thanks for all the well wishes everyone!!!
we've been trying since before we booked this cruise, but it just wasn't working. this was our last month of trying before the cruise. we've always wanted 4, but i would have been happy with the 3 i have. my parents and dh's parents of course will have other thoughts!! i'm sure they will have something to say about it messing up our cruise plans, but little do they know that i was praying and hoping....and TBA wheeler baby is already booked for passage!!!! he/she was listed on our ressie jan 31st!!
the kids will be very excited when they find out. they've recently been commenting on how i should have another baby. i think it must be a 6th sense of thiers or something. they will be 10, 8, and 5 at the time of birth....wider age range than i wanted between the last one, but i'll take it!!!
That is awesome news, Shannon! Your kids are a perfect age to have a new baby brother or sister. Congratulations!!
There's 8 years between my oldest and the next one, and 11 years between my oldest and my youngest. We'd been working on it all those years, but I guess God did it the way He wanted it done! Amazingly, all are close friends now that they are 25, 17 & 14.
Congrats again!!!!

Yep ...we Leave Early morning on the 16th ..dang .....Well dont forget we are planning a DIS meet at DL the weekend of March 14 ..Dont forget ...I think a nice lunch or dinner in DTD or DL at the Blue Bayou would be the perfect setting for us Pirates ....
pirate:
Sounds like a plan.
March 2008? Count us in. Somehow we'll find the time to get down there.
Sounds like a plan. We will have to see how many West Coasters we can round up for this. :cool1:
WE are in!!!!! This can be our West Coast Mini-Meet & celebrate the Captain's B'day!!
Ouch twist my arm some more ;) .......I'm sure I can persuade DW and DD to come.
Andy

If you'll have us - then count us in! I promise not to post many images from the meet. I'll limit it to the stuff that's only good for petty extortion and low intensity racketeering... OK?
Add me to the list please :wave2:

This is the list of pirates that have responded "Aye" to the DL mini-meet in March of 2008. I know that there are more of us West Coast pirates out there so more are possible. I will mark the calendar on the website.

we just found out we are expecting wheelerkidz #4 then!!!!!!!:cool1:
Congratulations, Shannon!!! Luv those little babies
On our last cruise it was easy to recognize one of the DIS Cabins by the way the doors were decorated.
Funny you should say that...that is how I knew that a family that I had made a gift bag for had moved. I thought, there is no way a DISer would have a plain old, undecorated door like that ;) . Problem was I had pre-made all my bags with family names and cabin numbers and I ended up with some without a home :upsidedow
I wonder if any think of me as more than just the clowning around sort ... sometimes. I'll be sure to tell my parole officer I've been recognized as a decent sort again! <chuckles> And NO.... I don't have a parole officer - for those who pause to reflect a little more then they should on my remarks...
You just crack me up with your "clowing around". Love all your posts and pitcures
Sure, Crash, you are now IN CHARGE of everything you suggested! ;)
HA!!! This is what happens to me when I make suggestions at PTO Meetings. I have long since learned to keep my big mouth shut :rotfl:
I know there has been many posts about getting penpals for our various offspring & wondered whether it was worth trying to specifically co-ordinate something? What are people's views & how viable do we think it would be? I'm daft enough to say I'd be happy to co-ordinate a list as I know my DD (7) enjoys corresponding with others prior to the cruise.
Last cruise there was a sererate thread for the kids. DD is not much into emailng or communcating via computer, but she did post occasionally. I guess she was more of a "lurker" :rotfl: . She really enjoys meeting people in person though.
Fish Extender = roughly 8" wide set of pockets that you hang from your Mail Fish, so that all the DISers who want to can put stuff in the pockets. There ought to be a link around somewhere...
Wasn't there an Ebay'er/DISer that makes these??? I have always cruised during Christmas so have used a stocking for my Fish Extender in the past.

That's wonderful news! This stirs my memory of when my spouse declared we were expecting a child! The first time she was screaming from the bathroom and I thought she had an emergency or hurt herself - on seeing her OK but hysterical - I started to turn away and she demanded of me: "do you see this?! Look at this ... is that a line?IS THAT A LINE?".... I glanced and said "ohh.. yeah, I see it"... I paused with a blank unawareness and began to turn again to go... and she stammered: "it's as dark a line as (and so and so)"... and that's when her expression and gesturing hit me ... and I understood.

Has anyone received correspondence from DCL regarding an additional $100 per person and a revised balance due?
Per letter from DCL:
The Panama Canal has recently adjusted the per person amount charged for Government Taxes and Fees to transit the canal. As a result, there is a need to collect an additional $100.00 per person for your party. We have enclosed a new confirmation, which reflects the revised balance due.
I have been keeping up with this thread as best I can but don't recall anyone discussing this. That is an additional $500 for our family

Thanks Michelle, no one has mentioned this. When did you get this? This would definitely be a downer especially for larger families. That sound like a lot for a port tax/canal tax.

Shoot!
The Panamanians just tagged my party for another $3000! And on the Magic with a registry capacity of 1,754 passengers this will ding us ALL for a collective $175,400! Maybe Disney will do something nice for us to offset this developement? I say they offer free RUM and Shirley Temples for all 15 nites on the sailing?! I'll take a Shirley Temple with an extra cherry please.

We received it in the mail yesterday, 7/21 directly from DCL. It came with the letter I quoted and a revised confirmation.
It seemed steep to us as well considering we didn't have to pay it on the 2005 repo.

Wasn't the canal still under US control in 05.....? Now that the Panamanian gov has control, maybe this tax is their way to stick "it" to us foreigners.
Guess i will have spend $300 less in drinks/pictures/shore excursions....

This was on some of the other boards too......
It just stinks!  I have read and re-read the fine print and can't see anything about who bears the risk of increased fees.
I would strongly encourage everyone to call DCL when you get this letter and hem and haw (nice way of saying witch and complain?) and when the regular phone answerer can't help you, ask to talk to a manager and demand that they show you exactly where it says in clear plain English that they can do this. Maybe if enough call, they might do something about it....:confused3

http://www.partirencroisiere.fr/images/navire/big/big_Costa-Fortuna.jpg
We were wandering around the web looking at cruises - one my Dad wanted to do in February and while doing it we noticed a deal with Costa. They're doing Eastern sailings on the Fortuna with kids sailing FREE... and the 7 nite sailings start around $399 for the first two. Thats' a Eastern circuit R/t from FLL with San Juan, St Thomas, Catalina Island, Casa de Campo/la Romana and Nassau. The lowest price starts on the date we selected totals $1068 for the four of us in a catagory 5! Our cabin location looks good with the beauty salon above and sleeping rooms below... and a position slightly forward of center.
http://albertjanbouwknegt.nl/images/PICT0599web2.jpg
Air fare from LA to FLL with no extra time there runs us just under $300 pp... however we prefer to fly United and that's gonna cost us almost $330 for the privilage of accumulating qualifying miles with them.
At any rate - we've never sailed Costa - and I think I'll be fishing through Cruise C R I T I C boards a bit as I evaluate whether this ship, line and port rotation is the bargain I think it is. I figure air is slightly high - but the cruise is pretty cheap for a week - especially for ports which are of sharp interest to us... San Juan, St Thomas and Nassau. The other ports I have not hesrd of before - so there will be an element of discovery in those places.
http://www.kreuzfahrt-sonne.de/AASchiffsdatenbank/Costa/Costa_Fortuna/atrium.jpg http://www.kreuzfahrt-sonne.de/AASchiffsdatenbank/Costa/Costa_Fortuna/pianobar1.jpg
Anyone have any opinion on this or Costa in particular? The "Fortuna" is a behemouth at 105,000 tons and not too old as a 2002 launched ship. PAX loading seems to be 2720 with an Italian/International crew of 1068 which - coincidentially is the price we're paying in dollars. The bottom level cabin we've reserved is only 160 feet - but tomorrow when I talk to thier reservationists maybe we'll consider other digs.
http://www.kreuzfahrt-sonne.de/AASchiffsdatenbank/Costa/Costa_Fortuna/theater.jpg http://www.kreuzfahrt-sonne.de/AASchiffsdatenbank/Costa/Costa_Fortuna/restaurant3.jpg
I figure that sailin' a non-Disney line periodically refreshes our sense of perspective in appreciating DCL. I already know this will not be anything like a Disney cruise - but it is less then half the cost and covers several ports we would not otherwise see.

Your Welcome.:) Brooke better get over her camera shy by next Aug. Oh are there going to be some pictures.:rotfl2:
I am sure she will be more in the mood once we get on the ship.. and she has more kids her age around.. It is a shame that I couldn't convince Eric to come, he would have flirted with her..:hippie:
Need to go for now, feel like I can say I have friends in Chicago.:goodvibes It's a good feeling.
Doesn't it make ya feel like singing the song from Toy Story.. You've got a freind in me..
You've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me
When the road looks rough ahead
And you're miles and miles
From your nice warm bed
You just remember what your old pal said
Boy, you've got a friend in me
Yeah, you've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me
If you've got troubles, I've got 'em too
There isn't anything I wouldn't do for you
We stick together and can see it through
Cause you've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me
Some other folks might be
A little bit smarter than I am
Bigger and stronger too
Maybe
But none of them will ever love you
The way I do, it's me and you
Boy, and as the years go by
Our friendship will never die
You're gonna see it's our destiny
You've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me

We received it in the mail yesterday, 7/21 directly from DCL. It came with the letter I quoted and a revised confirmation.
It seemed steep to us as well considering we didn't have to pay it on the 2005 repo.
Michelle
Wish I could be there.:sad2: Have a Great time.:)
I just paid off cruise last week. ( By Check ) I haven't heard anything about this. Anyone through dreams? Have you been contacted?
Has anyone received correspondence from DCL regarding an additional $100 per person and a revised balance due?
Per letter from DCL:
I have been keeping up with this thread as best I can but don't recall anyone discussing this. That is an additional $500 for our family
Michelle
Thanks Michelle, no one has mentioned this. When did you get this? This would definitely be a downer especially for larger families. That sound like a lot for a port tax/canal tax.
You have the right idea!!!
haven't gotten anything here
This was on some of the other boards too......
I just called DCL when I got home from mini meet. I was told that if cruise was not paid in full, additional taxes would be charged. She did not give me an exact amount because I was told my TA(Dreams) would be contacting me!! I figure I made more than that in interest if I let DCL have my money early. I just said I would be spending $200 less on pictures, gifts, and excursions!!!

Hey, I may actually be able to help you for a change! We went on Costa Mediterranea in April (Easter week). We went because we were looking for something last minute and inexpensive. We got obstructed view (cat 6) staterooms. With insurance and fees it was just over $1500 a cabin for two. We felt the cabin was a decent size and had ample storage space. We were thrilled with the one cabin that was on the end nearest the elevator as it had a triple length balcony! The balcony actually went past the length of the cabin and behind the service area. We were on deck 5, which made an easy walk down to deck 2 for the dining room and up to deck 9 for the buffet/pool.
I felt it was a very casual cruise; they really were not too strict on their dress code. Even formal night seemed to be a suggestion. They did a few cute things in the dining room, but where we were sitting made it difficult to see. We did need to get our table reassigned as they split our two cabins up, but that could have been due to the fact we booked so late. I thought they could have handled that better, but it didn't spoil the week!
One really nice thing I learned about on the CC website was this option for your keycard. You pay a fee (it was about $11.50 a day per person who wanted it) to get unlimited house wine, tap beer, bottled water, and soda at meals only. My sister and I decided to do it, and even though we did not have too many lunches on board (we did not find too many bar tenders willing to serve outside the hours after the first day!) we thought it was worth it. After showing the card the first night, the waiter brought bottled water right away, and always gave us the full bottle of wine, not just the glass. We usually went through two bottles of water and at least a bottle of wine each night just the two of us! I believe this is something you must buy before the cruise, you cannot get it onboard, so if you have wine or beer with your meals and you ar not fussy about the lable, I would suggest this option.
I can't really tell you about the kids program as I have teen boys and they really just like to eat; their idea of a good time is to order room service! We did not go to any shows as we were doing 4 ports and we wanted to be up and ready. We did use our balcony, and we did use the fitness center, which was nice. Oh, we did use the slide once. It was fun, but the water was cold!
I guess we were most impressed with how clean everything was. And they have a toga night, which was a lot of fun! They leave white sheets in the cabins with directions on how to wrap it. Some people bring their own, and bring accessories. I would say about half the people dress in the togas for dinner. We brought ivy and coin trim from the craft department at Walmart and lots of safety pins!
PM me if you want more info; hope this helps!

That's like us -- 27ds, 24dd, 16dd, 9ds & 6dd. ;) He had an awesome plan for us! :)

Kev plays "Hero" with a group of his buddies, not any online games. They've been off for the summer but normally get together every other week or so.

Are there a Lot of smokers on these ships? I have asthma, that's why I ask.
I believe smoking is limited to certain areas of the ship, but there are a lot of Europeans on the ship (every announcement is made in five languages!), and they are usually known for smoking more. The only time I really remember being near anything smokey was when we were looking for lounge chairs in the shade and we ended up near one of the ash tray boxes. We just moved the chairs. I am not sure about the lounges and casino, either. My sister and I actually went to Mass twice in one of the theatres, and I don't remember it being smokey. We were also there for the Captain's gala night and the opening show, and I don't remember smoke then, either. I do remember moving ashtrays from tables near the bar outside the buffet near the pool on deck 9, but I don't remember anyone smoking while I was there, although if there were ashtrays there, that must mean they can smoke at that bar area. But I don't have asthma, so I would probably not be as attuned to it as you would.
Hope that helps!

OMG!
I was flipping through channels and on the Weather Channel they are showing footage from a ship in a storm. They are all sitting in interior areas with life vests on and are sliding back and forth across the floors. Full grown adults sliding around. In one hallway one of the girls went in her cabin to grab something and you could hear her getting thrown against the wall.
It's not anything current, I don't even know when it happened. Finally caught the name of the ship, the Explorer. Seems to have a lot of students on it, not sure if it's a teaching ship or what.
Scary! They've moved on now to some other disaster. I don't think I like watching the Weather Channel now.

