Hi all! Wednesday evening at 11pm I smoked my last cigarette....I've been a non smoker for almost 48 hours and could use some words of encouragement. I can see each hour getting better, but I spent the better part of yesterday crying and being a big "b" to everyone I know. Today I made an effort to keep very busy, but tonight is a challenge for me.
Any words to keep me going would be great!

My friend at school has been a non-smoker for about 80 days. :thumbsup2 It is hard, but it is a gift to yourself and your family. Keep on the straight and narrow....have a glass of water, and know that we are very proud of your decision!!! :grouphug:

Good for you!!! I quit smoking many years ago "cold turkey" and it wasn't easy but it was sooooo worth it. I have had no desire to start again and in fact "reformed smokers" are even worse on smokers than non-smokers. If you need encouragement you can PM me and I will try to help you but you are the only one who can do it. You have started and each day it will get a little easier.
Sending a little pixie dust your way.:tink:

Thanks Debbie and 4everlluvDisney...I'm hoping it will get a little easier every day. Knowing it will get better is what gets me through a tough moment (and I'm having a lot of these). I'm 40 and started smoking when I was 15. I know I need to be patient with myself as 25 years of addiction is going to be a challenge to break free of.
Just send me some positive energy folks (even if you don't post), I can use it!

Better than positive energy....

look for a book called "the only way to stop smoking permanently" by Allen Carr (penguin publishers)... this book changed my life. If you really want to stop, find it and read it. It's amazing.

another idea... nicotine patch.. It really does work, it takes away the entire craving.

I used to smoke like a construction worker and really wanted to stop when my kids were born.

Another great idea... google "effects of nicotine" ... that should scare you straight.

but, the first idea is the best. Get a hold of his book. He did die of lung cancer in November 2007, but he smoked up to 100 cigs a day until he finally quit close to the age of 60. It was too late for him, but his book saved my life and my dh's life since we stopped hopefully in time.

good luck. Actually with his book, you won't need luck. You just won't ever smoke again, and you won't have withdrawl symptoms, and you won't eat more. :)

I quit smoking 12 years ago by using the patch. Whenever I have a craving or getting difficult, I looked into the mirror and keep telling myself "you can do it".

Good for you :)

I recently also quit so I know how you feel (it's been maybe a month at most).

I had to do it by associating a negative conotation with my smoking habits. So for months as I was smoking a ciggy all I would think about was how bad it was for me and how much money I was spending. Eventually I just didn't want them anymore.

Hang in there and if you need help please ask :)

Hang in there. It's tough, 9 years here. Life is so much easier as a non-smoker. It's worth it. Keep us up to date.

Morning of day 3 and I feel good. Thank you all for your encouragement. I did read Allan Carr's Easyway book and it really made sense while I was reading it, but when my emotions kick in I am seriously not rational at all.
I know now that if I don't quit at age 40 I'll be a smoker for the rest of my life and I just can't accept that.
My sincere thanks for your positive energy!

Congrats on making it to day three. Just remember that your friends and family will understand if you're a little *****y, and don't give in to the old "I'll have just one" it never works.

keep going. That easyway book is no where near as detailed as the other "the only way to stop smoking permanently". Try to find it, it's about 250 pages and really can make a big difference. The easyway book is just too short and didn't do very much for me either.

I am so proud of you! I've never been a smoker, but I can understand how strong you have to be to stop any addiction that has been part of your life for so long.

What a great thing you are doing! You CAN do it! You ARE doing it!

Congrats!

You all are so amazing...It's great to be part of a community that is supportive of one another, even though we don't really know each other. If that is not amazing I don't know what is!
Thanks again all! I know I can do it because smoking just one cigarette is not an option.

Hang in there! The three's are always the worse. Be prepared to fight back and show those potlickers you mean it! Three hours, three days, three weeks, three months, three years. Statistics show that if you can make it past all of the threes you will never touch a ciggie ever again. Set small goals and you can do it. I went through a Costco pail of suckers:thumbsup2

Seven years for me. I won't tell you the number of years that I *did* smoke. :) Me quitting was fairly a no-brainer. I was in the hospital for 11 days and you couldn't smoke there. When I was released, it wasn't all that hard to continue not smoking.

I found the hardest thing to get over was having a smoke after a meal, so I got used to not lingering over dessert and coffee. At home it wasn't an issue because I could immediately start cleaning up the dishes, and the compulsion would pass fairly quickly. When we went out for dinner (or something else to eat) I tried to take a hard candy with me to substitute for the cigarette.

I also kept track of the money that I didn't spend on cigarettes. Got a small shirt-pocket sized spiral bound notebook and every day in the morning I wrote down the $$$ that I didn't spend on smokes the day before and kept a running total. Out of all the little tricks and tips about stopping smoking, this is the one that's kept me from going back to smoking. I'm getting cheaper and cheaper as I get older. :)

In another day or so you'll be passed the physical part of needing a smoke. You just have to work on the other stuff, which is a piece of cake.

Jim.

Congratulations - you are doing great :thumbsup2

It does get easier as time passes. I would strongly suggest using the patch though - I could not even make it 24 hours when I tried with no help. I have also heard there is a nasal spray out that is highly successful for some people.

I quit by using the patch. I had wanted to quit for many years and had tried 4 or 5 times with no success. It got to the point where I really wanted to quit at one point but I just couldn't bring myself (and my family) to go through the suffering again. While I was in this state of mind I began planning our 2005 trip to WDW and found that WDW had gone smoke free. I decided then and there that I was not going to waste my Disney time looking for smoking areas! I got the patch once again and that was it. That was 3 1/2 years ago.

Don't give up - you CAN do it. It is hard and painful in the beginning but well worth it for you and your family (children with parents who smoke are more like to take it up themselves). These days with all the hardships of finding a place to smoke and having to go outside in the freezing cold and rain to smoke, it is just so much easier not to smoke - it'll make your life so much easier.

Just wanted to add my support. Me and DH quit at the same time 4 years ago. It was hard but so worth it. The one thing that helped us was having someone to be accountable to... I was not going to have a cigarette knowing DH would have to find out about it. Feel free to use us as that accountability if it helps and hang tough!!!

you CAN do it.

I have never smoked but I grew up with a mom and a grandma who smoked and it really bothered me what it was doing to their health.

Good for you for quitting!
