You forgot
-- terrible traffic
-- rampant growth, urban sprawl and strip malls
:rotfl:

That's part of the reason why I now live the north part of the state, and not Orlando, where I grew up.

Good reasons! :thumbsup2

I live in NJ and we have a family of lizards that live on/in my side door steps:scared1: They haven't made it into my house yet - good thing my dog would eat it!!!

My neighbor gets them and snakes in her house:scared1: :scared1: :scared1:

We are also "known" for our flying bugs:sad2:

I'd love to work in Disney but for the reasons you mentioned - especially the heat! - I doubt highly it would ever happen.

TOP TEN REASON I WOULD MOVE TO ORLANDO

10. No Chance of a White Christmas
9. Lizards....they are so cute!
8. It's the beginning of May here in Ohio and it's 45 degrees right now
7. Beautiful flowers all the time (changing leaves are nice, but flowers in Feburary are better)
6. The "midges" invasions we get here off Lake Erie (worse than love bugs)
5. Palm trees
4. NO BLIZZARDS
3. NO ICY ROADS
2. DISNEY WORLD
1. DISNEY WORLD

I can't argue the freaking heat humidity thing though, it's the # 1 thing keeping
me from actually and really moving to Orlando. The lilac thing is another issue.
I LOVE my two huge lilac bushes, but eh, they only last a few weeks anyway,
I'd get over it for the palm trees.

#1 reason why I WOULD move to Orlando - Never having to shovel 3 feet of snow off my car ever again!

I'm halfway between NY & FL, and it's so crazy hot/humid here in the summer-- but I won't ever complain about not having to shovel snow (I grew up in NY-- I know what that is like) But I like being close enough for a 10 hr. drive to the World!!
But if I was 20 again, I might just have to move to Orlando & work for Disney, and deal with the FL heat!

Us too!! We are dying to move to Florida. We are looking at the Melbourne area though not Orlando. We have not found the perfect hospital yet. The pay in Florida is really low. Our main reason for not moving there yet.

I must admit, I would love to see more than the 1" of snow I saw 16 yrs ago...but I'd just like to visit then leave. I agree that the pay is very low in FL, especially compared to the cost of living! I was offered a job transfer to Hernando County a couple of months ago (north of Tampa,) but had to turn it down. :sad2: Initially, I thought it looked like a substantial pay raise, but after going down and finding out about the cost of living, it was the equivalent to a 7% pay cut! Now that I think about it, someone could use that as another reason not to move!

10. Too Freaking Hot and Humid Let's talk in February
9. No Seasons But the beach is an hour away...east or west
8. It's the Beginning of May and its 90 degrees out. But on January 1st it was 70 degrees
7. Love Bugs Yeah ..well...no place is perfect.
6. Hurricanes Snowstorms
5. No leaves changing colors They do actually. It's MUCH more subtle
4. No Lilacs We have Crape Myrtles, Palm Trees and Gardenias in our yard.
3. Huge bugs that fly Got those everywhere. Junebugs anyone?
2. Lizards (they are cute when I'm on vacation, but not when they would get in my house) They eat the other bugs and are harmless.
1.No chance of a White Christmas. I'll have to think about that when I sit in the audience for the Christmas Eve Candlelight Processional after dinner in Epcot wearing shorts....or walk through Celebration watching the carolers.....or sit in the lobby of the GF having gingerbread.

All of the reasons that Kevin has disputed are the reasons I WANT to move to Florida..

DH already knows my intention of moving.. its just not feasible right now because then I would have to move my children away from their father, but oh when they get older :thumbsup2 .. I figure in the next 8-10 yrs.. as youngest is almost 11 right now..

I don't know. My 5 year old nephew doesn't understand that Disney World is in Florida, or even Orlando. He totally seperates them and thinks they are completely different things. When we went, after we left WDW, he said "Are we back in Florida now?" and I think that's how I'd look at it. Disney would still be magical, unto itself, just ALOT closer.

I so agree with Kevin. I did the winter thing and don't miss it at all. I love when friends call and they are in the midst of a snow storm. I am sitting here in shorts and flip flops with the doors and windows open.

It used to get very hot and humid in PA. At least in Orlando I have air conditioning.

I love waking up and deciding what beach I want to go to and it is only an one hour in each direction.

