My favourite summer fruits are raspberries  and strawberries.

We have a Canon Powershot A570 IS and bought it for our 2007 WDW trip. On auto it does well and produces some mighty fine pics if used on the specialist settings. The only downside is it runs on AA batteries which is fine if you buy good ones.

Here is a recent pic taken on auto (as our pup was sitting still for once)

What fresh Spring/Summer fruits do you enjoy?

Melons, strawberries, pineapples that are actually ripe! Blueberries. THere's a local farm where we go to pick our own berries.

Do you have a digital camera? If so, what type, and what are the pros, and cons of it?

I have a Canon Powershot. It's very good at times--esp sporting events because I can keep the button pressed and just take multiple pics--clear action shots! :goodvibes Bad--too many options. And a little too bulky to carry all the time, esp at WDW. Needs it's case, can't just dump it in my backpack.

Do you have a cell phone? If so, what do you have?
I do...but it's not soemthing I use to just chat on. I'm getting better at texting, tho! I just have it incase someone needs to reach me while I'm out of the house. It's a Samsung.

Do you have a cell phone? If so, what do you have?

I do. I need to have one, since I commute to work & we sometimes have train problems. It's nice to be able to call dad from the train & tell him we're late, don't worry about it. I have a very basic LG, but it does have a camera, and I can do some basic texting from it too. Which comes in handy when I'm watching my nieces & need to get in touch with my sister.

I have the cheapest cell phone.....free ;)
I was just added to DD's plan. Only use it for when I am out and traveling. And then I often forget to turn it on  We get no reception at home.
I wanted it as simple as possible, it still has too many options for me. I have someone else set things up for me and update it now and then :rotfl:
I am really not much of a phone person.

Hey, everyone! Thanks for all the good wishes! We had a great time. Plenty of time on the beach and the pool at the condos was fantastic! Concert band received 1st place and symphonic and wind ensemble received 2nd. We were the only band that placed in all three categories.

What fresh Spring/Summer fruits do you enjoy?
strawberries, grapes, watermelon

Do you have a digital camera? If so, what type, and what are the pros, and cons of it?
I have a Kodak C340 and takes good pictures and is easy to use.

Do you have a cell phone? If so, what do you have?
I have a cell phone but I don't know what kind it is. It was passed down to me when Joe got a new phone. It's a Verizon and has LG on the front.

Since today is Earth Day, here are questions related to it.

*Are you doing anything special today to celebrate Earth Day?

*How do you help the earth? Ex. Do you recycle, reuse, bring your own shopping bags instead of using what the store offers....?

spookysarah
04-22-2009, 03:23 AM
Cute dog :).

Thank you. He is called Ryan and is a Gudie Dog for the Blind puppy. He was one on Sunday and we are dreading the phone call from our supervisor to give us the date that he has to leave us for the training centre.

As for mobile phones, I have a Nokia 6111 which I loved at the time but I am hankering after something else now. My DD is going phone shopping this week. If anyone watches 90210 she loves the Sidekick but it is not available here so I have found the LG KS360 which also has the full keyboard - ideal for texting teens.

Earth Day? Nothing special here. We recycle as much as we can. Our council provides kerbside collection for a lot of things and we have a great recycling depot.

Yes to above, plus we use the engery saver light blubs. Also don't let the water run much, IE: turn it off while brushing teeth, short showers, ect.

Meriweather
04-22-2009, 08:24 AM
recycle, use reusable bags (when I remember to bring them into the store with me).

Not doing anything special.....just staying home alone

Kirby
04-22-2009, 08:47 AM
Thanks!

I'm not doing anything special today except wait for the appliance repair man. Our refridgerator is not cooling.

I do recycle, sometimes not as well as I should but our recycle bin that is picked up each week is usually full. And I take my own grocery bags to the store when I remember to do so. If I don't, I just keep the plastic ones to use around here or take them back to the stores recycle bin. I also ask to have my groceries bagged in paper bags sometimes. I use those around the house too with my recycling.

Missy1961
04-22-2009, 09:01 AM
We recycle everything that we can! I've also started to use Rubbermaid plastic water bottles, so I can refill & reuse them instead of buying water in bottles. It's cheaper too! We don't run the water when brushing teeth, etc. I'm also a nut about turning lights off when I leave the room. I wash as many loads of laundry in cold water as I can, and even when I use hot water to wash, I rinse in cold. I only run the dishwasher when it's full.

