View Full Version : A Plea/Request

I try and visit the DIS camping forum mainly to see if I can help out someone with a real question and will admit I'm not a chatter, but do enjoy threads like the pictures of the day, but when I just looked at that thread it had turned into the "Useless facts trype" chit-chat thread that I almost never look at and that's just me no offense to those that enjoy that sort of stuff. I just had to scroll thru two pages of chit-chat with no pictures. My plea is can we please keep the chit-chat in one thread and not let it take over the more informative threads.
Flame suit on since I'm sure some with take issue with what I've said, but I've never been one to hold my tongue when I don't think something is right.

No need for a flame suit. sometimes a picture/comment is made and it just goes south from there. We tend to forget what thread we're on. No harm was intended.:flower3:

Larry, I totally agree with you and I am "TheFlame!"
I have argued this point on many threads and all it has gotten me is put on the ignore list of those that can't take others opinions. If you are one of the "guys" maybe your request will be heard. I too am really tired of reading about stuff that has nothing to do with the topic or Disney for pages trying to catch up on a good question. Some posters are harmless and don't mean to start something, but others just do it on purpose or don't care. But, then again, I probably am wasting my time even typing this!

Yep, I agree. A little joking is fun, but especially things like picture of the day and picture of your site, and FAQ threads should really stay on topic.

Larry I agree, when I look at the Picture of the day i only want to see pictures, no chit chat or signatures. I will try and separate out the comments and chatter into another thread. Some of the pictures have lost there hosting and those i will delete.
The main purpose of the forum is for trip planning so we need to keep the off topic posts to a minimum and use the chit chat thread for that purpose.:thumbsup2

WOW that was a lot of work splitting that thread up since I have been a moderator on another major site :scared1: and know how time consuming and difficult it can be keeping us rowdies under control at times. On that other site I couldn't move a post w/o taking all the "linked" replies with it.
Now since I'm poor at following directions ... at least according to DW :rotfl2: ... I need to remember to disable my signature when I post in the base thread:yay:
THANK YOU,

I'll agree with the others regarding detours in threads.
What also seems to happen more frequently compared to the past is the drifting of a thread towards the party/drinks topic.

Aw come on!!! How many times can a picture of a campsite be posted, bus routes explained, how much a golf cart costs or which loops are dog loops. We have to take them off topic just to keep folks coming back or this place would get real boring real quick. I can't think of any topic concerning FW that hasn't been discussed several dozen times. It is the nature of the beast. Now where is Rog when he's needed?

Apparently....all thats required to keep a lively board(meaning one that has multiple daily posts, answers to all questions about Disney AND camping in general, within minutes...not days, like most forums)is straight facts and strict rules. If this is the way the "new" camping board is going to be, it doesnt sound like much fun. Its kinda funny....as irritating and aggravating as all the "mindless dribble" is....it sure seems to have brought in lots of new regulars in the past few months who really seem to enjoy the boards here. They come in and ask the usual questions about "best loops" or "should I get the dining plan or not" or "where are the pet loops located"...but tend to stay around because its a great sorurce of daily information and fun....which is what I thought camping was supposed to be. Id be willing to bet there are at least 40 -50 people who post here regularly, simply because the company kept here is warm and welcoming. If its just going to be the cold hard facts from now on......I have a gut feeling that the regulars(the ones who ANSWER all the questions for the newcomers)will find a board that doesnt mind some entertainment mixed in with its information. I personally LOVE the regualrs here and the way we all get along....the answers to every question is handeled withing the first page or two of very thread....how many different answers are really needed for the question "How clean are the comfort stations?"...There's a wonderful vibe on this board, its VERY alive....and I personally LOVE IT LIKE THAT, and would not have a reason to continue frequenting this little camping paradise of knowledge and friendliness if it were to change. JMHOOBY!!!! (Thanks 2goofs!!!)
Am I alone in this opinion? Are there others who agree that the direction the conversations usually take are what makes this board what it is?

