I think we have 2 useless chit chat threads now. I think I should put this in this one.....:confused3

I have a parenting question.

Do I coddle my children too much??????? Actually, that's not a real question, I already know the answer. Anyway...

My oldest DD is on a mission trip. She really doesn't like being away from home and only has a few friends that she will actually sleep over with. This trip is a week long, but it is local. I thought it would be a good way for her to give of herself, have the experience, but still be close to mom and dad. Plus, I sing for them on Thursday, Scott cooks for them on Friday. I did a hike with them on Sunday. Monday night I went and picked her up so she could sleep at home. Last night I slept out there with her (on a concrete floor~now that was restfull!), with the "deal" that she would tough it out the rest of the week. Well, she isn't feeling so tough and really wants to be done with the whole thing. I think she is working WAY more than she expected.

I really want her to be bold here, but I also don't want to turn her off to public service by forcing the issue either! I think this will be good for her. Teach her to stand on her own feet and know that life isn't always cushy.

What should I do???????

Definitely have her stick it out. It builds character as they say. It may be tough work, but I really think in the long run she'll probably appreciate the fact that she stuck with it. She may even end up with a new appreciation for how helping others can be really satisfying.

My DDs get involved in any of the mission related activites our church has and our budget will allow. They have never had any issue with being away from home or doing the work. Our church has a work camp every summer for JR HIGH in which the kids spend a week painting/cleaning/yardwork in low income neighborhoods. My oldest DD did this both in 7th and 8th grade and even this year even though she's now in high school. Our youngest DD would have also done work camp, but she had to take summer PE so she could do 2 electives (band and choir) in 7th and 8th grade. Our church also does a mission trip for our kids at the end of their 8th grade year where they spend a week in Washington D.C. working with the homeless. They work in a soup kitchen, spend time with the homeless in parks, do a ton of walking. They come back absolutely worn out, but if you ask any of them if they would do it again they say, "YES!".

Yeah, you all know better than me. I talked to her a little while ago, and I think she actually had a pretty good day. I am going to go out there to sleep tonight, but this will be the LAST time. I'm also stealing her cot. If I'm going to come out there for her, she gets to sleep on the floor!

We had a Coachwhip come through the sewer system in the house my sister and I grew up in. My dad was in the Bahamas working on a yacht and my mom went in to use the bathroom and came out screaming her head off and grabbed us and threw us on top of my bed and wouldn't let us off. It took me listening to the phone conversation with the neighbor to find out what had just happened!:scared1:

I found this to be interesting. It looks like the economy is having a big affect at Disney.

I've posted this elsewhere.. but I think this answers the OP's question pretty resoundingly..

WDW Resort attendance which is usually at LEAST around 87% for the first three weeks of July (and sometimes in the 92-95% range.. ) ... is hovering around 65% occupancy for the first three weeks of July.

Normally certain resorts are sold out this time of year and for the past three weeks, they haven't even been using all the available buildings .. Now the sources I have who are very well placed to know these numbers do indicate that the attendance picks up a bit next week.. but still doesn't crack the 80% occupancy level.

For this time of year.. that's bad... bordering on disastrous. June & July are Disney's 'bread and butter' months to a large degree and the guests are just not there.

And when you add to that significant drop in attendance, Disney is paying almost TWICE as much in fuel costs to run all those DME buses, almost twice to run the intra-park/resort buses, almost twice to run the parking lot trams ... than they were in August of 2007.

Then.. factor in that the costs for raw ingredients for the restaurants have been on a steady climb, fed mostly by increased transportation costs; and resort laundry and other areas of the parks are facing increased energy usage costs.

Disney got slammed in 2008 with all the increased costs that are directly attributable to the price of oil.. and no way to recoup those hard costs beyond raising stroller rentals and the 'holiday' dining surcharge.

And remember that a 22% to 30% drop in resort bookings can mean a MUCH larger drop in park purchases and food bills ... in part because those who do bother to make the trip are much most price sensitive and consider carefully every expenditure; often forgoing a TS meal or a souvenir that they might have otherwise bought if their own personal budget wasn't also under many of the same strains as above.

Just something to think about... especially as we near August 1st and what is very likely to be a major ticket structure realignment.. and yes, at the very least.. probably a price increase for comparable entitlements...

To sum up - Yeah, it's affecting Disney big time.

Knox

Who knows? The migraines have been better lately. It is kind of exploratory surgery, I think. She had a CT scan done and they saw infection around her appendix so they are going to take that out. She has been sick to her stomache and in pain. They are going to look at her gull bladder as well while they're in there.

As much as I hate hospitals, I think for this type of surgery they should keep you one more day. But then, hospitals are full of sick people and poking and prodding residents, so maybe not.

We are good thanks for asking:thumbsup2

I think Lone-Star is the only one possibly in harms way. We are north Texas and hoping for some rain from Dolly. South Padre took a pretty good hit. Local news said a lot of people stayed there on vacations and did not evacuate. Some wanted to experience a hurricane!

We got some rain out of it but that was it. The storm went in south of us.

Jen, hope you have a quick recovery! Sorry you're going through this!

Ami, beautiful pic! Looks like we're headed to the Asheville area...still not sure of a campground yet. But we want to go next weekend if at all possible. We've wanted to visit that area for while. A few years back when they built the HGTV dream home there...they showed some beautiful views!

g8trmom1, we checked out the Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge area while visiting family in Knoxville. Not sure if you guys are looking to camp up there or not...but there were a couple of really nice campgrounds in the Townsend area!

My surgery was only an overnight stay, and much more involved than appendicitis. Technically, I was there on a "23 hour observation", and they just purposely drug their feet to give me as long as possible on Thursday. (For example, they gave my DH my prescriptions right before I was supposed to leave, and told him to go ahead and fill them, and to take his time, then they had to wait on my doctor to return after office hours to sign my actual orders.) My mom had surgery on her hairline fracture on her back, and was home by 1pm the same day.

Anyway, I hope Jen gets better soon!!

When I had my TKR last year I stayed in for 3 weeks! But over 2 weeks of that was in subacute rehab. That was a real pain, but I was having a problem with range of motion - the surgeon had to remove a lot of stuff that was left from the prior 5 surgeries - my knee was really weird looking prior to the replacement - the surgeon wanted to know how I ever got into the Army in the first place - once I got out of the hospital I really started to get better.

Okay..I've been a bit out of the loop this week, my apologies, I didn't realize Jen was ill. I knew she was having some trouble at the Fourth of July gathering. Is the appendix what was giving her the problems earlier in the month?
Both my sons have had their appendix's(sp?) out. They say it isn't genetic..but I found that kind of odd. My older son had it done 10 years ago..regular surgery and was in the hospital almost five days. My younger son had it done two years ago, and he stayed overnight, it was done laproscopically..and he had a MUCH easier recovery. I don't think he even asked for tylenol more than once. Of course he was 14 at the time..and kids bounce back so easily.

Anyway, just checking in, and was sorry to hear about Jen's situation. If you should speak to her, would you please tell her she is in my thoughts and prayers? Thanks ;)

Thanks guys and gals! I hope to feel better soon. It seems that my gall bladder is fine, however, they found out some problems related to my c section 4 years ago. Seems that some of my parts wanted to grow together with scar tissue, causing all kinds of inflammation and such. I don't have all the details, but the appendix is gone and lots of scar tissue. Needless to say, the ob/gyn was called in on the phone for consultation (which was also done on Monday, but for additional opinion.) Hey Jen, Glad to hear you are on the right track to feeling better.

On another note, we have checked into Cathedral Pines Campground. It poured the entire drive up, and the entire time I was setting up. On top of that, the girls had a couple friends over last week and they were all in the camper, well, apparently someone played with the faucet in the bathroom because after I had hooked up the water and turned it on I noticed a lot of water draining from under the camper. At first I thought it was the rain, but when I opened the door it came pouring out. The sink was completely overflowing and the floor was flooded. Oh what fun. I hope the weather is better tomorrow. We are right on the edge of Flagstaff Lake, I would like to walk around maybe take the kids fishing. Well, I'm am cold, and a bit wet. I'm off to bed. Have a great weekend everyone!

Who knows? The migraines have been better lately. It is kind of exploratory surgery, I think. She had a CT scan done and they saw infection around her appendix so they are going to take that out. She has been sick to her stomache and in pain. They are going to look at her gull bladder as well while they're in there.

Rick goes to the Doc today, too, doesn't he?

I couldn't get on the board yesterday - too much work!:headache:

Glad about Jen - got the text from Chris yesterday.:yay:

Rick went to the Dr. yesterday, and as I suspected from the radiology report we received in the mail... he has slight adhesions from a previous back surgery. Our primary has referred him to a neurosurgeon - which he goes to next Thurs.

Primary Dr advises against more surgery - but will concede to whatever the specialist wants to do. In the meantime he will be going to a pain management group today - probably for some sort of injection to ease the pain. Rick's anxious about getting a shot directly in the middle of the spine...until I reminded him that I had a spinal tap in 1999 and to suck it up and be a man!!! (No sympathy from me!)

Okay... now I have to go do some catching up on this place!!

I think this past week has been one of "drama". At church, we had two members die this week...I had to call 911 this morning for another while trying not to interrupt the worship service (he's okay), and at THD... TWO cashiers were fired on Wednesday for stealing and another for no call/no show for the third time. Now, Ami's FIL. Wow!! Bad Ju-Ju this week-not that I believe in "Ju-Ju", but overall, it's been a downer of a week.

Ami honey...if you get on the board, I'm praying for all of you. This will sound a little odd, but now the "other shoe" has dropped and the crisis is over. FIL is in a much better place. Praise God!!

I think this past week has been one of "drama". At church, we had two members die this week...I had to call 911 this morning for another while trying not to interrupt the worship service (he's okay), and at THD... Lot's of bad stuff happening. We all need a camping trip.

So here's some good things that happened to me:

My splint is finally off and I'm doing my own at home rehab for the broken arm

My son is home from his summer ROTC training at Ft. Lewis. He is going for the ARNG option and is now part of the 42nd ID in NY state and will hopefully be commissioned as a Signal officer next year.

Thunderstorms lightened up enough in Eastern PA for me to pretty much finish building my shed in the back yard.

I made reservations for camping in the Poconos the first week of August.

I don't mean to diminish the serious situations some of our friends are finding themselves in. I deal with death and illness regularly and sure do appreciate the pain and suffering the individuals and families involved go through. My condolences to those families and my wishes for a speedy recovery to the ill and infirmed. It's times like this I tell FWGirl - time to drop back and punt, and hopefully everything will take a turn for the better for everyone.

Kungaloosh!

Signal huh? Probably Div HQ in Latham.

That is my guess. He will be going into his senior year at RPI so it would be right down the road.

I figured you would be familiar with the Rainbow division. Heck, you probably were in when Dougie MacArthur was in it.;)

Not quite but close! That old fart was quite the soldier. Loved publicity but one hell of a warrior!

I retired 5 years ago and it has changed a lot since I left - almost no one left that I know well. They got rid of my old brigade and I'm not even sure if the Div is still heavy - a lot of old AR units transitioned to RSTA - not much use for M1A1s anymore. We won't be facing much heavy threat for a while. At least that's the conventional wisdom. Wish him luck for me.

How did he like Lewis? I love that place. Did he have a chance to get to Rainer? I'm sure he was at Yakima though! :lmao:

ftwildernessguy
07-27-2008, 07:38 PM
He only saw Rainier from a distance - never got off post.

He enjoyed it. He dreaded going, but now he misses it. The weather was surprisingly good the whole time he was there.

I went out for the first time yesterday!! We have a fairly new "DTD-like" shopping center in our town called Bridge Street Station. It has some mid-high end shops and some nice restaurants and a VERY nice movie theater with lounge and some adult-only balcony seating with amazing big leather reclining chairs.

We went to the movies and dinner. We saw Wall-E which was OK. I'm really surprised Wall-E is getting the acclaim it got. It thought it was only so, so.

Then we went to Dolce for dinner. While the food was fantastic, the service was sloooooooooow. The place was packed. So what we figured to be a nice afternoon out turned into a loooooooong eh.

I'm there for a year, and look at the positive outcome I had already.... although I don't know where they got the studying the least part... The MBA program must not have been consulted. Maybe they asked one kid about it, and he was real smart or something....

GAINESVILLE - The University of Florida has been named the No. 1 party school in the nation. The rankings come out each year from the Princeton Review and this is the first time the state's flagship university has been named in the top spot. The Gators came close in 1999 when the school was No. 2 and 1998, when it was third. It was fourth last year. Florida also came in first this year in the categories of students who study the least and students who pack the stadiums. The only other Florida school making the list was Florida State, which ranked 10th. The rankings come from the 2009 edition of the Princeton Review's annual college guide, "The Best 368 Colleges," which goes on sale Tuesday.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The University of Florida can raise a glass to another national title — best party school in the country.

The Gators, known for wild celebrations following national championships in football and basketball, wrested the party title away from West Virginia University and beat out the University of Mississippi and Penn State University, in the Princeton Review survey of 120,000 students released Monday.

The university has made the top 20 party school list for the past 15 years, but has never been No. 1.

My question is, when the heck did West Virginia become a place to party??? lol

Yea, most college towns don't have much to do (I hear that a lot about Gainesville, not a slam on them, I have lots of good friends that went to UF that have told me this). That's why you guys get such big crowds, and down here in Miami we can't even fill our stadium...lol.

Actually, I have lots of relatives (my moms entire side is from there, including herself), and have been there a few times. And I still ask "Since when did West Virginia become a place to party?".

To me, that's like saying the Fort is the place to build roaring campfires and roast peacocks...lol ;)

On that note, I think West Virginia is one of the most beautiful states in the country, you can't beat the views. Just a gorgeous state :P Really nice people too, but that's how most of the south is.

Oh boy..you sound like me. I have had some issues with Siatica, and my husband wants to have someone come in every couple of weeks or even once a month to help me out. Mind you..I too have NEVER had any help in the house. I told him I couldn't possibly have someone in the house until we replaced the upstairs bathroom! It's pretty much off limits to guests..and I wouldn't want anyone cleaning it either. He just shook his head. :rolleyes1

My mom on the other hand has always had a housekeeper come once a week(well, after I left home..before that it was ME!) One day I was talking to her on the phone while on my hands and knees dusting the tressle of my dining room table. Very annoyed..she asked me..."Why don't you just have the cleaning people do that?"....HELLO...I AM THE CLEANING PEOPLE MOM! :rolleyes1

I guess I should be grateful for the help..but I'm the type to clean before the cleaning person would come.
My advise is don't be a fool like me...accept the help..you've had some major surgery:hug: ..let yourself be spoiled for a bit. Now..if I could just follow my own advise.

Carol & Phyllis!!!!! You 2 sound like my wife when she has 2 legs!!! I offered to have someone come and clean the house once a week(this was a while back)...and she refused because she was afraid that if something came up on days that the maid service was scheduled to show up, she'd be too embarrassed if she werent able to clean up before the service arrived!!! My wife straightens up hotel rooms before housekeeping shows up!!! She cleans up so someone can come in and clean up!!!! Wimenz iz crazy!!!

OMG, I thought I was the only one like that!!! My dh tells me to have someone come in once a week...but it would be too much work for me to have it all picked up and neat before they got here! :rotfl: j/k

I'm one of those people who will clean the house top to bottom when I know we have guest coming. I feel all kinds of wierd if we have folks stop over when the house is not all tidy. I wish I could change it...but that's just me.

You know, this new thread title reminds me of a nasty old parsimmon tree that was on the property where my parents owned an apartment building. We would go out there every week in the summer to cut the grass. I knew those things were nasty and tart, but would convince my brothers every year that they were now "ripe" and would taste good.
