I hope this thread helps anyone who is looking for another "home" since VMK closed. Included here is a list of ppl who have played VMK and are now on Gaia, and a basic guide I wrote to help those of you transition over. I will be adding to this thread and try to keep it updated as often as possible.

QUICK TIPS:

Staying Family-Friendly :)

If you haven't heard...Gaia is not the place for young children. You are free to say pretty much what you want to, with some restrictions, but in many of the public rooms things can get very non-family-friendly pretty quickly. Parents, you will have to use your own discretion for your tweens and teens.

I have managed to stay away from much of the bad language in Gaia (except when there is a quest that requires you to visit public rooms). I keep my house on friends only, and only play games in private rooms (friends share their passwords with each other so we can join their games if they're on). So, if you want to avoid all the possible adult content on Gaia, just be sure you stay in private rooms with friends. It seems to have solved the problem for me.

Even though there aren't as many exciting games on Gaia, especially games where you can actually "play" with a friend, it's become a place where we can socialize and still be creative (decorate our homes, our profiles, and our characters). It's become a place where we can show our friends how much they mean to us (comments in profiles, gifting), and keep in touch with each other...which during this time, is something that many of us have needed. :)

Main Gaia Browser Page

The browser window that you open when you first log into Gaia, is like a webpage. You should keep this window open as your main window. Other windows may pop up, and that's fine, but keep this main window open. You can receive messages here (My Gaia -> Mail), view your profile (My Gaia -> Profile), play other games, shop, etc.

Houses

If you want to buy a house go to My Gaia -> House. Here you can place your home down -- either choose to let Gaia's Housing Commission place it for you, or if you can find a place yourself from the directory you can choose that option. It doesn't really matter where you place your house (our VMK rooms were not all next to each other either). But you should know that once you place your house, if you want to move it, will cost 1000 gold. See more below under "HOUSES."

Names

You can change your Gaia name 3 times at no charge. Hover your mouse over My Gaia, then click on Account. There will be a paragraph at the top that says, "Change options related to your account. Other options which haven't been migrated to the new profile system are also available." Click on the word "available," (it should be a URL link) -- this will bring you to a page where you can edit your username (can change it 3 times at no charge. After 3 times I believe it will cost something like 10,000 gold). You can also change your gender from here (2 times free), and your birthday.


VMK Guild on Gaia

Thanks to MeShellMyBelle, we have a VMK Guild on Gaia, where we can all post in one area and keep in touch with everyone at once. CLICK HERE (http://www.gaiaonline.com/guilds/index.php?guild_id=77695) to join. :)


ACCOUNT INFO:

You should look in your account -- there are many preferences that you can change there. (MY GAIA -> ACCOUNT) For example...you can choose to make your house viewable only to friends, and/or leave your profile viewable to everyone. :)

FRIENDS:

Friends List

To view your friends list and see who's online -- click MY GAIA --> FRIENDS. Above the search box on the right side there is a link "ONLINE." If you click that, you will be able to see who's online at that moment. You can send a PM to a friend here and view their profiles as well (click on "PrivateMsg" or the little chat bubble on the line next to their name to send a pm, and click on each person's name to view their profile.

You can also block out anyone who you do not wish to communicate with: Use the search box to find the name of someone you wish to ignore. When you've located them, click the box under the select colum and scroll down to the bottom and click ignore. They will be added to your "Enemies" list.

To Send a Friend Request:

You can find "Add user" link on many profiles, but if there isn't one, you can hover your mouse over MY GAIA --> FRIENDS AND ENEMIES --> In the box that says "Search for User," put in the title of your friend. When their name comes up, click the box under "Select," then scroll down to the bottom and click "Add Friend." You've just sent a friend request. :)

Finding Friends & Other People:

There are many places to find other people (if you're looking for strangers as well lol):


MY GAIA --> MY HOUSE --> Once you're inside your own house, click on Directory. This will show you a map, and your house lot will be blinking. If you click on ZOOM OUT on the top left, you can search for other areas in Gaia Towns. You can also look for an empty lot if you haven't placed your house yet, or view population in each area -- if you click on VIEW POPULATION and hover your cursor over the boxes, you will see how many ppl are in each instance. Red areas have more ppl. If you want to stay in your house after viewing the Directory, just click close on the bottom right.

