Just wanted to conduct a little poll to find out from ones travelling this route from the toronto area , what/where are your favourite or planned stops south for fuel ie leaving toronto and stopping in erie pa to fuel before turning south with the lack of good exits for fuel on I79 until pittsburgh- that kind of idea. Or a listing of you stops on these routes and even favourite gas stations ie price etc etc I know fuel milage varies with each car, but just wanted to get a general idea what others do for stops Thanks Jeff

Thanks

Good Morning Jeff

Like most I leave on a full tank of Gas, Our first stop is at Grove City PA I-79 ext 113, and then at Summersville Hwy 19, Then Charlotte I-77 Ext 90, then we normally stop at Brunswick Ga. I-95 ext 36, just before entering Florida. Sometimes even if we stop for a bathroom break or food I will top up if required. From Jacksonville we go to Vero Beach, then over to WDW

By my calculation that's 4 stops......
My DH is convinced that we only stopped 2 times for gas last year:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: it doesn't matter that I know how far MY van will go on a full tank. I knew it had to be around 4 stops.

Looks like we are driving again this year. Glad to hear that little bit about no place to stop between Erie and Pittsburgh. We are planning to leave around 2am so we'll need a java stop by the time we reach Erie. I'll make sure we gas up as well.

I have driven between Erie and Pittsburgh many times, and found many gas stations. Pretty much every exit has multiple gas stations (I did a quick count and found 18 exits between Erie and the outskirts of Pittsburgh - 16 of which have gas stations within a half mile of the exit) .

That is our usual route. The only variance is a stop in Erie for Steak N Shake....mmmmmmmmmm:thumbsup2, and we stop in St.Augustine instead of Vero.

We don't have any planned stops, but we go this route. The cheapest gas we had the whole way was on i26 @ a fake "Jiminy Cricket" (don't recall the name, but the logo was a Jiminy Cricket looking character) gas station.

Does anyone happen to know the approximate cost of the tolls while taking this route? have done some searches and cant seem to find how much it will be for them. Thanks :goodvibes

Bring a bag of loose US coins. I don't remember for sure how much it costs but its cheaper both ways to florida and back than running 1/4 the 407 one way up here.
As for the OP question. We dont plan stops other than where we plan on stopping for the night. We drive until the tank is low enough to fill. Usually 6 hours. The only other times we stop is when someone needs to go potty or time for food. When we stop for food no matter how empty the tank is we fill up cause we know we can get a good run after without stopping. Yes we have little ones. We trained them for long haul driving lol. Our kids are bad at the short trips, Are we there yet but for some reason Disney they don't ask. We usually make it just south of Pittsburgh before we have our first stop. We seem to end up at the same Mc donalds everytime lol. As soon as we get off the hwy and we see it we laugh. If we tried to hit it we would miss for sure.

I belive it is a little less than $3 from Buffalo to PA and then less than $2 in WV.

We too are thinking with the cost of airfare that this is the best option.. How long does it take from Hamilton? We are thinking of leaving at 3:00 pm and wondering when we would arrive.(we would drive straight through) Google maps says 20 hours but they don't include bathroom breaks. lol

I have always taken SWA so this is all new to me!

I would say 23-24 hours would be about right, but it could be (and probably has been) done in 20 hours depending on your stops and speed :)

Also you should try and get an idea of how busy the border is around 4pm on the day you are going. We lost an hour there on a previous trip.

There are 3 tolls along the way -- NYS Thruway is $2.85 at the PA border, and there are 2 in WV $1.25 each IIRC -- one where US-19 merges onto I-77 and another further south on I-77 but I'm not sure where. When you get to Princeton WV just before the tunnels, there was construction earlier this year and then again around Statesville NC. Have a nice trip.

We live in Oakville...it took us 24 hours going down including a 1.5 hour dinner break. Plus, other gas and potty stops. I packed a breakfast and lunch as well as snacks and drinks.

Coming home we did it in 21.5 hours. I'm not sure exactly why it was faster.

This year we are planning to drive again and we have already decided to eliminate the dinner stop. We will just get McD's or something like that. I think we will leave home around 2am and drive until about 10pm. We should get to at least Savannah, GA if not the FL state line.

Thanks!

We left home at about 3:30am so, 15 hours would be about 6:30pm. We got caught in rush hour traffic around Charlotte NC. We stopped just after that for dinner, but it was before Columbia, SC. So after 15 hours you would most likely be around Columbia or a little further south. Maybe even Savannah, GA depending on how fast you drive or how many times you stop.

Do a mapquest with Charlotte, Columbia and Savannah as the destination. It will tell you how many hours it will take.

I heard there was construction on the 2 tunnels were there any long delays getting thru the constructions zones :confused3

When we went through in April, there was no problem going south but we had a long wait coming north. I guess it's just the luck of the draw. You probably won't have any problems -- when we went through part was due to construction part to accidents. Good luck
