I don't think you really need to make dining reservations that early unless you want California Grill at fireworks time. otherwise, it's not that hard to get reservations if you are several months out still. In my experience, anyone else?
elaine
My advice . . .
If it is a popular meal (some character meals like princess meals, etc.) book as soon as possible. Some people actually wait until the first day a certain reservation is available and book immediately on that date . . .
Can you imagine that?
(I bet they're not doing it at 3:00 am though!)

I grew up on a veggie farm. We are all Pennsylvania Dutch....from Germany. Anyway, every year when I was growing up we would make our own. The process is gross...but YUMMY!!!!! We would make it so that we would have it for New Years Day. You MUST have pork and kraut on new years day!
I don't like it either (Amy does - and cooks it when I am gone on a trip) . . .
How many of you from other parts of the country do the pork and Kraut on NY Eve? I have heard it is only a Midwest thing.

suitcase....elaine, my DH would kill me with that much clothes. This was the first go at "what the heck should I pack"....there will be about 10 more rounds of this to get my clothes to fit into my suitcase. I'm good at packing for business trips or even for the beach...but cruises have so many different activities and I feel like dressing differently for each...hence I'm at 28 outfits...
oh, ok thanks Karen - I was beginning to get worried because it wouldn't be vacation if I had to change that often and manage that much clothing. My hubby also would kill me if I packed that much - I am already concerned about how we are going to transport formal and pirate stuff as well as regular clothing and have enough room. I think we are going to have to have one extra suitcase for the good stuff. ugh.

Let's clarify, the chicken pot pie with noodles is definitely at PA Dutch thing only. Even other parts of the state go with the crust definition. I grew up just outside PA Dutch country, but had family there.
So here's my mixed heritage answer: the thing with a crust is chicken pie (there's no pot involved, people). the noodle thing is chicken pot pie (I know it's not a pie, I can't help you there; but there is a pot).
Thank you Marielle!

Pork and kraut on New Year's Day to start the year off right; grew up with that from my German grandmother (and many others in PA). While in North Carolina, I learned that you need blackeyed peas to start the year. Others in the south go for Hoppin John. (no, not you John1)

I tried to keep watching West Wing after I had the twins and kept it up for the first year and a half - I told everyone not to call me then. But that is when everyone called anyway thinking the kids were in bed already.
I gave up on tv totally about 4 years ago. It's nice and quiet at night. I don't miss all those commercials. I would like to find one fun show to watch if I could ever remember what night it was on.
I have never seen GA, DH, any reality tv show. I used to watch Sex in the City since I'm from the Big Apple. I saw Sopranos once and a few minutes of several Friends episodes.
I love being clueless - keeps my head less cluttered. ;)

Yeah, I'm with Kristina on that one. Grandparents on the other side (Polish, of course) might have a problem with that. Then again, that grandmother would serve more dishes than could fit on a holiday table (a ham, a turkey, roast beef, galumpkes-spelling? all at the same meal!)

So that's how we hit 40000 today????? :rotfl: You guys are killing me here! I have been working my butt off today begging for the school. We managed to get some great donations for auction baskets for the carnival. I also found a bunch of scrapbook stuff 75% off at Target for the 2nd grade basket for our contribution. :) After rushing home to meet the kids at 3, I made cupcakes for DD's party and ordered balloons to pick up at 4:30. I helped DS write a story about his field trip and DD put together the goodie bags to hand out to her friends at the party. We got there on time with the balloons. The party was so easy!!! We got home & cleaned up, got the kids bathed, and into bed. Tomorrow will be at the school all day again. I can't wait until NEXT Saturday when this carnival is over with!

As he passed raging fire pits and shrieking sinners, he saw a man he recognized as a lawyer snuggling up to a beautiful woman.
'That's unfair!' he cried. 'I have to roast for all eternity, and that lawyer gets to spend it with a beautiful woman.'
'Shut up,' barked the devil, jabbing the man with his pitchfork.

Tonight at the parade my son got a "new" kind of candy. He was calling this "new" candy gummie bear m&m's.....can you guess what the "new" candy could be???
Highlight for answer:
Skittles!
That's the candy the school secretary gives to Walt whenever he gets dragged in with me to a volunteer activity. But he calls them "taste the rainbows" (yeah, from the commercial; guess we watch too much TV)

Marielle is absolutely right on this. My family was many years ago PA Dutch, and even though they moved to Ohio and bought cars, the recipes remained. My grandmother taught me how to make REAL chicken pot pie - in a pot, no crust, homemade square noodles.
Ok here's another view.....
AS a kid i thought chicken pot pie was those little 6" pie things from the freezer that you through in the toaster oven (yeah my mom shoulda been the original dis mom; we fended for ourselves ALOT)
After i met my DH he explained to me what real pot pie is.... chicken, noodles, and stuff. His dGM was always going to teach me how to make it. Haven't gotten around to learning yet though.

I don't like it either (Amy does - and cooks it when I am gone on a trip) . . .
How many of you from other parts of the country do the pork and Kraut on NY Eve? I have heard it is only a Midwest thing.
John1
We always do it on NY Day. Our family has a tradition that my parents started when we were kids. They never went out on NY eve, it was always a very special family night. My cousins would come over (their parents went out.) We would watch movies and play games all night. We ALWAYS had a big pepperidge farm sampler and fondue. We would have cheese and chocolate fondue. My mom got me a fondue pot when we built the house. We only use it once a year...but that is our tradition. One time in my life I missed our tradition. It was the year we were in Disney. Yes Disney was magical, but I kind of missed our little tradition!

