1st let me say, we will usually go to dw about once a year maybe 2 times a year if we get that itch again. my dh says when you go to dw it makes you feel comfortable and welcome and I believe the same feeling is for me too :goodvibes

We are starting the process found a dvc we liked okw :goodvibes paper work just went in the other day now waiting for disney to approve :scared:

my kids know whats going on with the dvc and they are happy but family /friends probably think we are weird because of our love of disney and now that we are considering doing a dvc
well lets say in their minds they probably think we are nuts. My husband doesn't really tell eveyone about dw vacations anymore because they say "oh your going back there again?"

with this new dvc i am going to get (hopefully) we are going to do a yearly trip and probably save points up to go other places as well so for us it not all disney.

Do you have the same problems with friends/family that don't understand the love for disney??
do your friends/family think its strange that you go to dw too many times??

This is a pretty common complaint of DVC'ers. DW & I really don't care what others think concerning our DVC or vacation plans. We do it for ourselves because we are indulging our desires.

We don't care either, if folks are tired of hearing about WDW, just tell me or act disinterested and I'll stop.

It's basically like when folks tell me about their love of camping, snow skiing, or whatever. I listen, but don't get it.

So.....

I come here :disrocks: to talk Disney with my fellow Disneyholics!!!!:mickeyjum :hmghost: :simba: :figment: :stitch: :goofy: :dumbo: :ccat: :tigger:

We told family and friends when we purchased our first OKW in 1993. LAst year we purchased a BWV contract, only told a few friends, most family members view it as a waste of money. Until they decided to take a a trip and asked several times about the type of accomodations we stay in. I told them but didn't offer to give them points.

We told our family but really didn't care what they thought. We took my mother in law 1 time w/DVC she understood the difference between DVC and non DVC.

My parents know, as they were on the trip with us when we bought. Plus, I didin't mind telling them since my father has bought a few motor homes and a vacation home at the spur of the moment in the past.

My mother and father in law, on the other hand, is another story. They would think we were crazy, so we haven't told them yet. Someday, I suppose.

The friends that I told all shook their head. I think the head shaking had more to do with the fact that DVC is a timeshare, rather than the fact that it was down in Disney. Timeshare is viewed as a scam by many who don't have one.

I will never know why you can tell someone you bought a $75,000 car or a $1,000,000 home down at the beach and they will say, "Great news! Congratulations!" but they will give you that "What the heck were you thinking?" look when you tell them that you spent $18,000 on DVC.

Yes and no. Told some but not everyone. Like pp's, we don't really care what they think - it just hasn't come up with many of them. We listen to their stories about their campers, boats, timeshares, cabins, etc - but have no interest in the same stuff they do, so after a couple of bored expressions, the stories tend to stop. We've found it easier just not to reciprocate in the first place and not say anything to those that we already know don't get Disney in the first place.

We didn't tell too many people, although the few that did know were the first to ask if they can USE it...not rent it, not pay us anything to stay there...just USE it...

AS IF there'd be any points available to use anyway:lmao:

Everyone else just makes fun of me for going 3x a year....I get the usual "You DO know there are other places to vacation, right?"...

We were with friends at CBR last May when we bought and have told a few friends who like or love Disney since ... no real congrats from anyone, even our fellow disney lovers. Who knows why... parents and inlaws don't know at this point ... they all thought we were weird to honeymoon at AKL in 2004 ... my DH has a good attitude re who cares what they think ... it's our life and we are the ones who have to live it ... it gets to me occasionally, but try to let it slide or just not comment when someone says something snide. I do know it is right for us and that disney vacations bring a special smile to each of us - we have traveled other places as well and always return to wdw. It's always nice to come home! :)

Also - great job DisDayDreamer re quitting smoking! :thumbsup2 You rock ... hang in there! It's hard but can be done ...

DH's family knows, his aunt is also a member. In my family only a few know. In fact my step-mom has told me not to tell my dad. My dad would yell at me and tell me how stupid I was for buying a time share. I love my dad, he just wouldn't get it. I have some aunts that would offer their opinions also. I just don't want to hear it. My money my business.