I told DH about the possible $100/person panama canal fee, so he started poking around the net. He found this site http://www.pancanal.com/eng/maritime/tolls.html which looks like it is indeed a new toll they are charging - it goes into effect this October.
I agree with Tom that we should all call Disney and protest - I doubt they will just eat the cost, but maybe they will give in on some sort of onboard credit to offset it a little - even $50 per person would make it more palatable and feel like DCL was at least trying to share the cost.
With the ship sailing completely full, they can't be cutting it close on profit on this sailing.

Thank You for the reliable insights Tiggrbaby!
... We were looking for the background info on a sailing my Dad sudddenly expressed interest in - when we stumbled upon this Costa offer. As it turns out we can do it - but were still reviewing the details to ensure all our "ducks are in line".
It sounds as if you had no gripes or disappointments - and that's good. And I must say the $1500 for an obstructed veranda sounds like a fair deal! Our thing is thier cheapest inside deal - which happens to place us in thier top inside catagory. The direct pricing is lower then the TA site where we found the deal. In a few moments I'm going to try for the TA reverse auction site - CRUISE COMPETE. However, it's already cheap enough - as in - how much cheaper can it get?
Aside from that - we know next to nothing about this line. I think when they sail in Europe the ships see a lot of Europeans and - that means a lot of smokers. Something we're not too keen of - but when saving about half with some compromises (no Giant Mouse or Walt themed things) then we have to expect some losses for the savings.
At any rate = we will probably book this tomorrow - unless we find a better deal somewhere.
Thanks again for your insights - if we have any Qs which we feel you might know about - then we'll PM ya' - thanks fer the offer of further insights!

This was on some of the other boards too......
It just stinks!  I have read and re-read the fine print and can't see anything about who bears the risk of increased fees.
My DH did the same thing and could not find anything that indicates one way or the other whether DCL can pass this on to us. I have a feeling that it is hidden somewhere

Well....
... seeing as this is not a US flagged ship they adhere to the maritime laws of their flag. And they obviously choose to flag their ships where the laws are VERY favorable to them. So - off hand I don't see as to how we could resist being charged for the $100pp.
Of course, polite griping can't hurt too much. I mean a bunch of us are still awaiting guarantee assignments - so that means if anyone were too intense in thier complaints they misght still get a cabin assignment under the Rockin' Bar D or next to the engine room, eh?

At any rate - to change gears briefly now - I am gonna be on the road monday and tuesday so may not lurk as much as I might otherwise. Of course, everyones' heard that from me before - right? And I have a new notebook to try at the hotel tomorrow. So I'll maybe hook up in the evening.

Hello All
Just checked my online ressie and indeed an extra $400 has been added on already  This is not going to go over very well. I think that all of us were at or above our max price when we booked this cruise and now hidden charges. DCL had to of known about this back when they were negotiating with the canal for passage. I do think that there is a clause in the cruise contract (will check tomorrow) that allows for changes in port charges but not $100/pp. I am expecting the letter this week and will definitely going to phone to give them my opinion.

I'm only posting this image 'cause certain friends are on Kauai now and less likely to see it ... <chuckles>
http://edweb.sdsu.edu/wip/examples/gas2/OilPricesFirstBorn.jpg
I must agree entirely - however - I don't want to inspire a full on revolt. Not yet at least. I figure we can wait til we're all aboard and have the crew out-numbered.
Seriously, I don't know what we can do. In a sold out state it's a pretty hot commodity - and Iwonder how many will seriously cancel. I am not sure about this - except to say this is not benefiting Disneys' bank UNLESS anyone cancels and they resell the cabin at top dollar. Either way.... most of us are gonna notice the extra cost - no doubt about it.
Oh well... if you sense any sympathy or wiggle room on Disney responding or offerring anything tangible we'd all appreciate the heads up. I think I'm gonna call tomorrow too - and probe the issue for weakness and look for some kind of benefit for all of us. Maybe they'll seriously do something.... anyhthing as a gesture of good faith. EH? Everyone getting $100 in Shutters credit for each CABIN would not hurt them any would it? Or how about some kind of BOOST to a cabin gift of some magnitude? What? I don't know .... but if they do nothing - I can easly envision lower sales in Shutters and the spa. No doubt about it.
On he other hand - I would like to urge some degree of calm. This is still a fair value for an amazing voyage.

I'm sitting here waiting for our family doc's office to open at 9am. I've been up and down all night, that's why I posted around 3am this morning. I think I either pulled or strained a muscle on the right side of my chest as I was moving heavy furniture the other day for Hazel. I've tried everything I could think of to relieve the pain, but nothing has helped. At 3am this morning my chest felt as though it was on fire so I put an ice pack on it and was able to fall back to sleep until 6am.
I called out of work today, with the extra help that I received over the past few weeks, the water meter readings are actually ahead of schedule(for a change). :thumbsup2
If anyone has any extra :wizard: I'd appreciate some of it sent my way.

Pamela (pdarrah)
WARNING, MATH ALERT (BUT MONEY INVOLVED)
Now they charge on a special Panama canal ton which is based on volume. Gross tonnage is also based on volume. I don't know the Magic's weight in PC tons, but in Gross Tons, the tax is about a $35,000 difference, based on Magic's capacity of (what did Crash say 1,750 people) and a likely cruise population of about 1,500, the per person charge is about $25.00.
...................................old............ ........new..................diff
First 10,000...........$ 29,600.00.......$ 33,900.00........$ 4,300.00
Second 10,000.......$ 29,000.00.......$ 33,200.00........$ 4,200.00
Balance 63,000.......$179,550.00......$205,380.00.......$2 5,830.00
Total 83,000..........$238,150.00......$272,480.00...... $34,330.00
So, unless the PC Ton is about 4 times a Gross ton, Disney is goughing us here! (unless its $100 per cabin, not passenger...)

Roger....did you transfer your ressie to a TA? I looked on DCL site, and my balance doesn't even show up. Looked on DU site, and my balance is the same as it was, no increase.
Not that this is fair at all, but is it possible they cannot charge the increase if a TA has the ressie?
Only reason I ask is that someone stated earlier that DCL said if balance is not paid in full, they will charge the increase.
Either way....this HOOTS!

I orginally booked directly on the DCL website and have not yet transferred to a TA. My confirmation number has not changed but there is an additional $400 on my bill from the last time I checked. This works out to a 6% increase for us. There went my Tier 1 pricing.

As soon as the doc saw a rash on my back, he knew exactly what I had. He said the Shingles is what was causing the burning sensation I was feeling. WOW, lucky me!!!

Hi everyone,
Sorry it has been SOOO LOOONG since I posted. Seems like life is flying by. We had our vacation and then Elizabeth's surgery and I just didn't seem to have the time to devote to reading along. I am so sure I have missed a ton of stuff. Saw a post about the website. Great to hear about that. I am sure it is great.
Elizabeth is in the recovery stage of her surgery and is still not able to put any weight on her leg so she pretty much stays on the couch or wanders around on her crutches. I spend my time playing nurse and waitress. They found some missing cartilage and a tear inside the hip joint. We are praying that they have fixed the problem. Not much they can do about the missing cartilage but they fixed the tear and hope that will give her some relief. Right now she is in so much pain from the actual surgery she can't tell if there is a difference yet.
I only read the last couple pages and have no plans to try to catch up on what I missed but I wanted to tell Andy that I hope he feels better soon.
And to my DISsister Laura I want to wish you a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t222/TheNextFairyGodmother/Birthdayballoons.gif Have some cake for me since it my birthday too but I can't have cake since I weigh in tomorrow.

I know that if I am in a funky mood you guys can cheer me up and it has helped me alot during this week of waiting.
Karen
Be well Karen. Prayers & Pixie Dust & all that.
Has anyone received correspondence from DCL regarding an additional $100 per person and a revised balance due?
No letter, and I haven't checked the website... I guess I really do need to sit down & write the complaint letter I've been thinking about (I'm still steamed about how poorly they handled the reservations).
If anyone has any extra :wizard: I'd appreciate some of it sent my way.

I hear Shingles can be quite painful... Here's hoping your case is mild & doesn't last long.
It turned out to be an expensive trip, but the next time we go they will "Welcome us home at SSR!"
Now THAT'S a birthday present. Welcome Home!

Have some cake for me since it my birthday too but I can't have cake since I weigh in tomorrow.
Happy Birthday to you!
Wishing Elizabeth a speedy recovery!:grouphug:

:thumbsup2

Hey Guys,
I just arrived home from seeing the doc and stopping at CVS after having two prescriptions filled. What I thought was pain from a sore muscle, turned out to be a case of Shingles. As soon as the doc saw a rash on my back, he knew exactly what I had. He said the Shingles is what was causing the burning sensation I was feeling. WOW, lucky me!!!
The doc said stress could bring on the Shingles, and I told the doc I have been under a great deal of stress with work, see I knew this job was getting the better of me...........:lmao:
Oh well, I already had Thursday and Friday scheduled off as vacation days, so I will go back to work for Tuesday and Wednesday, a very short two day work week for me..........:goodvibes
Thanks for the :wizard: everyone!!! ;)
Oh, Andy :sad2: I know my mom and FIL can fell for ya. Their's both went undiagnosed for a long time and I know that they both really hurt. We had a quack country doctor tell mom that she didn't have shingles because there was no rash. She "self doctored" for a couple of months. Finally saw a dermatologist who confirmed that yes it was shingles and if she had caught it sooner, it wouldn't have been so far advanced and she wouldn't have been in such pain. Her's hit her back and arms.

She did not give me an exact amount because I was told my TA(Dreams) would be contacting me!! I figure I made more than that in interest if I let DCL have my money early. I just said I would not be spending $200 less on pictures, gifts, and excursions!!![/QUOTE]

Yes, although I had heard a long time ago that she said the last word in the final book was "scar" and then recently heard that although she had not changed the meaning of the ending, had rearranged the words. I don't want to talk about the book for fear of ruining it for others, but I agree with you that it was a satisfying ending.

Andy - hope your shingles clears. I understand it's supposed to be horrendous. I thought it was routine in the US to vaccinate against chicken pox so you didn't get shingles! When the youngest DD caught it on holiday at Easter (2 days before our flight home) that is what the Dr told me. All I could say was that I was pleased we had travel insurance!
DH bought me HP on Saturday, but need to finish the Jeffrey Deaver book I'm reading first, so I'll just have to wait a bit longer - maybe the 4hour ferry trip on Saturday to Ireland?

Well isn't this a nice "How do you do!" Like this cruise isn't expensive enough? Are they not making enough of a profit? I was hoping to hear news more along the lines of, "DCL is so honored to have you as a repeat guest that they're offering you an onboard credit!" Well it was a nice dream while it lasted!

It was great fum.. thanks for organizing this Cheryl..
:thumbsup2 Forgot to thank you Cheryl. We had alot of fun.:yay:
Doesn't it make ya feel like singing the song from Toy Story.. You've got a freind in me..
You've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me
When the road looks rough ahead
And you're miles and miles
From your nice warm bed
You just remember what your old pal said
Boy, you've got a friend in me
Yeah, you've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me
If you've got troubles, I've got 'em too
There isn't anything I wouldn't do for you
We stick together and can see it through
Cause you've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me
Some other folks might be
A little bit smarter than I am
Bigger and stronger too
Maybe
But none of them will ever love you
The way I do, it's me and you
Boy, and as the years go by
Our friendship will never die
You're gonna see it's our destiny
You've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me
You have the right idea!!!
Aw Susan.............Thanks, love that song. :)
I just called DCL when I got home from mini meet. I was told that if cruise was not paid in full, additional taxes would be charged. She did not give me an exact amount because I was told my TA(Dreams) would be contacting me!! I figure I made more than that in interest if I let DCL have my money early. I just said I would not be spending $200 less on pictures, gifts, and excursions!!!
Hmm well my check hasn't been cashed yet. Maybe I will just pretend it was pay off in full and I will luck out.:rolleyes1
Cool! :thumbsup2
I asked dh to try to see if he could get me one at wholesale cost -- he's in the craft business and they do some work with ProvoCraft..... I want the big machine (that cuts paper up to 12 x 24 size) and all 4 of the Disney cartridges.....

26 days to our cruise, everyone is very excited even Ian Thomas (.7 yrs)
Sorry to hear about the Canal Tax, that's another $900 for me.
I've had no luck getting on the new web site. Have followed directions that were sent, anyone can help!!!
#800 never thought I'd get there.
Ouch that could make a dent in wallet.
:wizard: :wizard: Sorry Andy, does it itch? I will never forget when Brooke gave me chicken pox on my 35th birthday. It was so bad I had to go to hospital. Feel better soon.

Okay, so I've somehow managed to delete the quote in my post above so it probably doesn't make much sense now!
The CPox vaccine hasn't been around that long so a lot of us adults never had it. I remember having a terrible case of pox when I was a little girl in the 60's, I thought I had bugs crawling on me all the time.

I had Chicken Pox when I was a wee little lad, from what I understand the CP virus stays inactive in your body, but things such as stress can make the virus active again. I think the stress that I have been under at work most likely triggered the Shingles. I truly don't remember there being a vaccination for Chicken Pox (I could be wrong), but I think we might have gotten a vaccination for Small Pox when I was younger. Maybe someone in the medical profession could help us out with this??? :confused3 I know we got vaccinated for a whole bunch of stuff.

The chicken pox (varicella) vaccine was only created and tested fairly recently. I think it started being available around 1995. So no adults would have had it. The jury is still out as to whether being inoculated against chicken pox will prevent shingles down the road, but those of us with kids who were inoculated can hope so, for their sake!
Hope you feel better soon, Andy.

Subject: Important: Increase in Government Taxes and Fees for your PanamaCanal Crossing Disney Cruise Line Vacation
Dear Valued Dreams Unlimited Travel Client
We have just been informed by Disney Cruise Line that the Panama Canal has recently adjusted the per person amount charged for Government Taxes and Fees to transit the canal. As a result, Disney Cruise Line needs to collect an additional $100 per person booked on these cruises.
Dreams Unlimited Travel will be updating all of our client’s reservations in our system over the next week or so with the new reservation totals. Once we have completed updating your reservation we will send you an email with instructions on how to access your Client Services area of our site to review your new pricing. We appreciate your patience as this process may take an extended period of time while we make sure all our client’s reservations are updated accurately.
We apologize for this inconvenience and hope you understand that this increase is for the Government Taxes and Fees being assessed by the Panama Canal. This increase is not coming from Dreams Unlimited Travel.
Sincerely,
The Cruise Concierge Team

WARNING, MATH ALERT (BUT MONEY INVOLVED)
Now they charge on a special Panama canal ton which is based on volume. Gross tonnage is also based on volume. I don't know the Magic's weight in PC tons, but in Gross Tons, the tax is about a $35,000 difference, based on Magic's capacity of (what did Crash say 1,750 people) and a likely cruise population of about 1,500, the per person charge is about $25.00.
...................................old............ ........new..................diff
First 10,000...........$ 29,600.00.......$ 33,900.00........$ 4,300.00
Second 10,000.......$ 29,000.00.......$ 33,200.00........$ 4,200.00
Balance 63,000.......$179,550.00......$205,380.00.......$2 5,830.00
Total 83,000..........$238,150.00......$272,480.00...... $34,330.00
So, unless the PC Ton is about 4 times a Gross ton, Disney is goughing us here! (unless its $100 per cabin, not passenger...)
I can't imagine that Disney would charge even $1.00 more than justifiable.
They know this ship is full of their most loyal customers and I don't think they would risk alienating a major customer base.
I would wager that DCL is not passing on the full cost of the increase.
They're not stupid.

Take it easy, Andy......hope you feel better soon.
Roger......that is a significant % increase. This is really stinky. I have a $400 OBC right now, so there goes the benefit of that! Of course, I'm still living if fantasyland that they may just "forget" to charge me the increase....I think I continue living there until I actually get that letter.
Went to the mail box and there it was. I don't like it but I don't think DCL would risk making one of it's major customer bases mad without justification.
And with the number of Castaway Club members on this cruise, I don't think they would risk an all out revolt by charging more than the actual cost.
There is only so much money for this trip so I guess we will have to rework our budget.

Now THIS is turning my eyes RED with annoyance. If this is the case then the price change to $100 per person would be gouging us! And in my groups' case the $3000 increase would be about 75% unjustified.
I know some have said they can't imagine Disney making too much off us loyalists... but in spite of the "feel good" product they market - it is a business after all. They have two huge new ships to finance and shareholders to answer to. They are in the business to make $$$$ ... and we are thier crop to harvest and manage.
http://www.arnes.si/pics/help/trojan-horse.gif
Right about now I am suspicious of being a bit mishandled as a PATRON. Especially since I'm in the midst of booking a little cruise on Costa. I'm fixing to pay $1449 for a window cabin for 7 nites with a great eastern port rotation. Comparing the Magic on the same dates (a western port rotation) the price with Costco for a window was $4150 with a $350 Costco cash card.... net cost about $3750. Hmmm ..... On the one hand it's $3750 for a less desirable (to us) western voyage versus $1449 for a more desirable eastern voyage. Granted, the cabin on the Magic is a little larger at 180+ feet versus Costa with 160'.... but I could sail Costa just over 2.5x for the price of DCL. I smell something fishy though with this new DCL fee accessment.
http://www.danamania.com/temp/cow-fire.jpg
Don't get me wrong - I love DCL - and I've always felt their rates were tolerable to us. However, piecemeal gouging like this is annoying. I had assumed the $100 per person was just the Panama tax - not a new repricing. When we booked and placed a deposit that fateful morning I thought we were LOCKING in the price FROM Disney. Tax changes are acceptable - not additional skimming!!!! I'm going to weigh my words and have a chat with DCL tomorrow or some time very soon. Not that I'm anyone special - but in combination with everyone else griping maybe something will come of it. This cash cowis not going to be impolitely MILKED by DCL quietly....

So where are the Harry Potter fans on the thread? Still pouring through the 759 pages?
Finished it yesterday after work! We bought 2 copies so DW and I wouldn't fight over it. We ordered them before she switched jobs. Now she works 12 hour shifts on the weekends and hasn't had time to touch it yet. We could have gotten by with just one copy. But more impoortantly, I can't wait til she finishes so I can talk about it without spoiling anything.
Jared and I are flying Southwest tomorrow to Omaha. I don't like the "no seat assignment" thing, but have to admit, they do make the flight entertaining.
When we flew to Vegas last month, one flight attendant had us in stitches the whole time.
We were afraid of the no assigned seating on SWA, but since we tried them, we won't go back to US Scare again.
I'm with DU also and there's nothing added to ours ...yet.
We got our email from DU tonight. It stinks, but I'm glad I heard about it here first and didn't totally freak out when I got the email.
I agree that maybe we'll try to spend a little less on the cruise. If needed, we can cut off a pre-cruise day at DL, but I really don't want to. After all, it's the TOAL.
I did some research about Shingles after I returned home from the doc this morning. I did read where it stated that a rash does not always show up. I don't know how they could have gone on for so long, this pain is ungodly at times. I took my meds about 10:30am and the Lyrica knocked me out for a couple of hours, but when I woke up, my chest felt as though it was on fire again, this is no fun, whatsoever..............:sad2:
Andy, so sorry to hear about your case of Shingles. Hope the meds kick in and have you feeling better soon.
I also remember getting the measles when I was a Senior in high school........... Boy, did I get teased about that.........
The Chicken Pox vaccine was liscensed in 1995. Newer is the Shingles vaccine. The CDC recommended in Oct of last year that people over 60 should receive the vaccine. One of my part-time jobs is at the Vaccine Education Center at Children's Hospital. Here's a link to some info about the vaccine:

WARNING, MATH ALERT (BUT MONEY INVOLVED)
Now they charge on a special Panama canal ton which is based on volume. Gross tonnage is also based on volume. I don't know the Magic's weight in PC tons, but in Gross Tons, the tax is about a $35,000 difference, based on Magic's capacity of (what did Crash say 1,750 people) and a likely cruise population of about 1,500, the per person charge is about $25.00.
...................................old............ ........new..................diff
First 10,000...........$ 29,600.00.......$ 33,900.00........$ 4,300.00
Second 10,000.......$ 29,000.00.......$ 33,200.00........$ 4,200.00
Balance 63,000.......$179,550.00......$205,380.00.......$2 5,830.00
Total 83,000..........$238,150.00......$272,480.00...... $34,330.00
So, unless the PC Ton is about 4 times a Gross ton, Disney is goughing us here! (unless its $100 per cabin, not passenger...)
www.pancanal.com/eng/maritime/tolls.html
"In the case of passenger vessels, the ACP will assess tolls based on the maximum passenger capacity in accordance with the International Tonnage Certificate 69, or the vessel’s passenger ship safety certificate; vessels over 30,000 gross tons and whose PC/UMS ÷ maximum passenger capacity ratio is equal to or less than 33 will be charged on a per berth basis according to the following table. In addition, Panama Canal tolls per market segment are increased, in general terms, as shown in the following table."
I'm sorry I can't get the table to copy. However, under "market Segment"
Passenger Vessels toll per berth
Present toll N/A
October 2007 $100
October 2008 $115
I'm no expert, but it looks like at the present time there is no toll for passenger vessels
Beginning October 2007, the fee will be $100 per berth
Beginning October 2008, the fee will be $115 per berth
It looks to me like DCL is charging us exactly what the ACP, Canal Authority, is charging them.

Omaha!!?! WTH is in Omaha??? :rotfl: J/K ;)
I only flew SW once and we had a crew that was a total crack-up. During the safety demo (you know, the one you usually totally ignore) , the flight attendant stated, "Should your flight suddenly turn into a cruise", and began to explain the seat cushion/flotation device segment and the plane was in stitches. They were like a comedy show.

Hey Guys,
I just arrived home from seeing the doc and stopping at CVS after having two prescriptions filled.
Thanks for the :wizard: everyone!!! ;)
I hope you feel better quickly. All I know about shingles is, I have heard it is very painful. I hope they have given you something to help you deal with the discomfort. Hope you feel better, Andy :flower3: . Here, you sound like you need some cyber chicken soup too......

Thanks Mike, I read the article. A question though, since I just turned 52 in April, and the article said it the vaccine was for those 60 and over, would I be able to get the vaccine at 60, even though I have had Shingles already, or would it be too late for me to get the vaccine?

Yes, although I had heard a long time ago that she said the last word in the final book was "scar" and then recently heard that although she had not changed the meaning of the ending, had rearranged the words. I don't want to talk about the book for fear of ruining it for others, but I agree with you that it was a satisfying ending.
The epilog (sp?) was weak, but the overall ending was unexpected and good

I asked my TA to inquire:
1) Where in the terms and conditions does it say that Disney is not bound by the price they offered the cruise for?
2) How they arrived at the $100 figure, everything I see from the Panama Canal website puts the figure at $35 per person or less?
3) How many more of these "tax increases" we can expect?
4) Is it true that anyone paid in full is not subject to this increase?

You need to read the footnote, there is a second calculation if the tonnage divided by passengers is a certain ratio.
Also, prior to this there was a fee to cross the canal. DCL didn't go for free, so even if its $100, they aren't deducting out the prior toll.

Thanks Mike, I read the article. A question though, since I just turned 52 in April, and the article said it the vaccine was for those 60 and over, would I be able to get the vaccine at 60, even though I have had Shingles already, or would it be too late for me to get the vaccine?
Mary Ann, thanks for the cyber chicken soup, but chickens aren't my favorite thing right now............;)
Andy, I'll double check with my boss at work today. It's recommended for everyone over 60, but you should be able to get it earlier than that. That's probably a good idea. With chicken pox, it's usually a one time infection, but from what I understand, you can have more than one outbreak of shingles. I'll let you know what I find out.
