens that way today :)

That is very true, but it would have been nice for everyone to play. I was thinking maybe they could convert it make it suitable for playing for kids, like parental control for example, just thinking out of the box here lol

I'm just going to jump on the bandwagon here. I actually suggested this to them. A way for me to allow the kids to play only seeing selected friends chat (like mine, King's and a few trusted Dis folks my kids knew from VMK) and not allowing them to view any videos/hear any music except their own. This apparently will not be happening as the kids version will not be linked with the adult game at all. Sad for us as we are looking for a game the family can play together.

This game is very creative and incorporates lots of neat stuff, but please parents try this out yourself first. I was in a room with some other VMK moms when the song being played was dropping f bombs like crazy. Even just trying to shop, I have had some very lude remarks. So be careful.

If you are a parent and you are having your child play this game, I would also like to point out that not every youtube video is rated G, so I would either say no to youtube videos on this game or watch them VERY closely, or you can also contact Smallworlds staff and see what they can do about it. It is the same way with music, some songs are not always family friendly, I suggest that someone could suggest to have it set to where only some features work with the accounts to the parent's choices.

Hi,

Something ink was told when talking to staff about the raidos in public spaces. The staff person told him to click on the radio and slide the volume slider all the way to the left. This will mute the radio but not the other sounds in the room. We tried it and it works great. So no first thing i do when I enter a public room is mute the radio!

We also had a chat last night from a staff member. He stayed quite a while and they definitely do appreciate the input from us. I won't say his title because it was a play title and even tho he let us know he was a staff member not sure he wants it blasted all over the internet ROFL

Anyways he was answering questions and then he said he was a small word staff member. So I did what any good VMKer would do. I reported him ROFL :rotfl:

He asked why I reported him, and I said I don't believe staff impersonation would be tolerated. At that point he started using an aura to let us know he really was a staff member ROFL.

He told us they are reading the DISboards threads here so they are appreciative of us beating up their beta getting it ready for them. Remember to not only share your experiences here with us, but be sure to report issues on their real forums as well. Thats where they notice the bugs and the features suggestions best.

They seem incredibly nice and I guess its pretty cool to see we are appreciated also.

So yes you can report a staff member in SmallWorlds if anyone was wondering :rotfl:

Is anyone else locked out of their accounts? I havent been able to load my account for 2 days or use my stereo. Im gettin a little arggggggg. I can go on my other account but not the one I use all the time.

Sweet cant even load my room, so its that room for some reason and unfortunately when you sign on it drops you in there.

the first time i went to the pool hall (I forget the name), as soon as i walked in the door i started hearing the f-word. it was something by snoop dogg on the radio and the f-word was used repeatedly. i muted it like bug said and told my son to do that as well. but sometimes you arent quick enough...so he has been playing with the sound on the computer itself turned off.

if they create a g-rated version that doesnt interact with the regular version, i guess i will be a member of the g-rated version so i can interact with my kids.

I was in that room with you, and that is the exact reason my daughter wont be in any public rooms, and my sound will be turned down when she is around.

Bottom line this is not a game for kids. It was never designed for kids, and while we are looking for games for the whole family we can't expect the owners of this game to change it for us. If they did it would be great, but I don't see that happening.

Well said, lindseysmomma! This cannot be repeated enough.

For months, the developers of SW have been putting together an awesome virtual world, with a specific audience in mind. Suddenly, an influx of refugees from VMK descend upon them, looking for a new "home". So far, they have been very welcoming and appreciative of our feedback. BUT I think we need to be careful. They will soon get tired of hearing comments and complaints about the language/music/un-Kid-friendly nature of their world. And I'm sure it would not be a simple matter for them to build in the multitude of filters, etc., necessary to make their world acceptable for a younger audience.

I understand that parents might want to share a game world with their kids. VMK was extraordinarily special in that regards (which is something that the suits at Disney didn't seem to comprehend.) But SmallWorlds just might not be the place you are looking for.

Personally, I love the game as it is. I love being able to talk to my friends in a normal fashion without dictionary dancing. And, honestly, I love it that one of the songs on my Seeqpod features a couple uses of an R-rated adjective. :rolleyes1

Aengus, I have noticed a few vmk players on there that don't seem old enough to be there, and my younger kids won't be playing there, but I think discussion on this board is ok as long as it's clear that this game isn't filtered for kids.