Hoped to not turn on the air today but had to. It's up in the 90's. I love having my windows open but it is just too warm at the moment. I'm hoping that it cools down in the next day or too. I really shouldn't have to turn on the air until June.

Good job to all of you who are helping the earth.

I had printed out some Earth Day coloring pages for my kids to color. We started off with planting seeds yesterday, and today we will plant a yellow gardenia plant as a family. I will also have my kids make tin can herb pots.

At our house, we recycle our cans, bottles, and plastic bottles, and try to reuse packages, and such. We try not to turn on the fans, and we are luck that we usually do not have to use the fans until it gets close to summertime.

I only have a light on a short while in the morning, then open all my mini blinds until the sun goes down. Also I hardly ever use my A/C (even though its better for my asthma and allergies then opening the windows and doors).

Do you like to put gravy, and sauces, on your food?

Pooh67_68

No and even though when I make spaghetti it has sauce I scrape as much of as possible.

Kirby
04-23-2009, 10:18 AM
Spaghetti's just about it. I don't make chicken fried steak anymore because I don't fry foods at home. I do get gravy on it when I eat out. When I cook a roast or pork chops on the stove, I'll use the gravy left over on potatos or rice.

OT but we are going to see our first Guide Dog puppy on Friday. He has almost finished stage one of his training and will be moving on to the next stage soon. We're so excited! I'll be sure to post a photo.

We have no need to rent a car here n the UK but when the last 2 trips to Florida we have hired a minivan and both were Grand Caravans. Next year we are thinking about hiring a Dodge Durango.

What is your most favorite alcoholic drink?

I would pretty much call myself teetotal. I could count on one hand the amount of alcoholic drink I had last year. I just don't like the way alcohol (even one drink) make me feel but I love the taste of Long Vodkas and Baileys.

What do you think of the Swine Flu? Are you worried?

Pooh67_68
05-03-2009, 06:01 AM
I think the media is making it seem worse then what it really is.

Kirby
05-03-2009, 11:56 AM
Seems I have a number of questions to answer. I've been bothered with vertigo for the last week and really haven't felt like doing much.

Nursery rhymes/songs? Hmmmm, I had a nursery rhyme book that I used to read over and over. I really enjoyed music in elementary school but the songs we sang escapes me at the moment. My favorite jump rope song was Cinderella dressed in yellow.

Sign language? In the sixth grade, my class taught ourselves the alphabet. We were not allowed to talk at lunch and that's the way we got around it. ;)

Car rentals? We've rented three times. Once we rented a huge seven passenger cargo van for a trip to Colorado because our van wouldn't have made it. We rented a Ford Aerostar for a week while my van was being worked on. And we rented a Dodge Caravan to drive to Chicago at Christmas because we didn't trust my van. So, I guess you could say that we rent vans.

Alcoholic drink? When I drink, which is hardly ever, I like a Marguerita on the rocks. I don't like the way alcohol makes me feel. I wish I could find a wine that I like but haven't yet. Still searching though.

Jewelry? I only wear my wedding ring and that is not all the time. I was never much of a jewelry person but I did used to always have a pin on my blouse when I worked outside the home.

Ice cream sundae topping? Chocolate and peanuts when I occasionally indulge.

Swine flu? I think that they are making much more of it than they should. I'm still going about my business, just washing my hands when I can.

Did I miss any?

Thanks for asking:
I have a 3.5lb Yorkie-Poo(Yorkshire Terrier and Poodle).:dogdance: and she is all black. She has the straight hair like her mum,not the curly coat like her dad! She is 11 months old and has seemed to have trained herself!!:rotfl: She just recently decided that she wants to go outside to do her business instead of doing it on the puppy pads!!!:confused3:laughing: We are still baffled what brought this about!!??!!:confused3
We went to WDW for a week and came back and that's what she was doing!! She is the cutest though!! Do I sound prejudiced? :rolleyes1
She walks on her hind legs and dances when she wants something especially your attention!:laughing:We also have a Black Labrador Retriever who is 14 next month. We know she is getting old but she doesn't know it!! She still thinks she is a puppy!! She's just a little slow on the uptake!! The two get along fine infact they really don't care that much about each other at ALL!! Who 'd thought two females could get along so well!!
What would we do without our pets!! :confused3;) I say certainly smile a little less....;)