Poor Nathan, being made to dress his little sister and being expected to do it well! :sad2:
OK here is my worse diaper story. DD was a little over 2 and liked to dress herself already. She went to bed & I got her up in the morning and took her downstairs to change her diaper because I could smell it. She walked down the stairs with me and got on the floor. When I held her foot to get her long PJs off I found a terrible treat. She had decided during the night that she wanted to wear the princess underwear that I had shown her & put in her drawer. She got up, took off her pants & diaper, put on her underwear & her pants & went back to bed. She had a MAJOR explosion that morning. YUP! You guessed it! She had tracked it out of her bed thru the hall, down the stairs, across the hardwood entryway, thru the kitchen, and into the family room. THAT mess wasn't fun at all. :guilty:

We were on the bus one time (that roomie and I.) One of the tourists started to laugh and said it was like "Becky from Sunny Brook farm meets the Spawn of Satan." It wasn't a very nice thing for her to say...but we must have looked odd. I always remembered that strange offhand comment.

Yes that is why they say to neuter your pets and leave breeding to the experts....
And an emergency c-section at 3 am will cost you two or three times that.....
(that the line that changed our minds about breeding Abby)
Sometimes the momma dog never makes it and you have to hand feed the pups every two-three hours....

There are MANY polish kids at the school where I teach. Trust me...they ALL eat school lunch when they serve pierogies! Anyway you talk about galumpkes. If it is the same thing (cabbage and stuff) they call it halupkies. They sell them at every firemans carnival and block party in the area!

[QUOTE=lbgraves]Dead serious. DS will eat chicken nuggets & tenders, beef hotdogs, and pizza with cheese & pepperoni. That is basically it for main foods. For lunch he has a nutrigrain bar, pretzles, and fruit snacks. He wont eat cheese, bread, noodles, fruit, or vegies. The only fruit product he will touch is apple sauce on occasion. He does like biscuits & garlic toast. The only dairy he will eat is yogurt & that has dropped off considerably. Another thing that I have to make sure of is that NOTHING except what he will eat is on the plate. I have to tell them to leave the vegies off on the ship or he wont touch any of it.
Giona also eats poorly. and Jaea eats everything including sushi and many foods that I don't even eat.
Giona lives on carbs which I think is very bad - too much sugar. He eats pasta, bread. milk and yogurt. We talk about the 5 a day all the time and sometimes I can get him to eat one fruit or vegetable.
I can't really figure it out. Some of it is laziness, he has some issues with texture. and he also does not like his plate too crowded or too many choices.
He seems to function better with this narrower group of choices.
He was sick for several weeks over the summer and lost several pounds and we just can't get it back on. Before he got sick, I found that gap 5 slim pants fit him and now even those are too big in the waist and he will be 6 in Jan. He is wearing too short size 4 pants which he doesn't even have to unsnap to get on.
I talked to his dr. about it but you can tell their training includes nothing about nutrition. She suggested asparagus because it is sweet. I would really like to do something because I feel it will improve his overall health, stamina and performance at school.
It's very stressful because the rest of us like ethnic foods but his diet is so bland we end up not eating what we want to.
DS's major issue is his sense of smell. It is super sensitive. He wont be in the room with bread, PB, or anything that has much of an odor.

It sounds like DD had a great time at the party. That is wonderful. Anything easy for mom is even better!!!!

The girls seemed to be ok this morning. Today Samantha has her very first field trip to the hospital to get a cardiac ultrasound (I thought they were going the other day!) So she wanted to make sure I wasn't late getting her to school. Nevermind that she makes me late almost daily.
As I was doing Samantha's hair Haley got into a bag of the fire hot doritos. Apparantly the eyes in the back of my head weren't working. You know, that kid ate them, never asked for a drink and went some kind of evil when I tried to take them away? I was shocked! I love hot stuff and Samantha has tried them but can't handle them. So she had orange fingers and it was all over her mouth. Lovely. I feed my kid Doritos for breakfast.
It wont be the last time. :rotfl: She is self sufficient. :thumbsup2

:guilty:
I am gagging at the thought!

HAven't you guys heard that little kids have magnets built into their fingers? That's how they grab things they aren't supposed to.
Then as they get older, the magnetic force tends to fade...that's why older kids and teens tend to loose things.
I'm telling ya - they are born this way!
That explains how DD did it! She was 2 and I heard "help! Help me mommy!" coming from the kitchen. I went in there & couldn't find DD then was startled to hear her again coming from above me! She had climbed onto the fridge without the use of a chair...just the cabinets next to it. OY!

There are MANY polish kids at the school where I teach. Trust me...they ALL eat school lunch when they serve pierogies! Anyway you talk about galumpkes. If it is the same thing (cabbage and stuff) they call it halupkies. They sell them at every firemans carnival and block party in the area!
My GP's version of galumkes was a ground meat and rice mixture rolled in cabbage leaves and cooked in a pressure cooker in a tomato kinda broth.
My family also makes homemade pierogies for easter/xmas. They're alot of work though. Yeah another thing i need to learn to make.
I only recently mastered my families potato salad so i'm taking ti easy this year.
