Can you book a package with the DDP and purchase an AP instead of MYW tix? I've read that if you currently have an AP you can purchase a DDP package w/out MYW tix. What if you do not already have the AP, but want to purchase it as part of the package? Can you do this? Hope this was clear.

Not that I am aware.
I think what many do is book with a MYW ticket, then exchange and pay the different in upgrading to an AP once at WDW.

You can't purchase an AP as part of a package.

You must have the AP when you check in if you purchase the AP room/dining package. The resort front desks can't issue APs. You can get them at the ticket windows and Guest Relations at the parks, or Guest Relations at DTD.

I'm not sure whether or not you could use an AP voucher.

OK, the responses so far are what I [I]thought[I] was the case. I haven't owned an AP since a couple of years before the dining plan came into being, so the details were kinda foggy to me.

Now, I have a MYW package with DDP booked (10day parkhoppers) with a AAA rate. If I upgrade my tix to an AP when I get to WDW, will I be able to keep the dining plan? Or will I "lose" it? Same question for the AAA discount... will I lose the discount if I upgrade to APs?

You won't lose it. After you check in take your room key with your ticket on it to Guest Services at any park (you don't have to enter the park, they all have one outside the gates) or Downtown Disney and say you want to upgrade your ticket to an annual.
