So my sister was riding her bike in 6 inch heels and fell. Suprise suprise.
Now she's got a gash somewhere between her hip and her thigh, I'm not sure as I didn't see it.
She's in the ER now and she might have to get stitches.
If anyone's had them, can you tell me what they do?
I've only had 'dissolvible stitches' that they used to close up my leg after surgery, but I was still under when they did it.

hm I honestly dont know for sure what they do, but I'm guessing is that they patch up stuff to try to rebuild that skin.. but they aren't bad one bit ;)
I got some right on my forehead!

I'll describe my last stitches to ya. :O
They sat me down and then put like a shot a few times. Then, they numbed it and started to sew.
That's it. Really, if I didn't look at what they were doing I wouldn't have noticed much at all. The only thing that hurt were the shots.
BUT that was my arm so the hip might be different.

Oh wow. I've had them done before, but it was when I was 4, so 10 years ago. All I remember is not feeling a thing, but I had to get them in the back of my head, and they had me in a body wrap thing so I couldn't move. I didn't have the dissovlable ones, and I had to get them out, but I don't think it was painful...well, except falling and shattering the glass end table when my head hit it and then hitting my head on the wooden part of the couch.
Hah, I was trying to stand on a ball like they do in the circus--but hey, I was 4 :]

I've had stitches twice (and then the in the mouth stitches)
Basically it's because the wound wouldn't heal itself in a way. So the stitches bind the two sides of the opening together and hold it like that so they can connect back together.
They numb you...it's pretty painless and then you get them removed about a week later depending on what your doctor says.
Mine where both on my chin...one from figure skating and one from a bike accident.
I hope your sister feels better.

I've had 87. I had to remove some of mine on my own. They suck. Going in the hurt, coming out they hurt. they just all around hurt. They tear the skin, if left in too long, and they rip coming out sometimes.
i'm not going to sugar coat it, thats my experience. i've had them on my thighs and my stomach. your sister is in for some pain if shes got them.

Thanks everyone. They're back from the ER.
She said they numbed it and then sewed it up. It's on her groin, right in the fold where your thigh meets your hip/abdomen.

That seems like the worst place because it moves all the time >.<

Holy crow, well, in a few years when she looks back on this she can say "My doctor said I should go commando"
Anywho, I'm sorry Sonya, I hope she heals quickly
One question, why was she riding a bike in heels?

They were mine until I twisted my ankle in them on a special occasion. I told my mom to get rid of them, but lo and behold Rebecca found em.
She got yelled at big time.
She thought she was gonna get her leg amputated and I was like 'I have a better chance of getting my leg amputated than you ever will!' and it shut her up.

Ouch!
My sister was cutting wood in flipflops two summers ago and sliced her toe open.
She had to get stitches and they put novacaine(sp?) right in the wound with a needle. Then they stitched her toe up.
She has a crazy scar left there.