Only told our kids. I have seen a few of my friends just invite theirselves on other people vacation once they find out its a time share :confused3 I may tell at a later date but for now its a family secret ;)

We did tell family, and most were very happy for us as they realize we have gone almost yearly for a very long time. We are now able to bring my parents and brother and last week even brought my sister, husband and their two boys. 11 all total, would have never been able to do this without DVC. AS for people at work and extended family, I don't get their camping obsession or their desire to snowmobile in the freezing cold, so I don't care if they get our WDW obsession:lmao:

My Hubby Dude and I just bought at SSR. We're taking out first trip there in Nov/Dec. Everyone knows we're going to Disney then but only a few of my closest friends know we purchased DVC. A few of my very good girlfriends are also Disney lovers and they're all extremely excited for me. Two of them want to purchase DVC but aren't in a position to do so right now. I'm sure I'll eventually tell my family that we own DVC but right now I don't even think they know what it is.

Totally agree, Ron!! I've always puzzled over the people who think about hiding it because of what others might say. Who the heck gives someone else the right to have an opinion that matters over what you do??? If anyone would be so rude as to tell me my dvc decision was a mistake....well that is a person I can live without!

Bottom line - we all make decisions on what we buy and don't buy. To suggest that someone else's decision is "nuts" is totally rude and unacceptable. I think the people I know somehow realize they don't need to comment on what I do because they know I'm secure enough to know their opinion doesn't matter.

Being from Florida, most people got it OK, although I certainly get teased about it.

That doesn't stop anyone from wanting to go with us though, and really enjoying it!

In fact, that's the biggest way to hush the naysayers. Just take them...once.

We told family back when we bought in 2000. They just don't get Disney. Treated the in-laws to a week at WDW in a 2 bedroom and they just complained the whole time. Bought an add-on at Vero to let them use it since they seem to like beach vacations better (their idea of a great vacation is a week at Cocoa Beach). They didn't appreciate it and almost made us lose points the last time we booked for them. So we are selling our Vero contract and will put that money aside to use when they start selling Hawaii. We still have our main BWV contract and will use it for yearly visits to WDW and the DVC Member Cruise.

We got a few glances of "stretching your budget a bit, aren't we" from family. Also have some family that just thinks it's weird. Have a few friends that just don't "get it" but like someone else said, this is not for them-it's for us and we love it!
Also to mention. Weird comments and/or stares automatically declares you a non participant in any upcoming trips we take!:rotfl2:

My family and close friends I told during the whole purchasing procedure. They know me and know my love for the world so they were all happy for me. Some did think it was a bit pricy. But I explained to them about the accomodations and flexibilty and the vacation alternatives and the fact that it DISNEYWORLD:cloud9: So they all thought it made sense for me. My family was completely sold when we went this past June when we put them up in a couple of 2 bdrm suites. I heard alot of "Wows!"

Now I tell people usually in the course of helping them w/trip planning or in respone to, "You're going there again?" Well of course, silly, we have the vacation club.:thumbsup2

My side of the family all knows and most of our friends...on DH's side his Mom knows I think...but we did not share it with his Dad. One day we'll tell him. Maybe. They are under the impression that we have money that we really DON'T have. It's none of their business in our opinion. We just don't need them making assumptions about our finances in their own twisted up little minds. :rolleyes1

We just bought in January at AKV after spending 9 nights at SSR with friends on their points. When we purchased...both my husbands family and my family were really excited for us. Especially once we explained that being a family of 5 we would need to book two rooms everywhere else, double beds etc. The best part was telling them they could come with us. This December my kids are going to have a blast at Disney with my mom and my husbands parents altogether and not crammed. Can hardly wait.:yay:

Told some friends about DVC...

Told Family almost immediately...I was busting at
the sides! It, still to this day, and I wonder how many
more are like me, amazes me that I own a piece
of the Mouse!

I still find people who own timeshares @ other resorts
that when I mention I bought into WDW...they look
at me in disbelief..."What do you mean, you own @
WDW?" I just smile back. To think I bought @ SSR
because of a kiosk I came across while staying @
the Polynesian in "04...if it weren't for that CM
calling me over..."God bless her!":dance3:

I'm amazed to find other neighbors and friends who own timeshares, once you mention DVC it all comes out. :lmao: We have 2 Westgate owners on our small cul-de-sac. Since we also have a non-dvc unit we talk about II and their competitors and exchanging. Another friend has an ongoing RCI search for Europe that I'll be interested to see if she gets(I think it's 09 and 10 summer).

I don't bring it up much, as most people have no clue or the one that thought she was a DVC member because she had a Disney Visa card.