Hi BDR - I agree with you. I think all the regulars on the board are very informative and always answer any questions with a great deal of thought drawing from their personal experiences. I initially found the boards while searching for information on the type of people that visit Ft. Wilderness and their camping needs, but I have stayed around because I love to read what everyone has to say. I find that while some of the opinions are differing, everyone seems to get along and have fun. I do not always answer threads, but I sign in almost daily now to see who is on and what the current topics are.
I think this board is very fun and I would not change it at all. I guess if people are having a discussion that you are not interested in, then maybe just skip that thread.:flower3:

Rog-
I couldn't agree more!! (And as ususal, very well put!) Yeah, threads sometimes tend to go a little "south" on us, but that's part of the fun!!! If folks wanted "just the facts, ma'am", they would look at the FAQ thread, find their answer, and never post a question.

I'm still pretty new here but I thought I'd chime in. I think both are correct. The photo thread should not contain all of the chatting. But I don't have a problem with the others as long as questions are answered. I usually enjoy the responses. You guys are all as crazy as I am.

You're right...I didnt mean to insinuate that their aren't several threads that should be considered OFF LIMITS, such as ANY STICKY thread, and PICTURE OF THE DAY AT THE FORT thread(...edit...I dont see any harm in a small amt of comments for the benefit of the photos...but 3 pages WAS a bit much)
Disney Campers(moderator), I think it was very nice of you to go through the trouble of seperating all the comments from the picture of the day thread instead of just deleting them.
And Larry J, I hope you dont consider my above comment as a flame directed at you....it was not a flame at all. I just feel it is VERY IMPORTANT to the livelihood of this forum that we are allowed to be what campers are....social and SUPERIOR to non-campers!!! ;)

The sepearation of the picture thread is a good thing, it must have taken a very long time to complete that, Thanks Scott.
This board like several other that I participate in, has a tendency to veer off course. I, myself have been guilty of causing it many times, its sometimes the nature of a social interaction for that to happen. LarryJ makes a very good and very timely point and I think the board will be better for it. Having been around here for a while, its easy to forget that there are new people who actually come here to learn.
Anyways, thanks for the refocus.

Thank you so much for bringing this up, I do agree, when I looked at the pic of the day thread yesterday there were 2 pages of just chit chat. I go there to see the pictures, but I didn't see the harm in a response directly to the picture, but what happened was too much.
Larry I agree, when I look at the Picture of the day i only want to see pictures, no chit chat or signatures. I will try and separate out the comments and chatter into another thread. Some of the pictures have lost there hosting and those i will delete.

I'll agree with the others regarding detours in threads.
What also seems to happen more frequently compared to the past is the drifting of a thread towards the party/drinks topic.
I also agree with this, I know there is no harm in joking around, but it does get old after a while when so many threads end up turning to beer and kungalush

But then I also agree with this too, I really enjoy reading all of the funny responses, except when it turns to the beer and kungalush, but then I just quickly scroll past all of those until I spot one that is about something else.
So I agree with both points of view in this, I think people just need to use some common sense and not let things get so out of hand or move it to the chit-chat thread

As you can see from the appearance of the "regulars that answer all the questions" they have found your thread Larry! I have found that most people on here don't seem to be bothered by the constant talk of beer and kungajuice because that is what our society has turned to so they can deal with daily life. I think that myself and a few others that don't compromise their values are getting tired of trying to "get past" and around threads that are taken over by the same people. You know, the ones that have all the answers to the questions!:thumbsup2
This is a place to have fun and join in(unless your opinion differs from the regulars and you are being ignored:rotfl2: )about all things DISNEY and to share information and opinions(all opinions.:rolleyes1 ) There is nothing wrong with having chit chat threads that having nothing to do with anything, but don't include your mindless drivel into every question that is asked.:crazy2:

on that note i'll know who to ignore in other threads. it's easy to see the ones who want to talk about getting drunk instead of disney. all roads lead to beer instead of all roads lead to nowhere...except in my opinion beer is nowhere. being social is fine, but some people seem to LOOK for a way to turn something into an AA meeting. get real people!

I have to agree w/BDR...I originally came here just to get a few questions about WDW and Fort the answered (which BTW were answered within minutes) and got caught up in all the fun. This is a community, comradely (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/comradely)and customer service. If it was just Customer Service and a map of the Fort, I don't think the customer service would be very good. I think this board has created more lovers of the Fort than it has turned away.