Yes we do have seasons.

The bugs are a small price to pay for living in paradise. I wouldn't move back North if you paid me large sums of money.

I find traffic and the roads much better here than in PA.

To be honest im glad i live in the UK-
1) The scarriest bugs we have are wasps and they aren't big this year due to the late cold snap :cool1: (It is lovely weather atm but only a month ago it was snowing!)
2) No Hurricanes (except a few baby ones which really just high winds where a chimney pot falls over and a cat gets scared)
3) No tornados
4) No excessive heat, ok it can get blooming hot sometimes, but compaired to Las Vegas last summer i count my blessings!
5) No excessive cold, yes it rains a lot but you ever get frost bite!
6) Autumn (none of this fall buisness, its autumn to us)
7) Only one change on the train to Disneyland Paris (from where i live, but still its great!)
8) You get to fly to get to WDW (i know this one sounds crazy, but it really does give you 7 hours to chill out and get excitied about the holiday. It then feels like a real holiday when you get there)
9) A chance of a white christmas, never happens but there is always a chance. This year we had a white Easter, so its getting closer :rotfl:
10) I can say the words 'blooming' and 'cherrio' etc. and Americans just think its cute! :cutie:

The only problem is-
Its too far from home :sad1: i miss WDW!!!!

We're from NY and are moving to FL as soon as humanly possible. You don't have to shovel a foot of heat and humidity out of the driveway at 5:00am. You don't have to scrape heat and humidity off of your windshield. As far as seasons changing, we can visit NY in the fall or winter for a week or so. And really, how often do you actually get a "white" Christmas. Florida here we come! :thumbsup2

Living in Texas I already have to deal with all of that but I'm 15 long hours away from WDW. We might as well move to Florida.

Kevin and Walt4me have it right on the button. That is exactly WHY we are trying to move to Orlando (or at least the Orlando area...I'd really rather be a town or two away...)

We have the house virtually ready to put on the market, talked to a realtor yesterday...and they said we'd be crazy to put it on the market in this economy...especially if we don't have to.

:sad2: You have no idea how depressing this is. But we WILL be moving there soon...it just doesn't make sense to throw money out the window.

And, by the way... I'd shovel humidity and rain any day over the amount of snow we got this year...

Okay, what were all missing is this....6 months up north and 6 months down south. Thats the perfect mix! or maybe 5/7 or 4/8 ;-) I just need to find a job that allows me to do this somehow, or wait another 18 years until I can retire.

Amen!

We would love to move to Florida, but we're stuck here in Indiana for a few more years, at least. We have to wait out our adoption. Once that's done, then we'll get serious!

Hopefully by that time, the housing market will be better and we'll be able to sell our house!

I agree with Kevin, I don't think I would ever be happy anywhere else other than FL!! I love that you can wear flip flops year round and never have to worry about a winter wardrobe.

Yes, it is 90 degrees in May but it has been wonderful from Oct-April so we can't complain!

And... I'm in Miami where we are always 5-10 degrees warmer than Orlando and I still would not move. Ok, maybe to Tampa but that's as far as I go.

Given the the right circumstances and opportunity I'd be there in a heartbeat. We love the theme parks so much we can overlook anything negative the Florida climate offers.

I should add it does snow during the MVMCP parade, and I've even seen a burst of snow during our walk through the Osborne Spectacle of Dancing Lights.

I'm with Kevin 100%. Florida is definitely in our future. A little more difficult being Canadians. It's just WAY too far for us to paddle in a raft.;)
It's probably a 10 yr plan or more for us but it will happen. Maybe sooner if Werner Tech would give a poor unfortunate soul a work visa.:thumbsup2
As far as white Christmas' go. I spent the Christmas of 2004 in WDW and I can with all honestly say it wouldn't bother me one iota if I ever saw snow again....besides I have an HD plasma big screen if I really feel the need for the white stuff.

I have to exist in Virgina for now and I'll make the best of it, after all it is a beautiful state that is also full of history but as soon as the opportunity arises, I'm Florida bound!

Everything the O.P. stated as reasons not to move to Florida are the very reasons I want to go! Of course if everyone felt this way, there would be no where left in Florida to move to.