Though it is funny that our elementary school has 3 DVC families(ourselves, Rock n' Robin and another family who bought on DCL the other year).

thanks everyone for all your thoughts on this subject from what i have read we aren't alone with people in our lives not understanding a dvc. However we are very excited about this dvc that we just signed for the other day and if I am happy and my family that's all that matters :cool1:

Hey aDVCguy we are neighbors, I am from East Islip :goodvibes

Howdy neighbor!
East Islip..right around the corner...so to speak!

Speaking of around the corner...I have a neighbor
that's no more than 70 yards from me...owns @ OKW
and Boardwalk...a veteran DVCer who helped me out
during the purchase phase.
You're going to find qiute a few DVCers around our neck
of the woods....I was pleasantly surprised!:cool1:

Well, I generally don't say much but then it usually took me until the 5th month or so to "confess" to my pregnancies! DH is usually the one who opens his mouth...he has told EVERYONE and preaches DVC regularly to people at work, and has "recruited" a few to talk to our guide. He has a sister and brother in law who are DVC owners and they were pretty quiet about it. Our kids know, of course, but I haven't told them about our add on yet...it won't really matter to them cuz they don't keep track of the points anyway...they just know we're headed for another big family trip in a couple of years. My brother bought years ago, I thought at the time it wasn't a good deal. In 2004 I decided to check out the DVC system and now own 1,410 points. It's a fever you can't get medicine for (thank god).

OK Starr, for some reason the "Disney Visa" thing cracked me up big time. Could be because my DSIL said the same thing last night when I told her and DBIL that we were buying DVC (did it today by the way) She thinks we're nuts for paying $20K for something she gets for free:rotfl2:

ps. my wife got the brains in the family, and the looks thank God.

We haven't told anyone and purchased our first points in Dec 06. We hear enough "Going Again" that we even took one trip for a long weekend without telling any family.

My parents even have timeshare somewhere else, but they made comments once, when we had first looked into it in 2004, that it was so overpriced that we haven't said a word.

in the beginning i told a family member and they tried to stop me from being able to buy and said i would just loose my money. then i told another family member who loves disney as much as i do and the reaction was favorable. i have not found a single friend who understands. i think they got old faster than i did. my daughter and grandchildren love disney and since we always went together they really appreciate the difference between regular resort rooms and dvc. the extra room makes a world of difference.

it is strange that dvc gives you a feeling of belonging to something as grand as disney. you do have ownership but you are also recognized as someone who belongs and cares about the entire disney wellbeing.:goodvibes

and another really big point is that it really saves money on your vacation.;)

It took me a while to look into and understand DVC. More importantly to see if it would work for me and my family. There wer some nay say'ers but didn't have to justify my purchase to anyone but myself. I don't sit there and advertise that I have a Disney timeshare but we do frequently take family members and friends to enjoy it with us. So far, no one has ever said, Oh no, we can't go with you because we don't believe in timeshares. By the same token , even though they've enjoyed it tremendously, not a single sole that I have taken with me has ever bought into DVC. I love Disney, I love to vacation and it works for me!

I purchasesd okw in 1993 and boardwalk in 2003 and will buy the contemporary whenever it opens. I have three kids so three resorts.lol Actually most people I have told have never said anything one way or the other. Close friends have traveled with us for years and have gone to disney and disney cruises etc but have never purchased. The choose to pay cash for the hotel or vacation club room. Every once in a while (usually when I have a hard time getting a reservation I wonder why I purchased) but that is only a momentary thought. Disney is truly a magical place and I relax from the hectic schedules when I am there. I have always left disney wishing I could have stayed longer and wishing I could go right back. Yes some friends don;t like going to disney since they say the lines are too long etc. for me everyone seems to have a special place they like to go. For me it is Disney. I do travel to other parts of the country but I try to get to disney at least once a year. So if friends indicate they don;t like hearing about fun and relaxing times but I agree with the statements above if my friend said I was nuts I am not sure I need a friend like that in my life.

AMEN! We just got off the 7-night Disney Magic cruise and although we also have Marriott's Vacation Club (which we like very much), we also bought into Disney's. I'm not sure we would have done it otherwise (i.e. just talking to the folks that stand at the parks), but the presentation they gave on the ship was very informative and after talking to my husband, we agreed it was the right thing to do because we are going to Disney (alot) anyway. In fact, I had two separate trips booked this fall that I cancelled and transferred to using my DVC points. I already told my DH that I'm not planning on telling the family about it. They don't need to know. They know we have the Marriott Vacation Club (where our home resort also happens to be in Orlando) so I'll let them just think what they want as we have 3 more trips planned for this year.
