I am totally excited we will be at Disney during "Gay Days"!
We scheduled our vacation a couple months ago and the other day a friend called to tell me "Did you know *gasp* you will be at disney during Gay Days?!?!?!?!" I said "REALLY?!" She *knew* I would cancel and *OBVIOUSLY* doesn't know me at all!
So, let me explain....
I am Straight, married, boring - I know. One of my best friends for the past 13ish yrs is gay. He and his partner have been regulars with our children, so its nothing new around here. My kids *love* their "uncles". Our kids are adopted. My son is AA, my daughter is special needs Hispanic/white. Our family is "different". I just love the acceptance in the gay and lesbian community! I love that my children get to see other families that aren't "typical". My son sees other "brown" kids with "light skinned" parents, etc. We aren't judged, people don't make assumptions... and I just love it!
We love Disney and this is our 2nd trip this yr (3rd is scheduled in Oct). I am most excited about this one! So, you all may think I am totally loopy, but here is one straight woman excited about being at Gay Days at WDW!!!

Thanks for the welcome!
I am actualy concerned about the heat as well. My special nees daughter can't control her body temp (among many other things) and overheats very very quickly. However, water is awsome and maintains a good temp for her. We may end up camping at the pool, but it will still be fun! We are taking a friend and her son that can't go any other time (she is a school teacher). I figure if nothing else my friend can always takethe boys and head out while I stay at the pool with my daughter. Such punishment ;)
Its our frst trip back since joining DVC and we are going on part of our developer points!

If you go to the parks, ask for a "Guest assistance pass." Let them know about your DD's condition and they should be able to offer ones that means you won't have to wait in the sun for attractions. :thumbsup2

I will be taking tons of pics! I always do! In fact here (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v432/_kulali_/Disney08/) are some pics from our last trip and here (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v432/_kulali_/Disney/) are some different pics from the trip before that. Pathetic, I know :)
Thanks for the GAC tip. We have used GACs both trips with my daughter. It really does help her. I know at her whopping 25 lbs we could stand in line and hold her, but its not realistic. She has her power chair and is "mrs Independent" and would just prefer to go on her own. What 4 yr old wants mommy to have to hold them?
I think it will be a great trip! And I will wear my new "label" with honor :cool1:

What fun! I wish I were able to go during Gay Days this year, but my son's high school graduation is 6/6, so I'd end up missing half of it. It's so tempting, however. Perhaps next year. :woohoo:

mykidsintow...welcome!
This will be my 3rd trip to WDW during GayDays, but the first without DS. (He went when he was 7 and 13.) I've taught him well to pay no heed to colors of skin or anything else except the person and what is in their heart to the disappointment of some of our extended family. :rolleyes1 For him and us it's always just a trip to WDW. :cool1:
The last trip I made a tshirt that said "Where's the Family Reunion?" to wear so I need to pull it out for this trip. I may make another one for the trip though..."Cool Straight Person"
BTW...when are you going to be in WDW? We arrive on June 1 and depart on June 7, but DH has to be back at work on Sunday.:guilty: Oh, well, I can't complain...DH & I have made 2 trips already this year and I'm heading back in July with my Dsis & Dniece.
And just a thought...although I'm sure you're well traveled with your special needs daughter, but you might be interested in the Passporter Guide WDW Guide for Guests with Special Needs...can't remember the exact title, but they only have one guide book for special needs. It's a great book with lots of suggestions that I never would have thought about before.
Hope you all have a great trip! And to the rest of the DIS GLBT Board...see ya in WDW in June! :dance3:

I think I am going to tye dye us some matching mickey shirts, but yours sound like a great idea too! :). I haven't done shirts yet and I want one. I know I am nuts. Anyway, we will be there June 1-8th. We are staying Saratoga Springs, I have never stayed there before. My husband isn't coming this trip. It will be my 2 kids, myself and a friend of mine with her son. My DH was with us Feb and will be in Oct.
If you have any suggestion on where to stay at SSR I would *love* to hear it! I plan to call and make my requests later this week. I have never seen the book, but we have never had any trouble at all with our daughter at Disney. She *adores* disney. She is so very tiny (23 lbs) and talks a million miles a minute to anyone that will listen. She generally has people bowing at her feet and escorting her here and there. She is just a magnet in general and CMs at Dis are no exception they usually make over her.
Excited to see someone will be there when we are! Where are you staying?