Sorry if I haven't been on the board that much this past week. Have had a series of crisis's to deal with culuminating in Holly the wonder greyhound having surgery for a broken right back Femur (although how she managed to do this over the weekend we have no clue) this morning. To top that off, she also managed to partailly tear her ACL ligament on that same leg over Easter. So she is probably out of surgery by now, and has to stay off her feet for the next 4 to 6 weeks. Trying to get a greyhound not to run is going to be a challenge, but she's such a couch potato I don't think it will be a problem. So I'm hoping that she is going to have a long and slow recovery.
Will not be celebrating Cinco De Mayo, am more gearing up to getting her home this afternoon. Have a great day everyone!!

Sorry to hear about your dog Trish. Have been on the waiting end too,not a fun place to be!! We almost lost our Black Lab 3 years ago! She had such a severe uterine infection that she almost lost her life!! She had to under go a 5 hour operation to save her. She pulled through and when the vet came to talk to us he said he took n 11 lb uterus out of her!! It was so infected she was lucky to still be here!! We were so relieved he saved her life!! Now we have a little puppy and we are always worried about her. She's not a good eater!! I swear they are just like having another child! But I would be lost without them! Hope she is as good as new real soon!!

Thanks for all your support. Called the vet, and is going in for surgery now. Expected to take 2 to 3 hrs pending no complications. It was a clean break, and they don't expect any problems with it. Will probably pick her up tomorrow afternoon, as I doubt she will be out of recovery in time for us to take her home tonight. Dozer our male greyhound, is very upset (which is an understatement), and have had to take him with me when I took my older son to kindergarten this afternoon, otherwise he would have destroyed the place looking for her. Still hasn't forgiven hubby for taking her to the vet and leaving her there. Holly the mutt yesterday when DH took her back to the vet made a flying leap out of the truck when he got there:scared1::scared1:. DH had to make a quick lunge to catch her in time. She's a feisty dog, and has a Diva complex, so won't give up the fight to get better. Just hope that the ACL ligament is not torn completely through, which would require another surgery (and another major vet bill, OUCH!), in the next 6 weeks. Have a great day everyone!

What things do you hope to get accomplished today?

BELLEDOZER
05-06-2009, 10:13 AM
I'm sorry to report that our hound Holly did not survive her surgery yesterday. Vet thinks that a blood clot migrated to her heart during the surgery and killed her. Safe to say that her death was sudden, and we were all expecting her to survive and thrive after it. I have contacted our local Greyhound Pets Inc rep to make arrangements for us to adopt another hound as a buddy for our large male greyhound DOZER. He does not do well as a single dog, and will panic if any of us leave the house. While we would have rather waited a couple of months before adopting, we have very little choice in the matter, as we have to put Dozer's and the needs of the kids first. So our local rep is fast tracking the adoption application, and will be heading down to Woodinville, WA to adopt another hound on Saturday. Our goals for today, is to have the local GPI rep sign off on the paperwork for the new hound, and take Michael to Kindergarten. Will be taking DOZER everywhere with me via crate until we adopt another hound. Sorry for the bad news.

Thanks for all your support during this difficult time. Dozer spent the night wandering the house looking for her. He panics if either Dave or myself leave the house. I tried to go take Michael to school and leave him home, but as soon as I put on my jacket, he went into total panic mode, and I had to take him with me in the crate. While he hates being in a crate, he hates being home alone a great deal more, but you try to manouver a 90lb dog into a crate that doesn't want to go, so I've been having fun with that. Will have to take him with me in the van when I go out for the remainder of the week until we can find a buddy for him. GPI has lot's of hounds to choose from, so I'm sure that we will find another hound that is a good match for us. We are taking both kids, and Dozer to find his new buddy on Saturday. So Nancy, I'm heading in your general direction on Saturday. Will let everyone know when we have found a new hound to give a forever home to.

Have been approved for another hound, and will be heading down to Woodinville WA on Sat to give another greyhound a forever home. Am still awaiting driving directions, as they opened their kennel that houses up to 22 of the needle noses a couple of months ago. Had a long talk with the local rep, and even though it was never confirmed by the vet, strongly suspect that Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) was the cause of the Femur break and her crossing over the rainbow bridge. This disease is something that greyhounds are prone to as they are so leggy. Hope that everyone is having a greyt day!

I melt butter/margarine and add garlic powder or salt to it. Then I lay the shrimp on top. Put in the broiler for a couple of minutes, not too long. Then turn them all over and back in the broiler for a little longer. Doesn't take long at all. I serve it over rice.

Do you have a recipe for your fried rice?

Kinda. It's one of those things I just throw together. but this is the general idea:

I cook rice (whatever type you prefer--I use long grain white rice). While it's cooking, I dice some celery & onions. I'll cut up cooked pork or chicken (we prefer pork). I saute the celery & onions in some oil until they are tender. After the rice is cooked, I drain it, fluff it with a fork, then put it back into the pot it cooked in. (you need stirring room, LOL). I add some dashes of soy sauce, then stir until it's the proper shade of brown. (see what I mean about 'throwing it together?). I add the meat, the onions & the celery & some frozen peas. Then I bake it in the oven at 350 degrees for an hour or so.

The beauty of this recipe is you can add anything--cooked shrimp (but I would add them after the rice is baked or they will get rubbery), cooked chicken or pork, scrambled eggs (again after the rice is baked.). You could add some bell peppers to the celery & onions & saute them. Also, you could add peas & carrots instead of just peas. Basically, you can add whatever you like or have in the fridge--it's a great way to use up leftovers. That's why I made it--I made the pork tenderloin for dinner on Sunday with mashed potatoes & sauerkraut, so I had it leftover.

Well most islands have fruit of some kind, so I would eat fruit and then there is always fish, if you can catch and cook it.

Doesn't this sound fun!! pirate:

Pirates League Sets Sail in Magic Kingdom June 29

Calling all scoundrels, rogues and ne'er-do-wells -- Captain Jack and the crew of the Black Pearl want YOU.

Beginning late June, the Pearl drops anchor in Adventureland for "The Pirates League," recruiting and training park guests of all ages in the scurrilous ways of buccaneers.

Each guest checking in at the plunder-filled recruitment office gets an official pirate name. Next step is the Muster Station where -- after applications of beards and eye patches, scarves and scars, earrings and gold teeth -- the new recruits leave their old identities behind.

Past a hidden portal and into the treasure cache, the new shipmates speak the pirate oath and have their official "pirate portrait" taken before being turned loose on an unsuspecting Adventureland -- and no doubt feeling right at home at the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction.

Guests can chose from three daily pirate packages:

*

First Mate Package: Includes bandana; choice of facial effects – scars, tattoos, fake teeth, earring and eye patch; sword and sheath; pirate coin necklace; one 5x7 inch photo and personalized pirate oath - $49.95 plus tax
*

Empress Package: Includes bandana; shimmering makeup – face gem, tattoos, nail polish, earring and eye patch; sword and sheath; pirate coin necklace; one 5x7 inch photo and personalized pirate oath - $49.95 plus tax
*

Captain's Package: Includes choice of costume/outfit from selection: choice of facial effects - scars, tattoos, fake teeth, earring and eye patch; sword and sheath; pirate coin necklace; three 5x7 inch photos and personalized pirate oath - $124.95 plus tax.

Newly donned swashbucklers can test their pirate prowess on the streets of Adventureland where they search for clues and discover treasures. And for mateys who need a little more training, learn the secrets for survival by the Captain himself during “Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Tutorial.”

For those of you who are not married....If you were to get married, where would you like to have your honeymoon at?

spookysarah
05-18-2009, 03:12 AM
Yikes, I have loads to answer. I have been too busy finishing my 2007 trip report. Only took 19 months!

What is the last five things you ate?

Branflakes (breakfast)
Fruit oatcakes (supper)
Orange (supper)
Stovies (dinner)
Homemade soup (lunch)

If you were stranded on a deserted island, what would you eat to survive?

I might go hungry as I don't like seafood. I'd have to live on fruits and veggies and any red meat I caught. :scared1:

What three things do you eat that other people might think is disgusting or they would not think of trying?

I honestly can't think of any but my DH like proper haggis (I only eat the veggie kind) and black pudding (it has pigs blood in it). Yuk!

Are you a scrapbooker? If so what type-digital, albums...?

No, but my mum and daughter are. I am always impressed with their work.

If you were to come to Hawaii, what three things would you like to do first?

I am sorry to say I do not know much about Hawaii so I guess I would knock on your door and ask you to be me tour guide. ;)

How long have you been married for?

