Hey!
The "educational trip" requests were approved for both girls! Actually, our district is still pretty nice about trips. Only 5 days will be approved, but, basically, if you fill out the very short form, you will be approved for excused vacation. DD13 will get more work, of course, and will have to check online for additional assignments once in a while. DD8 will have to do a trip journal and share it with the principal after the trip! So watch what you say/do to Hannah ... it might go in the report to the principal :lmao: !
hmmm....we haven't even told the schools yet (told the teachers at conference last week)....I don't know what the 'rules' are - looked in the county handbook and didn't see anything. Should I be worried??? :confused3

So my Mom met up with a bunch of strangers from the Internet. One of them was dressed up as a banana and all the grown ups thought it was really funny except for a few Dads who were confused and looking suspiciously at their wives who were laughing as if they knew these other people. A bunch of the kids just ran naked around on Deck 6 while the Moms had a little too much to drink. They talked a lot about bananas, bats and cults...... We all took jeeps in Cozumel over to a bar called Coconuts. I don't know why it is called Coconuts because I didn't see any....

Then I had dinner by myself at a Mexican restaurant by the hotel (hate having no one to talk to at dinner). Now I am sitting here on the DIS . . . I told Amy I am one boring dude.

I hate eating by myself when I am on the road. Usually I will just get some kind of take out and eat in the room. (real healthy I know)

Here's the skinny on the sangria:
(from a TR)
"I did enjoy that we all had Sangria to share but I was a bit disappointed in it overall. First they did charge me 2X the corkage fee because it was two separate bottles in order to have enough for everyone. Second, I had gotten the idea from a DIS TR and the poster had said that the Sangria was very good with lots of cherries and fruit. Ours had NO cherries, just bits of apple and orange zest. I did not taste any sprite in it either. I think they only added some juice so it was not very sweet or bubbly. Also when Renato served it he confused my tablemates when he did not explain that someone at the table provided it. He started trying to explain about the corkage fee and ended up making people think that it was $13.00 per glass-Yikes!"

Think I'll pass on trying to do that!

Have you guys heard Little Big Town? They came to our local fair - some friends (going on the cruise) invited us to go with them. I am soooo glad they did. I'm not a huge country fan, but I really like this group - so much that I bought one of their cd's - and I've actually listened to it over and over and over (unusual for me). Their story is facinating, too - they have a website.

:grouphug:

Its very rough - mom passed Jan 8 2005 and I have been feeling down the last few days thnking about how the holidays were that year. My dad, who I have never get emotional, was a wreck...I think we were more concerned about him then how WE felt.

I am still fairly young and have only lost a few people that I was close to....my grandfather died in the house that was in the family for years...my mom passed in the same house, same room...(both of cancer). My other GF (actually a step-grandfather- but raised as a GF) died of a heart attack while I was away at college - the odd thing was, I "felt" him go...the last week of school before the summer, I felt really depressed one day and couldn't figure out why...my mom said he passed that day (she didn't tell me until she came to get me from school...all I could say was - "I know...")

I only have one grandparent still alove, shes in her 80's...but HER mother is still alive and very active. Which reminds me, DW!! We need to call her and get her pot pie recipe asap...I've already lost mom's mac&cheese recipe and can't afford to lose the Pot Pie, no way. No crust involved...

the cheapest bottle of wine is around $24, beer I can't remember not more than $5 for Bud I don't think. The mixed special drinks at dinner are $4.95 (the ones on the menu)

The wine package, I priced it, is a pretty good deal overall.

And I want to know why those folks over on the "Pet Peeves" thread don't understand that. More than 2 had said "kids running and screaming in the halls." For Pete's sake it's a Disney Cruise, they are excited, they are children. Excited little children streaking the halls and squealing with joy should not be an irritant!

Are you sure that they were not talking about adults like me running and screaming in the halls. I usually am taking out some of the kids because they are so slow! :moped:

I was thinking of buying a few bottles to take back home with us but it is just so $$$$. I had a few glasses last time but at $10 a glass it adds up. I am not a huge drinker and DH does not drink at all so I figure that I will probably do better just ordering by the glass when I want something.

I am not really a huge wine lover but I do really enjoy sparkling wines/champagne.

$25.57 per bottle for the classic package. 10 of the 16 wines cost more than $25.57 per bottle individually (6 cost less). If you order only certain wines you could end up paying more for the package than by the bottle.

$39.29 per bottle for the premium package. 8 of the 16 wines cost more than the $39.29 per bottle for the premium package (8 costs less). Once again it might pay to see if it would be cheaper for you by the bottle depending on your selections.

