Too late for duluxe dinning plan for Sep?

I am going to WDW in Sep. I am interested in booking the deluxe dinning plan but I am afraid it's too late to book my favourite resturant during the trip.

It is a must to book the package before planing the meal by ADR?
Could I upgrade to dinning plan/deluxe dinning plan after booking the resort package?

You have to book a package to get the free dining, and I am guessing that a whole lot of the resturants are booked up for September. I made my ADRs at the 180 point and a few of them were like the very last few tables to get. The resturants will be horribly crowded in September, but if you do have an ADR it should be no problem.

You need to book the package with dining before your arrival if you want to use the dining plan. If you have booked a qualifying package, you can add or upgrade dining anytime within a certain period (I'm not sure when it has to be done but it must be done before arrival). If you want free dining, a free dining package must be available at the resort of your choice during your travel dates.

However, you do not have to book a package to make a dining reservation. You don't even have to have any room reservation at WDW to book a dining reservation less than 180 days from the day you want to dine.

If you want reservations for anytime during the free dining period, it's suggested you make them as soon as possible. If it turns out you don't want them, you can cancel them.

My sister just upgraded her free dining package to deluxe dining (she just had to pay the difference). She was able to get all the ADR's she was interested in. Some of the times are exactly what she wanted but you just deal.

I just got off the phone making my ADR's for 9/6 - 9/13. I got everything I wanted, when I wanted with the exception of California Grill - I got it - just earlier then I wanted.

You can call for your ADR's before booking the package, to see if you can get what you want. I think that was your question? Be aware that any prepaid meals will require you to give a credit card (and pay? I haven't ever booked these w/o the DDP) but once you switch to the plan you can just call back and have that noted. You can book those ADRs w/o a reservation at Disney (package or not).
However to get the Deuxe Dining you will have to book a package.
In September most people are booking trips with the Free Dining Package then paying to upgrade to Deluxe Dining.

Personally I would book the trip to assure I'd actually be going (resort choices are slimmer now). With the Deluxe Plan you'll "a lot" of ADRs compared to the Base plan. Why do that if you don't know for sure if/when you'll be there.

you can defintely upgrade to the deluxe dining package after booking your regular package. that is what i did. also im going during labor day weekend and im still switching around my dining adrs and have yet to have an issue getting what i want (granted i like to eat later in the evening so my times are around 7:30-8) however if you are looking for more popular character dinners you may want to call and book them now even if you dont have your entire trip planned out-you can always ccancel an adr if need be