Well, it seems the political correctness squad is at work again. Hi, my name is Jen and I sometimes make useless comments. For that, I am now a bad person and must be made an example of, like others who have posted. Shame on me. Since I haven't been on since Thursday, I really don't know the "dribble" you are talking about, however, most of you are taking things MUCH too seriously. All the questions are asked, answered and personally, I have had three people I know say to me, who don't post but just lurk, "Wow, what a forum, you guys have so much fun." You are more than welcome to put me on your ignore list if you don't like what I have to say. Things sometimes downgrade to where they are not supposed to be, but we have two wonderful moderators that keep us degenerates in line. When most people go camping, they meet wonderful people who are kind, outgoing, and just neat to talk to. I find that same atmosphere here on the boards. I guess that might not be the case anymore. IMHO  , I think this is a lot over nothing.

:thumbsup2 Very well put--both of you! Disney Campers and I have always tried to follow that thin line of keeping things on topic as much as possible, without breaking up the comraderie and general social "feel" of the board. We want new people to get their questions answered, and at the same time, we want them to feel welcome and comfortable here.
Campers, in general, are known for being social, fun, and friendly. That's one of the main reasons we all love to camp! And, it comes across in this board. If we ran this board as strict as, for example, the Restaurants board -- people would come and get their anwers, but then leave again. Which is fine for an "informational" board like that. This is more of a "community" board, where people get to know each other and share ideas and opinions.
Disney Campers is doing a fantastic job of "cleaning up" the board -- merging the Stickies together into one thread, cleaning the chit-chat from the photo thread, etc. This will make things easier for newbies to navigate around here. Thanks DC!
So, everyone, please do whatever you can to help out, by keeping the legitimate threads on-topic. But, feel free to still be friendly and offer helpful ideas and advice where you can! And, let's try to keep the non-camping chit-chat to the "chit-chat" thread! :goodvibes (or the golf cart thread, or the snakes thread, or the recipe thread, or the kungaloosh thread.... ;) )

Rog- I think you are awesome(in a really gross and sick way:crazy2:) and I don't think you ignore me, because you seem to "get" me and always have. There are some people on here for a time thought I was disdawg or whatever and that is when the ignore thing started. I have responded on a few threads and it seems that I am being ignored by a few. That is fine, but don't argue your point and think that it is not okay for me to argue mine. I think you and I are alot alike AND VERY DIFFERENT in some very important ways:scared1:. I do have very strong beliefs and I don't compromise those even in the name of others so called "fun", but I don't want to come across as a stick in the mud either. I just don't think that talking about drinking is fun and has anything to do with camping and Disney. That is my opinion and I know that I am in a minority here. I don't fit into this little community y'all have but I do like to read and post occasionally and would like for things to be FUN but stay on topic.
That being said, you have always been very kind to my rather opinionated remarks, even though it is hard for you to admit when you are wrong.:rotfl: I don't try to flame stuff up as my name might insinuate. I just like to state my opinion, even when I wasn't asked for it!:thumbsup2

Thank you for making me want to tie you up and drag you to church and for making me laugh most every day. Not as much of a minority as you might think. I have also gotten a little bored of all the drinking banter that goes on. A little is okay but sometimes it seems that almost every thread turns into the same extended banter. I think all that some of the posters to this thread are asking is a little moderation so that everyone can have fun and also get the information they are looking for.

Am I alone in this opinion? Are there others who agree that the direction the conversations usually take are what makes this board what it is?
Thank you! I completely agree. When I first came here I just lurked, afraid to say to much. But the joking and comradary of this board is so welcoming and inviting, I have found myself looking forward to my DIS time. I feel like this is my camping club. I don't need Good Sam, I have the DIS campers. With our Grand Gatherings(which someday I will be able to attend) and other get togethers. I'm sorry that a little comment I made(that actually was about a photo) caused such an uproar. I know when I am talking to my friends face to face I don't just stay quiet unless I have something USEFUL to say, no, I am friendly and make conversation. I thought that is what discussion meant, hence Discussion Boards. I agree that it can go a little overboard, but that is when Rhonda reminds us, just like a good mother, to behave and we get right back on track. Again, I apologize for making a comment on a photo in the photo thread. I finally get up the courage to make a wise comment and look what happens.
And I don't want anyone to think that I am "flaming" anyone or thing. And KUDOS to the moderators, I know is it a hard and sometimes thankless job. I guess this whole hulabaloo just surprises me. I would think that a little comment of "Hey get back on track" would have sufficed. I am also a member at another Disney site that I have pretty much stopped going to, 1. Because this one(in my opinion) is better. Why? Because it is fun, and happy. The other one, you ask a question, you get your answer(or are made to feel stupid for asking) and thats it. No conversation, no friendliness. I would hate to see this become a list of threads with the one word answers.

