hi dap&i,
here are some links to a couple threads on that topic from this board - the first has itemized lists and should give you a pretty good idea - I would say $1000 for your family - I have an itemized list in the first link....
spending money (http://disboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=160316)

Cruise - also a family of four. This did not include alcohol or spa as we brought our own booze and didnt do the spa. We spent alot on pictures, alot on sourvenirs, tips, did excursions on our own.. I am going again on 8/31 - I plan to bring at least another $1000.

Just back from February 23rd Magic. We are a family of four. DH-38, Me-33, DD-14 and DS-4. We spent $1500 plus tips which were around $350. We did the Surial Bath in the spa and had 2 Sea Day Rain Forest passes which was great. We ate at Palo for Dinner and Brunch and we did drink and spent a mint on souvineers but not photos. I think this amount was just about right but I am glad I had my tips set aside as extra. I know youy can do it cheaper and I know your stateroom account can fly off the charts really fast. There were several couples at disembarkation arguing about their stateroom account charges. Every penny we spent was well worth it and then some! Can't wait to sail on the Wonder next February!

Don't worry about the heat during the summer.....the island are hot most of the year anyway!!! We always sail in the summer love. We sailed DCL 4 times in summer and once in Feb and like the weather during the summer better!!
