View Full Version : A Year In The Making!!! 2 weeks at All-Star Movies with family

In 2006, our true obsession with Disney started. Oh sure, my wife and I honeymooned at Disneyworld in 1998 (we'll revisit this later), Disneyland in 2001, then Disneyworld again AND a Disney cruise in 2004. Up until this point, we wanted it to be just adults, because in 2004 our son was just 4 and our daughter was only eight months old. We really did not want to be the family that took our kids when they were too young.

So, in June of 2006, our kids experienced their first tasting of Disney with a 7 night Disney cruise. Thankfully, we were able to have one set of grandparents come along on this journey to our little piece of heaven to have some fun as well. DS fell in love with the water slide, kids clubs and being able to drink soda at every meal. DD loved the kids club, the characters especially the princesses (after a day or two), endless chocolate milk and swimming in the pool. Oh sure, I did end up tearing a muscle in my foot playing basketball on the top deck, but it happened on the next to the last day and wasn't a major issue, other than the fact that it made me feel like I was drugging and advil around all day long for the next month. Plus all the extra stuff my DW had to do- it made for an interesting end of a great trip. Thank god for the porters at the port- he sure did earn his tip. Not only did he help carry out the bags; he helped her load the car also.

You'd think after a moment like that I wouldn't want to step on Disney property again, but OH NO!!! You're not stopping me or this family from going back. So we waited a whole six months, and returned to Disney in December of 2006 for Disney at Christmas time. This was our kid’s first official trip to the Disney properties. Both their mom and I didn't know how things would work out. At this time, our son was old enough at six and a half years old (those half years always mean something to kids), but our daughter was only three, so we were a little concerned about taking her to Disney, even if it was for six days. It would be a test to see how quickly we would be able to come back. We kept this trip a surprise until we pulled onto the Disney property. DS had put two and two together and know we where going to Florida. We simply told them that we where going to visit Tia (DW BFF) and their cousins. By the time we arrived they where fast asleep, so we checked in, unpacked the car and then woke them up. DS was so disappointed because all he wanted to do was see the cousins and play video games with them. After telling them we where at WDW, they said, fine- where is the water slide?

My daughter is not one to shy away from the spotlight, and wasn't about to let the fact that she couldn't ride on many of the rides stop her. When she saw the Barnstormer kids roller coaster, and she found out she could ride it, she was in that line as quickly as her little legs could get her there, smiling and laughing. Later that night, as mom and dad watched Wishes, since both kids were asleep in a double stroller asleep, mom and dad realized that this was working out really well.

Then came that moment, when as a parent, you know you've got something good.

Tinkerbelle starts her flight across the sky.

The crowd goes 'Ooooooo' and 'Awwwwww'.

All of the sudden, my daughter wakes up, looks in the sky, and sees Tinkerbelle fly across the sky.

She yells, "My Tinkerbelle!!! My Tinkerbelle she really does fly"....

...and then immediately falls back asleep.

Yep, you've got to be a parent to understand, but it was at that moment that both mom and dad realized that our kids were going to be Disney maniacs as well. And when it's an eight hour drive between your house and Disneyworld, you know it's something to do at least once a year.

So, we made the decision to start working on another trip. Of course, when, where would we stay, and how long will we stay?

When? Well, as quickly as possible, but knowing that we had other obligations within the next year, and saving money over that time frame would also come into play, we decided June of 2006. My wife is a educator (or a teacher for those who aren't politically correct) and as with most educators, June and July are not normally spent in the classroom. So, we've got a time.

Where would we stay? My wife has done a lot of reading up on Disney. (The internet is an amazing resource for research for anything, but Al Gore didn't invent it) She's talked to others that have gone. She's read books. If they could implant a microchip in her brain that contains all things Disney, she's have it done tomorrow. But no matter what, it's helped us in saving money and making it a special trip. More on her later, but it was decided that we would stay at the All-Star Movies resort on the property. Sure, there are other great resorts on the property as well. We've talked about the Port Orleans and Coronado Springs, only because the rooms are slightly bigger, but then reality set in, 'How much time do you actually spend in the hotel room?' For shorter trips in the future, we probably will stay here, but for the amount of tim e we'll be staying there, and the amount of money we'll be spending, we'll go cheap on the hotel room and large on everything else. So, All-Star Movies, here we come!!!

How long will we stay? OK, now becomes the toughest question of all. So, mom is an educator and is out for the summer, which means she has the 'vacation time', although she are never on vacation, because the good educators spend summers working on professional development and lessons. That leaves me to determine how much time I will be able to take off from work. Now, by the time we go in June of 2008, I'll have been with the same company for 11 years, so over the years I've accrued the time off. I'm up to five weeks of vacation a year, but getting more than a week off is sometimes difficult. After a small lobbying session with my manager, two weeks was approved!!! So, after my wife gets out of school for the summer and I work another week of being on-call for our company, we'll begin our trip down to Disneyworld!! YEAY!!!