LarryJ-I am in no means addressing this to you. I enjoy your posts, and have gotten some good ideas from you. I respect everyone's opinions. I am just sorry that my simple comment has started a racus through out the board.
Anyway, just my 2 cents. I will now go back to minding my business and making signs.

John, why should you care? I certainly don't care who has me on ignore. I don't and the people you care about don't, so don't sweat it.

I was saying that because most of my posts are about beer, kungaloosh and my website, I just figured that I have alienated my share of disers along the way. LOL
Honestly, if this was just a question and answer board, I would have got my questions answered when I started and not come back. The "regulars" as they are called are what gives this place its flavor and appeal. If they weren't around, this place would be boring.
Larry, this is not your fault, your comment about the photo threads, and FAQ's was right on the money, but others complaining about "regulars" and I hope I am considered one of them, getting off topic, is a little overboard. Like someone else said, if you don't like it, skip it. If we can't talk about it, then we are the ones being discriminated against.

I've been on ignore lists before like on Yahoo and I've been on ignore in person too. Last time I checked she still had me on ignore. If she had her way I'd be on dead lol.:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Well, I think I'm a regular...or maybe more an "irregular"..depending on who you ask! I don't drink beer (I can hear the gasps now:scared1: ) and I don't know what kungaloosh tastes like..so the jury is still out on that.
That being said, I've never felt offended or put off by the drinking references. If I'm not interested, it isn't that hard to scroll past them. I do agree that the chit-chat should remain in the approriately named thread. Only I would invite those who don't post as frequently to come and chat also. I very much enjoy looking at the photos and enjoy some commentary regarding them..although pages without photos..sort of defeats the purpose of the photo thread.
I think that most questions posed by new commers to the board are answered in a friendly and welcoming manner. Some people even choose to stick around, because they don't just get a quick answer..they get an OPINION. They may want to know what a good loop is..but they won't just get a generic Disney approved answer. They will get an answer from someone who has stayed in that loop with three kids and a grandma. They are going to wind up knowing exactly how many steps to the comfort station it is, and they may even find photos of that site from all angels. You want to know what the bathrooms are like?....We're gonna have someone that has pictures of the bathroom.(okay..that's wierd :rolleyes2 .but we have 'em anyway) It's what makes this camping forum unique. We can have opinions. We don't all agree..and that's okay too. How boring would it be if we did? When someone doesn't know something..we have quite a few area residents who make it there business to go to FW:drive: and find out. We are like a real campground. People from various walks of life, all bringing something different to the table. We all have an interest in camping and specifically in FW. We have become virtual friends, and some of us have even been lucky enough to meet in person. We support one another in times of need, and rejoice in one anothers triumphs. We've even offended one another, but because we are more than an ordinary camping board, and those offended posses more grace than most..they also forgive. :wizard: Some of us drink beer..and some of us don't.
If someone is looking for a quick answer...there are plenty of camping boards around where they can find them. Here you will find more. If you stick around on this board you are likely to find more than generic answers to ordinary questions.... you might even find something you weren't lookng for. Friends. :grouphug: (with opinions!)

Geez guys...I go camping for one weekend and miss all the fun !! There are too many good replies to quote them all. You know who you are and I totally agree...we are FAA-MI-LYY...I got all my sisters and me :dance3:
I love this board and wouldn't change a think (except maybe more pictures less comments on the P.O.T.D thread) ;)
For the record....
1- # of people I have on ignore= 0
2- # of drinks I've had this weekend= 0
3- # of times I've been offended here by fellow "regulars" = 0

I think this thread has run it's course. And, since it's not really a Fort Wilderness planning thread, I'm going to lock it up.
Happy Camping everyone!! :goodvibes