Once inside your house or anyone else's, you can click EXIT and meet up just outside the house you were just in. From there, you can walk around town together. :)

When you are in a friend's house, click on Directory and hover your cursor over the map area where your friend's house is. Click on your friend's house and click ADD TO FAVORITES. You can add up to 5 friend's houses in your favorite places on the right side of your Directory.
WORLD --> WORLD MAP. Here you can view all of Gaia towns.
WORLD --> TOWNS. This will bring you right into the towns. There are NPCs here as well that provide information. You can search around by clicking on the arrows at the end of each town area. In towns, don't forget to pick up various items such as trash, flowers, and other garbage. Click on trees, rocks and bushes too -- for gold.
WORLD --> TOWNS --> CINEMAS. Here you can watch various movies and old television shows with friends. Scroll down once you're in the cinema, and find the movie you want to watch. There may be more than 1 page listed. Once you find the movie you want to watch, click on DETAILS then SHOW TIMES. Click on the showing you want to watch and you're in. Send your friend the details of the movie you're planning on watching and the time, and you can be in the same room. :)
WORLD --> VJ. Here you can watch youtube videos/movies and earn gold with friends. If you choose to make a private room, it will cost you gold.
WORLD --> SPONSORED WORLDS -- VIRTUAL HOLLYWOOD. Then click on CHECK OUT MTV’s VIRTUAL HOLLYWOOD ON GAIA, choose a game server and tell your friends where you are.
GAMES --> JIGSAW. You can play puzzles and chat with friends. Make a private room by choosing a server --> join --> create --> and then the lock icon for a private room. Enter a password for your room, click PLAY and tell friends the server and pw so they can join you.
RALLY --> Choose server (turn pike, freeway or highway) --> then either join or create a public room. Tell your friends in a pm where you are so you can meet up.
SLOTS --> Follow same instructions for above, except there are no server names...you go straight to choosing or creating a room.
CARDS --> Follow same instructions for SLOTS.
FISHING --> Follow same instructions for RALLY.
PINBALL --> Choose a SERVER or PLAY ALONE --> If you choose a server, you then have the option of creating a room and making a password so you can meet only with friends who you give the password to.
Misc. Games --> Visit the main Games page to find more new games that have been added.


EARNING GOLD & OTHER FREE ITEMS:

You can earn gold by posting in profiles as well. Every bit of surfing the site gives you gold. Don't forget to click on the Daily Chance cart that pops up each day you log in (click on every subhead each day to receive a daily reward. (HOME, MY GAIA, WORLD...etc.)

Some quick gold would be posting a comment in the chatterbox. First post is 50 gold, then it decreases from there as you post. First vote in a poll is 14 gold, then it decreases from there. First comment on a profile is 40 gold, then it decreases from there. First journal entry is 50 gold, then it decreases from there. There is also gold from commenting in a journal.

In the chatterbox, there are always "Leaving Gaia" threads where people who are quitting just give all their stuff away, so it can be put to good use. Watch out for the scam threads. Especially the ones that try to redirect you to a different page, and tell you it may log you out, so sign back in. NEVER sign back in using their link, it's a scam to get your password. But you can get things from these "leaving" threads if you are polite and ask kindly. There are also contest threads where you can "roll dice" or generate a random number to win prizes or gold.

The puzzles give really good gold. The harder the puzzle, the more gold you will get. Insane puzzles give the most gold.

The word bump gives gold and bachelors credits. I exchange the bachelors credits for bachelors caps, and then sell them in the marketplace. If you reach level 30, you also get a common item valued at 150-500 gold or so.

In the towns, shake trees, rocks, and bushes. Pick up tin cans, boots, papers, and catch bugs. You can exchange 5000 tin cans (fishing shop) for a tin hat which sells for around 30k gold. You can exchange 1000 boots (fishing shop) for another pair of boots, not sure how much it sells for in the marketplace. Exchange papers (gambino's hat shop) for hats. Sell the hats, or even the papers themselves. Exchange 5000 brown paper bags and you get a paper bag hat that sometimes sells for upwards of 50k-100k gold plus. You can exchange 50 bugs of the same color for ink (Durem Depot) and keep this ink for tattoos, or sell it in the marketplace.

You can also play the marketplace. Buy low and sell back at a higher price to make a profit. Remember though, that there is a 2% fee for selling your item.

Besides the Daily Chance mentioned above, there is also a random event prize. It will show up as a floating trunk on your screen. You won't be able to miss it. Click this trunk quickly to claim your prize. Once you have it, you can open it like a gift. If it is brown, it usually has pretty low-end items, and it's usually better just to sell it back to the marketplace.

