TT??? Do you find it easy to tow and back up? Ours is a 19ft Palomino Hybrid and I am so glad we decided to go small on our first TT. I don't want to have to depend on DH to tow and set it up all of the time. I don't think I would be comfortable towing and backing up if it were any bigger and I were on my own. What do you all have and how do you feel about it? For all you TT seasoned veterans, I am soooo jealous about the confidence you all have towing and setting up. Give it a few years and I hope to be great at it too :)

PHEW, I thought this was heading towards that "adult time" that was mentioned in Us3's thread!:lmao: Ours is a 32' toyhauler, I drive since DH is in a wheelchair, I find it MUCH easier to tow and backup than our old one which was 26'. I love this trailer, though last night I spent 2 hours searching for the perfect 5ver. The grass is always greener I guess.;)
hehe...we have a long TT! :lmao: No really, it's 33 ft and not too bad to back up. I've always had problems with shorter vehicles :lmao: ...no seriously, when backing, for me they are more difficult to back than a larger trailer or boat.

I can't believe you ladies find it easier to manage a larger TT, I would have thought it was much more difficult. Now I feel like a big chicken, if you both find it easier.. what the heck is wrong with me...heehee :)

we have a 32 footer and it is easier to back than a small trailer, I had to tow small uhaul trailer and that darn thing jack knifed faster than I could turn around to take a look.
It gets easier in time, I also think I can get the trailer in the site quicker on my own than with help from others. :scared1:

The bigger the trailer the slower it responds to your steering. Just like when you pull a snowmobile trailer or something, it turns fast when you turn your wheel. The bigger trailer goes slower so it is easier to react to where your trailer is going. Plus, to me it takes less work to get it right. I was scared too when we first got a TT. That is why we got the 26', but after one season I was ready for the big boys. I was looking at a Fleetwood Formula 38' fifth wheel last night. It was perfect for us. Anyone seen or owned one of these? I think I am worse than my DH when it comes to this.:rotfl:

The problem with a shorter trailer is they respond much faster to steering input that a longer trailer. When I was driving a truck, assuming I had adequate space, backing a 53' trailer always went smoother than a 28'.

Nicole there isn't a perfect one. If you took all of them and put them together it still would be missing this or that. I'm on my 3rd hauler and still not all that happy. I'm actually looking at buying a Starcraft 18SD or 21SD Hybrid Toy Hauler because fuel costs so much and I see us doing less this year because of that. The hybrid really looks good as far as weight and having the right ammenities I want. I looked at some of the pop up toy haulers as well but I really want a bathroom in mine. Another thing I'm checking into is if you're allowed to have a hybrid in the 1500 or 2000 loops. There's been times we've wanted to stay at the fort but they only had partials and we can't do that now.

I had a small pop up and a 21' TT. I definitely liked backing up the TT better than the popup. I also liked backing up the popup better than my waverunner. The smaller the trailer, the worse I was at backing up.:lmao:

Man I did not know where this thread was going. We have been towing a 28' 5er for several years now. Me and the DW take turns driving to FW and the DW dose just fine pulling it.(although I have seen her passing 80 mph more then once) I always back it into the site DW moves all the junk out of my way. But now we are switching to a TT toy hauler (30' to 35' not sure of the exact size of it yet we wont get it until the end of May.)

I have a 16 ft T@B and was scared to death to back it up, but have finally gotten pretty good at it in the daylight. I have gotten it in the exact spot I want it in the driveway on 3 occasions now. :cool1: (Can't push it in the driveway cause of the slope.) Now I just have to learn to get it in that spot without going on the grass, but yes, the shorter the trailer, the harder it is to back up. As far as towing, my little trailer tows like a dream, I hardly know it's back there.
The other day I thought I was in a pickle. I pulled into a local restaurant for lunch before heading out camping and parked out in the back of the parking lot in two spots. As I was leaving the lot was full, pulled forward and was going to loop around and leave. Found out there was NOWHERE to go in a circle, one way in, one way out. Fortunately, a hole opened up where two cars in front of each other left their spots and by inching forward and back and help from folks making sure I didn't clip anyone, I got her out of there, but was worried I was going to have to disconnect it, 180 it and pull the truck around :scared1:

Ha, got you all beat, I had a 36' fifth wheel and I now have a 38' motorhome. I win. :cool1: For now.
Seriously, there was a question about pulling as well as parking. I have found, in my vast experience and knowledge, that it is less stressful to pull a fifth wheel then a trailer. The tugging and bouncing on a regular hitch is much more noticeable then on a fifth wheel hitch. And a motorhome is even better, yet.

Ami you think I'd like a hybrid? I'm going to Ocala tomorrow to look at the Starcraft 18sd and 21sd Toy Hauler models. With fuel getting more expensive a 3k pound camper vs my 8k pound 5'er is looking pretty darn good. One good thing about camping even at the fort is that no matter if you're on a cot under a tarp or in a Prevost nobody really cares. I was looking at some places I'd like to visit this summer and these things seem like a good choice.

That's what we want too, a Hybrid. Especially w/ the potential of taking 4 kids along (our boys & the step-kids). But right now, we're just tenters. Have to upgrade the Saturn Vue to get to a trailer, & still paying on the Vue. Maybe next year, after DH gets a new to him car. I can dream, can't I?:cloud9:

I really do like my Pup. It isn't difficult to tow. The set up is a bit more involved than a TT, but not a major issue. Some of the newer models even have automatic crank up. Once it is all set up, it really is spacious! We looked at all sorts of things before we decided on ours, and realized that we could sleep more in a Pup, than in some TTs.
Since we love to camp at the Fort, and WDW is over 700 miles away, we decided easier towing and more set up worked best for us. We have a cassette potty/shower combo; small kitchen area; outside cooking area; outside shower; 2 king beds; double bed; twin bed. I couldn't be happier!
It IS a personal decision, and really depends on your needs, but IMO, a Pup is perfect! A toy hauler Pup could be even better!

We have a 23' TT. We have had it for almost 2 years in August. I can drive it (still a little on the tense side) and have only backed it up 3 times. Two of those times were into spots where there was nobody in the spot directly across so I was able to pull into those empty spaces and almost pull directly back. The 3rd time I did it was into my driveway that has quite the hill and on a partial cul-de-sac. Trying to get the right angle into the driveway was tough.
I am still not fully confident in my backing up skills - more practice is obviously needed and DH doesn't really have the patience to teach me.

The thing about the hybrid is it has a full bath which I like. It doesn't look like a ton of work to get the beds extended out either. The other thing about this model is that the 4 wheelers or whatever you're carrying is outside and the gas fumes won't be in the trailer. I'll know tomorrow after seeing the models I'm looking at whether it's for me or not. I'm in the I want to do more and have less mode. Unfortunately so are a lot of people and that's why the economy is in a slump because everybody is holding out on major purchases right now. I saw a Chevy commercial this morning with a $5,200 rebate on Silverado's. Reminds me how after 911 everybody was discounting stuff or financing stuff to get buyers in the door.

Tandem axle trailers are easier than single axle to backup also and a fifth wheel is easier than a bumper pull trailer. Our TT is 30ft and our old PUP was only about 8 feet closed up.

We have a 30 ft TT and I have been lucky enough that I have not even had to ride in the tow vehicle. We've only been camping once since we got it, and I towed the kids in the mini-van.
DH has not had a problem backing it in at the campground or, beside our home, which is a fairly difficult thing given ditches and space.
We're moving into our seasonal campground this weekend, taking Friday and Monday off! Woo-Hoo!:cool1:
He'll have it all set up and stocked tomorrow and Thursday. Yeah for me!
I do admire anyone that can back into campground space. But, if DH wasn't around, it means enough to me that I would learn how to do it.

We were in the 2000 loop in early December and we backed up to the service road. After the first day we were almost the only ones on our side. There were several large TT there and one MH. We saw a site with a lone 2 person tent and nothing else on up to a MH. I would think as long as you can fit into the site and don't need the hook-up...why not.

This may only be true with my Ford but weight really dose not affect my mpg as bad as wind resistance. With a pop up not much wind resistance but with a hybrid you would still get wind resistance so I would thank. Plus with the loss of trading in your new 5er would you save anything:confused3 Now if you just want a new trailer then go for it. I had the same thoughts on geting a hybrid for awhile but then decided the heck with I want room. Have fun shopping we always do. (until we get the payment book :scared: )

I've just got my little old PUP, a 93 Coleman Rio Grande which is plenty big enough since many of my trips are solo or with just one other person. If I go with a group we use my friends 32' Bunkhouse. I tow with my 99 GMC Sierria 1500 5.3L which has highway gearing (under 2000 rpm at 70 mph). I get 17 mpg city, 20 mpg highway and 17 mpg towing. Not bad for a truck with 197,000 miles which has never given me any trouble. The best part is they're both paid for and have been for some time now.
