What type do you use?
We went in November 2006 and bought one at Walgreens in Orlando before going into Disney. It's the kind that has a place for the character's signature on one side - and a photo of them on the other. I found that we ran out of pages early on.
We have two sons: one is 5 and the other is 8 months. I want to get each of them their own book even though the 8 month old won't know. I don't want to hear about it in the future!
I also plan to get retractable sharpies.

On our last trip, I made my own. I used the small size memory books from Michael's Craft Store. I put Buzz on the front of one and Mickey on the other (favorites of each boy DS3 and DS7). I personalized them with the boys names and the date of our trip. There were more pages in these books than the autograph books sold at Disney. My only complaint, was that the memory books were larger than the others, so they took up more room in the boys' fanny packs.

Call us cheap if you'd like, but with the exception of the oldest who's had more visits to Disney than the others (we used to live 10 min. from DL when he was little) - we've purchased one book per child (at DL or WDW), and simply reuse them for multiple trips. At the end of a trip, we'll take a colored marker and make a huge line down the right side of the next page so that you can see it when the book is closed as a "chapter divider" - and then the next trip they start fresh from that point, with the dates of the trip written in on the first blank page of the "new chapter". We do like to only have the sigs on the right page, and then put photos on the left page as a reminder.
It's kept the "clutter factor" down a bit at home, but it's been very fun as they go back through them years later to bring back the memories. They've never complained about not getting a new book every time. When the book fills up, a new one will be purchased on the next trip if they'd like one. On our last trip this past Sep., my oldest decided he didn't want to do autographs, so only the 2 younger ones did it - and my middle child needed a new book, so we got him one. DD's is still fine for another trip or two.