As mentioned above, there is also Gaia Cash. You can buy things out of the shop and sell to the marketplace, but this is real money. For example though. If you bought a $25 Gaia Cash Card from Target, you would receive 2500 gaia cash, as well as either Kaya the cat or Benny the Puppy. If you used that gaia cash to buy 10 of this month's collectibles and sold them back for even 30k gold, you would make 300k gold in a matter of an hour or so. But if you don't want to go the "real money" route, I don't suggest this, because it can be very expensive and addicting.

In Towns:

Trash can be turned into little Peyo at Gambino Hat Rack where it might be turned into special clothing for your avatar to wear!

You can collect more trash by fishing or by picking it up around Town.


HOUSES:

Everyone has a link to their house address -- if you're in the HOUSE area, click on the link below "Share my home." Just PM the address to all your friends. The bad thing is, you can only have 5 links to your friends' homes in your Directory. What I did, is paste my friends' house URLs into a txt file and saved it on my computer. This way you can save as many as you like, then just cut and paste it into your browser. Woot!

By the way, you can also make your house open only to friends if you want (highly suggestible). In your HOUSE window, there are preferences listed at the bottom. You can also go into your ACCOUNT area from MY GAIA.

If you know someone's profile and if their house is unlocked, you can always get into their house. If someone has their house set to "friends only," then you can only get in if you're a friend. If someone's house is locked, you cannot get in.

For example, my house is set to "friends only." If you know someone's profile, you can get into their house. My profile link is http://www.gaiaonline.com/profiles/10113922

My house link is http://www.gaiaonline.com/homes/?user=10113922 All you have to do is change the number that comes after "user=" to the same number that is in the profile of the person's house you wish to visit. Then put that link into your browser location bar. :)

Also...if you didn't know -- there is an awesome site with information on Gaia -- http://www.tektek.org. You can do all kinds of things there, as well as make your dream avatar, preview every item that has ever been out in Gaia and the price even if it's no longer available, find a design for your profile, get signature images, find information on Gaia quests, and more. :goodvibes

MAKE YOUR HOUSE DARK WITH LAMPS ON:

To make your house dark and just keep lamps on: Hover mouse over MY GAIA -> Click on HOUSE -> Click on DESIGN MY HOME -> Move over items from the left side to the right side into your home inventory -> Click on DESIGN MY HOME (on top of the box that has a roof shape) -> After Gaia Homes loads, you will be in your editing mode. Click VIEW on upper left -> Then click the circle-shaped yellow sun in the upper right-hand corner. This will turn your house lights off. Now you can click on any lamps you have in the room to turn them on and then off if you choose. Save your home after you're done. :)


MONTHLY COLLECTIBLES:

Each month they sell a Thank You Letter, but you can't find out what's inside it until the 15th of the month. Each letter costs $2.50. I usually wait until they open to see if I like the collectible inside. Each collectible comes with 2 different choices of items -- you can either choose 1 of those items (which usually comes with many different poses), or you can keep the collectible letter for a long time so you can one day sell it for a lot of gold in the marketplace.

Many of the cool items that are no longer for sale in the Cash Shop, can be found in the Marketplace. Depending on the rarity, they can cost quite a bit of gold. The only way to get those items, is to pay with gold. If you don't have the gold and really want a certain item, you can buy Gaia Cash with real money (see"Gaia Cash" in Guide) and buy an expensive item in the shop with Gaia Cash. Then sell it back for half price. Keep doing this until you've accumulated the gold amount that you need to spend in the Marketplace. If you have items you don't want, you can check the Marketplace to see what that item is selling for. Maybe you're holding onto something that's worth quite a bit of gold. Put it for sale (see "Selling Items from the Marketplace for gold" in Guide).

To make your way to the regular shops, hover your mouse over "Market" and click "Shops."

You should end up in the Barton Boutique, which is ran by the NPC characters Ian and Rufus (currently Project Runway winner is taking up Rufus's spot). Each store is run by a different NPC character or set of characters. Sometimes you can exchange items with that character for a niftier item.

To change shops, click on the up or down arrows just to the side where other shops are listed, and scroll through the list. Click on the shop you'd like to enter.

From MTV Sunset Couture, there is access to MTV's Virtual Hollywood
After buying a hairstyle from Salon Durem, you must go to your customize avatar/dress up page immediately and save!!
Liam at Crate and Apparel currently has a quest running. Click "quest update" under his picture to start it if the quest bubble doesn't come up.
Prize and Joy only accepts tickets. You can buy tickets from the marketplace, or win them from the games Slots and Cards (you need to buy tokens to play those games, though! Click on this link: http://www.gaiaonline.com/gaia/store.php?id=14f247 then click on the tokens booth to buy there)
From Sam's Body and Parts you can access the car customise page.
La Victoire is also known as the "Gaia Cash Shop". To access it, hover your mouse over "Market" and click "Gaia Cash Shop".
You can try on items on your avatar at most stores. Click on the item, and then click "preview"
Selling items back to the store for gold: You can sell items back to the store: If you want to sell something, either after you buy something in a shop or something you've had for a while, you need to go to any of the shops. Just underneath is your inventory window. Click the left arrow in your inventory window. The item you just purchased should show up there, and any other items that you are able to sell. Click on the item -- if you are able to sell it, it will tell you how much gold you will make if you sell it back. Usually the price is half of what it costs. -- AmberDaze


Buying Items from the Marketplace

To access the marketplace, hover your mouse over "Market" and click "Marketplace". You need a special pass to use the market which costs 500 gold. You'll be notified upon entering the marketplace, and they do give you the option. The Marketplace consists of players' stores selling items. Sometimes these items can be lower than store price, higher, or exactly. You can also buy "retired" items there.

Selling Items from the Marketplace for gold

You can also sell things in the Marketplace. Hover your mouse over Market then click on Marketplace. In the right-hand column where it says, "My Store," click , then click on "sell item." Use the arrow keys in your inventory to find the item you want to sell (items you are wearing will not show up in your inventory). When you've found the item you wish to sell, click on it. You then have to fill out the following information: Auction Duration, Listing type (you can allow ppl to bid on your item like an auction, or just have the ability to buy it), Buy now price (if not doing auction), and Starting Bid Price & Bid Increment (if doing an auction). Click "Next" and you're on your way to making some gold! -- AmberDaze


CHANGING YOUR HAIRSTYLES:

Hair...everyone needs a change every once in a while. Well, in Gaia, you have to purchase your hairstyles. First, you would visit the Salon Durem (Market --> Shops --> Salon Durem). The cheapest hairstyle costs 25 gold or 1 Gaia cash. You cannot keep hairstyles in your inventory, so make sure you just purchase one at a time until you are ready to change again. There are some very expensive hairstyles as well, costing up to 6120 gold or 102 Gaia cash.

GAIA CASH:

If you want to, you can spend real money on Gaia for your virtual character. You can choose to purchase an actual physical cash card (which you can buy in stores such as Target), or you can purchase Gaia cash online via PayPal (credit card), home phone/DSL, or you can mail in a check or money order. Gaia cash purchased online will allow you to receive your cash immediately. Here's the breakdown:

$5 USD.........500 Gaia Cash
$10 USD.......1000 Gaia Cash
$25 USD.......2500 Gaia Cash
$50 USD.......5000 Gaia Cash

In the stores, you can either pay for an item with gold (which you make on the site playing games and doing various other things) or you can pay with Gaia cash. When an item says it costs (for i.e.) 1320 gold/22 Gaia cash, you can either purchase it with 1320 gold or 22 Gaia cash. You would need to have had to purchase cash in increments of either $5, $10, $25, or $50 (see above chart) prior to buying this item. So, if you have purchased $5 USD for Gaia cash, you now have 500 Gaia cash. That 22 Gaia cash would come out of the 500, which would leave you with a total 478 Gaia cash after your item purchase.

If you find it hard to make gold, and don't mind spending real money on virtual items, you can purchase Gaia cash, buy something expensive in the store, and sell it back for half price (gold). Now you have gold in your account and you can spend it in the stores or the marketplace (which only accepts gold).


PROFILES:

You can click on people's names to view their profile when you are in your friend's list (My Gaia -> Friends and Enemies), or click on their avatar in the forums, other profiles or other rooms. Everyone gets to make a profile. To see your profile, hover your mouse over My Gaia and click on Profile. You can delete any comment left for you that you want. To edit your profile, hover your mouse over My Gaia and click on Account. From here you can do many things to personalize your account, including your profile. You can choose style of profile and whether you would like a public or private profile. To change your basic profile information, just click on the links to the right in your Edit Profile area. You have the options to change the following information: About Me, Details, Signature, and Theme, and here you can view your profile as well.

There is much you can do with your profile if you play around with it -- you can also visit http://www.tektek.org to find a premade profile.


Multimedia in Your Profile

You can fill your multimedia space with music or another video. Go to http://www.tektek.org -> Gaia Profiles -> Youtube Video. Put in the link of the youtube song/video in "Original Link," then click Convert. If you want the song to Autoplay, click Autoplay & copy the link. If you don't want it to Autoplay, just click the link already given. Go to http://www.gaiaonline.com - hover your mouse over My Gaia & click Account at the bottom. Click Multimedia on the right & insert the link you copied from TekTek.org. Then click Submit, or Preview to see what your video is going to look like.