Now, I'm sure there are going to be many more questions that you have between now and then, and believe me, I'll be happy to answer all of those, but at this very moment, my wife and I are doing something so much more exciting then Disney. I'm sure the suspense is killing you, but there's nothing more exciting than sitting in your driveway with all of your personal belongings that you'll never use ever again, and watching people in cars drive by, realizing that they don't want your stuff either. That's right!!! It's called a yard sale!! Needless to say, we've had some good laughs watching people stare at our stuff from their cars and drive away. (What, our stuff ain't good enough for you, either?) and arguments between our kids as they fight over who's gets to play the Nintendo Wii right now. But hey, at least we have each other's company.

Ah, another loser drives up, staring at us, our stuff, and they just continue to drive by. Oh well, I guess a trip to Goodwill is in our future.

Future posts will include the cast of character's that will be going to Disney in June, a better understanding of what everyone does in life, more humor about garage sales, high gas prices, parents who don't understand Disney, those signs you don't want you your kids to see on I-75, how to get the kids to save money, are we there yet? and much more.

Next installment - And now, our starting line-up!!! Introducing our main characters... (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?p=24759971&posted=1#post24759971)

I love the beginning of this trip. I guess, I should confess I'm the wife that he would like to make happy. I love all things Disney- always have. My earliest memories are of Main Street. We are under 40 days until this trip and I have spent countless hours planning this trip. I have a few surprises up my sleeves that even DH does not know about. I'll keep you posted.

Ah, so the first post has shown great interest in the DISBOARDS, so I shall continue.

Yard Sales - Gotta say that it was easy sitting back in a chair all morning, surfing the web and writing the first post, especially because it was nice outside here in Georgia, but I must say I would have had more fun mowing the lawn, or going through airport security, dealing with the IRS, or anything else that doesn't seem like much fun. But, then again, what else to do on a lazy Saturday morning. I did have access to the world by surfing the internet.

Anyway, speaking of the world, let's do some introductions on who's going to the world. I see I peaked the curiousity of some of our fellow DISBOARDs. I wouldn't want to think that any of the post-ers would be watching this thread from the scrapbooking threads because someone might have spilled the beans that this thread is here. (Busted, Mickeyteacher!!!!)

Here we go!!!

DH - 35 year old father of two, who would rather be referred to as 'Disney Husband'. My wife has told me that that DH refers me as 'Darling Husband', but I must admit that I'm more of a Disney Husband now. Sure, my wife would call me 'Darling', but seems kind of weird. I'm essentially a technology geek, I work in a data center all day long, monitoring computer servers, applying new technologies, and other things. I'm in to retro video games (only reason I would go garage saling would be to look for older video game systems, if you ask me), so at some point I'm sure I'll bring video games into this post at some point. I became more intersted in Disney when my wife and I went on our honeymoon. Until then, my parental units took me a few times to Disney, but I never really had much fun because I never understood what all you could do until my wife and I went when we got married.

DW - 33 year old mother of three (at least she'll tell you I'm a child as well), who is otherwise known as 'Mickeyteacher' to those on the DISBOARD. Works in the education field in the state of Georgia. When she's not sleeping, she's scrapbooking, and that's no crop. (har har har...) We have a desk set up in our bedroom where all the scrapping takes place. Hopefully sometime after we get back from our trip, I'll get the urge to finish off the basement, so we can set her up a large work area where she can do all of her scrapping and get our bedroom back. She lived a good portion of her childhood years in Florida, so she's gone to DisneyWorld so many times I think she's lost count. But because of this, she never had to get into DisneyWorld because, well, she was already a fanatic. All she had to do is mold me into one.

DS - Our 8 year old son, who is too much like his father when it comes to video games. If we let him, he could wake up in the morning, take small breaks to run to the rest room, a small 15-minute break to get food for lunch and dinner, and go to bed later in the evening, and still be upset that he has to go to bed, whenever that is. Oh well, I guess this is like most kids because, well, I would have done the same thing as a kid..... He loves the roller coasters and getting to drink soda at every meal. Hey, we are on vacation.

DD - Our 4 year old daughter, who is too much like her mother when it comes to scrapbooking. Yep, she loves to scrapbook. Should have known. As a young child, she somehow got a hold of a few pens and drew all over the front door to our house, which is white, so it still shows today, until I get a can of white paint and cover it completely up. As most girls, is into all of the Disney princesses. She's looking forward to going to BBB and getting her hair done. She loves Ariel, Cinderella, and Belle. She can not decide which princess to dress as at BBB. She has a different reason as to why to choose each princess.

