View Full Version : Just What is Disney Constructing Behind the CBR?

Took a drive around the CBR today (kids were asleep in the car after the drive back from Kennedy Space Center and they needed some extra winks) and lo and behold it looks like Mickey's Construction Crew is digging what would appear to be another building or two (complete with mini-lake) to the CBR complex.
Any word on this? It's only about 100 yards or so behind Trinidad if memory serves correctly.

If it's down the road beside CBR then it's Pop Century. As you come off Oceola Parkway onto the street that runs to the side of CBR you will see something being built. If it had large figurines on the buildings sort of like the All Stars then it was Pop Century which will in the value range like the All Stars. It should have been open already but 9/11 and the down turn in the economy have slowed construction. They are still working on it just at a much slower pace.

I may be wrong but I don't think it's Pop Century. If you were standing in the parking lot of Trinidad trying to get the car seats cool for the kids you'd see the construction right there. It just feels like it's too close to CBR to be PC.

Speaking of Pop Century, I noticed on the Dreams Unlimited site that they are taking reservations beginning in October. Does anyone know when exactly it will be open? Has anyone made a reservation there yet?

I am not 100% sure of this, but it may be a new resort being built that is not owned by Disney. There was a post about this a couple of months ago. If I remember correctly, the construction is for a resort called Bonnet Creek, and it is being built on a piece of property not owned by Disney, but are using Disney property to access the land. The story was something like that .... I bet there are some other DISers here who may remember for sure ..... :)

When we were at CBR last week I saw the sign that said "Bonnet Creek construction entrance"
I wasn't sure what was going on there

The resort being built is Pop Century. You can see it when you cross the bridge at Caribbean Beach. My hubby and I were just there 2 weeks ago and went exploring. They have a sign up that says Future site of Pop Century One area is complete with Big bowling pins.

boltjames,
I was staying at Martinique a couple of weeks ago and our bus stop is directly across from that road leading to the construction. I was very curious as to what they were building too. I don't think it's Pop Century either...that's on the other side of CBR. I thought Bonnet Creek was going to be some new DVC villa's or something like that....

That's not Pop Century you saw. Pop Century is on a different part of the resort, and you can definitely tell it's Pop Century when you drive by. It looks identical to the All Stars, except the icons are bowling pins, etc. instead of footballs, etc.
It's also not DVC units. It's a non-Disney owned property.

If you go down Victory Way (runs along the side of CBR), Pop Century will be on your left. I'm not sure whether that is the construction you are seeing or whether it is some of resort being developed, as others suggest.
DVC has two projects planned. One is to build new units in a section of DI. The other is a brand new development along the Eagle Pines golf course. Eagle Pines is part of the Bonnett Creek golf complex (two courses). Construction signs could indicate where they are keeping equipment although the actual development is closer to Ft. Wilderness.

This is unfortunately not a Disney resort. It is not the Pop Century which is very obvious with the giant bowlin pins sticking up. This is a piece of property owned by a foreign investor. It is bordered by Disney property and the only entrance available was right next to CBR. The new road runs along the side where Martinique, OPR and Trinadad are located. I have not seen any artwork for this new place and hope it is not a bland high rise that looms over CBR, though I don't much care one way or the other if it looms over Pop Century.

If you guys are right, and this is some outside investor that owns and is developing this piece of property, how on EARTH did it happen??? Disney owns (or I thought they did) all that land around that area, how on earth did someone else come to own that small piece??? Very interesting.... Not in a good way either, you have no idea of knowing what kind of property it's going to be.....

We are all obviously talking about a different area. I was just a CBR 2 weeks ago and went to see what the Resort was for my self. It was Pop Century complete with bowling pins. You can see the Resort when you cross over the bridge.

The new DVC resort is/was going near Osprey Ridge and Eagle Pines Golf Courses.

