We are flying on Allegiant soon and we have already paid the money for the 2 bags of luggage. Yes I know it's a shame to charge but other airlines are charging more. They also state you may bring 2 carry-ons with no charge and purse or lap top bag.
My question I have another backpack with an extra pair of afo's. Will this be considered medical need? Will they want to charge me for my spare. The last time I checked them they got damaged. The reason I am bringing and extra pair is I was on a trip one time and one of my braces hinge broke. They are made out of plastic with a hinge at the heel. Duck tape didn't last to long. It's like when you are going on a trip and you have a flat tire and you have no spare.

Are the AFO's from the knee down? My husband has KAFO's which are from the hip down. We have to check them since they are quite large. I wrap them in bubble tape and then put them in a large duffle bag. The bubble tape protects them completely. They do not charge us extra since it is medical equipment.

I understand your worry about checking them. If they are more compact, I would put them in a large back pack and use that as one of my carry ons.

They are below the knee. I was planning on putting them in our backpack. They fit perfect in the back pack. I put our jackets around them to keep them from getting all scratched up. We may need them were we are traveling. I thought they would be considered medical equipment. I'm glad someone has first hand knowledge. Thanks.