These are your main characters on our trip. We have seven additional characters that will be joining us at different times during the trip. They include DW’s parents, my parents, my brother and DW’s cousin and his wife. I will introduce them soon. I believe that DW has arranged a Dismeet with some of you who will be at WDW when we are there.

As time goes on, you'll get to see me grow as a poster, since my first post was kind of boring. (No countdown, no listing of when I've gone to Disney, no pictures.) I do plan on learning as I go along, so keep an eye on how my posts get better and better as time goes on. Expect the next post either Tuesday or Wednesday night. (Late on those nights, and you'll understand why when you read them)

As many of you may have noticed, MickeyTeacher, who I think is a pretty nice gal, is wondering when the next post will be. Well, I haven't had much time to post because I'm in the one city that people think of when they say vacation...

That's right!!!!

I'm in beautiful LAS VEGAS, NEVADA!!!!

http://www.wildnatureimages.com/images%202/031021-016..jpg

I'm here at the Microsoft Management Summit 2008, which without going into a long discussion on what it is, I'll just be blunt: It's a conference for computer geeks. You can go to http://www.mms-2008.com/ if you're interested in more information, but I figure that most people will just overlook this and continue on reading.

I wanted MickeyTeacher to join me, but we discussed it, and because of how busy her job is this time of year, we decided aganist it. It is my goal to come out here with her, just the two of us, for a long weekend, or a couple of days early in a week. I'm sure she's rolling her eyes because she probably doesn't think she'll ever get out here, but trust me, I'll get her here somehow.

Anyway, I've got to get to my next session. I've got two more today, then a couple tomorrow before I fly out of here to go home. Looking forward to getting frisked at airport security. Hopefully, the Las Vegas airport security is as entertaining as it has been in previous visits. (My third visit to the town.)

Another true Disney pre-trip report posting will come sometime within the next week, and I'm hoping by Monday evening if at all possible.

One week later, I've returned to the reality of my kids and my regular job. . I'm going to have to take my wife one of these days to Las Vegas. She's a good woman, and deserves a little bit of pampering. Next year's conference is again in Las Vegas. I don't think I'll get the opportunity to go, seeing as how it's on the same week as this year was, which, I'm sad to say is a hard week for my wife to find time off for.

During my evenings in Las Vegas, I walked through a lot of the hotels in the area to see the various architecture involved in building these mega-resorts. I would also take the opportunty to walk through the casinos as well. It was also interesting to see what kind of slot machines they have, especially with the improvements in technology.

One of the things I always noticed within the casinos were the people sitting at either a table or in front of a slot machine, where they looked liked they have been sitting there for an extended period of time. Some of them looked like they had been sitting there for days, zombies either flipping cards or clicking buttons on a slot machine over and over again. This is the one reason why I'm glad that the Disney cruise ships do not have casinos on board. I hope that their two new ships also keep casinos off the ships.

OK, so we gave you the main characters in our first few posts, but as with all shows, there are supporting actors and actress. During the two weeks we are at Disney, we'll have supporting actors and actresses coming and going throughout the week in waves.

First wave: Four days after we arrive at Disneyworld, we welcome my mother, father, and brother. My father is getting ready to retire from his job of over 40 years. My mother has been retired from her job for at least two years. My brother works for a technology company, much like I do. When my brother and I were kids, my parents took us to Disneyland in California. I was pretty young, but I still remember bits and pieces of that trip. We got to go to Universal Studios, and I got to see the Hulk, which freaked me out. That was the days before CGI, where they used a lot of green paint to make the Hulk, well, the Hulk.

Later in life, my parents and I went to Disneyworld a couple of times, and while I always had a good time, we never quite got it. It wasn't until I met my wife when I 'got it' about the fun and joy of DisneyWorld. Disney for them was a place where you stood in lines, ate bad food and it was really hot. We never stayed on site because it was too expensive. See my parents are not planners, so sit-down meals never happened because we did not plan ahead.

One of the things that my kids want, and, well, I want, is to go to Magic Kingdom with their grandparents. Because they understand it, they want those memories of being there with grandma and grandpa. (OK, so maybe they don't put it that way, but I think that's what they want, or will realize later in life that's what they want.) Somehow, we talked them into going. Well, because my brother has always wanted to go back, it only makes since for him to go as well. The kids really want him there as well. The kids are looking forward to showing grandma and grandpa the characters and the castle. MickeyTeacher has booked their whole stay and picked places for us to eat that will make my parents happy. Characters at two meals and seafood at the third. On the night that we go to Cape May, we will celebrate my father’s retirement.

The next wave is MickeyTeacher’s cousin and his lovely wife. DCousin has been to Disney once. He thinks he might have gone to a park or two, but does not remember. See he was in high school and there for an FBLA conference. They stayed at the Swan and went to classes all day. He has never eaten with the characters, seen the castle or walked down Main Street. Now, DCoz’s wife has never been to Disney World. We are looking forward to making her a Disney Nut. They have just found out that they are expecting their first child later this year, so no coasters for her. They are excited about the baby and the trip. While at WDW, DCoz’s wife will be celebrating her birthday. We hope Mickey can make it a fun day!

The last wave is MIL and FIL. See we travel with them often and have a great time doing it. They went with us on our last cruise. They like to enjoy different places with all of us. They have not been to WDW since 1992. Even then they only went to Epcot for their 4th wedding anniversary. They have enjoyed the planning part of this trip, because MickeyTeacher has done it all. They are go with the flow, have a good time people. They will be happy as long as they can get a glass of wine and a good imported beer.

Finally, sorry it took so long to get another post on here. I'll try to keep up better from now on. Til next time...

thanks for some more trip report! can't wait to read more. sounds like you will have a lot of fun with all the different people. will your mom and dad be there at the same time as mickeyteachers mom and dad? how lucky for your children to be at wdw with both sets of grandparents.

You'd think we'd have both sets of grandparents there at the same time. Both my parents and MickeyTeacher's parents get along great together.

I think MickeyTeacher would agree when I say that the most important thing on this trip is not the fact that we'll be at Disney for two weeks, or the fact that for two weeks we'll have someone else make our beds, clean our room, and fix our breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The most important thing for MickeyTeacher and I are that DS and DD get to have an incredible time at Disney, and that they get as many memories as they can. Can't remember if I said this or not, but they talk about walking down Main Street with grandma and grandpa, and it's kind of hard to do that when both grandparents are there at the same time.

Therefore, my parents make the first visit during the first week, and MickeyTeacher's parents show up during the second week.

Glad you're enjoying the pre-trip report. More good stuff to come.

Happy Memorial Day!!!!

Well, it's Monday, May 26th. In another eleven days, we will begin our magical journey through some horrible traffic in the metro Atlanta area, down Interstate 75, to 17 days of rest, relaxation, and fun at DisneyWorld. I must admit, after a few hard weeks at my job, I've now got the bug to go.... tomorrow if I could.

Actually, I've got the bugs right now. We had a party on Saturday night at our house. We had a great time - it's been a while since I've laughed like that. But a few of us sat out on our deck last night, which of course, meant that a lot of people were coming in and out on the deck, which meant that the door was being opened a lot. Now, we have about six flies entertaining us throughout the house. Oh, joy, the fun.

Anyway, I'm not the only one who's ready to go. MickeyTeacher has had some rough weeks at her job, but now that summertime is here, as an educator, it's going to get much easier. As someone who has never taught, I always thought one of the advantages to being a teacher is having two months off in the summer. I can honestly say that MickeyTeacher works hard throughout the summer, preparing for the following year. However, like me, she plans on taking 17 days to forget about our jobs, forget about our responsibilities, and remember the good time, or in this case, create memories for our children.

--------------

OK, so as parents, MickeyTeacher and I are trying to teach our kids the value of money. About a year ago, I started two jars on the kitchen counter. I called them 'change jars', but then we ended up changing the name to 'Disney jars', as they allowed us to save money by just depositing our spare change into the jars, separating the pennies from everything else. (I hate pennies, so I separate them now versus later.)

The kids have been totally into this, and understand that instead of buying candy, or toys at the store, or anything else they see, they take a spare quarter, dollar, or whatever we give them, and stick them into the jars. They see the money add up, and realize that we'll have a good time without having to worry about how much money we are spending. As the month’s went by, we exchanged all the rolled coins for paper money and kept a running tab of what we had saved. I made a poster with a Mickey on it. The kids where very excited to see the money going up. I suggest this to any parent that needs to teach their child, or children, the value of money. We also suggested to the grandparents that Disney Dollars was a good way to spoil the kids with out all the little junk. So for Christmas, Valentines, Easter and good report cards, the kids received a little bit of money- so they each had about $100 to spend on there own.

Also, with gas prices at a high unlike we've ever seen before, I've also saved up gas money. I figured about two months ago that about $220 would cover the costs of gas and meals to and from Orlando, coming from the northern part of metro Atlanta.

Now, it looks the $220 I have saved up will only cover the cost of gas. Well, it could be worse, but I do wish it was better.

------------

Another week of work for me, minus Monday, and another few days for MickeyTeacher to get everything shut down in her classroom. After that, the excitement is going to start to eat us alive. I remember on the Disney cruise we took back in 2006, I was sleeping the morning we were to board the ship. I was sound asleep, and MickeyTeacher was lying next to me. The next thing I know, I have her tugging at me, imitating the commercial that was on TV at that time, saying, "Can't sleep, too excited.", and, "Too excited, can't sleep."

I'm sure that she'll be doing this again at least once during the next eleven days.
