Bumping for you!
I'm taking two way radios for my 11 1/2 year old. He will be allowed to go where he wants, but he must radio me with each change of place, so I know where he is off to. This way I can always reach him too if he loses track of time. I'm going to get the two ways with many, many sub channels to lessen the chance of interference.
I'm interested in the basketball question too and also what other sports they have for the kids that get bored in the clubs or arcade.

Some parents will let their 10-year-olds roam the ship, but I don't think most parents would be comfortable with that without some clear boundaries and guidelines. It's up to you to discuss with your 10-year-old what will and will not be acceptable, when and often he needs to check in with you, curfew, etc.
No, no sign-up is necessary to use the sports court.

Last year my DS10 was allowed to roam with the many friends he made on board. We both had Walkie Talkies and would stay in contact with each other most of the day. We had the rule that he had to meet me for Dinner and the show, but most of the day was his on board. Of course on the shore excursiosn we were together, but on board there are pleny of kids for friends and with the walkie talkies, it makes for a relaxing time for both parent and son. In fact we leave next Sat. APril 13th to go again this year he loved the cruise so much.
