I've been training for a half marathon (Hal Higdon's novice level) and I refuse to get on the scale. I found when I do, I just get upset and discouraged. Is this a good idea? Has anyone tried this?

Ok, you are not alone ;)
I completed the C25K program and now I run three days a week, and do 6 miles on a bike (thanks PT! ).
I only get on the scale once a month (the 1st day), I am 33 with 4 kids and it is no longer about a number on the scale. At this stage in my life it is about feeling better and being healthy.
I would love to lose 10pds, but I know too if I never do I am OK with it. I want to live a life full of adventure with my children so health is what it is about for me.
My goal was to complete the C25K and I did, and to run a 10K before years end. So I am 1/2 way there, who needs a scale to tell me I can't do it (just my thought)

I really think that if you know you are being healthy and doing the best you can, a scale is best avoided. Sounds like you are doing great!
I don't have a good scale at home and wasn't using the one at the gym. I wasn't working out a lot and was eating terribly. In Feb I though "I bet I gained a little weight" and got on the scale. I saw a number on there that I never dreamed I'd see. Now I'm on a frantic mission to squeeze into a swimsuit in 6 weeks. So a scale is a good thing every now and then to make sure things don't get out of control.
If you are training for a half marathon.....wow, good luck and don't even worry about the scale. Running burns crazy amounts of calories - you go!
