Look at the Disney company today.
Look at what everything has become about.
Money.
Money money money.

Gr,
they're closing VMK just because of the fact that they aren't getting
money.

it sickens me to say or hear that word now.

This is a mainly VMK thread, but to make it TB related and debatable:

what are your opinions on Disney today versus Disney 30 years ago?

That's kinda sad, but I don't go on anymore.

VMK is closing May 21.
 I can't believe it. It shocks me. All my friends...items...everything will be gone.
I really hope the boards stay. The VMK boards will keep me connected with everyone.

Wow, I can't believe with such a following they are closing it.

Um, I am writing an entire 15-page paper on Consumerism and Disney is going to be a main focus. I'll let you know what I think when I'm done.

Right now, there are positive and negative aspects of Disney now and then.

As a corporation...they're not so different from any main ones. But as a spirit...well...they haven't lost that magic...that's why we're still going back. That's why people still love their jobs (despite minimum wages). That's why college kids fight for spots in the college program. It's why we're all still obsessed. They're obviously doing SOMETHING right...

Walt wanted to make money too. He was a businessman, don't forget that. All that said, I'm not sure if he'd be ashamed.

I know, but Walt's goal was to make Disney affordable and fun.
Disney already has enough money of their own.
If they want more, they can pull it out of ________________

Don't miss this important message from Yavn about the future of VMK.

I hope you're enjoying our Topsy Turvy ToonTown month. We've got more cool events on the way including chances to win 14-day unlimited trial memberships to ToonTown Online!

Topsy Turvy ToonTown month won't last forever – so get to building some Topsy Turvy Guest Rooms, Game Rooms and Quests!
Speaking of things lasting forever, recently several of you have been asking about how much longer VMK will last. Well today I have some news about our future.
As many of you know, Virtual Magic Kingdom was created and launched back in 2005 as part of the Disneyland 50th Anniversary Celebration. VMK exceeded expectations in terms of performance, and as a result we extended the promotion (that is, VMK, the game) well beyond the 50th Celebration.
Eventually though, all promotions must come to an end, so I'm announcing today that on May 21, 2008, VMK will open our virtual gates for the last time. You read that right: VMK was never intended to last forever we'll close the game for good at the end of day on May 21st, 2008.
This is not an April Fool's joke.
Now we understand this news may be upsetting to you but let me explain. Again, VMK was launched as part of Disneyland's 50th Celebration in 2005 and the game has lived well beyond the originally intended time it was planned to run.
Over time you've seen our in-Park presence and other parts of VMK go away. You may remember our V.I.P Tours at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, or our in-Park Quest. We didn't stop doing those things because we don't love the game or our Guests, but because the time to run those promotions ended.
At Disney we're still committed to building communities and online virtual worlds and we're looking forward to providing you the opportunity to enjoy other exciting new experiences.
Don't look at VMK ending as a bad thing think of it as a new beginning, a chance to explore something fresh and new! Think of it like school: You don't want to leave your old friends, but still, the time has come to graduate and move onto another great adventure.
In the time since we've launched VMK, we've seen many players come and go, and we're hoping you will graduate from VMK too in particular, to games like Pirates of the Caribbean Online, Disney's ToonTown Online, Club Penguin and the upcoming Fairies and Cars online virtual worlds. We think you'll find you enjoy those just as much as VMK – if not more.