You can use playlist.com to create a playlist for your profile. After you've created a playlist there, you can then generate a code specifically for Gaia. You put this code in My Gaia -> Account -> Multimedia (which is one of the links in the column to the right).

Wish Lists in Your Profile

You can create a wish list of things that you would like, and it will show up in your profile. Browse the Marketplace or the stores, or other people's profiles to find items that you would like, and then click on Add to Wishlist. Then hover your mouse over My Gaia, then click on Account at the bottom of the list. Click on link on right -- Wish List. You can choose to show certain items to others on your wish list, or keep them private. :) When someone gifts you something or when you've purchased an item on your wish list, be sure to update that on your wish list as well. :)

GIFTING OTHERS:

My favorite part of Gaia -- to be able to surprise someone with something they were wishing for, or to send a gift, "just because." You can buy something in a shop, then click the left arrow in your inventory window just below the shop. The item you just purchased should show up there. Click on it, and choose to give as a gift. Another way you can send a gift, is to go to your inventory and view all items. Find the item you wish to gift, click on it and choose to send as a gift. You can also trade gifts, but the other person would need to be there to accept the gift.


HOW TO COORDINATE A COMMUNITY MOVE:

During the last week of May, 2008, some friends decided that we wanted to try and make a VMK community. We had planned to actually do it the next night, but our test turned into the real thing -- it just sort of happened. We ended up quickly contacting as many ppl as we could who were on, but not everyone we had planned was online. Our first VMK community is called, "VMK Town: Friends 4 Ever (heh, our section is titled, "Got Days?"). We have 21 people living in our neighborhood, and 1 non-vmker (more on how this happened below).

I hope I can explain this clearly, because it really is fairly easy to do -- it just takes a lot of coordination and patience. :)


Choose a community coordinator. This person will be the one to scout out a full 9-section block of vacant lots. You will also be the first one to place your home. If there isn't already a link in your profile to your home (doesn't matter if your house is not placed yet), then you should put the link in there (I used BB code and pasted my house link in my ABOUT US section of my profile). You can also send friends a pm with your house link (see HOUSE page for your link). But it was very easy for me to tell someone to meet me at my house -- link is in my profile.

Ask friends if they want to live in your VMK community. Decide on a time when you all can meet on Gaia (possibly gather in a game room or get on IM so you can speak to friends in real time).

Find out if friends have ever placed their home. If they have never placed their home, it will be free to place their home the first time. All they need to do is hover their mouse over MY GAIA, click on HOUSE, and choose the type of house they want (there are 3 styles). Once they've done this, they will have to choose "I'll place my home." Community coordinator does the same if they have never placed their home. Tell friends to stand by -- as soon as you place your house you will tell them to click on the link in your profile to go to your house.

If a friend has already placed their home and wants to move it, they would need to have 1,000 gold in their account in order to click on relocate. They cannot click on RELOCATE MY HOME unless they have 1,000 gold. Once they've clicked to relocate, they would need to click on "I'll place my home." Now they wait. Community coordinator does the same if they have never placed their home. Tell friends to stand by -- as soon as you place your house you will tell them to click on the link in your profile to go to your house.

The Community Coordinator needs to locate an vacant 9-block section..so you need to go to town. Here are a couple of ways to get into town: you can click on the "Go to Town" link on the HOUSE page; hover your mouse over Community and click on Towns; or you can go directly to a friend's house.

Once you're in town, you can view the Directory's population chart. Either way you get into town, once you're there, click on Directory at the bottom of that window. The blinking square block will show you which block you are currently in. If you look at the legend at the bottom, the green houses are vacant. If you close the Directory you will be back in town. If you saw green houses in the Directory, you would see white vacant signs while you are in town.

Go back to the Directory. In the upper right-hand corner, click the arrows to go in either direction (N, S, E or W) on the map...eventually you will find sections with vacancies.Once you've found an entire 9-section block of vacant towns, choose one and enter it. Find a vacant lot and place your house down.

Now is the time to tell friends to click on the link in your profile (or pm if you've sent them your link in a message). Once friends begin arriving, have them exit and locate a vacant sign. Once they put their house down, they can hang around in the area to help show newcomers where there are still vacant lots. Once 6 plots have been taken in your section, you can check the directory to see where there are still green houses (vacant lots). In the Directory, friends' houses will show up in a blue color. Your home will show up as yellow.

Once houses start going down, you will have to hurry -- people like to move near others, and there may be strangers showing up to join your town. Move quickly to place everyone.



OUR DISCOVERIES:

One of us had a wonderful idea -- why not try and save plots with mules? This way, friends who were unable to put their house down with us, would be able to switch with our mules. It sounded like a perfect plan. Until I tried it. The moment I lifted a mule's house off its plot, another house took its place -- I didn't even see a person there (they must not have placed their own home...they must have had Gaia place it for them). So, now there is a stranger living among one of our VMK sections. I would have tried it again, but I didn't want to spend another 1000 gold without a guarantee that our friend would take over the plot. We would have gladly spent the gold on friends to live near us, but it doesn't really make sense to pay 1000 gold each if it isn't guaranteed. I've sent a message to Gaia to see about their letting us have VMK communities...will let you know if I hear back.

So, someone has to take charge -- friends all have to get ready to place their homes -- everyone has to be ready to go when the Community Coordinator says "Go" -- and everyone who places their homes has to help the people who show up after they have placed their house.

All you veterans, am I missing something here/there? I find the games to be quite basic...I mean only 5-6 puzzles (good gold earner though) and none of them with cute little gaians, lol. Word bump is something I like but you have to play a long time just to get like 8 gold! Anyway I only see about 6 games that really are kind of cheesy except for pinball (it wouldn't let me race even though I made a car and got a license...my car isn't showing up, just the stuff I bought to put on it?

I've never done myspace or facebook so maybe you guys are more familiar with those and use this as a creative outlet in that form. I never spent much time creating rooms so creativity is not what I'm looking for for myself, though I enjoy the works of others.

I have had a hard time just giving up on it bc so many of my vmk friends are there though. Are you other places as well that might appeal to me?

I am completely lost as to what the social aspect of this is. The most I am aware of are the profiles, which seem nothing more than Gaia myspaces... which is fine but, there is are reasons I prefer Facebook to Myspace. ;) And I already have accounts like that.

Car, when you're on the HOUSE page in Gaia where it asks do you want to place your home or have your home placed for you...If you want Gaia to place your home, click on "Place my home for me." This should pop up a window (if it doesn't load, click F5 to refresh that pop up window). This should bring you to town where you should start to see vacant lots (you may also see houses). You can go N, S, E or W to go to other areas of town. Once you find a vacant lot you like, click on it. :)

Hehe... :hug: To see who's online at the same time you are, view your friends list and clicking "Online" (there's a link just to the right above your friend's list). We either pm each other where we are, or, you could get a list of your friend's passwords and server preferences and see if they are ever in a game room. We have a group that just happens to like playing puzzles. If we ever wanted to drop in on any of them, we just look for them in one of the game servers and put in their pw. If we want them to meet us some place else, we could either tell them in the puzzle room or send them a pm. :)

It was my birthday on May 23, so we sort of ended up in my house and wooohoooo --- party! We were even entertained by the many outfits of Penny... Hmmm, not sure if "entertained" is the correct word, but it was pretty amusing. By the way, don't think I allow ppl to stand on my furniture like Disney and Panda did -- she got into BIG trouble! Oh no!! LOL You have to stop going into the populated areas of towns lol. Check the directory to see which towns have no ppl in them (view Directory -> View Population. Hover your mouse over the directory -- yellow areas are empty, and red areas are highly populated. If you hover your mouse over the squares in the directory, it will tell you how many Gaians are in that part of town...look toward the bottom. To find another part of town, click on the arrows up top right to go N, S, E or W until you find an area in town you want to go in, then click that square. :)

Pink, I've added your VMK title to the list. TY :) It's not an easy thing to have an entire square just for VMKers...I personally don't think it matters too much though. :)

Well...there are certain items that are called "Collectibles." Each month, an item many of the collectible items that are/were never available in stores, were either available in the Cash Shop, or.

From the Guide: MONTHLY COLLECTIBLES:

Each month they sell a Thank You Letter, but you can't find out what's inside it until the 15th of the month. Each letter costs $2.50. I usually wait until they open to see if I like the collectible inside. Each collectible comes with 2 different choices of items -- you can either choose 1 of those items (which usually comes with many different poses), or you can keep the collectible letter for a long time so you can one day sell it for a lot of gold in the marketplace.

Many of the cool items that are no longer for sale in the Cash Shop, can be found in the Marketplace. Depending on the rarity, they can cost quite a bit of gold. The only way to get those items, is to pay with gold. If you don't have the gold and really want a certain item, you can buy Gaia Cash with real money (see info in Guide) and buy an expensive item in the shop with Gaia Cash. Then sell it back for half price. Keep doing this until you've accumulated the gold amount that you need to spend in the Marketplace. If you have items you don't want, you can check the Marketplace to see what that item is selling for. Maybe you're holding onto something that's worth quite a bit of gold. Put it for sale (see info in Guide).

Hey. You might mention that there is a VMK Guild that everyone can join. There we have our own private forum. :)

Go to The Community Tab and click on Guilds.
Then click on Search in the middle of the picture.
Then type in VMK in the search box and click search.
Click on the guild and join us. :)


I also agree with Car. I love doing the puzzles. Except that besides changing the first puzzle after a week, all the others are the same. I haven't seen the one in Day's pics. Also, for some reason, puzzles haven't been giving me much or any gold for the last few days. :(

I would like to thank everyone for helping to coordinate what I think is the largest VMK community thus far on Gaia. I think we managed to place up to 26 VMKers in a related area, with about 20 of them being inside one 9-section neighborhood! WooooHoooo! I have a few pics -- will post them later.

I will also post in the Guide, how we managed to accomplish this. I would be glad to help others in their efforts to move near friends, especially if you have a large group. I'll post a plot map a bit later so you can get an idea of how we're all located. :)

UPDATE ON MOVE TO VMK COMMUNITY:

I thought I would make a quick post to let everyone know how things went. Overall, we managed to secure 32 spots. We had hoped to transfer 10 spots over to friends who weren't able to be there with us. Unfortunately, this is proving to be too difficult, since Gaia's Housing commission places homes automatically when ppl ask them to place homes for them. It seems that they will place a new home in one that was most recently lifted. So, we now have a stranger living in our "VMK Town: Friends 4 Evr."

I would like to help another group (large or small), place their homes near each other. The only way to guarantee that you get a home placed is to actually be there -- no one can place a home down for you and switch with you later (it was a great idea, but sadly, it isn't a guarantee). For 1000 gold, it isn't worth it to try on all the houses we've placed. We would have done that if we could guarantee a friend could place their house, but there is no way to do that.

So, I would like you to place your name on this list, and list friends that you would like to live near. If you can message your friend and confirm that they would be willing to meet online one day (to be decided later) to place their home, that would be wonderful.

I am so disappointed that this did not fully work out the way we planned, and that we now have 10 friends without homes near us. I truly hate that I have to disappoint all of you.

Have you saved those things to your inventory? Click on the purse in the bottom right-hand corner to open your purse and save the things you find in town. :)

once he is full you need to go back to the character on the steps and click him again.

Did you already choose one of the 3 houses for this character and click "I'll place my house" for your second character? If you did not, this is might be why you cannot see your second character's house.

Do we ever actually sit on the furniture? It didn't appear so and I'm not going to waste my gold on too much of it if it's not usable. (In VMK I tried to make sure I had plenty of seats for everyone.)

What do I do with the stuffed armadillo I won in Pinball? I can't seem to sell it, carry it, or put in my house. Does it just sit in my inventory?

You can put this on your character and walk around with it on the floor (you can do 2 poses with it next to your avatar). Go to "Dress up" (link on very bottom of page; or MY GAIA -> AVATAR and click on VIEW ALL ITEMS (upper right side of box surrounding your inventory items). Then click EQUIP ITEMS (upper left side of box surrounding your inventory items). It should be under ITEMS. Choose a pose you like and click SAVE to save your avatar.

For a playlist, I used Playlist.com.

I created my playlist there and when viewing it, at the bottom you can choose Generate Code.
It then give you choices and click on the Gaia choice.
Then choose which playlist.
Choose color of player, leave auto start and choose if you want random/shuffle then click get code.
Copy the code provided.

Then, when viewing your profile, click on the Edit My Profile Layout at the top right.
Make sure you have a Media section in the profile. On the Media section of the profile, click on edit.
Then paste the code into the URL box and click update.
Save your changes to the profile.
OR...
Go your My Gaia > Account. Then on the right side click on the link for Multimedia. Paste the link into the link box and submit.

On playlist.com, they have a 100 track limit. :)


For the Armadillo that you win in the pinball, you can use that as a power up in the pinball game. It will give you an extra ball to play with. There are several power ups in the game. Of course I made the mistake of looking at all the cool stuff in the shops last night and now I'm all about getting the gold because I want stuff! So I am wondering, all that trash, the bugs, and flowers--can any of that be sold for gold or only used for exchanges? The quest that's running in the one shop--is that something that a newbie just learning her way around should be able to do? What types of tasks are there?

You can sell pretty much anything in the marketplace. It does take 500 gold so that you can trade/buy/sell there. But I think it's worth it in the long run.
The flower bouquets cost gold to get made. But when you get them made, you can place them in the house inventory to place in your house. They just lay down.

You can change your mouth size and expression, but you can't change your eyes/color, or skin color unless you delete your avatar and start again. Deleting your avatar lets you choose your features over again, while keeping all your items in your inventory. :)

You know. People were saying how out dated VMK was becoming. Baloney. They never played Gaia. At least in VMK we could actually sit on the furniture, walk without looking like we're all wearing skirts, dance, and change how we look all the time. Also we could decorate our rooms without having to leave them and change our clothes at almost any given moment without leaving the room we're in.

In many ways, VMK was a lot more advanced than Gaia. Unfortunately (or fortunately which ever way you look at it), those that run Gaia can promote it better than Disney wanted to promote VMK. They also know how to make money off of it and keep it running which Disney never wanted to do with VMK. :(

It happens. :( Also, many times hackers manage to annoy you as well. When I was watching a movie once, one of the ppl in the room made it look like my character was saying things...not nice things. It was very frustrating to say the least. I reported 2 of the ppl in the room who I thought were behind it. About 2 weeks later, they sent out an announcement saying that they were doing things to stop hackers from doing that.

Hackers also pop into game rooms from time to time. For ie in puzzles, they have sent messages that look like they're from Admin...or say something like "you've won a gift click here," or "send us your login and pw so we can help stop hackers." DO NOT EVER CLICK ON THESE LINKS -- Admin will never ask for your login information.

Hi Pink,
Aww, don't feel lame. It is confusing at first. It does grow on you and become fun though. I am still learning so am not the best person to help but I will tell you what I have figured out so far.
When you click towns you do only go to that room with only those three NPC's. IIf you click on "Directory" lots of boxes will come up and each one is it's own town. You can click on the little brown squares in each block to enter that particular town or add to favorites. It is in these towns that you may see people (you can also view by population), pick flowers or bugs, shake trees etc. Under my favorites you can add your house as well as some friends houses so you can just teleport there.
To find friends most of the time we all play on a particular game server so you can look down the list for a familiar name and join that room. You can also send an IM to someone to figure out a place to meet up.
There is also a VMK guild on there that is free to join where you can ask questions. There are about 100 members, many from here. Go under "MY Gaia" then "Guilds" then I guess seach for VMK.
If you look at someone's profile you can also see their friend list and can add people that you know.
You can have many screens open and actually be in mulitple places at once on Gaia.
There are many places you can go to if you want to see people. There are also a bunch of quests to help you figure things out and get free items.
I am DreamTulips on Gaia because it wouldn't let me have DreamTulip even though it doesn't seem to be taken :(
Like I said, I am still figuring things out but I hope this helps you find your way around a little more.

:hug: Pink that's just how I was about 3 weeks ago..DreamTulip is right, it is confusing. You should join the VMK guild, that is how we talk to each other, and make a Gaia profile, it's like My Space..I had a BIG problem trying to make one...and I am still working on it. It's fun, there are some really weird characters there ( and I don't mean Goofy and Pluto). I haven't seen anyone in game from VMK, but I talk to them on their profiles. It takes some time to get used to (I am still feeling my way around, 2-3 weeks later), but it is becoming well worth it. On that screen on the right side where all the links are. Under the only black word there "Profile" are 3 indented links. The bottom one is Multimedia.

I know. It's kinda dumb the way they have that set up. :(


HappyGoLucky: I don't know what's inside the gift boxes. But, you can open them up in your inventory.
Go to My Gaia - Avatar. Then click on the All Items link at the top right of the box. It will show everything in your inventory. Find and click on one of the boxes. It will then ask you if you want to open this item? Click yes to open it.

If these were gifts from others, you'll want to open them. If they are ones that you got playing around Gaia or bought yourself, they may be worth more unopened than what you may get out of it. Check out tektek to see if you can find out what the boxes give you.

Hmm. I have no idea why yours would look different from what I'm seeing.
I do see that you're using the Gaia profiles. You can try going to your profile page. Then select Edit My Profile Layout. Make sure to have a Multimedia box and past your code in that box.

OK. So that's why you didn't have it. You can delete the playlist box by clicking on the Edit My Profile Layout and clicking the X box on it. I know it's dumb the way they have both it and a multimedia box. But, apparently, playlist.com's lists will not work in that playlist box. Only in the multimedia. :confused:
