I just got back from vacation and I am rested, invigorated and ready to go!

I decided to start with a bang, so heres this years Thunder

http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2008/04/13/vo.ky.thunder.over.louisville.wave

turn the sound down, its not right.

I havent decided my exact approach this time, I am just going to get started exercising again first.

I had to go back to work today, after vacation. It bites! I will never be one of those people who has to work. I would be perfectly happy retired!

I tried one of the new south beach hot sandwiches today. It was good. I also tried the new weight watchers yogurt. It was white chocolate cheesecake. It was nasty. Sooo sweet. Anyway, I just want to try new stuff.

I had no time for exercise today, oops. Great start, I know.

I did start my trip report from my vacation. http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1789675

Its not done yet, but I am working on it.

So, how is the new approach going? And what have you decided is your plan?

I have come up w/ an exercise plan, but am still way out in left field w/ my food. Maybe we can come up w/ some ideas together and/or for each other?

Hope things are going well. I know that going back to work STINKS!!

Off to finish reading your TR! Have a good weekend!

Hey Amber! I cant believe I didnt fall to the next page.:lmao:

I am finally back, tho I havent had a chance to finish the trip report yet. I will get back to it soon tho.

I had to post because I finally HAVE A PLAN!:rotfl:

My son decided to try the couch to 5k plan, and I am going to try also. I am saying straight up tho, that I dont really plan to become a "real" runner. I plan to get to a point in the interval plan where I feel I am getting a good workout, and then try to stick with it.

Ok, remember I am a ridiculous planner type person. We looked the plan up on the web and the first week is walk five minutes, then alternate 60 secs running and 90 secs walking. Well, while googling it we saw this info for a "podcast" for it. Each week has its own podcast (of course). So we went to itunes and Kev downloaded it on his ipod. (hes doing this first, I am starting next week, in some fashion) right now I am warming up by using the stairmachine.

Ok anyway, on the podcast, it has music, and tells you when you have to walk, and when to run. You dont have to use a stopwatch! Cool right?

UNfortunately the music is this weird techno-pop stuff. Kev couldnt listen to it for 30 mins at all. Its good for tempo, but yuck! I tried to listen and I dont blame him.

So more research is needed. I think I have it figured out now. Probably all you younger folks know this ipod stuff , but I am old, so bear with me!

Anyway, I found out you make a playlist of the music you want to run to on itunes. /some slow, some fast. Then you right click on each song go to "get info" then options, and set stop time. This way you can stop the song, and know when to change your pace.

I have Kev working on it now!:lmao:

OK wish me luck. Guys I am in such bad shape, I really need a mini-miracle here to get going.

Hello! Glad to see you are back! I saw something on TV the other day about the KY Derby. I said to DH, "SHOOT, We missed it again!" My how time flies! I didn't realize a whole year had gone by already :confused3 Of course, DH said what do we want to watch a horse race for? I said, it's not the race, but the party on the infield that I wanted to go to :lmao: :thumbsup2

Glad you have a plan again! I am working on the C25K also. The only problem is that after working hard in the yard all weekend, I have basically taken the WHOLE week off from exercising :rolleyes1 Either this weekend or Tuesday I plan to pick it back up. I just use the treadmill at the gym which has the benefit of telling me how much time, how fast, and how many calories burned. When I was doing it at home I used the stopwatch though. I like the music timing thing better though :thumbsup2 Let me know how that works for you.

Two things that I read that helped me... 1) run slower than you think you should and 2) do more of a shuffle step to begin with rather than a full on run.

Good luck :wizard: :wizard: You can do this!!

lindalinda
05-08-2008, 08:20 PM
ok, I got the playlist set up on my nano! It was really pretty easy.:goodvibes I have everything from Jimmy Buffett to Barenaked ladies to the Clash on it! Of course it will be better when I have longer intervals. With 60 and 90 seconds, it does get choppy! But, hey, I wont have to look at a stopwatch, just switch it up when the song changes.

Anyway, I am a little behind still, but I did get some stuff done today.

I have one big issue tho. the guy who hit my car, and wanted tp pay cash to fix it, well, he hasnt sent the check yet! I am stressing. I thought I was really being nice not to put it on insurance. It was 425$ and I dont think that was too bad, for 2 dents and a big scratch. They have to repaint the door and blend it with the quarterpanel. I am calling him tomorrow and asking whats up. I really dread it.

Ok, today food was ok. I got up late and forgot to eat breakfast. Then I was running errands and didnt get home until 2:30. Then I had a sandwich. For dinner we had garlic chicken and for dessert a slice of sugar-free angel food cake. I think I will have a slim-a-bear ice cream for snack.

I also did the stairmachine.

Kev is running right now. We are trying to get him back in shape! He has this girlfriend, whose family thinks I starve him. So they are constantly asking him to eat there and sending all this food home. It has made him a little pudgy. (not really)! Anyway, he thinks so, and could certainly use some exercise. Trying to change his snacking habits too.

lots to do!

I actually started today, sort of. I know it will take me longer than most, but I feel good about at least starting. I couldnt run in all the intervals tho, I made it about halfway thru, then just walked. The ipod thing worked like a charm tho! I am still gonna do the stairmachine tonite. Tomorrow there is no time to do anything much, and sunday I am going to brunch with my dad before work.

Todays food was cheerios, leftover chicken for lunch, baked sphaghetti fopr dinner and I just had some angelfood cake. Unfortunately I heard a noise downstairs and it was the dog eating the angelfood cake! Curses!

Anyway, later

Good job starting the C25K plan! I know what you mean about it taking longer to really get started. This time it has taken me awhile due to me being lazy, but last time my body just wasn't ready for the running. Keep at it and you'll get it down soon!! :yay:

Looks like you're getting back into the swing of things. :thumbsup2 Good job!

Keep up the good work! :cheer2:

Thans for the mothers day wishes ! I had a nice day. Of course, I had to work past midnite on saturday, and kevin woke me up at 8 am on sunday and said "mom, its raining, are we going to be able to golf today?" Which I said "for gods sake kevin thats in 5 hours! go back to bed!"

Anyway, we didnt get to golf, it was raining all day, but we went to the mothers day brunch at the club with my dad. It was really nice.

Then I had to work. Oh well.

I havent had time to run again yet, the plan is tomorrow evening. Hopefully that will work out. I am trying for 3 times a week. So that would be tuesday, thursday and friday. I know, 2 days in a row, but thats the best I can do with my stupid schedule.

Gotta sleep now, nite all

Wow, I have been doing really great....not!:lmao:

Oh well, heres the story of the last 7 days. Its a doozy.

Tuesday, June 3rd. work 7am-3pm. There are major thunderstorms coming thru. As luck would have it, I am working Arrival Radar. That means I work the planes that are coming in , I get them to the final and line them up and clear them for the approach, then I switch them to the tower and they clear them to land. Just a little ATC lesson there. Anyway, what airplanes won't do is land during a thunderstorm. You may think you have, but you really have probably just flown close to a thunderstorm, and thru some rain, but not the really bad stuff. Anyway, what I had was a bunch of airplanes flying around dodging each other and storms. Anyway, back to my story. I got a ache in my neck and was really wiped out after. I thought it was from stress, that wouldn't be unusual. I told several co-workers about my neck pain. OK, call it whining.

Wednesday, June 4th. work 6am-2pm, in theory. Legendary

This day started almost exactly the same, including me whining about my neck hurting. More thunderstorms, working Arrival again, but it wasnt as bad this day, the storms timing was better. When I get a break a little before 11am, I decide to eat lunch. Chicken and gunky rice (I have given you guys this recipe, its yummy). After I eat I am watching the tv in the break room. Obama speech so I am listening. The tv is bouncing. The picture I mean. I ask a co-worker, and he concurs the picture is bouncing. I then say its making the whole room move. He says its stopped and it should be ok. But to me everything starts spinning. I try to shake it off, pretend I'm ok. I walk to the hall. I suddenly get really really hot. I think maybe its a hot flash???? Now I am spinning and sweating. I go into the bathroom and a girl in there asks if I'm ok. I say no. She thinks its a flash too, and says "you know they have medicine for that" .sweetheart. Its ok, shes young, doesnt know better. I tell her to tell the dupe I wont be out for a while. I think it will go away in a few minutes, maybe 20? No idea. New to me, and very embarrassing. So I go to sit down (visual there for you :lmao: ) and had to do the quick swivel twist and power puke! Now I am drenched in sweat, the room is spinning and I am puking my guts out. So much for the flash theory. People kept coming in and asking me if they can do anything. Nope. I puked for hours on end. The manager sent the secretary in to try to get me to leave. Thing is, I couldnt move. If I opened my eyes and moved at all I puked over and over. I couldnt get in a car! Too sick. Then the chills started. Bone racking chills. I was actually rattling. On the bathroom floor. At some point someone came and gave me some towels to lay my head on and some 7up, which I couldnt drink. After about 3 hours I was able to stop puking. So I tried to move to the breakroom couch to lay down. One of the guys helped me, i couldnt walk by myself. Earlier someone had called my mom to go pick up kevin after school. Eventually, I called kevin and told him to tell mom to come get me after she got him. (my mom doesnt have a cell phone, so this happened over a period of hours. She got there around 5 (3 hours after I got off work.) Basically, I was sick at work for 6 hours. I got home and slept, and woke up puking again later that night.

Thursday June 5th

Fever and chills. I sipped some orange soda at times.

Friday June 6th

When I woke up, I felt much better, but weak. I decided to eat, and had some dry cheerios ( a few spoonfuls) several times during the day. No bad effects, so i decide I am better. I can only sit up for a few minutes at a time tho. then I would collapse.

Saturday June 7th

I call in sick to work. I feel better, but still cant get vertical. Very dizzy when I try to walk. I call my boss and ask for sunday and monday off, i already had tuesday and wednesday. Then I dont have to work until saturday. I feel better about that. But I am not getting much done

Sunday June 8th

Trying to get up and do laundry, etc. Keep collapsing, but I decide I havent had enough food. I eat normal meals to get my strength back.

Monday june 9th

I have to go get my car from work (its still there). My mom comes to drive me. I drive it home and it is quite scary. When I move my head, everything seems like it is in slow motion. Not spinning, but way off. By the time I get home I have been vetical for about 4 hours, and am exhausted and collapse in bed. At night my neck pain is really bad.

tuesday june 10th (today)

I have kevin drive me to the dr office. I forgot to mention that while I was sick on thursday he got his drivers license. Yeah! Anyway, they put me thru a bunch of tests (to make sure I didnt have a stroke) and they decided I had inflammation of the inner ear. It should be better on its own in about 2 weeks! Yuck thats too long. I figure I have had it for a week already though, so maybe one more week, maybe less. They gave me some medicine to stop the spinning. They figure the virus I had triggered it somehow. And they took blood! I avoid this whenever possible. I have no veins. None. I make the blood takers cry. Me too. Anyway, they say, oh travis is good, dont worry. I ask for the butterfly things, to make it easier. So travis comes in and says he has a 99.9% efficiency for getting it on the first time. Said he was a once shot guy. Anyway he checks my arms for awhile. Does the rubber bandy thing around them. Nothing there . Surprise! He tries to get my hand, but it bursts. He says I blew his stats. He finally gets it tho on my ring finger knuckle. They think I am coming back for a cholesterol check!:rotfl: Anyway, I feel ok, but am not getting much done, and exercise is nonexistent of course.

Sorry about the freakishly long post.

Yeah Amber, I know. Unfortunately they took my blood and found stuff wrong again. Now I have to get more tests done next week. They are going to tell me I have diabetes I am pretty sure. Now I get to feel guilty about being fat and making myself ill. I really need that let me tell you. My liver enzymes are elevated too. Since I havent been shooting up heroin, that s going to be "youre a fatty" related too.

Life sucks

Hey, Linda. Glad your first day back went well.

Hope your test go well this week :wizard: :wizard: Try not to worry or blame yourself. You can only do so much and health issues are a part of life. If they do say that you are a diabetic there is not any amount of blame or shame that will change it. You will just have to pick up from there and do the best that you can to manage it. I think that a diagnosis is never good news, But it makes it more clear that you HAVE to take care of yourself or else face worse consequences.

You are not "a fatty"! That kind of negative self talk is what keeps us all heavier than we can be.

Stick with the positive outlook. It is all going to be ok

Take care of yourself and have a good week :hippie:

lindalinda
06-20-2008, 08:36 PM
Ok, I have been giving them lots of blood and they are taking lots of tests. Yes, I am diabetic. I wont go into all the details, but I am on meds and I having a meter and I am figuring it out. They are still pondering my liver stuff, but I think its easy to surmise that its because I'm fat. It seems after they give me every test known to man and eliminate them all, they will then say thats why. I find that a little irritating.

Anyway, I think I will start doing my food and stuff again

I had a fasting blood sugar, so I didnt have breakfast until late.

Fasting blood sugar was 166

B- scrambled eggs and low-fat bluberry muffin

L-tomato soup and whole wheat toast

Blood sugar tested at the pharmacy-349!!!! But it was soon after lunch so I dont think its valid, supposed to be 2 hours later

tested before dinner- 175

D- buffalo chicken strips, green beans, and co-jack cheese

tested 2 hours later- 181 (still bad, but not as bad as 349)

I will have some kind of snack later, I havent decide what

I took the meds tonight for the first time, so hopefully they will work fast, I will feel better, and have some energy to exercise, lose weight, my blood pressure will go down and I will live happily ever after.

I had a pretty good day. I am still figuring things out.

fasting BS-150
B- 1 scrambled egg and lowfat blueberry muffin

BS after 183

L- tomato soup and whole wheat toast

S- salad

pre-dinner BS- 151

D- chicken and spinach pasta and a V8

post dinner BS-177

S- grapes and cheddar cheese

So I didnt have any of those really high ones like yesterday, so I think it was just because it was at the wrong time. So it looks like I am about 50 points up. Should be around 100 fasting and 140 or so 2 hours after a meal.

Things seemed kind of wacky today. The medicine makes me sick to my stomach, so I had a hard day. For some reason, even though my tests were ok yesterday, my BS went up overnight. How???? I dont get it at all. My last test yesterday was 151 and when I woke up it was 165. I still think it may have something to do with the shift work. All the other days I was testing at 9ish and then again at 11ish. Today I had to test at 5am and then again at 8 am.

todays stuff

fasting (kind of...it was only 6 hrs) 165

B- high protein slim fast

after meal test 164 it went down ?????huh

S- hard boiled egg and V8

L- ham sandwich, grapes and cheddar

before dinner test - 136

D- baked pork chops (OMG< so good) and green beans

after dinner-160

I dont know what these results mean, I'm guessing that I am still a mess!

anyway, I took my medicine early since I have to get up at 4am. Last night I didnt take it until around 11pm and then got up at 5. I tell you I felt yucky today though, so I hope it gets better.

No exercise today, too tired and well, famished when I got home.

I am gonna try to get to sleep by at least 10 tonight.

todays info

I got up at 4am, this is a factor as I found out

fasting BS-170!!?? again, the highest is the early morning, which should
be lowest

I decided not to eat before work, I usually dont since its so early, but yesterday I did just because they say not to skip meals. Of course I'm not skipping, just delaying.

I had my first break at 7 or so, and had a piece of wheat toast and a hard boiled egg.

After breakfast BS- 154 it went down again ...weird

L- ham sandwich , cheddar cheese, tried grapes but they were sour!

S- high protein slim fast

pre-dinner BS-139

D- leftover pork chop and green beans

post dinner BS-166

the highest BS today was fasting again. same as yesterday.

So I googled "does lack of sleep effect blood sugar"

As it turns out, yes it does! Lots of articles saying lack of sleep raises blood glucose levels! Testimonials about it too! Something about liver processing stuff. And since I have liver issues too I cant help but think it is related as well. So I feel that I have been right all along about this shift work messing with my metabolism. What to do? I dont have that answer right now, I cant do anything about my schedule (for 32 months and 27 days anyway). There is a lot of info about magnesium helping, so I think I will try a supplement of that.

I did get a little exercise in, stairmachine. I will definitely get some in tomorrow since I am off work.

after lunch BS- 157

S- high protein slimfast

pre-dinner BS- 156

D- leftover porkchop and green beans

after dinner BS-159

S- sugar free fudgsicle

I ran out of fruit and salad so I went to the grocery today

I also did the stairmachine

things seem to be getting worse not better, I am clueless why.

L- turkey sandwich on whole wheat

pre-dinner BS-153

D-high protein slim fast ( I was out at the movies)

post dinner-173

not very healthy today, but I was gone almost all day, after the ultrasound, I took Kev for a haircut, then went and saw WALL*E which I liked, its cute. then I ran home for a sec and then went to see Get Smart with a friend of mine, it was very funny! I just got home and am trying to get some laundry done before I fall asleep.

Hey, Linda. Sorry to hear that you did get the diabetes diagnosis and that the blood sugar has been so out of whack. As I was reading I was going to tell you that I remember my mom saying that her blood sugar is affected by lack of sleep, but I see you figured that one out. Not sure what you can do about it though since you have to work those crazy shifts regardless.

I think the only advice that I have for right now is just the same ol' same ol' to try to get more fruits and veggies in your diet... probably mostly veggies since fruits have natural sugars. And just hang in there! You'll get it under control soon. I know you can! :wizard:

It doesnt have a fasting average, but for 7 days it is 142, but has gone down the last couple of days. I am looking for less than 100 fasting, around 100 to 110 pre meals and less than 140 after meals.

Weird day. This was a quick turn day with very early shift.

fasting BS-120

breakfast- hard boiled egg and wheat toast

After breakfast BS- 124

Lunch- buffalo chicken breast

S- cheese and grapes

took a nap when I got home, this seems to raise BS

pre- dinner BS- 149

dinner- tomato soup and a couple of strips of bacon, 3 or 4 cips

post-dinner BS- 141

S-sugar free fudgesicle

I am not buying those glucerna shakes anymore. They are not filling at all and I dont think they help lower BS at all either. Besides they are expensive.

nite another 4 am wake-up

Hey, Linda. Hang in there and keep plugging along. I know that exercise is supposed to help A Lot. I also understand that it is tough to get moving again. Here's a kick to get you started :cool1: (Now will somebody please kick me!!)

Hi Amber! I have been exercising a little, but only walking or doing the stairmachine. I am not up for running yet. It is at least partly due to the heat.

I spent all day today and most of yesterday helpinf Kevin clean his room and doing about 15 loads of laundry. We emptied his entire room, and washed all his clothes, sorted what fit and didnt for charity, and are replacing only the good stuff. I am still deep in laundry.

I decided to test lots of extra times to get some extra info on what I am eating and how it is effecting my BS. I am only doing it yesterday and today cuz tose strips are expensive. Really, they say diabetes is the most dangerous health problem today, and yet the tools for aiding in the control of it are probably too expensive for a good part of the population to be able to afford. This offends me greatly. anyway.

fasting BS- 119

Breakfast- one egg

BS after breakfast 45 mins- 141

lunch- tuna cassrole made with whole wheat noodles

Bs one hour after lunch-150

BS 2 hours after lunch-112...this was my pre-dinner reading as well

dinner- baked chicken breast and salad

post-dinner BS-125 (2 hours after)

doing this messed up my averages a little bit, since the others have just been 2 hours after eating, but I wanted to see how high it was earlier too.

I am doing the stairmachine tonight

Oh, and I am having a fudgsicle later too.

Ok, I don't know where I"ve been, but apperantly I haven't been by your journal for QUITE A WHILE!!!
I'm sorry. :guilty:
I just got all caught up from the last month. Diabetes huh? I know absolutely nothing about diabetes other than it's pretty serious and you have to really watch what you eat. My friend "H" is diabetic and has been for a long time. She has a monitor/pump attached to her at all times. I'm not really sure how it works, and she tried explaining it to me, but then we decided there was a reason I wasn't a doctor and we went on to a different subject. :confused3
I'm really sorry the month of June wasn't good for you, but it looks like you are on the right path now. The numbers you posted look good, but again, I don't know what they should be. You are watching what you are eating and you are getting some exersize in...good for you! I also like how you are doing extra test to get more info...I think that's pretty smart linda. But of course, you're a smart person so why should we be surprised by you going the extra mile to get more info!! :thumbsup2
Oh, and please don't refer to yourself or your weight as "fatty". I haven't met you, and I may never meet you, but you are one of the friendliest, funniest, smartest people I"ve "met". It doesn't matter what the scale says, you are still beautiful inside and out. Don't sell yourself short! (that wasn't a lecture, just how I feel)

Take care of you, and I'm sorry I haven't been around here...I promise to do better!!

slowly getting better.

Short story. The new guy who I just finished training at work is 26 years old. He has a 2 year old son. Yesterday his son and wife were at the apartment pool. I dont know what happened, but my co-worker got a call at work that his son almost drowned. He left work about an hour before I got off. As I was driving home it was on the radio "toddler pulled unconscious from apartment pool, lifeguard revives with CPR. child taken to Kosair childrens hosp, condition unknown". He had to stay overnight for observation, but we finally got news that he is gonna be ok this morning. After he came to, he was out ot it for a while, but by this morning he was coloring, talking and laughing. I think they had him coloring to check his motor skills. anyway, thank god. Now, I have not verbalized this at all, but I am gonna say it here where no one will hear it anyway.

WTH? Where was his wife? How did this happen? Seriously, who doesnt know you have to watch a 2 year old every second at a pool? I know it was an accident, but no, I dont get it. I would be willing to bet that she had the 6 year old daughter watch him "for just a sec" while she did something.

Sorry, vent over. I know it was an accident and I would never ever say that to anyone that might be effected by it. anyway, sorry

Just a quick check in.

reference my rant above: The mom was sitting on the side of the pool chatting with a friend, the baby was in one of the round tubes. The tube flipped over and he sank. The lifeguard saw him and so did the mom, they both jumped in and got him out. They arent sure how long he was under, but he is ok. The lifeguard (who was an adult btw) has offered to give him swimming lessons.

Everything else is going ok. I am doing pretty good on the diet. My numbers are almost all good now. Slightly higher on monday and tuesday, which I think is lack of sleep. I got a little Poed at the dr tho. I asked to be sent test results from all those tests and he said he did. I got a blank form in the mail that said come to the office. Now, I dont need to go to the office, I want the freakin results! I finally asked him to tell me my A1C which he told me on the phone (8.1, which is bad) I need that to be able to see my progress when I get tested again. He never gave me any other results.

My BP meds went way up in price also, so I asked him to prescribe me something that is on my insurance. He gave me a list of 4, only one was on my insurance and it raises blood glucose levels! Why would he prescribe me that?! Anyway, I think I am going shopping for an endocrinologist. I want someone more professional.

slowly going down.

The results are clearly effected by sleep. By my second day off the numbers are at completely normal levels. As my work weekgoes on, the numbers go up depending on my sleep.

I am down 12 lbs so far.

Hey, Linda! Sorry I haven't been over here to check in for quite awhile. I just haven't felt like "socializing" much lately.

I am glad to see that your numbers are coming down. I have heard from my mom that what you are experiencing with the sleep/stress making your numbers high is pretty normal. Meaning that it affects everyone that way. Not that it helps much :confused3 Your numbers seem manageable now though - from an uneducated onlooker's perspective :thumbsup2

I just have to comment on the near drowning thing. You came back and said that the mom was on the OUTSIDE of the pool while her 2 year old was IN the pool!! I don't have kids, but I don't think that 2 year olds can or should swim by themselves in a pool!! That is just not being smart if you ask me.

I actually read something earlier this year that was talking about how Most drowning accidents result from carelessness or not paying attention. I know what you mean about not ever wanting to say things like that to those affected by a drowning. But I wish that more people were aware of that Before it occurs. It only takes moments for something horrible to happen.

K, off my soapbox.

Have a GREAT week!!

Hey, Linda! Glad to see that you are continuing to lose weight. Slowly is the right way to do it, so remember that when it seems too slow. :goodvibes

Also good to see the blood sugar numbers are getting better. I have always heard that losing even a little weight can make a big difference. So, it looks like you are on the right track to being able to keep it managed. :cool1:

Now that I am back from vacation, I'm really going to try to do better at eating right and exercising. The only way that I can do that consistently is to post about it - it is what works for me. So, I should be around more often now. I'll do my best to be a better encourager for you, so remind me that I said all of this if I start to drop off the radar again, please :thumbsup2

Hope you have a good week!!

So, did you lose any weight this week? :goodvibes

What is your eating plan like these days? Just trying to limit portions or anything specific?

Also, have you found any time to exercise?

Just wondering what's up besides the blood sugar numbers. I know that is a very important thing, but I'm sure you are doing things to get them down.

Hope things are going well for you this weekend! :cheer2:
