I guess I'm the last one that has not received the DCL "surprise". Maybe by the time I get home from the cruise I will have it. Needless to say I am using a different TA for the PC cruise!

Don't worry, I'm 45 minutes from the DCL offices and we haven't gotten ours, either...:confused3

I am still trying to decide what I want!!

There are only 5 glossy magnetic sheets in the package... so that is what I am going to do!

Actually, has anyone seen the cool Mickey ears and hats someone made to put around the door sign? They are kewl :cool2: I may have to use some of my magnetic sheets for a few of those

These 14 will become scrapbook pages. They are not on magnetic paper. I'll slide them into a plastic sheet protector which has magnets on the back. That way I can change them daily (and they are really not very fancy). I still haven't made our "main" signs on the magnetic paper (planning just one of those for our door and one for Hank and Jans). I did decorate the dry erase/corkboards a few weeks ago though. So, the door decor is almost done.:thumbsup2

Sending you pixie dust! How stressful!

Still have not received the surprise either, btw.

I am in awe of how organized everyone is! And I thought I was doing well with my easy to pack inflatable parrot (Saw it, HAD to have it. Nothing says "classy" like an inflatable parrot). Now I just have to figure out how to attach it to my shoulder so it doesn't droop. Decisions, decisions!

Ok I seem to have come back on this cruise too late to contribute to any of the existing group efforts. So I have been trying to think of a way I can contribute and I think I may have sometihing. Feel free to pooh pooh it, but I was thinking we need a way on board to communicate with each other. I can make errasable marker boards that we could post on some doors - I was thinking one for each floor. If people wanted to drop off postings to me even, I would be willing to run around and post at the designated doors. Is this a good idea or not? Please feel free to brain storm this idea and refine as necessary!

Susie,
It sounds like a good plan to me:thumbsup2 I know some people had volunteered to be "message doors" at one point (maybe Debbis has a list of who?), but it would really help to have someone to post the mesasges and to have easy to spot matching boards.
Good thinking,

That is a great idea! I do have the list somewhere, but with so many people moving rooms we can look at it again!

Susie... if you would like to "coordinate" that great! I think we had cquick and Wrabitdad volunteer. There were a couple of others, but I do not seem to have them on my list.

Let me and/or Seaulater know and she will put it in the mini-navigator and I can make a notation on the roster.

Kelly,

Thanks for asking. My back is actually doing a little better...but it's hard for it to really fully heal because I have to coach every Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and that requires I do a certain amount of spotting and, unfortunately, is unavoidable. So I'm hoping to take it as easy as possible between now and the trip and then let it heal on our vacation more!

We gave up our suite. It was a hard decision as we had a midship cat 3 booked but DCL came out with new military rates yesterday afternoon and they were too good to pass up so we're now in 6568 (cat 6) for both cruises. We're looking forward to settling into the same cabin for 25 nights. I was dreading having to switch cabins between cruises. We've got enough moving going on right now.

Just thought of something today....
if the flight leaves at 10
and we need to be there 2 hrs before
and it takes 1/2 hour to travel to the airport

we need to clear customs at the port at 7:30
not much time for breakfast. hope DCL keeps that in mind.

That REALLY does cut it close! We have an 11":30 flight and I thought that was cutting it pretty close. Connie

I was just thinking about catching a cab or something from the Airport to the hotel we are staying at in Coco Beach. Anybody know if renting the car will be cheaper in the long run? Or easier? Any idea what a cab would cost from the airport to Coco Beach, we are staying at the Comfort Inn there.

Cheers!!

Pat

Pat,
I have never thought of taking a taxi so far (it is about 70 km from the airport to Coco Beach) so I'd imagine the fair would be quite steep. We have rented cars sevral times which is pretty easy and cheap (and gives you the flexibilty of stopping for dinner, hitting a Target for something you forgot to pack ,etc.). We haev also used Tiffany Town Car and had a private town car which was quick and easy and well run.
They cost $90 for a one way trip to Coco Beach from MCO and their website ishttp://www.tiffanytowncars.com/tc_rates.html
(also used happy limo once which most people love, our driver got lost--very odd experience over all).

Hi everyone!
Debbie, congrats on the 5000th posting!

We have not received our "surprise" in the mail yet either, but we are on the west coast, so I am not giving up hope yet....

You are all getting so much more done than me...I was considering even using our previous door signs for this cruise too, but if everyone is putting so much work into it, then maybe I should put a little extra effort. I just do not know how to do graphics that well....
I have not started packing, am not done with all of my trip bookings, I think this last month will go by faster than I thought.

If some of us want to contribute a few dollars. Staples has a Brother 2040 laser printer for $89. It comes with a 1500 page starter cartridge and prints 20 pages per minute. Add a couple reams of paper. If a few others wanted to partner up with me (typist preferred). Then we could print up our very own one page DIS Group Navigator and maybe some of the kids would volunteer to be paper boys and girls each morning before breakfast.

After the cruise we could leave it with a crew member for the staff to use.

OK, I said it was a dumb idea. Move along folks... nothing to see here.

Fish extender is on my list for today and putting a new zipper in DS8's black dress pants. I might even get to my dress today. I found neat fabric online yesterday for the vests I plan to make; just need to get the fabric ordered. Gee not much time left for all this sewing and I still need to get all my "junk" (crystal mostly) listed on ebay.

Yeah....actually last night I decided to hunt ebay too....i fyou do a search for "hanging pockets" and go through you'll find lots of Disney "fish extenders".....I found that one you posted but I also found 3 different styles of pooh and tigger ones, I found 2 other styles with Mickey, and I found the one that Debbie has with Mickey on each pocket....only it's on ebay in about 5 different colors. It looked to me like all the fish extenders on ebay were under $15. I'm not 100% decided that I won't make one anyway with a disney theme....but if I don't have my mind made up by early next week I may just buy one on ebay.

:grouphug: Welcome back Anna. I got up at 5:45am to check to see if you posted last night by midnight! I couldn't wait to see it you got it all done.:lmao: I'll bet you're tired today.

Now the three people who were originally on this cruise from day one, cancelled and rebooked (Elizabeth, Anna and Susie!)

OK, who is upgrading to Littleowensmommy's room?

Fish extenders: that is so funny - last night we typed in about a million different names for fish extenders and couldn't find them. Yesterday as I was slowly stalking the aisles of the 99cent store I kept laughing to myself about Chris trying to figure out what to ask for... since my store is pretty much only spanish speaking I was trying to figure out the same thing:rotfl2: But I thought I was so smart looking in the baby aisle

Ebay: we are big ebayers here too, sell tons of junk in this cluttered house and this week I've been buying Lmax everything and crocs - because every time Kathy (littleowensmommy) calls me I end up buying something new!

I hear you Eric. My back is almost back to normal, but I'm very hesitant every time I pick something up.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome back:grouphug: . The kids are really excited (oh, and I'm just a little excited too:banana:   :rotfl2: )

Having taken care of the travel side of things, now I am starting to be overwhelmed thinking about all the "other" stuff I need to get done. Luckily, I have this wonderful "one stop shopping" resource with this thread.:cheer2:

Two questions I thought of last night:

1. What have people decided to do about Euro's? Get them ahead of time, use and ATM at the port? Just use dollars? Does anyone know if guest services will have a money exchange (kinda doubt it.)

2. Since we are 4 booked into a cat 12 broom closet, I know we will be at least upgrade to a cat 11 broom closet :rotfl2: . Do all category 11's have the steamer trunk storage or just certain ones?

I had thought of more stuff last night, but now I've forgotten them:confused3 I'm sure it will come to me later. If anyone is in Southern CA in the next 4 weeks, I will be that crazy lady muttering to herself, writing notes in a little notebook so she won't forget next time. :rotfl2:

Thanks for the reminder.....Jason has been dragging his feet on Euros...he's our cash person on these trips. I think I do remember someone mentioning that DCL was going to do currency exchange...but that the rate was questionable......maybe???

Remembered another one! I think there is a children's group, but I don't remember who was in charge of that?:confused3 I would like to get my kids to participate in that, if we could. My older girls are really quite shy, but I am hoping that with fewer kids onboard they will be more comfortable going to the clubs this cruise. (Not big club fans on our first cruise:sad2: )

Don't forget to check the exchange at your AAA (or CAA office)-they don't do cash but they do foreign exchange travellers checks (Visa cash cards). Sometimes they can give you a better rate than the banks do!

You broke us too. Went to Staples last weekend and bought a multiple page file folder. :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Bob

okay...i broke down and got an accordion file with a notepad pocket and other pockets too! it has been great for all my info...i notmally travel with a couple folders but this will be nice having it all in one place!

 Cupcake

 i have not recieved the surprise either!??

as for the parrot...use velcro! the kind that is sticky (not the sew on kind!) so you can stick one side to your shirt and the other to the parrot!!!

We've got enough moving going on right now.

i know...it is hard giving up your room but these rates are really hard to beat...curious...do you mind posting what the military rates are?

We got some really neat erasable white boards last time we cruise with Disney. I plan to have one up on my door, you can write me as amny notes as nessary......or not necessary:wizard:

at my local dollar tree they have white boards for a dollar as well as large mickey and pooh stickers....we bought a board that was half white, half bulletin board for people to leave messages too and bought these stickers to decorate it! i will be an info door is you want me too!!!

Move along folks... nothing to see here.

count me in...i have a 13 year old that always needs to run off energy!

.

No as Jack! pirate:

i could handle Jack as a pirate but he must bathe first!!! :rotfl2:

Sitting at the airport -using free internet to stay caught up...

dumb computer question...i just bought a notebook computer and they said it has a wireless card in it so can i just start using the internet anywhere they offer it free or do i need something else???

:rotfl2:

TIA

Anna

first...PASSPORTS!!!!!

some cat 11 have steamer trunks, mainly the sideways ones, but most do not! i have heard some people talking about getting those fabric shelves that hang in the closet for more space....don't forget you can use the shelves above the TV...they are really big! just move the blankets to the closet shelf with the life jackets...there are about 6 drawers in the vanity/desk and drawers in each nightstand...you might want to bring an over the door shoe holder for undies and socks for kids..etc

we are getting euros ahead of time...our bank told us we have to order them about 2 weeks in advance...some people mentioned that most credit cards we use in europe charge an addl fee for euro conversion but capital one does not...i still need to check this out with them....we are a family of 4 and we are planning to take about 70 Gibraltar pounds and about 200 euros for both barcelona exploring and tenerife all on our own...we are taking the seville excursion in cadiz....

Well then I hope it gets to us BEFORE the trip.

DCL apparently informed our TA yesterday that they are not going to send our cruise materials to her in time to send them to us before we leave for Florida (they would have to get to her by April 28 or 29 so she coudl turn around and send them to us to be sure that we got them before we left Rochester on May 4th)....so they're sending all our cruise documents and luggage tags and stuff directly to Animal Kingdom Lodge where we have to pick them up.

That REALLY does cut it close! We have an 11":30 flight and I thought that was cutting it pretty close. Connie
I don't think flight times are going to be a problem on the 26th. Here is an email that I have from DCL:

"When the Disney Magic arrives in Barcelona on Friday, 5/25/07, Guests
are able to debark to enjoy the city starting around 7:00 AM. The
gangway will be operating 24 hours, so guests may leave and return
to/from the ship at any time. "

So it sounds like we can leave anytime we choose on the 26th.

Welcome back Anna! :cheer2: Woo hoo!

I like the printer idea, but I can't commit cash just yet. I'm still trying to find the money to get us home. God will provide; I'm not worried! :woohoo:

Fish extender is on my list for today and putting a new zipper in DS8's black dress pants. I might even get to my dress today. I found neat fabric online yesterday for the vests I plan to make; just need to get the fabric ordered. Gee not much time left for all this sewing and I still need to get all my "junk" (crystal mostly) listed on ebay.

Have a great day everyone. I'm off to do my morning "stuff" and then it's off to the dentist today.

Oh yes still need to finish fish extender as so far it has 1 pocket! That's on the list along with gifts I decided to make! At least I've finished the magnets for the stateroom door so that's one less thing!

Europe customs isn't like US customs as US tends to be more strict. I know in the UK its just lets see your passport grab your cases and go so I'm assuming it wont be identicle to the normal one but it will occur to some extent I assume.

CACruisin: I'm with you on trying to remember what I still needed to do once I got all the logisitics in place. Here's the things I thought of:
1. PM kpros about lanyards
2. PM xaggie94gigem about bracelets (if it's not too late)
3. PM Scott if you are planning on attending the wine and cheese party
4. PM Debbie to get back on the roster
4. order the repo t-shirts
Anything else?

Printer: I'd be willing to help out on this. Is this a portable size? I can't imagine lugging a printer with me on the plane.

Erasable door boards: Sounds like this is a go, so I will start making them. I have one of these on my refrigerator, so I thought I would model mine after that. I have the Disney Magic Artist Deluxe software to do the design with. Then I can laminate it and attach magnets. I thought I would also attach a pen holder. The one on my refrigerator has a little piece of vinyl formed into a loop and attached with a grommet. I also have a grommet maker, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Ken: If you want to send me the artwork with the repo logo, I'll see if I can work that into the design for the erasable boards also.

Guess I also need to start working on door signs for my own door also. So instead of looking for a job, looks I'm going to be sitting here with my Disney software. Oh well, the price we pay.

Susie, I was one of the people to have a door message board too in case you are keeping track - also we figured out which bag we will put at our door. Had to choose one that we could live with losing if someone moves or grabs it. Our door will be a busy one since we have 60 door signs waiting to print and laminate, but my printer (first time in a year) is streaking my colors UGH!!!! I'll have a big laptop to hook up for printing if needed.

Well.....on the surface the fish extenders are for people to put goodies and notes and mail and things into because that fish-clip thing outside your door is really limited in what it can hold. More importantly, however, the fish extenders are to show how fancy and prepared for a fabulous vacation we all are! :)

I have officially decided to make our fish extender. I had a fair chunk of fun tropical colored Mickey fabric left over after finishing our tropical shirts this morning....so I decided that I would use that fabric to inspire our fish extender....although I also have an idea that I might use to make ours stand out from the crowd....I just have to see if the ideas in my head are workable and can become reality before we go.

I emailed Disney again about early flights on the 26th. Here is the response

"The ship is expected to be cleared from Customs at approximately 6:45
AM. If you have made arrangements to fly out before 10:30 AM, please
plan to debark the ship first thing in the morning in order to make your
flight.

Also, Guests who have arranged their own air are asked to provide Disney

information online."

It's not exactly a lot more information, but it does answer the customs question.

ACTUALLY....I really DID make one of our sets of ties. Because ties are for men all the Disney ties mainly have the male Disney characters on them...or are very masculine....and I wanted us to be very equal opportunity...so I really looked and looked for some ties with Tink or the princesses on them (in my fantasy world I would love to have found a beautiful tie that had Ariel swimming right up the entire length of the front of it!!!)....but I couldn't find any....and then I found this fun satin-look Tinkerbell fabric...so I bought the fabric and then went to a thrift store I bought an old ugly tie for 50 cents and dissected it to make my own pattern ......and VOILA!! We now have beautiful matching Tinkerbell Ties!!! Just wait til you see them...I'm particularly proud of them! :tinker:

Just rebooked the Hyatt for the night before-they are down to $160 plus taxes.-You might want to check their site.

Thank you, I am going to check on that right now! By the way, USAir was great and we actually got better flights then before. It took over one hour to get everything squared away and my heart was beating fast, but it is taken care of. I still don't understand why Iberia is nervous about new cruise ships and flights. They just dropped my flight for no reason. I am so excited about Seville. We did it for the Christopher Columbus thing too and the lunch - ha ha! Anybody doing the Scavenger Hunt in Barcelona? That sounded super fun!:) I don't think DCL will cut back on anything. I have 3 groups of friends that have told me to tell them everything about it because if we like it, they will do it the next time it is offered.

Hi,

Was the miltary rate only for active duty types? There was a posting a while back about rates for retired military for the repo but when I called DCL they said only for active military. :confused3

After retiring from the CG Reserve and with all the rate dropping in the lower categories it would be nice to see some reduction at the higher levels. Although we're going no matter what.

Maybe some nice onboard credit ($500, $1,000), wouldn't cost Disney that much.

Not to bring up religion or all that represents--cuz I already like everyone here and don't want to cause problems--but is anyone here LDS? Just curious. It was the SLC comment that sparked curiousity. Now don't kill the cat, please!

Can you believe this? I thought Orlando would have the WORST drivers!
Where are the safest drivers in the country?
A new magazine ranking says Des Moines, Iowa.
But the cities that follow on the list from Men’s Health Magazine may be somewhat puzzling. After Des Moines are Jersey City, New Jersey; New York City; Yonkers, New York, and San Francisco.

And where are the worst drivers?
Columbia, South Carolina, leads the list, followed by St. Louis; Greensboro, North Carolina; Jackson, Mississippi, and Cheyenne, Wyoming

Oh I passed my test, and the colors were flying, part of process was to log a GPs coordinate, and I used our mid Atlantic point. LOL

The way I got it figured, using a constant speed leaving Castaway Cay, we should hit the mid Atlantic point about 1 am on the 17th. But then you figure that DCL will leave at top speed to allow a little room for error at the Canary Islands, so maybe the late afternoon or evening of the 16th would be more likely.

Everyone have a great weekend.

We got a good one way flight back from Barcelona on Aer Lingus for her (we are actually staying a few days post cruise so she will be going back separately). Interestingly, Kayak had that same flight yesterday but not today, but when we went directly to the Aer Lingus site, it was still available. Moral: Kayak may not be a good one stop option.

I was gone all day and I have to say there was less to catch up on here than I thought there would be! Still took me 45 mintues though.

TROPICAL NIGHT--If DCL doesn't schedule one (surely they will) we should declare one anyway and all wear our tropical garb and leave the other cruisers to wonder what announcement they missed.

Some friends of Hank and Jan's booked two cabins yesterday (taking kids and grandkids). I spent a very long time finding them flights, hotels, rental cars, etc. getting them the info. they need to get passports expeidted the whole 9 yeards. If they end up getting upgraded now while I sit in cat 11:sad2: That is what my TA thinks will happen though she said she is making sure DCL knows they are our firends and only booked because of us in a nattempt to ge tDCL to reward their loyal cruisers. They will have a 10 year old girl and 8 and 6 year old boys (not part of this group so do not need to be added to gift list--these are not computer people, never cruises, will be so overwhelmed with what DCL offers they do not need extra for this first time around--or so I am told) so there are some more playmates to be had. Not that I don't want good things to happen for them (and all of the DISsers); I just don't like being left out. It is NICE to be introducing more people to the Magic of Disney cruising.

It seems more and more people are booking. Maybe they will fill this ship yet!

Yes, you are correct:thumbsup2 Well the entire thing is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It seems we always end up friends with an LDS family anywhere we move (though not yet in NH).

Hi everyone! I have finally managaded to catch up! 300 plus pages and it has taken more nights than I care to admit but now I feel like I know many of you very well! I started back at the beginning and it has been great fun seeing the excitement of the early booking days, the euphoria of some people with "one year to go " and the relentless countdown! Having cruised many times before I am so excited - I never knew that this kiind of site existed! It is really adding to the adventure. A bit of bio for you - we (DW, DD and myself) live in the mountains of British Columbia, Canada. This will be our first Disney cruise and we are doing it for our 25th wedding anniversary (May15th) and our DD's 14th birthday (May 22nd). It is a complete surprise to both of the girls but I am not sure if I will be able to keep it that way much longer without blurting something out. We will see!
I have tried to make contact by pm about the bracelets but cannot get it to go through but we would like 2 adults and 1 youth if you dont mind.

DW and I will gladly participate in the secret santa! Let us know more!

DD will be 14 and I would like to put her in the kids gifts!

We have not received our secret gift or our air program - we did the disney fly/cruise.

We enjoy getting involved - euchre or whatever. Will even join Erik dancing with the kids if necessary!

We were on the ship on the video where the waves were braking over the observation deck ( over 80 feet). It was Legend of the Seas across the Tasman sea! Looking forward to a smoother trip this time!

I am so happy to have caught up to the pack and did not realize I had read over 5000 posts ( give or take a few!) The excitement is contagious!!!!!

I am sure I will have lots of questions but enough for now!

we have no street address postal here so DCL said they would courier everything and it should arrive by the end of April - which is paniking us a bit as we leave here at midnight on the 3rd of May...

oh well we live in hope.

needless to say no surprises have arrived here but i don't actually expect them to (ever).

we really do seem to be filling up a bit - but if you check the DCL site there are still so many room choices available in each category we should all still have plenty of space.

How accurate do we need this to be? A ten second count down sort of thing? Mid point between where? Port Canaveral and Cadiz? or Cast Away Cay and Tenerife? I think the latter makes most sense if you think of the actual crossing as the 6 1/2 day trip between the last western land fall and the first eastern one.

The ship might not follow a true great circle due to shipping lane and or weather issues so the only real way to do this would be to decide on start and end points and then calculate the GCR distance to each of those from your current position and when the distances become equal you are half way. As we get close we would need a laptop and a GPS receiver to pull this off.

Maybe as you said we should put the bug in Disney's ear (if you haven't already) to plan a mid point bash. (what if it is at 4 AM?)

I do have a Delorme GPS/usb receiver that is very small and with a bit of programming I think I could make it do a mid point count down.

Sounds like a good use for the Jumbo Tron. A mid point count down clock on a scroll at the bottom of the screen.

Let me know what we want to use as the starting and ending points and I will experiment...

My new Conde Nast Traveler had a very timely piece on the Value Added Tax refund forms that you can apply for with Global Refund at the airport after you clear customs.

1 - Global Refund is at the Barcelona Airport so they will handle your refunds
2 - When you fill out the form there is a refund number that appears under the bar code at the top right-hand corner of Global Refund's form
3 - Right this number down and keep it somewhere safe
4 - If you refund goes missing that number is the ONLY way to track it!!
5 - Since the VAT can be 15-25% on top of your purchase price and we appear to have some professional and semi-professional shoppers on board, this could add up to a healthy bit of money!!
6 - You MUST keep all your receipts and present them to get your refund

Hope this was helpful for everyone!!!

Well, we paid $1,800 for a direct flight from Barcelona to Newark. I am going to check around on other airlines because of what other people have written. We are spending a couple days in NYC so I have a certain airport I need to fly into. USAir had a 12:10 flight into Philly which sounded good and that is what my dad and MIL is taking.

Try kayak.com. We got my mom a 1-way Aer Lingus flight from Barcelona to Chicago thru Dublin for 1/3 of what you are paying. Note that we found the flight thru Kayak and then it disappeared the next day but was still available when we booked directly w/ Aer Lingus, so Kayak is not infallible. However, it should still give you a good idea of who is flying routes you like so you can check directly with them too.

Also, if you are flying into NYC, any of the three airports are viable in terms of getting easily into the city, which is where I assume you would be going. That's Newark (EWR), Kennedy (JFK), or LaGuardia (LGA). If you need any help with getting from there to where you need to go, let me know, my dh is a frequent business traveler and lived in NYC for a few years and I am sure he can help you. But all of them have easy transportation to the city.

cupcake makes a good point, one day air fares will be one rate and the next a different then the next back again. Also, certain days of the week are better for buying airfare than others. Who is our TA on this thread? she may know the answer.

Mothers day of course May 13th (but everyone knew that)

I also like the CC and Tenerife as points for a Mid Point calc. The Jumbo Tron would be totally KEWL!!!!!!

If it is at 4:00 am we set alarms, and have a call down list,

Do let me know what ya come up with, I will have two GPS units with me a both Garmin, a Map76csx and a Vista CX. Now you have given me a great reason to get the new laptop, KEWL!!!Thanks

I would think they should sound the claxon when ever it is.

Yell if ya need the lat and long of either.

What WONDERFUL outfits! I think we saw you at MNSCHP. I think it would be great if you wore them on the cruise! AT least one night!

Thank you; We had such a blast the first year that we did a repeat performance the next year - we are not doing it this year since we have so many other trips planned. We are going to miss the MNSSHP.

I don't think we are bringing them. The "canes" have to be hand carried and really gave Jet Blue an issue the first time we brought them home.

I just don't seem to have the time to make any costumes.

My hunny and I were so lucky - we found pirate costumes from Halloween on sale for 75% off some time in January...so we are all set for about 10.00 each!!! I think those are all the costumes we are bringing. Luggage space is limited and I would rather pack more clothing that can mix and match.

My boss was telling me yesterday that he was in Barcelona in Dec a few years back and it was 70 degrees. My sidebar weather monitor that I have set for Barcelona says it is 57 today and sunny.

One of our favorite hobbies is bargain shopping - we go to all the major stores and hit the clearance racks...I got shorts for 2.00, tops for .50 etc etc etc. The costumes were a great find - we had to search for 30 minutes to find all the parts and pieces but it is worth it - we match!!

An Idea instead of a question!

I love Disney, but HATE the boat's sheets and blankets:sad2: ...so...I'm going out to buy some colorful sheets in a thread count that I can enjoy a fluffy blanky. Two weeks is a long time with icky sheets. I'll put them in one of those space bags--shouldn't be a problem with weight allowance, as the baoys wear little clothes, and the diapers we use will lighten the load.

If the airlines has a fit, I'll leave them. No biggie for a more comfortable two weeks, right. :thumbsup2 (Oh, and I will wash them :laundy: at the half way point. My big celebration activity.:cool1: )

Greetings all!!

Well thank goodness you weren't TERRIBLY chatty....I took a stint offline to work on projects. Now I've given myself a reputation that I have to live up to....so I was working on our tropical shirts and fish extender.

I know I said we weren't going to do buttons on our shirt to save me the troubel....but then last night we found MICKEY SHAPED buttons in the EXACT colors that are in the fabric I made our shirts from....it was a sign from the universe that Erik needed to relearn how to make button holes and put buttons on the darn shirts....so I did.

Then I got to work on the fish extender....and let's just say that I was ALWAYS the kid who took more cake than he could eat at the birthday party....I think our fish extender is too wide now....although it's very very fancy!! I incorporated a dry erase board and a bulletin board into a hanging fabric thing with the pockets of a traditional fish extender.....the problem is that in my zeal to make it lovely I might have made it too wide!! It's almost 13 inches wide...so we're hoping that it will fit. I know that all of your fish extenders are about 7.5 inches wide...and the pictures make it look like there's a few inches on each side of clearance...so we're hoping it will fit. If not, however we may have to bring a contingency plan and hang it over hte door itself!

As for the ties...maybe we'll have to have a fashion show at some point and show all the ties on one night...so nobody misses out! :rotfl:

I've been working on the design for the message board and here is what I have tentatively come up with:

http://home.earthlink.net/~cpsnyder/MsgBoard.htm

It is 8/12" x 11". The logo is in the middle, but I faded it enough so it is just visible and doesn't interfere with anything written on it. It looks darker on the image than it did when it was printed. I had to leave a couple inches at the top to attach the pen holder. Opinions? Suggestions?

Susie, the message board looks great :thumbsup2

Thanks everyone for the input on my "To do" list.
* We have passports already (kids and I "tagged along" 3 years ago when DH had a business trip to Italy  )
* I think I have PM'd all the appropriate people for various things.
* Got trip insurance done - great rate for 1 adult and 3 kids!
* Looked for fish extender type thingie at 99 cent store - Nada :sad2:
* Will place order with Cafe Press later today
* booked the evening Flamenco excursion in Cadiz.
* Gibraltar we will do on our own, and maybe Tenerife as well :confused3 . Wanted to book the Chocolate Museum in Barcelona, but it was not available.
* talked to DD11's waterpolo coach and DD3's preschool and let them know we would be gone. Also called DD3's dance school to withdraw her May 1. It is closed for spring break, but I left a message.
* Still need to talk to DD11 and DD12's schools. That is not going to be fun! :sad2:
I also need to talk to the swim coaches. DD11's coach will be ok, but I'm kinda afraid of DD12's swim coach... she doesn't like it when the kids miss practice.

It is great to check things off the list, but for every item I complete, I seem to add 3 more  .
Scoobypop: count me in on Robert's "organization binder" presentation while on board, but I really need it right now! :rotfl2:

Need to go take care of Easter Bunny stuff now, or I will have one unhappy 3 year old (and 11 and 12 year olds :rotfl2: ) Sunday morning!

Okay, let's see how much I remember to respond to. . . I took the afternoon off the boards to dye Easter eggs with the kids (a project not related to the cruise--it felt so odd).

Susie--The message boards look great! They will be an awesome way for the whole group to keep in touch.:thumbsup2

DizzneyDAnn--Padalyn is right about the sheets. They are so much nicer now than they used to be.:cool1:

Anna--I sympathize with you. Just tell the swim coach your DD can practice along side the boat every day:laughing: Rio's dance school was none too happy that he will miss the technical rehearsals for the recital. He will make the dress rehearsal though and they JUST MOVED PICTURE WEEK TO THE WEEK WE RETURN. I love my photos of him in costume surrounded by his harem (he's usually the only boy, though there are two others in hip hop this year!). Luckily Marika's karate school was really nice and let her go to double classes to get in enough time to earn her blue belt in time for April's test. They aren't running tests in June and we are gone for the May tests. So she woudl have been delayed two months otherwise.

Erik--the Mickey shirts will have to be included in the fashion show also;)
I am trying to visualize a fish extender/dry erase board/bullitan board combo. Between shirts, ties and ultra fancy fish gear you can quit your day job and live well jus tselling cool toys to all of us DCL freaks:rotfl2: If it doesn't fit on the fish you can always hang it off of the room number circle.

Yes - we still need volunteers for all decks except deck 2.

For all that think I am talented, just get a copy of Disney's Magic Artist Deluxe software. I just checked and it is available on Amazon as "used and new" for $3.99. I got it because it was recommended for making DCL door signs. It has two sections - one is sort of a dumbed down version of photo shop but with the capability of adding lots of extras. My grandson likes to fill the whole screen with animated worms (go figure). The other section is stock images in about 20 different themes. Each of the themes include backdrops, dressed up images of the 6 main Disney characters (the fab 5 plus Daisy), and some additional items like beach balls in the beach theme or pirate chests in the pirates theme. You can import your own images also.

For the bottom of the board, I took the boat deck from the travel theme and added Mickey and Minnie from the Mardi Gras theme.

One disadvantage that I encountered with this project is that you can only design in landscape and I wanted to use portrait. So I did the design and exported it to a file and then imported it into photoshop to finish it up. The other main disadvantage is that help is not available interactively, but in a separate file on the CD. And a lot of stuff is not intuitively obvious - so you really need the help file. I found the file by accident. It was not mentioned at all in the instructions.

That is so neat.:thumbsup2
Wish I had that talent. I'm just a trial and error plugger.:lmao:

Good Calculation , Bob, I think we will have to get the info from a crew member to be most accurate. Maybe DCL will toss a party after they haev read the idea here :goodvibes :goodvibes things like that have happened before.

In the old days it was called the "point of no return" kinda like the John Wayne Movie the High and the Mighty. I love walking through an airport whistling the theme song, not many folks get it:rolleyes1 :rolleyes1

Kinda what I was thinking.:scared1:

Congrats on talking your son Michael into the cruise. That will be so nice for all of you and now you can go to Palo too:love: .

www.sidestep.com and www.kayak.com are both great places to start for cheap airfare. When I was looking around, it seemed like Boston and JFK tended to have the cheapest airfares. Swiss and Aer Lingus seemed to come up a lot. Try different airports into the US and then look for a discount carrier from there. Spirit airlines is having $8 fares to various different places and southwest is also having some good sales.

Goodmorning all and welcome Greg and his secret family... do give them time enough to prepare. The preparation is what is killing everyone with how much there is to plan.

I've been trying to keep track of our special events during this cruise. Will everyone check this list and fill in the blanks that I may have missed.

roserae Ours is May 22nd. 15th wedding anniversary

May is our anniversary month as well! May 2 will be 14 amazing years! Hoping for 50 more of the same! OOPs There having a baby instead!!!

This will be our first Disney cruise and we are doing it for our 25th wedding anniversary (May15th) and our DD's 14th birthday (May 22nd). GREG

Thanks for doing this. I am keeping track on the spreadsheet so I can give it to Linda for the mini-navigator. I did add a couple of things to the list.

OH6 volunteered for deck 7 and they are centrally located so that is probably good.

eller - you really are in the very back. Unless someone is using the secret staircase into the buffet they are not likely to go back that far. Anyone else want to volunteer for deck 8? If we don't get a centrally located door, maybe we can go with one aft and one forward. That might be best for deck 6 also.

Where are the deck 5 volunteers? I know there aren't very many of you but you are all close together at least. I have myself, Elizabeth, and Kelly for deck 2. I don't know where Elizabeth is located, but Kelly is centrally located. I suspect that since I'm travelling solo, I won't actually be upgraded so I'm probably going to be forward on deck 2.

There are some weddings already being planned (and some sweet stories:love: Rick's story abotu Joe's reaction had me almost as choked up as your story about you and Jason at Palos on your anniversary ). Reuters ran it:

Disney opens Fairy Tale Weddings to gay couples
Thu Apr 05 23:21:16 UTC 2007

By Gina Keating

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The Walt Disney Co. has changed its policy to allow same-sex couples to participate in a popular Fairy Tale Wedding program it runs mainly at its two U.S. resorts and cruise line, a Disney spokesman said on Thursday.

Disney previously had allowed gay couples to organize their own weddings or commitment ceremonies at rented meeting rooms at the resorts, but had barred them from purchasing its Fairy Tale Wedding package and holding the event at locations at Disneyland and Walt Disney World that are set aside specifically for weddings.

"We are updating our Fairy Tale Wedding guidelines to include commitment ceremonies," Disney Parks and Resorts spokesman Donn Walker said. "This is consistent with our policy of creating a welcoming, respectful and inclusive environment for all of our guests."

Walker said the change was prompted by "an inquiry from a guest that asked about this service."

Disney had allowed gay couples to take part in its vow renewals program but excluded them from buying wedding packages by requiring a valid marriage license from California or Florida, which do not permit or recognize gay marriages.

Last month, gay Web site AfterElton.com criticized Disney for not allowing same-sex couples to participate in the Fairy Tale Weddings and Honeymoons program.

Disney's Fairy Tale Wedding packages start at $8,000 and include a wedding planner, the ceremony, food and beverages, flowers and table decorations.

The Lavish Wedding Option also includes a ride to the ceremony in the Cinderella coach, costumed trumpeters heralding the couple's arrival, and attendance by Mickey and Minnie Mouse characters dressed in formal attire.

Disney has come under fire from religious conservatives, including the Southern Baptist Convention, which have accused the company of promoting a gay agenda.

The groups, which lifted an eight-year boycott of Disney in 2005, had criticized the company for such corporate policies as giving health benefits to same-sex partners of employees, allowing "Gay Day" celebrations at its theme parks and airing a prime time television show on its ABC network featuring openly gay comedian Ellen DeGeneres.

"We are not in the business of making judgments about the lifestyle of our guests. We are in the hospitality business and our parks and resorts are open to everyone," Walker said.

Thanks...I'm happy enough with it....unless it's too big! It's not as neatly finished as I would normally like (or as our shirts or Tink ties are)...but I was really making it up as I went with just various scraps of fabric and no pattern at all so there was a lot of piece-mealing and trial and error.....but it's the effort that counts! (And Jason hasn't a crafty or creative bone in his poor body so he was incredibly impressed....and since it's for our room, that's good enough for me! )

I would make more disney ties EXCEPT I foudn that ties made out of regular cotton fabric don't make very nice ties....so it's hard to find Disney fabric that is satin or silk or has the sheen of a "real" tie....that's why we were lucky to find the Tink fabric we did. I found TONS of great Nemo fabric (not shiny), but when I tried to make a tie out of it I wasn't happy with how the ties looked.

I'm not making the rules (just the message boards). But my thought would be that whoever wanted to announce something would run around and update the boards - or call me and I would do it for them. An alternative might be to call each of the 5 rooms and ask them to post it.

I think what we have so far is (for the midship locations):
Deck 2 - Elizabeth (2545) - not too far off midship
Deck 5 - Debbie (5024) - not midship, but there are no deck 5 midship rooms
Deck 6 - Kathy (6568)
Deck 7 - OH 6 (7568)
Deck 8 - Erik & Jason? (8056)

We had several other volunteers if these don't work.

Should we go ahead and post this on page 143 and update as necessary? We want to make sure it makes it into the navigator.

I also plan on making a couple extras in case one gets stolen. I'll bring extra pens also.

Thanks

LOVE the fish extenders - deluxe and otherwise. Might have to drop into the fabric store and see what I can find ... yikes, one more thing for the "to do" list!

Came up with some more questions:
1. Since my DH is not travelling with us, do I need any sort of special documentation for the kids?:confused3
2. I really want to bring a bottle (or 2!) of sherry back for my DH. But I don't know how to pack it in my suitcase so I don't have drippy, wet sherry-smelling clothes? Suggestions?

Need to run now. Family is watching HSM for Family Movie night!  (Small confession... I've never actually seen it so I suggested it for tonight:rolleyes1 . Older kids have seen it, but mom hasn't!)

Of course you realize that this power may have fallen into the wrong hands now....the power of posting pics to the DisBoards....now I may feel compelled to post all kinds of crazy pics on here....like Jason and I riding Buzz Lightyear in our "halloween costumes" at the Not So Scary Halloween Party...or pictures of my kitty!!

MUWAHAHAHAHA:stir:

OK! I get it! You're losing control! I won't post any more pics, although I will say I love your fish extender!

Thanks

Page 143 has been updated.

Anna,
I frequently take my kids to Mexico without my DH (he has no desire to spend a week visiting my parents--even if it is in Puerto Vallarta! ). When only one parent is leaving the country with children you do need to have a notarized letter from the other parent saying it is okay. Something along the lines of
"To Whom It May Concern:
My wife _____________ and children ________ will be traveling on board the Disney Magic to _______________ on these dates with an expected return to the US on _______________. This trip out of the country so being taken with my full knowledge and consent."

Single parents can bring a copy of a court order granting them custody, a copy of the other parent's death certificate, the child's birth certificate showing "father unknown" etc.

There is a form on the DCL website to print and have notarized for people taking their grandchild, a friend of the family, etc.

I know many people go on DCL without this and do not seem to have any issues. And, we have been on many flights where it is never asked for. :rolleyes1 On the other hand, we have been on many flights where officials at every stop along the way (both leaving and returning to the US) ask to see it. So, my advice would be get it done (not hard to do and MUCH better safe than stuck in Orlando and sorry).

Hello, all!

We are trending heavily in favor of exchanging onboard. Thus, I will keep the list open for another week or so and post a few more reminders. If anyone else wants to mail ahead, please PM your info to me over the weekend. I will match up the mail ahead folks early next week so be on the lookout!

Here's a link to the Secret Mickey info:

I just clicked my own link and it doesn't work! How about this in case it's not just me...

I have done an update to the roster. Maybe this weekend I will indicate which rooms are message rooms. It will also be in the mini-navigator.

Wow...how fascinating...and somewhat disconcerting (since I gather this kind of documentation is necessary because of issues like child trafficking and kidnapping...by strangers and members of one's own family). It would never have occurred to me to even think of such a thing!!