Well, since the gay folks wear red, you could always make red shirts and put something like "Friends of the 'family' " on them! :thumbsup2

Hey, cool! I wish I could go there (not for a few years, though. School. Finals. Yuck.) during Gay Days! Really! I'm thinking about doing the college program with Disney during my Junior year of college (quite a while away, since I'm only in high school). Maybe I can shoot for the Jan-June semester! LOL, sounds like you'll be having lots of fun. Will you be wearing red?
I'm a CSP, but not a Cool Straight Person (because well, I'm bi!).
I'm a Cool SHORT Person!

Cool - have fun!
I was at Disneyland during Gay Days in 2008. I was there for a conference and spent the evening at DL alone and found that those in red shirts were most likely to chat with me in line (and there were a lot of lines - the park was very crowded).
I so don't get why people worry about scheduling their trips around Gay Days (except possibly for the aforementioned crowding).
I hope you and your kids have an amazing time!

We're staying in a studio at SSR, too! (Unless my wait list for BWV or BCV comes through, but I'm not holding my breath, but we've never stayed there so...) DH (Eric) & I love SSR! It's so much like a small town! The grounds are beautiful and we enjoy just walking around the property.
I've requested the Grandstand area since it's the newest section and has a themed pool...not that DH and I will end up using it probably. It's also the first bus stop, so that is a big plus in my book. I've stayed in the Carousel section...good location if you can get right near the bus stop...not too far to the main building. Also stayed in the Paddock section...it was good, but pretty long walk to the main building. Also stayed in the Springs section...right by the bus stop. It was very easy to access the main building, but the downfall is that is the last bus stop. I've not stayed in Congress Park...it's the closest to Downtown Disney, but pretty far to access the main building. There is a quiet pool at Congress Park and one in the Paddock section. I would think with the kids you might enjoy the Grandstand area because of the themed pool there and the closeness to the main building as well as being the first bus stop. (I hope that is still the order...it was in January.)
We don't arrive until late on the 1st, but I'm adding a photo of DH and I from our March trip so if you see us around say "HI"! I've gotten our ADRs and stuff finished...we're not doing any of the extras this time other than Star Wars weekend on Friday and maybe back again on Saturday...DH hasn't decided, but he's a big Star Wars fan. We'll have our tshirts on for that day that he designed for our 2005 trip during Star Wars weekend. It's got a picture of Sorcerer Mickey...did I spell that right? don't think so...my contacts are sticking too much...lol Anyway...it's Mickey with a light saber instead of his wand and it says "May the Magic be with You!"

Yaay I am excited! I will definately call and request that section! I think a themed pool is definately a plus! We plan to spend a few days at the pool. Also getting her chair on a bus would be much much easier at the first stop. Here are pictures of us. I suspect we will be easier to pick out of the masses. I usually have balloons tied to my daughters power chair. I know it irks a lot of people, but it helps her navigate the masses, because they kinda keep people at a distance for her.
Yaay I am excited! Hope to see you there! The first is me, my daughter and her service dog. The 2nd is my daughter and son. We should be pretty easy to spot ;)

I think someone else commented about it after we got back. I guess I didn't think much about it. He didn't try to jump off or anything. He laid there like a good service dog would! I think he liked the teacups better than the little drop on the pirate ride. That startled him, but he rode it again willingly and didn't mind the drp the 2nd time.
The teacups are a happy place... why wouldn't a dog like the teacups?

I prefer "quirky"...<g>
My son, when he was 17, was taking a new girl out. When they left my home, I was headed "to work". She asked my son, "What does your mother do for a living". He said "She's a lesbian lounge singer". She said, "no, really..." He said, "no, really"... He is now 21 and she will be my daughter in law shortly. She is also the daughter of a southern baptist preacher and let me tell you they are "quirky and lovable" and will be great in-laws.
My point is - it takes all kinds -
Thanks and welcome!!