I've been married for 13 years on 28th May. I was 19 and DH was 22. We have been together since we were 16 and 19. I am lucky to have found my soul mate so young. :lovestruc

WAY back when we were on our honeymoon a tour guide was talking about what not to miss and he was saying you shouldn't miss a Hawaiian sunset because it is spectacular and as the sun slips into the water you can swear you can hear it "sizzle"!! We all laughed and that night as we were returning from our tour we stood on the beach and watched the sunset and if you tried real hard you could almost swear you could hear the "sizzle"!! Talk about the power of suggestion!! :rotfl:That is most likely only told to gullible tourists!!;):lmao::rotfl:
We went to the luau at our hotel called The Outrigger right on Waikiki Beach!! it was so long ago I don't remember all the things we had to eat But I do remember having traditional luau fare like roast pig and think there also was turkey as well! The pina coladas were to die for, made with fresh coconut and they had vanilla ice cream on the bottom!! you could easily gain 20 lbs from them alone !:scared1: Yes I did try poi! That was the first and last time I ate it!! I guess you have to acquire a taste for it!!!??!!:confused3 If I went back I would definitely love to do a luau again for the entertainment alone!!:thumbsup2

My DH and I will be:bride: married :groom: 24 years on Sept.21st!! We have been together for 29yrs!! Wow that's more than half our lives!!:laughing: But we are true soul mates and I couldn't have been luckier to find such a terrific person to spend the rest of my days with!!:hug:

Sarah what is knickerbocker glory??? I'm always looking for something new!!!;):thumbsup2

From wikipedia - A knickerbocker glory is a very elaborate ice cream sundae that is served in a large tall glass, particularly in the United Kingdom. In the United States, the closest equivalent would be a parfait.

The knickerbocker glory was first described in the 1930s and contains ice cream, jelly, fruit and cream. Layers of these different sweet tastes are alternated in a tall glass and are topped with different kinds of syrup, nuts, whipped cream and often a cherry. Layers of meringue, fruit and even alcohol may be included but, as with an ice cream sundae, there is no precise recipe.

The name knickerbocker glory is drawn from knickerbockers, a type of long trouser traditionally worn by young children (but particularly young boys). Glory reflects the typical reaction of a child presented with such a dessert.

I don't scrapbook.

Three things that I would like to do first in Hawaii would be to go to the beach, go to a luau and just hang out.

I will be married 28 years on June 12th. We went to Corpus Christi on our honeymoon.

I don't know what color I would paint my house if it were not brick. I'd probably have a white house with blue shutters.

I like a lot of things. I can post Joe's favorite dish recipe on here if someone wants it. It's call Spaghetti Pie.

Five favorite desserts?
Fresh strawberries on angel food cake with whipped cream
brownies
snickerdoodles
plain cheesecake
chocolate cake and ice cream
peach cobbler (sorry, had to add a 6th)

Sarah, I saw that knickerbocker glory. Looks scrumptious! I'd just add a little chocolate and some peanuts.

Lynne, how long do you keep the banana and chocolate in the oven?

My birthday is October 5th. Joe's is October 6th. And, yes, we are 24 hours apart. He was born in Iowa though.

I'd like to learn Spanish.

Been gone for a week and what a lot of good questions I've missed! My mom had a heart attack last Saturday night and I've spent most of last week with her.

I don't scrapbook.

Thanks! I take her to her cardiologist Tuesday. She has another blockage that she has to decide whether to have a stint put in or treat it medically. Not an easy decision for her.

If you were able to learn how to do one thing, what would it be? (Ex.square dancing, learning another language....)?

I'd like to learn to decorate cakes, but I'd also love to develop my scrapbooking skills...I would love to take a few classes! :goodvibes

To the people that want to learn sign language...you should...I took asl in college for two semesters and it was awesome! :thumbsup2

Growing up, did you do anything to celebrate Memorial Day? What do you do now to celebrate if any?

Thanks!

We didn't do anything special growing up. Sometimes we had the day off from school and sometimes we didn't. We don't really do anything special now either though sometimes we do get together with family.

Thanks! I'll let you know. We spent the afternoon with her and my aunt. My aunt is here for awhile to help out. It was so nice of her to come and give me a little break. My mom was in good spirits and getting around fairly well though she tires easily.