I've had issues with items disappearing, have you guys? I set down several new things, change the walls/floors, leave the room and come back to find the items gone and the settings back to what they were before. It's happened to me twice now.

Well, I definitly won't let my 13 yr. old daughter play, but then there are a lot of pg-13 movies we won't let her see, either. I don't think I would let my daughter play even if she was a few years older, simply because the whisper feature allows anyone to say anything, and some people take advantage of the anonymity of them to make very inappropriate comments to females. My 16 yr old son, I might let play, but would talk to him about some of the things he might (probably would) hear, and let him know that if these things started appearing in his vocabulary that he wouldn't be playing anymore. My 18 yr old son is free to play what he wants, but knows the types of language that are unacceptable to us.

I think the discussion is fine for the boards here, but do realize that even though SW is stated to be geared toward ages 13 and up, when the staff says they plan to make another version for 'kids' that it's the young teenagers they are thinking about, not younger kids.

My daughter is almost 6, if she was in her teens I would probably let her play this site by herself.

You also have to think how many kids under 13 even find this site interesting. Yeah my daughter likes to move my avatar around but actually playing no. She would rather be on a site where there are things she can do.

Also how many kids are on this forum? It sounds like a lot of adults and teenagers to me post here but I could be completely wrong.

As for the 13+ issue, I think it depends on the maturity level of the person. I've known some 13 yo who were very immature for their age and those I would not allow on this game. Others I have known are more mature and I would let them play.

That being said, I haven't even mentioned this game to my Godchildren. I wouldn't want them playing this for a while yet. They're 11 and 8.

From purely a safety standpoint, SmallWorlds (as well as others like Gaia and SocioTown) has nothing even close to the features that a game designed for kids should have. But then very few do. (If you change the word "kids" to "minors" I think it puts this in a little different light.)

Since the content depends on who you run across in the game, comfort with that is also going to vary. My kids are lucky they grew up when the internet was new, because even if they were 13, I would not be happy with them playing this, but that's just me.

I heard someone say that a "kids" version of SmallWorlds is planned down the line, with that meaning age 13+. I am curious to hear what the developers would consider to be the distinguishing factors between the two games. If they don't consider the present version to be aimed at that age group, it tells us at least how they are categorizing it.

Anyway, as far as offensive content, I think the total impact on players could be greater than similar games, since there are videos and music as well as free chat. Parents should certainly be advised about this, but again, I know some consider that to be ok for 13-year-olds.

I have mixed emotions about SmallWorlds being discussed here. It's only natural for younger Dis members to read the enthusiastic reviews by adults and want to try it out for themselves. Of course we have no way of knowing who is going in with parental approval/supervision, and that bothers me. (I have already grilled two young players about that in the game.) But if SmallWorlds was excluded from allowed topics, in all fairness the other "teen" games should be as well.

A separate game forum for the adults would be a good solution in my opinion, but I don't know if that's even possible on Dis.

So far, I haven't seen anything inappropriate on SW. Some one actually tried to say a curse word and it got the old asterisk effect. Also, I saw somewhere that a host said they were having trouble with people putting "bad" songs on their radios, so it is a concern on their end.

But, not only is the music and videos suspect, but so are the artboards and pictures. I haven't seen any bad photos yet. But yesterday, I went into a room entitled VMK Reunion (or something like that). There was one of the drawing boards that was blank with the f word written on it. So we can pretty much write on those whatever we want. It was set to allow anyone to change it.
I didn't see anyone that I really knew in there, but I just had to get out. I was thinking how that was great way to give VMKers a bad name. :headache:

I think I'm going to make the suggestion (or someone else here can do it) to make everything automatically set to only owner changing things. Then they can give us the option to allow others to change whatever we want. Right now I've noticed that the dafault is set to allow all to change things.

We had a nice visit with Angela yesterday as well. She was very sweet and enjoyed hearing what suggestions or comments we had. She asked us when VMK closed. She never had the chance to play VMK, but was interested in our suggestions.

We advised her about the dictionary that VMK used that restricted words. She advised us that anything offensive in a public area should be blocked. Private area's are not filtered. In regards to the radio's playing bad lyrics in public rooms, she stated that she would take it back to her management to see what they can do. She said possibly they could configure a "safe" playlist on radios in public rooms.

I almost never can. My computer hates that room. Some rooms take longer than others for my computer to load, but that one in particular is a killer. A couple times, it took so long for the room to load that I was booted for inactivity before I even got into the room.

So far, in the times I've been in game, I have not run across ANY bad language or inappropriate words/sexual content in any of the public rooms that I've visited. Most of the people I've encountered speak Portuguese, so if they're talking inappropriately, it's going right over my head and my boys' heads too. :)

My sound on my laptop is ALWAYS turned off, so I have not heard any of the music in the game, and I prefer it that way. I'm very conservative when it comes to music. I will make sure my boys play with their sound off too.

Within 5 minutes of being on Haboo Hotel and Gaia, I witnessed some horribly obscene things that I would never want to repeat or hear again for that matter. Nothing of the sort on SmallWorlds (so far...).

To be honest, I've encountered inappropriate actions/words and rudeness in VMK almost on a daily basis. Not sure where you all were that you somehow missed it.... even with the limited VMK dictionary, kids sure found a way to get around it.

The settings can be customized to allow only those we have made "members" of our room to use things, but I wish it was safe to leave the settings to "everyone", because if someone is not on your member list, they can't even listen to your music, watch your videos, or view your pictures. There needs to be a distinction between "using" an item and "changing" an item.

My daughter, age 12, started playing SW the first few days but seems to have lost interest a bit. I liked it when she was playing because she was figuring out all the technical aspects for me. :rolleyes1

She still remembers early in VMK when a girl asked a boy if he wanted her to take off her shirt.

I think it would be great if they came out with a tween version. It seems like all the games we have looked at are too babyish for her or too old for her.

I have to agree. There have been maybe one or two instances where I felt someone was trying to hard to gain my attention, but leaving the room solved that issue. It wasn't inappropriate, however, just annoying. The only thing I found to be offensive was the music. Now that I know I can control the volume...hehe, problem solved.
Is this game appropriate for teens? I believe so.
Is it safe for younger kids? I don't think younger kids would be very interested, to be honest. I don't think the games will hold their interest for long.
I refuse to play Habbo or Gaia, and it only took me five minutes on each game to conclude it's scary in there! I haven't seen those issues on SW, yet.

its cute, the minigames are all done well I think, and the ability to continue chatting with the room while you play is just another of those touches that to me is really amazing.

I do hope they eventually tie some sort of currency to the games however, we need to buys stuffz so we need an incentive to keep using those things they are giving us.

The picture frames in the game allow you to put your own pictures in there (you host them on flickr) so many of us have put Disney or VMK shots. If I see you online I'll be glad to come help, but a quicker way is to look in places for a room that has VMK in the title or description. You can almost always find someone willing to help there.

The way I beat this was to only stay along the outside of the 4 walls. Stay away from the swarm -- go in the opposite direction and keep shooting all the time, all while staying along the outer walls. When you've finally killed all the insects, shoot all the hive blocks (if I'm remembering this correctly).

yes you can gift items for the missions, I also gifted my pool table so a friend could pass without buying it. I believe it has been done for even the oak chair, so you could save yourselves a few credits that way

Okay, I am absolutely addicted to that Seeqpod stereo. I spent about an hour and a half yesterday putting together a playlist and about another hour and a half today adding to that playlist. Not to mention all the time I've spent in my room doing nothing but listening to it. I've put together (I think) a good mix of modern rock and classic rock.

(And I had my guests in mind when I picked the songs, if anyone ever decides to visit. All the lyrics are clean and for the most part, I picked slower songs for the people who find heavier songs obnoxious ;))

One of the staff came in and DIDNT DO ANYTHING! He just stayed there telling everyone to calm down! that made me So mad! Wow what a great change from VMK to This game.

They have been having some room load issues, I would say try it again today, if not they have an update taking place tomorrow which will hopefully address this problem that has been floating room to room.

Do you have the chat filter turned on? before you click "enter the world" off to the left side is "account settings" . Go in there and turn the filter on, this will prevent cuss words from being displayed.

The in game staff members right now I believe are all programmers, no moderators as of yet. Not sure but they may not have planned on having them in game until it launches, but hopefully the will realize they needs some pro's in there. I know 2 in particular I would love to see working there :rotfl: They would whip everyone into shape!

Yes - don't delete the "clone" when this happens. Just go in and delete the pets with each "clone". As you delete the pets, the clones will disappear. You will then have to create a new pet. This seems to happen when you create a pet and the server has a hiccup at the point you name/save your pet. Your pet then turns blue and you have a clone!

I have a last.fm stereo in my room and love it. :lovestruc I have it set up to play lots of Disney and Springsteen music. :goodvibes It was pretty simple to set up once I joined last.fm. But, the staff at Smallworlds was really helpful when it came to setting up my playlist in my room.

Well, jusT think. It might have been something a lot worse!

The DJ Stand uses Last.fm playlists to stream from. I haven't been able to figure out how to get it to automatically play when entering the room. But then, it's a DJ stand. A DJ has to work the tables! :)

I have the boombox. It plays songs from Last.fm. I havent played with it a lot, but my daughter was on the other computer on my other account helping out with the pool mission, and she had the boombox playing something different that what was playing on the same boombox on my computer.

- Boombox - can take your music with you
- DJ Stand - didn't get to ask much about it, but i think it's very similar to the stereo
- Last.fm stereo - does not play a specific play list, music heard on each person's machine can vary due to browser
- Seeqpod stereo - load your own playlist and let it rock

Interesting about the room issue. Was it a secondary avi from your main account? Post that on their forums to let them know. They are very quick in correcting issues.

Sent you a PM, but as for finding people, it's very easy. Maybe too easy.

Go to the "People" icon on the bottom of your window. On the top right, you will see "Search." Type in the title of anyone. Once it finds them you can do a few things:
- Add them as your friend
- Go to their Home Space
- Block them
- Add them as a member
- See if they are on or offline.

Note about friends: Just because you add someone as a friend, does not mean they are your friend. It is NOT a reciprocal relationship like in VMK. This means that anyone could have you on their friends list and you will never know it.

Under edit membership you can make someone a "member" (which is sort of more like what we are used to with "friends"). If you set your space to members only, those are the only people that can get in your home space.

Hope this helps. Trying not to go into TOO much overwhelming detail. Ask away if you have more questions on this or anything else.

Ok, I don't know about the rest of you but that mini-golf game is driving me up the wall. I have yet to complete a 4-player game because it either freezes or somebody disconnects/leaves. At the rate the games have been going, it looks like it would take at least an hour to complete the round needed for the mission.

If I try to do this when there's less lag, there's also less players around to join. :sad2:

In fact some seem to be really nice...lots of furniture, pictures, etc. How are people getting enough tokens to do this? I think that I've got my place fairly modest, yet only have about 150 tokens remaining...How is everyone else here fairing with the credits? Do I really need to start playing in tournments or Challenging ppl to samari duels?

the current game will never have a dictionary, I was told they plan on making another version of the game for children, didnt say when, but I imagine thats not until this game is up and running the way they want it, which I would expect a long time coming.

The game is having major difficulty with rooms today, its not you. I couldnt get into any of the shops and I typically have had good luck with getting around when others were having problems.

It seems to be that you don't actually get tokens for people joining, but it does increase your social status, which will eventually lead to more tokens (you get tokens every ten status levels), and supposedly eventually more benefits.
Like you, I'm thinking that our invites might need to wait until after beta, so we can keep anything gained as a result.

edit: The three of us played, and made it halfway through hole eight before it froze, so it is better, but it's not there yet.

Bee, I know things can change at any moment, but last I heard they would be removing the task as a mini game of golf, so if that stays true, you will know when its fixed because your mission will have changed. hahahaha or it wont? gosh this is so confusing :rotfl:

Just talked to Tony Fendall, who is SW staff. He says the golf fix isn't tested yet (it's on a testing server), but it should be loaded up by "this afternoon" whenever that is.

edit: Ok, 6 pm central time is 11 am their time, so maybe in five or six hours.

just thought I would pass on, while helping dancing missions with tony he let us know that the new patch was scheduled for 6 hours later that would fix the mini golf mission bug... That was around 8:30est or so.

He said testing was not going as expected. He thinks it may be delayed, so I guess we are all stay tuned.

In order for your mules to get tokens, you have to sign them up using different email accounts. All alternate characters on the same email account do not get tokens.

Juliana Smallworlds said earlier tonight that they are hoping to get one update a month until they reach version 1.0. I think Juliana said they are currently at version .5.

She also said that they will be adding food, and spell pins! Woot!

Also, I just have to say that all the pets in SW are so cuuuute! But really, it's all about the cookies...

I very rarely posted high scores of my own, as they aren't something I really focus on. Game playing is about having fun to me, not really about scores. I discovered an arcade game in SW a few days ago that I enjoy. After playing for a while, I was so very proud to land the high score on the machine. I went to bed, not even thinking about posting about it, it was no big deal.

In the morning, my score had not only been beaten, but completely demolished. I did not even know such a score that this person acheived was possible. Clearly this person understood something about the game that I did not. That fired me up to try to beat that score. I even kept my eyes open for this person's name in SW, hoping to ask for some game tips. After a few days of trying to even come close to this score, it became clear that it was not happening. It was just untouchable.

Then, last night, Miss MonkeyRulz played this same game and was simply amazing. Not only did she bump me down to 3rd place on the high score list, but came oh so close to beating the high score. (Nice work!) That made 2 people with a score more than double mine, proving it was not just a fluke. And I could not figure out HOW such a score was possible, much less do it myself.

For one of the very few times ever, I become narrowly focused on my score, and not the playing experience. To say that over the last 2 days I have become obsessed with this mini-game is an understatement. With 2 days off from work, I have played and played (and played) in an effort to SOMEHOW figure out how such a score was doable. The lack of explanation of the scoring, made this not only an issue of "Could I do it?", but also just figuring out, "How is it done?"

As many of you know, we get no credits for arcade games atm in SW, this was merely about my own personal pursuit. This was me against the game.

It is with incredible happiness and amazing self-satisfaction that I share this with all of you:

I am in a bit of disbelief, my fingers literally hurt, and not a night too soon as I return to work tomorrow. No one I know is online at the moment (yeah ok, it's 2:55am) and I truly don't think that my sleeping husband or a sleeping hdmonkeybug or AshJoe would share my excitement were I to wake any of them up to share my elation at this hour.

So for the moment....

you cant be serious? This game is beta, it has many problems BUT it is a game and it was not made to be like another game.

If you would like to compare what works and what doesnt between the two we can but VFK is only permitted one thread on the boards, so bring this debate over there if you wish ;)

Click the little My Profile Passport in your toolbar - then in the upper right hand corner you will see a missions tab - click that and it will bring up all Missions - from there click on the Mission you wish to read about and it will open it up.

Go to your room and open the options (wrench) menu
Go to Decor
Change the floors and walls to grass and whatever wall you want. You will have to play around to get the grass in the right place.

hehe, her score is great! She showed me that the high score was not a fluke, but truly do-able. From there, it was tunnel-vision on a mission.

So was there an actual trick that you were missing or was it just persistance? If there was a trick, you don't have to share it if you want to keep this skill all to yourself (I can completely understand that). I'm just curious if a trick exists?

Don't worry about it. Thanks for trying, though. I'm sorry to wasted so much time just trying to help me :(

I did notice a trick to get into the Thermae Spa, though. It's time consuming, but it worked both of the last two times I actually made it in there, so I know it's not a fluke. When you try to go into the room, look at how many people are in each instance (though I'm not sure how the people who are already in there actually got in there). Try to go into one of the instances if you wish, but you probably won't make it. Refresh periodically (or go elsewhere and try the Thermae Spa later) and if you notice the number of people in one of the instances has gone down by one from what it was when you previously checked, THEN enter that particular instance. It should let you in.

Really? I get locked out of public spaces every few minutes in VFK, because someone is blocking the door and won't move, so I end up having to return to my room.

i dont know which is which, but the major differences between types are some are seeqpod (searchable songs you can add to a play list) and last.fm which are more like you pick the style and its a radio station and it just does its thing