I can't wait until the day comes that I'm in Florida and NOT a touist:)

I lived in Bermuda for 4 years and whenever we would come back to Canada to visit people would always say don't you miss the snow, the seasons, leaves changing colours, etc.....

NO!

I was golfing Christmas Day, and got to "work" with dolphins the rest of the year. It was amazing how often people came to visit us when the wonders of snow, season and changing leaves were happening in Canada.

I did have to put up with the flying cockroaches...and once a Bermuda tree frog got into the house. These are very tiny, moist frog that only can survive in high humidity. Our house was airconditioned so the frog did not last long in the house and dried up very quickly(less that 4 hours).....my mother in law found the frog skeleton the first 15 minutes she was in the house. I had cleaned the place for days to make sure it was spotless and then she finds a frog skeleton....:scared1: :scared1:

I spent the rest of her visiting teaching her about the Bermuda Tree frog and it's special biology.:lmao:

Top 10 reasons why I AM moving to Orlando in about a month(30 mins west):

1. I just graduated college and am taking a job there
2. My husband is also being offered a job in the area
3. I currently live near Chicago, love Chicago, hate snow
4. I hate the cold.
5. I grew up near the ocean, and long to be within driving distance again.
6. I love the little lizards, in fact I own a leopard gecko myself.
7. The Magic Kingdom front gate will be approx. 18 miles from my door.
8. Palm Trees
9. Living somewhere where people actually want to take a vacation.
10. Green grass for more than 3 months
and there are more...
11. I will live where I work, I will be working at a college prep academy (boarding school) as a house parent and will have an apartment on campus. So traffic won't be an issue.
12. My husband will be working as the youth pastor at a church 1 block from where we will live, so again traffic not an issue.

I'm sure I could go on and on.... I'll get back to you after we move there :)

Everyone always talks about how bad the traffic and crime is in the Orlando area... there is one site that I went to looking for information about people moving to the Orlando area and this was all anyone can say. But that is any city. Here in chicago a few weekends ago there were 38 separate recorded shootings in the 48 hours of the weekend, and the next weekend they talked about how much better it had gotten because there were only like 20 something.
As far as traffic, has anyone ever tried weaving their way through the Dan Ryan at 9am with the constant construction? lol PLUS... I will be living where I work, and my husband will work a block from there...

4. No Lilacs
Kim

Oh and I am allergic to Lilacs and break out in hives from them, so that for sure is no problem lol

I am on the side of the poster that said I'd be there in a heart beat if I could. :)

Biggest thing holding me back is kids and family. Don't want to move kids away from family right now, or pull them out of school and away from friends.

Now, if someone has any inside info in Disney IT jobs up here in PA, that could eventually become a Disney IT job in the Orlando area, I'm all ears! :)

10) I can say the words 'blooming' and 'cherrio' etc. and Americans just think its cute! :cutie:

:lmao: When Floridians say 'blooming' or 'cherrio' we mean flowers or cereal and it doesn't sound as cute with a southern accent. ;)

I've lived in FL basically my entire life and I can't imagine living anywhere else. Granted when we are boarding up the house for a hurricane or dealling with no electricity I cuss the state and briefly (very briefly) think about moving. I live in NW Florida so we do get some pretty cold weather and thankfully no snow and I like being able to take the kids Trick-or-Treating while wearing shorts. :)

Yep, I gotta say I love my flip flops, and have a huge collection ! We normally leave the shorts and t shirts in the dressers year round and only have one drawer or warm clothes! I think we may have turned our heat on 4-5 times this winter.

I live in a small town, we get pizza every Friday from the shop on main street, we have the cutest all-American parades for Halloween and Christmas, and we have tons of great historical houses and buildings! It's slow here but we also are 45 min from Tampa, Orlando, and an hour from the west coast! Can't beat having the best of both worlds :thumbsup2

Oh yea, and you also can't beat heading to EPCOT on a whim for Illuminations!

I can't wait until the day comes that I'm in Florida and NOT a touist:)I moved from Virginia too...got tired of paying all the taxes!

I think I could live in Florida, or Orlando. The last time was great, good people, good food, loved the weather. The only drawback was wildfire season. I just DONT want to work for Disney again. It really was too much of a buzz kill. I dreamed and dreamed of working there since I was little. And when I did it was a reality, which I admit, I wasn't prepared for.

