October crowds

My family is looking to go down for the first time in October. What are the crowds and the weather like. MY DD 5 and DS 7 like to swim. Also, based on our budget we can stay 4 maybe 5 nights at a moderate or 7 and a value. What would you do? Do you still feel the magic of Disney if you stay at a value. We wold also like to do two character meals one for each child. Which two would you recommend?

As for reservations. We are members of the Disney Club and AAA. I must admit that I am very intimidated by all of this. Should I go through a travel agent and get a package, or do it my-self. What does everyone else do?