I need to head out really soon. I have a hair cut this morning.
Men - Warning - Women talk ahead!!

Speaking of hair cuts...I have a dilemma - I'd been letting my hair grow out because I wanted a new style, not sure what, but something different and I knew the best way was to let it grow out first.
SO...2.5 weeks ago, I go to a reputable salon and pay for a haircut from the 2nd most expensive cutter - 'scuse me, stylist - there. Well, you know what's coming...I DON'T LIKE IT!!! It's not horrible, but something is just not right about it - plus it's more maintenance than I want - I'm a wash and go girl - this I have to use a straightening serum, and use a round brush and dryer on!! So, what am I to do???? I want to get it cut again (appointment with her on the 1st for trim/color), but I don't want to wait that long because I'm not liking it now and I don't want to wait too long to see if I like the next cut. SO...what would you do?? Go to another salon? There are 2 others that I'm considering going to. I would like an appointment for next week (to give time for the next disaster to grow out!)...or should I let this disaster continue to grow and let this girl try again? Only problem I see is there will be no time to correct it if I don't like it the 2nd time around. Hmmm...what to do???? Suggestions welcome!

The past two days when I pick up Samantha there is this little boy wanting desperately to give her a hug. He is new this year and really is quite mean. He is always in some sort of time out but he can be very sweet as well. Both days he just looked so dejected I said how about I give you a hug....he beamed and just almost squeezed me to death then turned and ran off into the playground. I had a talk with Samantha about feelings and how would she feel if someone didn't want to hug her. Hopefully today if he asks for one she will remember our talk.

I have been thinking about getting my hair cut before the cruise but I just can't decide.

I'm thinking around 8am-ish... not sure how long everything takes but we'll have to drop off our rental car and find our way to the port and make a stop for bottled water to bring onboard. Are we leaving enough time to get everything done to be there by 10am? :confused3

OK, this is one of those email jokes that goes around, but it seemed appropriate to pass it along today:
Water vs. Wine

WATER
It has been scientifically proven that if we drink 1 liter of water each day, at the end of the year we would have absorbed more than 1 kilo of Escherichia coli bacteria found in feces, in other words, we are
consuming 1 kilo of poop.

WINE
We do not run that risk when drinking wine (or rum, whiskey, vodka, beer or other liquors) because alcohol has to go through a distillation process of boiling, filtering and fermenting.

WATER = Poop
WINE = HEALTH

FREE YOURSELF OF POOP .. DRINK WINE

It is better to drink wine and talk **** than it is to drink water and be full of ****.

There is no need to thank me for this valuable information, I am doing it as a public service and because I have a kind heart .

Sorry that I didn't post sooner. I have been going around here like a zombie. I took DD to the doctor at 8:30 & was taken right back. The doctor says that she has a virus that is going around now causing URIs & GI track problems. It can last for up to 2 weeks and wont start getting better for another 5 - 6 days or so. I guess that I looked despirate enough that he gave me an RX for a strong cough med so that we can all get some sleep. I have been trying to clean up and now the kids will be home soon. Carnitas will be for dinner. I ran to the store to pick up a few things to finish that up. I'll be online later. Only up to midnight so it looks like it will take a bit for me to catch up.

Well, maybe the only good thing about getting sick now is they won't be sick at cruise time.

For those of you who love homemade cheese cake here is an awesome recipe. This is from my grandmother's collection. You need a springform pan for this one:

Cheese Cake (spring form pan)

Graham Cracker Crust
2 cups Graham crackers – crushed
2 Tbls, sugar
3 Tbls. Butter – softened
Mix together – press into bottom of pan

Filling
2 – 8 oz. Blocks cream cheese
¾ cup sugar (add sugar gradually in mixer)
½ tsp. Salt
1 ½ Tbls. Flour
¾ tsp. Vanilla

Mix on low speed until no lumps remain. Then add the following.

3 eggs – mix on at a time
1 cup light cream
1 cup sour cream

Pour over crumb crust

Bake one hour at 325* - NO LONGER!!!

After removing from the oven run a knife around the edge of the pan.
This will help prevent cake from cracking.
After cool add favorite topping!

You had me at CRUST.

On the hair thing....maybe it is not such a good idea after all. I was thinking of geting maybe 4 inches or so trimmed so it would still be long enough to pull back and would not be too drastic of a change.