I would love to be within a distance to visit FREQUENTLY, just don't want to punch the clock for the Mouse.

And Kevin, seriously, do you need to make me pea green with envy all the time??? ;)

I have always wanted to live in Florida, it does not have to be Orlando but close that is for sure. We have actually been tossing the idea back and forth and we may move there in a couple of years.

Sooooooooooooo true. Except, in my case, Cleveland bites! I'm still having flashbacks on having to sleep at work because of our Feburary 2008 blizzard and it was doubly sucky because I had just got back from 85 and gorgeous in Orlando the week before!

Here are a few more-
1. never having to scrape an inch of ice off my windshield
2. not having to wait until end of may to put our gloves away
3. no income taxes (NYS sucks!)
4. low property taxes- (at least north of orlando where we are looking)
5. So you have to stay in air conditioning in summer- beats staying in during the winter and looking out to snow, ice, clouds.
6. having only one wardrobe you do not have to rotate.
7. no spring yard cleanup :woohoo:
8. leaving our pool open all year- no closing and opening!
9. ooh- having the pool be warmer than 80 deg in the middle of July!

I could go on and on! But I guess that is why we plan to move there, as is our closest friend. We are on the 5 year plan, need to get our middle schoolers graduated here then we are out of here!
And I can tell you the thought of 5 more winters nauseates me!!

Everytime I go to Disney World I entertain thoughts about how nice it would be to live down there, and work at Disney.

Then I go to visit my family about an hour south of Disney for a week or so, and am antsy to leave by the end of the week. I just find it to be such a very different mind set down there, and it's not quite "me." I don't know if that makes much sense. That being said, I find it to be less true now that my family is in central Florida, than when they lived near Miami. I don't think I'd ever be happy living in southern Florida, but central Florida would be a possiblity.

My top reasons for not moving to Florida would be:
1) Autumn, spring, and the change of seasons. Fall is my favorite time of year. I love the changing leaves, and the nip in the air. Spring too, when all the leaves start to bloom.

2) No possibility of a white Christmas. It happens seldomly, but still I like having that chance. I at least want it to feel cold for Christmas. My family in Florida still says this is what they miss most.

3) Can't run to NYC for the day. If there is anyplace I love as much as Disney, it's NYC. I love to just hop on the train, and spend the day wandering around Central Park, visiting the museums, or seeing a show. A year ago, I finally got a job working in the city, and adore it even more. I'd miss it far too much.

4) Yankee baseball. I'm a huge fan with a partial season ticket plan. I can't imagine only being able to watch them on tv or for spring training.

Ultimately what I'd love to do some day is live up here in CT April - December, and then spend the worst of the winter months in Florida. I just need to find the job that will let me do that.:)

its funny how so many people I talk to here in New England say that they would love to move to Florida but they could not stand the heat of the summer - yet they manage to suffer through the barren wasteland that is winter/spring up here (November - March).
We New Englanders endure month after month of dismal weather; here it is almost mid May and we've only had 10 or 15 or so pleasant spring days.

I would move to Florida in a second and "suffer "through the oppressive summer heat - if only my better half would go along with me.

Someday, I think we will eventually move to the sunshine state and never have to deal with the fickle New England weather. I can't wait to wear shorts in February and forget what a snow plow looks like

Until then, I really, really do treasure my trips to FLA !:)

I'm right there with ya!! As soon as my kids are old enough, I'm outta here!! I have a few more than 10 years, though. My youngest is 6 this year. It might night be in Florida, but it will be VERY close!

I tell DS all the time he better pick a college in the south, cause I'm moving wherever he's going. (Yeah, he's not liking that idea too much! :) But I tell him "Oh, you'll love it when it comes time to needing laundry done or wanting a home cooked meal!")

I totally agree with everything here! I have given my hubby 2 years to move to florida. for these reasons. These are my personal top 10 why I want to move to Florida from Michigan:

1. Disney World
2. No Snow or cold winter weather
3. Won't have to wear socks again!
4. Close to the Ocean
5. Disney World
6. No Snow or Cold winter weather
7. Won't have to wear socks again!
8. Palm Tree's in my front yard
9. Disney World
10. Disney World

Ya know, there are always pros and cons about every place. Why not focus on the pros! There are weather problems everywhere, I would rather take the air conditioning instead of the heater. Bugs - we have nasty mosquitos in Michigan. No shoveling snow. I stay in all winter and am outside all summer, I imagine it would be just a bit of the opposite if I lived in FL. In most of the Hot summer months and outside most of the winter. I think that winter in FL is a lot shorter than the winter in MI (it lasts 6 months in MI!). If I can move to closer to my "happy place" (wdw of course) than sign me up!:cool2:

Count your blessings.

