Very nice. You'll have to tell me about the video at Jim Henson. They were shooting it the day we were there. Oh, and are there any teenagers on the trip? Maybe Quinn and Diana should introduce them to the Great American Churro Challenge.
Glad to see you enjoyed the game show. Isn't Matt great? Can't wait for your other installments!

I'm just checking in briefly because we just got back to the hotel and are getting ready for dinner. But we had a very special experience instead of the Hollywood tour as the last event of the day...it's not a regular part of the tour, although I think they'd like to make it one. Also, we met a celebrity at Jimmy Kimmel Live (no, not Jimmy, and it wasn't part of the tour, just luck). More details soon...hopefully tonight if we make it back from dinner early enough. We're taking a bus so goodness knows!

We just arrived at the Grand Californian and are settling in before meeting up for a wine tasting, dinner, and a special surprise at DL tonight. Imagineering was AWESOME! Problem was, everyone took so long buying stuff at Mickey's of Glendale that we ended up leaving late for the Studio. That was okay because the Studio wasn't nearly as exciting; the best part for me was seeing the Partners and Friends statues. I'll be blogging the details of the day tonight or tomorrow, depending on how late we get in from the park.

I crashed like a sack of potatoes yesterday when we got back to the room, and I've been on the go since 7 this morning. We just stopped in to get changed for dinner at Napa Rose, but I'll try to do an update tonight. Let me just say that seeing Walt's apartment was AWESOME...did I say it was AWESOME? YES! But the behind the scenes peek at Indy was pretty darned cool too, as was our pirate visitor at lunchtime. And speaking of characters, if you enjoy lots of interaction and photos ops, you'll love the breakfast. It's just the ABD group.
The VIP fastpasses actually worked out well for us. We had just enough to do repetitive rides on our two favorites (Indy and Space Mountain) before coming back to the hotel. Oh well, better run 'cause dinner awaits but the blog will be much more detailed about last night and today.

We didn't get to try yesterday since they refused our FP totally, but today we had success once on Indy and once on Space Mountain (our of five VIP fastpasses) so that gave us 7 rides on 5 passes. Believe me, that was plenty!! It was great!

Wow, they do keep you going. This is a silly question but did you know you'd have to keep changing for dinner? Did they ever tell you about dress codes at the various dinner spots or for any other time? And exactly what are you changing into..from shorts to pants or business casual??? Just want to make sure we bring the right items with us. Thanks again for you wonderful, excellant trip reports. Have you ever considered writing a book?

Barb or Brad,
What time did you meet at the Wine Cellar? About what time did you have dinner at Hook's Point? Our first night at DLR is Grad night. According to the Disneyland calendar, Disneyland closes at 9:00 and California Adventure closes at 7:00. Do you think we will have enough time to go to Disneyland after dinner?
Thanks for you help! I am loving both your blogs.

yes, we had a reserved section (no seating, no food) for F! right near the middle tower in the front (there was a section of guests in front of us and then a pathway and we were elevated). the view was amazing.
not sure on the timing of the meals. i think it was 5 for the wine cellar and we were there for maybe 30-45 minutes and headed to hook's pointe.

Boo hoo, it's over! (Well, mostly.) I don't think there was a dry eye in the house at the final dinner when we shared our favorite memories and saw a photo show of the highlights of our trip. Our park tickets are good for tomorrow, but none of those wonderful FPs. I will be blogging the rest of the trip, but suffice to say that today's big thrill for me was behind the scenes at Soarin', although a close runner up was getting a drawing of Figment and Dreamfinder from a Disney animator. This trip has been all we hoped for and more. We might even do it again in a year to see what changes. There were a few minor things I would change or tweak, but overall it was amazing and I would most definitely recommend it to anyone.

Alas, it's the last morning. I got most of the next day of my report done last night before I zonked out, so it will definitely be up tomorrow by the afternoon (I may be a zombie during the day, depending on how well I sleep on the plane since we fly out at 10 p.m.). We're getting ready to head down to breakfast, although some people are gone already due to early flights. Hopefully we'll be keeping in touch with some and who knows...maybe even going on another adventure!

I was at the resort today getting ready for a wine tasting class with Michael Jordan from Napa Rose and I ran into Quinn and talked with him for a min. I knew there was a guide name Quinn but I didn't realize it was him. Everyone that has him as a guide is very lucky. you know, i made it a point at the goodbye dinner to say that despite knowing a lot of the details ahead of time, the whole thing did surpass my expectations by a mile. and what i didn't really say is that despite the fact that i did once tell Jim that I'm not really on the trip to make friends, so many of them make it hard to keep it that way. everyone was really nice.. everyone, i definitely felt like the weakest link in that chain.
I spent an awful lot of time chatting with Tony in fact.
and of course, even Quinn and Diana were better than expected. Not to skip ahead with my virtually non-existent trip report (and i apologize for encroaching on Barb's) but Diana is very sweet. Even though I wasn't in the Minnie group, she was taking photos where otherwise prohibited just for me since I didn't appear in any myself. She even gave Stitch his own ABD pin. and Quinn.. well, I doubt anyone enjoyed the presence of Stitch more than he did (well, except maybe for 2 mice in particular), but more of that to come.

Another good update. Thanks so much. You really are building my excitement and my trip isn't until December! How did you do on your red eye back to the east coast? I'm torn between the red eye for more time in the parks and a morning flight that would get us back to Baltimore at a decent time.

We're baaack! I woke up at 1 p.m...ugh! It was my own fault; I doped the heck out of myself for the flight and woke up without realizing that it was almost over. Thus I popped another pill just 20 mins. before landing, so Tony drove home while I followed like a zombie.
We lucked into an exit row; they put a family w/baby in the row in front of us which had originally been ours, but either it was really quiet or I was really stoned because I heard very little sound from it. The seats on this plane didn't recline quite as much as the flight out, so my sleep was inhibited a bit but that was made up for by the fact that they turned on channel 9 (the flight communications with the tower), which fascinates me. I knew a big ol' pocket of turbulence was coming up even before it hit because I heard them discussing it. Tony slept right through the rocking and rolling!
As Brad said, he and Tony chatted quite a bit. It's funny because I am a fast walker and always up towards the front, and those two would be towards the back just strolling along leisurely and chatting. They were the smart ones I think...my feet are paying me back for being a commando-style touring person.
I should have the last day done by this evening if not before because I did most of it at the airport. Lordy, I miss the semi-no-wait singles line Soarin' already!

I'm at the airport now, trying to get an earlier flight home. This place is just too blazing hot and better I get home late tonight and enjoy a day off tomorrow rather than fly in at 6 am and go right to work on Tuesday.
I really dislike having my photo taken, I can't explain it. and I try not to take photos with people in them unless I'm really familiar with them, which is why I won't have any photos of anyone else on the tour either.
as far as any changes goes, the only biggie I can think of offhand is that they dropped the tour on the first full day at the end that they did on the dress rehearsal and it doesn't seem they have a viable replacement yet (although what they gave us was great) and I remember Quinn and Diana asking on the bus afterwards if we enjoyed it (big yes) and if it should be included with future groups (big no - well, maybe some said yes, but i think the majority wanted to keep it unique)
I also think F! and the fireworks nights should be reversed, not only because it should be seen closer to the hub the first time someone sees it (although the effects they added to TSI is pretty neat), but also there's a much greater chance of the fireworks being canceled over F! so it will at least offer a plan B in that scenario.

Hey, Brad, how bad is LAX today? I was expecting a zoo, but last night the baggage check and security lines were virtually non-existent. Might be because it was Sun. night, as I always pictured something insane on the scale of O'Hare.

JetBlue...lucky! I sure wish they had more flights out of MCO. We took them to NY on the first leg of our transatlantic trip, and I loved the snack selection and the satellite TV. I was able to watch Animal Cops and the Peoples Court while flying...too cool! Have a safe flight : )

How late did you final dinner last? MY DH and I are considering flying a red eye Saturday night so that he can go to a Ravens home game the next day. He has season tickets and doesn't like to miss his games. I'm trying to convince him to take the red eye Sunday night and watch the game at the ESPN Club Sunday morning. I'll probably win out but I'm doing my research so I can state my case. Thanks again for the trip reports. I really have enjoyed them both!

I didn't wear my watch, but I do know that it ran almost till fireworks time because those who went to watch them had to really hustle to get to DL in time. Technically it's possible to leave the dinner early, but I wouldn't recommend it because you don't want to miss the Disney artist and the group sharing of memories if at all possible. It was a great (although very melancholy) topper. Hubby is already trying to convince me to book this tour again for next year so we can see how it changes (and you know he's gonna have to twist REALLY hard).

Barb,
Great updates again. I really appreciate all the trouble you & Brad have gone through to let us live vicariously through you during your trip. It sounds like a wonderful adventure. I can't wait until December.
I noticed in your update that you live in Celebration....we are contemplating a move closer to Disney ourselves. Has it been all that you ever dreamed of living close by?
inkkognito
04-28-2008, 09:37 PM
Yes, Celebration is awesome! Imagine living in a town full of other Disney nuts and being able to decide on the spur of the moment "I think I want to see Illuminations tonight" and then just hopping in your car and being there in ten minutes. The only downside right now is that we got overrun with investors so many, many properties are in foreclosure. It will be interesting to see how that all shakes out.
Here is an example of the best thing about living here: both Tony and I were going through major Disney withdrawal tonight so he said, "Let's go to Jiko for dinner!" I have 407-WDW-DINE on speed dial, and they were able to get us in. If we squinted, we could pretend it was the Grand Californian. But the sad part was that thirty-some companions weren't there waiting for us, along wiith Diana, Quinn, and the ever-present ABD paddle to follow.

Thanks for answering my question Barb. You must have read my mind. That is what I was telling my husband this past weekend when we were trying to decide what to do.......I said if we lived in Orlando we could just pick up the phone & make reservations at the Flying Fish followed by an evening at Jellyrolls. I really think we will move in the next year. Would you mind terribly if when we get closer to a decision if I PM you with questions?

Day Three, Part Two of Backstage Magic
...
After dinner, we all trooped over to Disneyland for a special surprise. Since we got there after dark, it was a very appropriate experience: a ride on the Haunted Mansion! Our whole group had its own stretching room, and five volunteers (my husband included) got to experience it from a unique perspective. Then we all loaded into doom buggies to enjoy a Disneyland classic
What was the "unique perspective"?

Garett (the Lead CM for Main Street/Adventureland) was kind enough to let Scott back onto the platform just as the train was pulling away.

But I was talking with Michael Broggie who is the head of the Carolwood Pacific Historical Society and he mentioned that they arranged at least 3 more trips to Walt's Barn for upcoming Adventures by Disney trips, I believe he mentioned some dates in June but I really don't know if that is correct or not. Three magic words: Adults Only Areas! DCL is great about enforcing the rules at the adult pool, Cove Cafe, clubs and spa and also on the adult beach. Yes, there will be lots of kidlets at the shows and running around the ship, but no worse than WDW. And it's better than WDW because if you get tired of them, you have those adults-only escape.s

Hi, Tell your husband he will not be overrun by children on a Disney Cruise. My daughter (25 years old) and myself went on a 4 day cruise last August. The staff do a great job keeping the children separate from the adults. We had the second meal seating therefore we hardly saw any kids. When you are at the adult pool you cannot hear or see children! There are plenty of activities just for adult also. It's the best cruise I have ever been on!

Stacia is definitely a character in herself. although I guess you'd have to be. amazing talent though. she did a mad hatter for someone and signed it addressed to him all in a script backwards. and she did it just as fast and smooth as she would have the opposite way (although I guess if I had to think about it, words are just images too).
her princesses are awesome too.
it's an odd thing about disney and their characters.. with a few exceptions, each character can be stylized in a completely different way by different artists. i've probably seen stitch done half a dozen ways.

Hey Brad ... I see you did tours of both Warner and Universal. If you could just do one, which would you recommend? Thanks.
bradk
05-12-2008, 10:48 AM
consider i did both the VIP tour at Universal ($200) and the Deluxe tour at WB ($150)...
I couldn't really suggest one over the other. Universal does have the theme park aspect to it if that factors into it.
Otherwise it's kind of a give or take. Trying to compare the two:
Photography policy: Universal is very liberal with this, WB is far more restrictive but does allow it in some areas (exterior sets which includes ER)
Sets: Universal currently visits the soundstage for Life (or CSI I think) (no photography restrictions and able to walk through all of the sets). WB visited Pushing Daisies, Chuck, Two and a Half Men (sat in audience area only) and they recreated the Central Perk set from Friends (where photos were allowed)
Also exterior sets were visited. Universal does visit Wisteria Lane when not in production (which it was on this past trip) amongst its other streets that are frequently used but not typically decorated. Same with WB (usually photos were allowed except for when filming was going on). Universal also has the exterior sets for the Ghost Whisperer (which used to be the Back to the Future Courthouse area). WB has its own courtyard area which was used for a bunch of things including Gilmore Girls.
In addition, Universal visits the shops (sign, metal, etc), the prop warehouse (which is just overwhelming), maybe the foley stage. WB visits the shops plus scenic design (painting and digital). You also visit their props department but it's not quite as neat (at least what you see).
For lunch, Universal is a little pre-plated item (chosen off a small menu) at a counter service location closed off for the tour. WB deluxe dines at the WB commissary which is normally reserved for talent and VPs and up (it's a full service restaurant, entrees run about $20 or so (although everything is included in cost of the tour)).
WB is definitely the more serious and indulging of the two when it comes to the industry. Because they are a studio only, they only operate Monday - Friday. Universal operates 7 days a week but their touring may vary based on productions (for example, pretty much the only chance you'll have at the foley is not go on a weekend).
but ultimately I'd say it comes down to properties. if you're a Harry Potter, ER, Pushing Daisies, Two and a Half Men, Chuck, etc fan, go with WB. If you're a Life, CSI, Desperate Housewives fan, go with Universal (keeping in mind that you may not get to see what you want). Go with WB especially if you're into Potter though. The first stop is the WB museum which has two floors, the upper is dedicated entirely to Harry Potter and you'll see some amazing props there from each of the films.
and if you're a Pirates of the Caribbean fan, you can't go wrong at either. The films were shot at Universal (both exterior and inside the soundstages), but the metal work was done by WB (they have an item or two on display) and they have quite a few pieces of furniture at the WB props department (one thing I can say about WB props is they're impressive. Their initial collection came from Jack (?) Warner and his wife and were all real antiques that they ended up not wanting, so they donated it to the studio. There's a whole room of props that aren't allowed to go out because they value in the hundreds of thousands each, if not more. One piece is valued at 8-10 million.
by the way, if you had gone to my blog and the first days were missing which include reports and photos from the various studios, I fixed that on Friday I think, so check it out again.

Great question and I don't know either, but does anyone know if you can use

it's a great question.. and i didn't have either so no reason to ask. i would suspect they would be usable since it's a function of the credit card processor which presumably is all the same anyway.
so i would assume yes, but until you get a definitive answer, i wouldn't count on it. you may be able to call MOG directly though.

Does anyone know if you pre purchase the Disney Photopass on line , can that be used for the CD that you buy from ABD?
:confused3

Hi Brad ... Thanks for the detailed answer. I would love to do both, but don't think it is doable. I arrive Sunday night. I was planning on US on Monday. I don't think I have time to do WB on Tuesday. I think I'll let the boss (dear daughter) decide :rotfl: . I personally am leaning towards WB since I love HP, but then again, I love the rides at US Orlando, so it is a tough decision.

Hi again Brad ... Just talking to my daughter and I came up with this plan. On Monday we do the Warner Brother tour. On Tuesday we purchase the Front of the Line Day pass and go to Universal from 9 to 3. We get back to the hotel for a quick change then meet the group at 4. Do you think this is doable?

yeah, that's what Max did (universal before the ABD).
don't get lost comparing USO to USH though. ROTM is tons better at orlando. JPRA is probably better at Orlando too (although it's negligible).

If we had the falling Jeep effect, ours would be soooo much better, but since we don't, ours is only marginally better.
Oh, and RotM is horrible in Hollywood. Just saying.

Unfortunately, no. A few of us tried. It wasn't until we got to the Disneyland resort. I wanted to use it at Mickeys of Glendale, but no. Credit cards are happily taken though. :goodvibes

Prepurchase? Hummmm....I am not sure. We are just now receiving our letter with the ABD photopass ID. It states we need to go to the website within 2 weeks of receiving the letter. It must be a special part just for the ABD pictures??
Oh! I have to tell you something that is new. If you enjoy going around the park and getting pictures! We had a photopass photographer give us the big overview. They now have new overlays! In front of the Haunted Mansion, you can hitchhike and they will add two hitchhiking ghosts. It turns out very cute! Your probably know about holding Tinkerbelle in front of the castle. You can go over by Nemo and they will do an overlay of you looking through a window. They also have a "roving" photographer in Fantasyland and will take you all over the place and take lots of shots. In CA Adventure there is Stitch with an icecream on a bench. It's cute! At Soarin, we pointed in the sky and the characters are soarin above you. They have others. Ask if you see them. They have examples on them to show off.