ME!
Well, sorta - pre-packing....thinking about what to pack.
Got the boys to try on clothes and bought the dress clothes they would need.
Organized each evening's attire so that we sorta coordinate for pix.
Took clothes to the cleaners yesterday. When DH got home, he saw his sportscoat bag was moved and asked 'Are you gonna make me wear that brown jacket?' I said innocently 'You don't like it?' He says 'It's ok,I'll wear it', and I'm thinking - You're darn right you will, and you will like it, too!! I mean, hey, I already told him he didn't have to rent a tux, what more does he want????? :lmao:

How many bags are people taking? rolling coolers?? (i've about decided to nix this idea) I tend to overpack, I see it coming in a big way. I got extra suitcases from MIL to loan our friends...hopefully I won't need them instead!! LOL

I've organized and this weekend I will go thru the checklist, pull out the suitcases and panic. But nothing is actually in luggage yet.

New Beatles "Album" coming out . . .

Gearge Martin and son put together a compilation of music from Revolver forward - they reviewed it and said it was really good, not a cheesy mash-up. Cirque du Soleil is doing a show to the music - that should be cool.

The Beatles were my first rock and roll love. They are still my all-time favorite band. LOVE the White Album. LOVE Abbey Road, and Sgt. Pepper, I could go on and on.

Remember that I said the only Apple product that I would buy is an iPod and I probably will right after Christmas.

The Chateau St Michele reisling from Washington is excellent, excellent, excellent. I can get a bottle for around $10 on sale though. Shall I bring a bottle for wine tasting? That is the one we order at Palo.

Oh bad memories here. Youngest DS did this -- would arch his body waaaaay back and just let the medicine dribble out of his mouth. :sad2:

We never did find a painless way to do it.....just slowly coaxed him into taking it. Those medicine "spoons" seemed to help a bit. And you know they're not cooperating because they feel so awful. Hang in there!! :grouphug:

Sophia used to be like that... We would use the syringe type medicine droppers and just shoot it down it her throat. One of us would her nose and the other would shoot the medicine. i know it sounds mean but she had to have the medicine. We also used to put in the tub that way in the event any di come up... she used to make herself throw it up from coughing so much... she was in the tub! She did this for maybe 6 months... I have no idea why... now she just takes the medicine.

Brack,
Tar Heel hoops update in case you've been too busy with work:
Tipoff against Winthrop at 7pm tonight; game is on ESPN.

Personally, we have never asked if we can take the kids out of school. We send a note in TELLING the teacher that our son/daughter will be out on these dates becasue they will be going on a family vacation. We request any work to be sent home and if there are any concerns they can call us. What we ususally get is two things: 1. a note saying "Have a great time, family time is important. 2. Nothing...

Our DS, who is 19 now, never had any work to do on any of our vacations. I remember one year he had to make up some work when we got back and they gave him 2 weeks to do that after our vacation.

I would call the salon and ask to speak with the person who cut your hair. Explain to her that the cut is not working for you and see if she can get you in sooner to do something else.

More for off to neverland:
Any committee that wants to make major changes (kill an event, spend more than budgeted, etc) will go to the president to have it put on the agenda. Discussion and vote at the meeting.

People just volunteer to chair committees. Usually arm-twisting is involved. You can only chair a committee for 2 years (so that no project is under one person's control forever and ever). If no one can be convinced to take over a committee, then you can chair it again (more than 2 years). Officers are one year (again, some people have done it for additional years because no one else would volunteer).

Thanks so much for taking the time to post these for me, Marielle. I'm really over my head here, and dealing with some people who are very power hungry, but then we they have the power, play the martyr. Poor me.... No one else volunteers.......... I have to do everything. But then when other people finally do steip up to the plate, they can't let go and even go so far as sabotaging projects.

One lady recently tried to address the "lack of volunteer" problem by offering to be a volunteer liason of sorts -- and all the responsiblity would have been on her shoulders to organize volunteers because she was willing to take it, but this "martyr group" continually ignored her efforts and purposefully would do projects that needed volunteers and wouldn't ask for support. Then they told her how she had failed, and nothing would work. It was just going to have to be all them, doing all the work.

So sad, and makes me want to leave the school.

I volunteer A LOT, so I'm friends with these people, but I'm also friends with a lot of people who don't volunteer, and it's such a division and "us against them" mentality..... More so with the pathological volunteers than the non volunteers. I love my time volunteering, and do it because I want to and because that is why I am not working.... I want to be involved with my kids.

But this sure does make it unpleasant.

Thanks again for the info.

...at 7. They had a state trooper there who told us all about the dangers of the internet with our kids. It was pretty informative. The student council was there and gave us a rundown of what they have been doing, etc. About 15 people showed up. :sad2: It's called a Citizens Advisory and it is a time to talk with the principal about issues and such while also providing information, such as tonight, about different things. Always the same people.. .

I just don't understand why it seems that across the board it is so hard to get volunteers at schools. I understand lots of people work......... but still in our school, even the weekend/ night time events are hard to get volunteers. And the teachers always have stuff to take home.

I find it so rewarding, and love the chance to peek in on DH's class, or see what's happening in the office, or hang out in the staff room.

Amy!! Hope you love it....I am so scared of the "cutter"!

New Confession. VERY HIGH MAINTENANCE HAIR GIRL!!! I have my hair cut every 4 weeks and colored and highlighted every other time. SCARY HUH! And today, my dear sweet wonderful hair stylist told me she has MS. She is only 30. She does want to keep working, just not as much, but wants to keep me on. Yea! But I also feel horrible for her. She has 3 kids and her husband does not have a job.

Yes. He took the Disney Shopping JS costume and added some of his own pieces. I think he loves it although I really don't want to have to deal with bringing that bird thing. :sad2:

Off topic random question.....I have been wondering this for a while now but forget to ask. :)

Those of you who put frozen meat in crock pots....what do you wrap it up with? I use to use saran wrap then foil but the wrap stuck & I had to peel it off the meat. I then used waxed paper....same problem & it is annoying in the morning when I am trying to pop something in the pot & head out for the day. TIA!

Amy, if I had to listen to the music on DH ipod and hold hands during it, you would have to supply a valium first. We do not dig the same music and his makes me want to run away from it!

Well if we get a new computer because this one is not reliable then I will have to use it and IT won't support the software if it is not on a PC.

Can someone tell me why I am trying to justify this to you guys? :confused3

Because Steve Jobs is giving them a kickback on all apple products sold through this thread. PJ is on the super mega plan because she has sold so many. They have been specially trained by the apple people to sell you on this product.

Techically it is optional for me to work at home. If I have a night call at 2 AM I could drive into the office and fix it. Me being able to log in at home is just my preference so we have to pay....

No my company pays for nothing. It would be my personal computer but like I said if I don't want to have to drive into the office at all hours for night calls then I have to have a PC at home that can run the software to log onto the mainframe system.

Hi guys,

I was on this thread a day or so ago, and many of you don't really know me as I haven't really registered with the group or anything. (We are laying low!) I need your help though, as a fellow cruiser!

Our school is new -- private -- small. The school council is a mess, with a few roque women who just sort of plan things without any democratic authority.

This is driving me nuts, and chasing many people away. I have offered to work to write the bylaws, which I think will help, as we can really lay down some guidelines so it's more democratic. I've formed a committee and we plan to get to work after Christmas.

This is where I need your help!

How do your PTA/ School councils work? In particular what is the structure? Do the committees report on the council meeting what they are doing, and then the council votes, or is the committee allowed to make decisions unilaterally?

Who sits on the council?

Do you require time served?

Do all committees hold elections as to who will chair it, or do people just volunteer to chair?

Does your fundraising committee have say over how funds are spent?

Etc, etc. Etc.

I'd love to hear your feedback!

Wish I could help, but I am a public school board member . . .

I have no idea how private schools do not have more problems like this without the structure that we form as policy and put into place. Even with that, there are problems from time to time, as anything like this is bound to be imperfect.

My best advice, structure fair and objective standards and policies and stick with them!

I have kind of a different pespective about "quitting". If they commit to a team, they need to finish the season. If they did not enjoy it then they don't have to sign up again. Something ongoing like dance: if they are not having fun with it then let them quit and try something else (swimming!). Life is way to short to spend time doing things you don't enjoy that you really don't HAVE to do (like work, dishes, laundry!!)

ITA!!! If she was 10 or older & made a conscious decision about doing this...then I would hold her to it. This is nothing like that! Her teacher has bailed on the class & they do not have the consistency that you were promised. How would any 4 yo really learn dance or get comfortable in an unstable learning environment like that? :confused3

I thought the boat and the ticker were two separate images that were not tied together so the boat would not move. :confused3 Of course I know nothing so feel free to ignore me. :teeth:

I am also nervous about our servers. You read all these great things and I was pretty underwhelmed on our 4 night cruise. I hope we have GREAT servers this time.

While I hope we have good servers, I am MUCH less worried about it now. We will all be together! Even bad servers are not going to spoil my cruise!

Did you tell her that you don't like do much with your hair? Did she know that you are a wash and wear? If she did then go to someone else. If you didn't tell her...give her a call, tell her this info and see what she can do.