I hate the stuff. It didn't used to bother me, now the words "lake effect"
strike fear in my heart.

We moved from north of Detroit, MI to near Hilton Head, SC. I ended up leaving MI earlier than planned with my boys due to a *huge* storm at the end of Jan. Good thing I left when I did-it snowed for like 2 weeks straight after that! :lmao: I can't say that I miss it really at all. There's always air conditioning to relax in for a few minutes!

I would love to live closer to Disney but then I would have to work there to get some kind of deal or we'd be broke from going so often!

I love Cleveland, but I've been here long enough. When the kids are all in college and the parents are dead, I'm outta here. DH doesn't want to move...but in a few years I'm pushing Florida and I'm pushing it hard!

I don't want to move to Orlando. I thought I did at one time but I would miss:

Fires in the fireplace and drinking hot cider or hot chocolate
The red, yellow, orange colored leaves in the fall
A beautiful snow scene out my back door when I have no place that I have to be
Break from yard work and mowing
Crisp sunny day in the fall when you need a light jacket
That thrill from when you first set foot in WDW
A magical vacation destination

I would just like to move closer to a decent airport so I can get flights easier to WDW. Then I would visit 3-4 times a year. Yeah, that'd be good.

I agree DisneyKevin. My family and I ARE moving to the Orlando area next spring. We cant wait. For those of you who do live in the Orlando area, any suggestions on where to move to. We will have a son starting High school the fall we move. We were thinking somewhere in Seminole County.

Us too!! We are dying to move to Florida. We are looking at the Melbourne area though not Orlando. We have not found the perfect hospital yet. The pay in Florida is really low. Our main reason for not moving there yet.
that's exactly why my family couldn't stay in Florida. My Dad is an LPN and not only did the pay stink but the benefits were non-existant. Being 1 1/2 hours from the World and 15 min from the beach was awesome though!

That's exactly what I'm doing! :) Everyone thinks I'm crazy to leave home and move so far away. Hopefully it'll be worth it!

I'm a life-long Floridian living in Colorado right now...and I walked through a foot of snow for the very first time the other day. Two months ago, I saw snow flurries for the first time in Ukraine. Whoever said ignorance was bliss.....LIED!! I don't know how to handle this mysterious white substance you Northerners call snow.

Call me crazy, but I miss the beach.

But heck, I'm in the middle of the mountains, so I can't complain.

Still, I would be in my shorts right now if I were home.

And be hot and sweaty at the same time.

Top 10 reason not to move to Orlando from a California perspective

10. Do not know how to spell humidity but still have nice summers
9. No Love Bugs or lizards
8. No Hurricanes – (OK so we have earthquakes, but there is no notice they just happen. You do not see them coming miles away on the local news.)
7. Everyone I know that moved to Florida from California has moved back
6. You can have a White Christmas it is just 3 hours away in Lake Tahoe. Nice to visit do not want to shovel snow in order to go to work. (We also get to wear shorts at Christmas.)
5. We have 2 seasons – wearing shorts and wearing pants. No heavy sweaters, no winter parkas
4. Santa Cruz and the ocean are just minutes away
3. The diversity of people and cultures
2. San Francisco, Anaheim and Laguna Beach
1. Disneyland, and DCA are just a 30 minute flight away on Southwest

As a former Floridian and Clevelander, you had me laughing here! I live in NC right now but we are due south ASAP!

Break from yard work and mowing I'd say that running the snowblower at least once a day counts as yard work. Not to mention banging away at the ice with a hoe and shoveling up the stuff the blower didn't get. :faint:

Heck, a walk out to get the mail is a major project in the winter.

What is that sound??? Oh, it's Orlando calling my name. "Beeeanie...Beeeanie...come...come here to live...I'm waiting!"

Even now, in the summertime, I see this thread bumped and still want to move south because I hate winter. And so long as I'm moving south, why not Orlando? I can't think of a reason.

And I'd have 7 Theme Parks in which to walk. The zoo gets old after a while.

Plus, I think my family and friends would come to visit more than if I were in Georgia or something. That would be nice. :)

The "moving to Orlando" threads are my favorite.

10. Too Freaking Hot and Humid it's too freaking hot and humid where i live (even worse than orlando, if you can imagine that), but there's no disney world to compensate

9. No Seasons i already don't have seasons where i live (although on the other hand, the mediteranean is only 10 minutes from my house - but still no disney)

8. It's the Beginning of May and its 90 degrees out. same as where i live, but without disneyworld to take my mind off of it

7. Love Bugs love bugs?????....yup....we've got those and a whole lot of other creepy crawlys.....but no disney to take our minds off of it (are you seeing a pattern here?)

6. Hurricanes ok....so we don't have hurricanes....or tornadoes....nothing really of that nature other than sandstorms (and that's not very impressive)....we do have earthquakes every now and then - not like california though....although we are waiting for the every 100 year 'big one' that's destroyed cities through the millenium.....and again.....no disney to keep our midns off of the possibility....

5. No leaves changing colors ours don't change either...in fact ours don't really fall off as it never gets cold enough....

4. No Lilacs same here and no disney....

3. Huge bugs that fly i bet ours are even huger......and no disney to escape to...

2. Lizards (they are cute when I'm on vacation, but not when they would get in my house) lots of lizards.....but more frightening are the cobras and vipers we have (but no disney)

1.No chance of a White Christmas. ours isn't likely to be white either, but on this one i guess i can't really say that orlando is better, disney or no disney.......this is where it all started, after all......but still i'd rather be at WDW....

(lilacs smell, sorry, had a lilac bush in the back yard, its now mulch) oh lets not forget about those 4 legged friends of ours that love to dart out in front of you (deer) every hunting season, taxs, freezing rain, pot holes, cold, damp. oh thats true, we dont have many mice because the snakes eat them all! did i mention taxs. i have 4 years of taxilvania to go and im COMIN HOME to florida baby!! :rotfl:

I actually lived in Kissimmee from 2000-2002. I was 24-26 at the time. Here's what I thought:

pro's:
Live near disneyworld! (very near. I was literally a 5 minute drive to DTD)
can go to disney for free if you work for the mouse! (*1)
Sooooo many good restaurants nearby!
Easy to make friends (*2)
Lots of stuff to do! (*3)
Beaches so close! (even though I never went to one in those 2 years)
Lots of cities close by that are fun for day trips
Beautiful weather (*4)
sunsets - Orlando/Kissimmee had some of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen, and I have travelled a lot!

con's
(*1) The mouse don't pay so good though, unless you have an upper level job!

(*2) A lot of the friends that I met moved away quickly. To me it seemed like Disney is a city where people come and go a lot. Maybe because I was younger and making friends with a younger crowd of people (college programs, etc).

(*3) Yes, there is a ton of fun stuff to do in Orlando/Kissimmee, you will never get bored.. BUT everything costs money! I was a broke young woman!

(*4) Beautiful weather... but hot a lot of the time! I was from Texas at the time and had never lived in the North so it really didn't bother me too much... you just stay inside in the a/c when it's too hot! Now I live in NY and love the summers but HATE :headache:  the winters. Seriously. I would take hot weather over snow anyday!

The drivers. I think that because the area is so full of tourists there are a lot of people who don't know where they are going and the drivers are horrible!

Culture - outside of disney and Universal... it sometimes seems like there isn't much else going on in the city culture wise. Maybe that's because I worked at disney and didn't get out of those borders too much. I did go downtown a bit to go dancing but like Julie said in the last podcast, don't go there unless you want to get groped. I was young though and to me going downtown was fun.

along with weather... of course there is the chance of hurricanes. That's just something you get used to when you live in hurricane areas. I'm originally from Texas... right on the gulf coast so I know about it. Basically keep an eye on the weather channel, if one even LOOKS like it's headed your way in the slightest bit.. get out of town! That's how my dad and our family does it and so far so good *knocks on virtual wood!* Unfortunately.. yes, if one hits your area your home and posessions could be gone.. but that's the chance you take! Also, I don't remember exactly but I want to say that Central Florida does get some hardcore thunderstorms. Can anyone verify this? Oh, and of course the ever present summer rain showers in the middle of the day! But those aren't bad at all!

n/a -

Not sure about this one but jobs: I did a lot of temporary work while in Florida. I think I had like 4 temp jobs before I got a job at disney .. I'm not quite sure how the job market is ... unless of course you want a low paying job at disney and don't care about the money.. then you can always work food service or something that's on the lower end at Disney! I have a feeling they always need people for this kind of thing.

housing - obviously I was renting an apartment so I dont' know about housing or pricing in the area. The apartment I rented was a 2 bedroom and I want to say it was about 750-800 a month? It was a nice apartment.. I"m sure you could find a 2 bedroom cheaper somewhere else though. It was a pretty big apartment with a nice balcony, 1 big bathroom, and the usual dining room/kitchen/good sized living room. I felt safe where I lived and like I said, I was about 5 minutes from downtown disney!

I agree DisneyKevin. My family and I ARE moving to the Orlando area next spring. We cant wait. For those of you who do live in the Orlando area, any suggestions on where to move to. We will have a son starting High school the fall we move. We were thinking somewhere in Seminole County.

Yes, I am posting an answer to my husband. Since when is March 9 "the beginning of spring?" Our son will be going to Dr. Phillips HS, which I have heard is a good thing, but what happened to Seminole County? We are ending up smack in Orlando (Orange County), in Orlo Vista as a matter of fact, and I don't even know if that's a good thing or not.

I really must love my husband. I'm quite panicky about this move. I don't like palmetto bugs (I'm getting geckos as pets if I can since I hear the geckos eat the palmetto bugs!), I'm not great with heat and humidity, and I've lived in the same city in SE PA for my entire life. But we'll be down there a week from tomorrow, so I guess I'll learn to deal. Mikmin6554 says I have to start seeing the glass as half full instead of half empty. Hmmm..... ;)

Those would have to be pretty large geckos to eat the palmetto bugs. They creep me out too but not enough to scare back up North.

I used to live in W. PA. and I don't find the weather here much worse than it used to be up there. At least here I have a/c.

This is back!

I'll take another stab at why I'd live there.

1. It's warm
2. It's not cold.
3. It never freezes. Well, almost never.
4. No snow.
5. No ice.
6. Theme parks.
7. Warm in January
8. Warm in February
9. No snow in March.
10. It's not cold in the winter.

It's flippin WARM! Do I need more? No, I do not. When you toss in theme parks, there's a bit of a "duh" factor there. For me, anyway.

No chance of a White Christmas. What is it with the White Christmas? I don't get it at all.

Why on Earth would anyone care about snow on the ground for Christmas? Most folks I know wish for no snow all the time and especially at Christmas if they have to drive somewhere.

IMO it is just more bad weather on an otherwise nice and happy day.

I can see it being odd to shop for Christmas presents without having to put on tons of gear and try balancing yourself on the ice and slush in the parking lot as you slide-stop-step your way toward the door to the mall with the bitter wind racing up at you, forcing you to squint and lower your head, then having to turn your head to get a gasp of air and getting pelleted in the face with a bunch of zinging sleet bullets...

...to just get out of the car in nice, warm temperatures and walk into whatever store you felt like without having to prepare yourself and brave the elements would be different and might seem a little strange.

But I could get flippin used to it.

We will be there in 4 years at most, and I know I wont look back- ever.
DH came in from one hour of snowblowing the driveway recently, covered in snow and ice on his beard and said, as he shivered, if I ever question our decision remind me of this :cold:
I can visit in the fall - and for Christmas, then fly home to the sunshine :beach:

Thank You!!! I am forwarding this to all my friends and family. Every time I mention moving to Orlando to anyone, they say something about a white Christmas. I could give a fig about snow on Christmas. A few years ago it was 55 here on Christmas (a true fluke) and I thought it was awesome. It was WAY better than the year we couldn't go visit family because most of the roads were closed due to the blizzard that dropped 12 inches of the vile stuff. Nope, I don't get the white Christmas thing at all. It's ONE day and I've been there, done that, seen it and I'm OVER it.