There is a thread on the rumors board about this topic which has a link to an Orlando Sentinel article on this resort. It is NOT the new DVC facility at the golf course area; rather it IS on land owned by non-Disney investors and apparently was just a piece Disney couldn't acquire back in the 60s when they put the land together.
The article says they have an access agreement over the Disney property and entrance to the property will be via Buena Vista drive. Although it's possible that the Bonnet Creek developers were entitled to that access under prescriptive easement law, it seems quite likely that although Disney doesn't own this piece, it probably has had enough control or input over the appearance to be comfortable that it won't be a glaring problem for WDW.

DVC is not building a Bonnet Creek Resort. They are currently finishing up Beach Club Villas. They are starting on the Disney Institute Villas, not yet named, and they will be working soon on the Villas at Osprey Ridge (working name).

No, it's not. The only construction DVC is doing right now is finishing interior work and detailing at BCV, and tearing down the townhouses at the DI. There is no work going on for Osprey Ridge yet, and even if there was, there's no way you'd see it from the CBR.

It's correct that the planned DVC will be at the Eagle Pines Golf Course which, combined with Osprey Ridge, is called Bonnet Creek Golf Club.
Also, Pop Century is located on the left side of Victory Way. Victory Way runs along the side of CBR and leads to Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex. You would be able to see the construction from CBR. Whether or not there is an additional development that can be seen from CBR, I can't say since I haven't been there lately.
There is a development being built on Celebration property by an outside company. Disney sold or leased them the land. In fact, much of the development taking place out by the Shrine and the new outlet centers is on Disney owned property (whether it was sold or leased to the developers of the many new hotels etc., I'm not sure).

"Bonnet Creek Construction Entrance" is what it says on the sign. If you're approacing CBR from I4, you'd make a left turn into its parking lot less than 300 feet from the CBR's entrance.
Most CBR visitors wouldn't know it was there except for the upcoming traffic mess and those Martinique dwellers looking from the parking lot. Disney would have to relocate a hell of a lot of tall old trees to hide this one.

Though I am not sure, it may well be the resort discussed in the following article from 2000:
http://www.thetimesharebeat.com/archives/2000/ts/tsjuly77.htm
It is a "Bonnet Creek" resort but not Disney's Bonnet Creek

drusba, this definitely sounds like what the original poster was talking about, did you notice how large a project it is?
"The 482-acre Bonnet Creek Resort, bordered on three sides by Disney property, is looking to build some 3,000 hotel rooms, 1,600 time-share units and a 250,000-square-foot conference center"
It's going to be mighty big... I really hope it's not a high rise or something like that :-( They could at least make it fit in... although with Pop Century on it's other side, who knows how they could make it fit in with that :D

Drusba,
Thanks for the info. We saw the sign for bonnet creek and just figured that meant the dvc property. Oh well , I hope they are good neighbors

Got a little more info:
Development received final zoning and building approval in October 2001 and then some amendments in December. There will be 2800 hotel rooms, 1100 timeshare units, a 250,000 sg ft conference center, and an 18-hole golf course. Currently called the Bonnet Creek Resort (Disney's "Bonnet Creek" area is a few miles away to the North). There is apparently some agreement the developer needs to comply with entered into with the Reedy Creek Improvement District (the Disney controlled governmental entity that controls zoning and public services for WDW) indicating that Disney had some input into restrictions and zoning for the resort.

drusba, do you know if this resort has views of Pop Century? I'm just trying to place it's exact location... I'm not completely familiar with CBR, but I know that one entire section of CBR has views of Pop Century... I saw that last time we were down.... I think when we are down in November we'll have to go explore... curiosity always got the cat :D

Had to correct this as had my direction screwed up. Pop Century is to the west and south of CBR. This resort is to be to the east and south CBR.

When we were at CBR in mid November, we stayed in Trinidad North. You could see where the trees were being cleared from where we crossed the parking lot to get to the bus stop I think. At that point there was no sign of construction of any kind. The cleared area resembled a wide road but we never saw any equipment, etc. It was across from the parking areas and the one "entrance" into the CBR parking area. I couldn't see at that time where they were entering or leaving the property.
When I posted a question on the rumors board someone said it was not Disney but an independent developer. I couldn't believe that Disney didn't own the property that close to one of their roadways and resorts!