Live the Legend! Play Pirates of the Caribbean Online!
In the meantime, VMK will run like it always has, with great events and new items every week until we close we might even fit in one or two more surprises along the way (of the virtual item kind).
So what's going to happen to the VMK Staff when VMK closes? Well, we're all moving onto other projects here at Disney and positively looking ahead to the future. Me and a few other team members have already moved to other projects (but are still making sure VMK is running smoothly until it closes).
I know that this is sad news for you, but we're all thankful we've had the opportunity to enjoy the game for as long as we did. Just know there are even cooler things on the horizon ahead, for you as players and for us as game creators. So as my good friend Captain Jack Sparrow would say...
"Bring me that horizon!"
-Yavn
Questions? We've prepared this Q&A:
Why is this happening? Why are you closing Virtual Magic Kingdom?
As Yavn mentioned in the Newsletter, VMK was created and launched as part of a promotion to celebrate Disneyland's 50th Anniversary.
The game/promotion has ran well beyond the original time it was intended to.
When is the last time I can play?
The game will close at 10:00PM PST, Wednesday, May 21st, 2008.
Will I still be able to buy cards and pins in the Parks?
Yes, you can still buy VMK Cards and Pins at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Parks while supplies last but after May 21st, 2008 the codes will no longer work in the game.
What will happen to the game and the website?
The website will remain up for a few weeks to let people know what has happened, but you will not be able to log into the game after May 21th, 2008.
What will happen to all my virtual stuff in VMK?
Since the virtual items live only in VMK, you won't be able to access your VMK items or take them with you to another Disney Online Virtual World.

I come here because this is sort of like my family. My second family.

I know that if I ever met some of these people in real life I'd have no problem running up to them and giving them a humongous hug. I know that I wouldn't be shy at all, and I know I would act as if I had known them since they were in diapers. I guess it's because everyone here is just so darn accepting, friendly and down to earth. There's no judging around here based on material things. Everyone here can just be themselves.

It's really a great place to have, especially for people like us in our teen years. Going through all kinds of things, it's really great to just get away from that for a little bit and come to people who welcome you with open arms.

And no matter how shy someone is in real life, they can get to be the most opinionated person on here.

I come here because honestly, this place has really helped me grow as a human being.

That's too bad about the VMK, I never really got into it, but it's stilla big loss to alot of people.
It's strange that they would close ti just because it's not making money though...maybe they are losing money from it (i don't know HOW...but I can't see them closing it just because it doesn't MAKE money??)

But I agree with what Jenny & Ash were saying, Walt was a businessman, interested in money just as any oter businessman would be. But WDW will always have the Walt Disney spirit.

I don't really know if Wal would really be his rolling over in his grave @ the state of the Disney corporation, I'm not so sure about that...I mean, he played to HIS audience, The Disney Corporation today is playing to THEIR audience. Mickey Mouse cartoons were perfect for the 1960's audience, but today it's a whole new playing field.
Walt was all for innovation, and invention, and I truly do believe that the Disney Corporation is doing a genuinely good job in that department.
I think Walt would be thrilled at CGI movies...it's the way of the future, just like EPCOT was to Walt.
And Hannah Montana, The Animal Kingdom, All the Resorts that weren't in Walt's original plan...well they are all really inventive too AND they make people happy, which was another one of Walt's main goals. (well, MOST of the family...I KNOW alot of you don't like hannah montana, but the reality is that kids love it, and whatever makes kids happy makes parents happy...and to be honest, I really do like Hannah Montana at 18!!)

Anyways, that's just my opinion. I get kind of irritated when people say that Walt wouldn't like the current state of Disney, I mean it's a whole different world now, the simplicity of the '60s is looong gone, and I think Walt would appreciate the technology and advancements that we have today.

And I'll finish my novelesque post riiight abouuuut NOW.

To me, it's their television and movie industries, that are only in it for the money. Hannah Montana and HSM have gone WAY overboard, they're everywhere, they have freaking ice shows, toothbrushes, 3-D concerts.. etc.
All little kids want now is little Hannah Montana dolls, they don't give no crap about princesses or talking animals. It's all SUPERSTARS and really unrealistic visions of high school. You can say all Disney things are unrealistic, but really, when it's a movie about basically real life.. you shouldn't make it out to look like everyone in high school is cheery, sings and dances and wears bright colors. It's just not how things are.
I also am getting annoyed with 3-D Pixar movies. Sure, yes, it looks really nice, but I'd rather watch a 2-D animation than a Pixar movie.

Now, I do know that the parks bring in a lot of the money. Yes, in some ways, they are money grabbing, and you could go several other places cheaper...
But to me, they're the ones who still have the... morals? of Walt. They still live true to 'Dreams do come true', and making people feel like they're not really on vacation, and they're not in the real world. They're in this fantasy world where nothing else but now matters. It's a truly creative place, that holds all of the true Disney classics, to all of the new stuff. To me, it's what he would have wanted.

Now, I do say often that Walt is turning in his grave. None of us could really know if he would be.

Haha, sorry I had to giggle at that. Do you know how many people smoked back in the day? It was very very widely accepted, and most definitely allowed at Disneyland.

I don't see how kids crying has anything to do with the Disney company? I try not to judge because I'm not a parent myself and I have no idea what the story behind that crying kid is.

Again, you probably wouldn't know this because you haven't been to WDW yet but there are a lot of adult activities. Epcot has a Food and Wine festival, Flower and Garden Festival, Concerts featuring stars from the 50's/60's and 70's and multiple fine dining restaurants. But at the same time they have some really great and fun activities for children.

I don't think that the disney company is going completely downhill yet. They're obviously doing something right to keep thousands of people coming through their turnstiles every day. I'm a little sad that they won't be using
2D animation anymore, but computer generated animation is really cool, and I think Walt would be impressed by that.

And about WDW being mostly for kids, I am 16 years old and I love disney, and so do my parents. Disney is for everyone.

::yes:: Even Walt smoked..in fact, that's how he died. :guilty: He was a heavy chain-smoker.

I think, im confusing it with something else actually.

I actually have been to WDW, I just dont remember everything, and things might have changed, but from what I remember (which...okay nevermind)

I cant exactly speak, because the last time I was there was when I was 4 so thats all i wouldve visited, and the only reason why my parents WOULDNT like disney, is because of the heat, and thats not disney, thats florida!

Okay!
Took me some time to get that thought process out.

I don't see how kids crying has anything to do with the Disney company? I try not to judge because I'm not a parent myself and I have no idea what the story behind that crying kid is.

Disney is still very much a family place.

lol saame.
Walt himself actually died form lung cancer from chains smoking for so many years!!
And drinking too...was definitley the norm back then.
Smoking & drinking are less socially acceptable now than they were then.
Until the mid 90's-early 2000's smoking was allowed in restaurants and all over the parks!! Now there are designated smoking areas and very few drinking options (except in Epcot lol)

But anyways, I still stand by what I said. I think Walt would like it. It's still a family place that embodies the spirit that he created.
(the whining kids probabl existed back then too...spoiled brats will be spoiled brats  )

I have to agree I've been to both Disneyland and WDW and I do believe DLR has more magic than WDW. Even though I love both DLR deffinately has much more magic than WDW. I know friend who have been to both and they always say DLR has much more magic and is so much better than WDW. Also I dont get Club Penguins I was watching the kids I babysit play the game it seemed worthless to me please dont flame me for saying that. Also my neighbor was really quite rude he ran into a girl from his school who he didnt like and he started calling her a loser and telling her to get a life... Then he went off with some of his other friends and was quite rude with them... So I dont know but I have no intrest in club penguin also theres no disney magic there its penguins NOT A CASTLE so I dont get why they expect all to migrate to those sites when we love seeing castles

1. I agree, DLR has lots of magic, but I couldn't really totally agree, just cuz I've never been to WDW, lol.
2. I'm pretty much the ONLY one on this board who likes Club penguin, or at least that i'm aware of, haha, so don't worry about people flaming you for that.
3. Remember, Club penguin originally wasn't a disney game, it orginally started off on its own, and yea, I think they're just telling us to migrate their because they bought it, and it's a little more like vmk in terms of graphics I guess.
So, back to DIS, just my two cents!;) :cool1:

Okay, I guess I'll put in my 2 cents. Or 5 or 6 cents.

I think DLR will always have that great nastolgic feeling for people who have been going there since they were tiny. And I most definitely agree it is better than Magic Kingdom (except the castle, DLR's is pathetic.) But I just have to say I think WDW holds more magic for me. I can't really put my finger on it, it just does.

I don't think the Disney company is going downhill at all. And I'm sort of surprised people have been downing it so much even though they still love visiting WDW or DLR every summer and love the feeling they get there. Hypocrite much? I'm obsessed with Disney, I love it so much and I'll always stand up for it I guess. It has changed the world.

no no no mouse.
it wasn't not aimed specifically at you! don't worry.
i just find that there is alot of negativity regarding Disney Co. on this board and how it's just a money making business and it's just aimed at kids and it's not what Walt would want.
Which I truly disagree with.

Anyways, regarding VMK closing because it's not making money...I did a little investigating and from the VMK site:

Why is this happening?

As Yavn mentioned in the Newsletter, VMK was created and launched as part of a promotion to celebrate Disneyland's 50th Anniversary.

The game/promotion has ran well beyond the original time it was intended to.

and even though it's closing it WILL still be making Disney Co. money:
Will I still be able to buy VMK Cards and Pins in the Parks?

Yes. You will still be able to buy VMK Cards and Pins at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Parks while supplies last, however after May 21st, 2008 the codes will no longer work in the game.

So...I don't REALLY think it has anything to do with money. I'm sure you could argue against that...but it looks like it's just run it's course.
Disney does this all the time (gets rid of things people love) but it's always replaced with something better (ie; The new POTC anyone?)
So maybe Disney will come out with something different?
Who knows.

I honestly don't think they are. 'Money' is what people automatically think when they close something. I've heard of no official statements from Disney saying the reason they closed it involved money. People automatically just want to blame Disney and yell the first thing that makes sense.

But honestly, that doesn't make sense. Just think about it. How are they losing money? They can't be.

Well, websites do cost money to maintain.
Especially a Disney-owned one like VMK. They have to hire people to constantly add new things, create games, and just to overall make sure things are going okay technically.

If they're not making enough money back on advertisements to pay these people's salaries, then they'd be losing money instead of making a profit.

That's why I figured they were closing it, anyway.

As for the money issue, it could be a possibility. But they shouldn't have to close down a site because of it. Disney is a rich company, and the costs that they had to pay to mantain the site (i.e: Admins, Domains, Servers, Etc.) is like pocket change to Disney.

VMK.
Its different. The way things work out, you need to COMPLETELY understand EVERYTHING about the game, and how it works in order to say a statement like that.

Vmk, is a community. You cant remember it for being "An online game" no, see theres like a vibe, how you know you would log on just to see PEOPLE. Not just to play pirates, earn credits, and do random things. Its this magical feeling in which I cannot describe.

I'm sure if I played it I'd be a bit more upset.

This thread is so random & there are so many different points floating around so it's hard for everyone to get theirs across.

I mean, the main points I'm trying to make are that
a) Walt WOULDN'T be ashamed of today's Disney Co.
&
b) VMK isn't closing due to loss of money for Disney Co.

I'm definitley in no way saying that you guys don't have the right be to upset that it's closing, because I'm sure I would too...it's just that SO many different things got thrown into the mix of this thread that everyones opinions are going all over the place lol.

Oh okay gotcha!

Yes, my choice of wording didnt exactly fit what my mind was saying.

Yeah, I dont think its about money at all, I just think that maybe....just maybe they are closing it because its just becoming some sort of hassle? Or, because the workers are bored, and they will soon need to "modify" it to be better graphics or something, and they just dont have the time and energy.

This is also confusing me, because everyones emotions are all thrown around everywhere so its almost like "Well it seems to be that everyone thinks.." but thats not the case at all.

Okay, I gotcha now.

I liked VMK and everything, but it is just an online game. Some of you are acting like its your life and without it you will go insane. VMK was full of the Disney magic and spirit and I was an active VMKer, but it's Disney's decision. VMK was meant to be a promotion for Disneyland's 50 anniversary (I believe); It was not meant to even be open this long. I was very sad when I first heard VMK was closing, and just today I got over it. It was fun when it lasted. But it's their decision.
