Just in time for the pirate run! Sorry that DS's team lost.
Mostly it is frustrating because all the teams are suppose to have at least 11 players but we only have 9 and only 8 showed tonight so when the catcher was injured by the other team hitting him with a bat on his arm, it caused us to have to put him in the outfield and guess where all their hits went? DS is very frustated because we lost our older players and really don't have a pitcher that is up to the other teams pitchers abilities.

For the last few years, I wondered what will happen when this generation of 'trophy kids' grows up and gets jobs. I've seen it as a college professor. Some (not all) students are so used to getting a trophy for showing up or every kid in the school being named "student of the month/week/day/hour/minute" that it is incomprehensible to them that they can show up for class, complete the assigments and not get an A. I have had parents call me to debate their 18-22 year old student's grade! Despite posting grades for assignments and test, a few students are always baffled that they are failing the class & I didn't set up a personal consultation with them to spell out that their grades are lousy! I guess I should add that if they come to me I will bend over backwards to help them succeed.
Frankly, I'm too lazy to look it up, but I heard a segment on NPR within the last few weeks about HR departments having to adapt to the grown-up trophy kids. They need constant encouragement and need to be told how special they are all the time. The are resorting to things like "Yay, we almost met a sales goal" or gatherings in the break room!
My DS8 commented that he had almost as many hockey medals as I have skating medals. I didn't bother explaining to him that when I was a kid you only got a medal for first, second, or third & that a trophy wasn't recognition for still being on a team at the end of the season.
I am all for inclusiveness in sports & other activities. I think every kid should have every opportunity. Every kid is special, and there should be various levels so that every kid has a chance to succeed, but they also have something to work for. My kids know they are special, but they also know that not everyone thinks they are as special as I do! And if they want to earn a Cub Scout badge or make the higher level hockey team, they have to work their little tooshies off!
THUMP!
(that was me jumping down from my soap box)
Have a great trip!!!
It sounds like we have the same soapbox!!!! My children and I had this conversation this morning!
My 9ds told me that he was tired of everyone being a *winner*. He informed me that some people have to be the ones that lost because in real life it is impossible for everyone to come in first! Ya think?
I'm a flat out honest kind of a mom. I tell my kids that the people in this house (and their grandparents) are the only ones that think they are the most special people around. They won't always be the best at something and that sometimes they will be the worst. It is ok. Life does not come to an end! ;)
So far 3 of our 5 children (we don't know yet about the 5yr old!) are *Theater* kids.... So, they know about disapointment! LOL! When over 100 kids audition and there are only 10 - 15 parts at the most... Someone loses out! And it's OK!
And don't get Dh talking about employees... :scared1:

Hugs Laura for your friends........there sounds like there may still be hope....
Since we are discussing serious stuff for the moment.....NASA launches this Friday at 7:35 or so (unless it is scrubbed or postponed) but anyway one of the mission specialists on board is someone that went to high school with me in El Paso.....His name is Danny Olivas. So please keep those gentlemen in your prayers. I am especially nervous with this launch. I always get kind of queesy but I am really nervous for Danny. We are going to try and drive over. Every single time I have driven all the way there....they have scrubbed the launch.
On our cruise last December they had a night launch. The Captain delayed our travels so we could see it take off. It was spectacular at night. My photos do not give it justice at all.

Pamela-Can't wait to hear about your adventures. I sometimes feel invisible too. I think it is just that so much is going on and although people are interested they just do not respond. I know personally after reading numerous pages I forget what all I wanted to respond to........a good example is I have been meaning to tell Brack that I am so sorry that JoJo is not feeling well. I hope the aches and pains get better. ........I just honestly forgot. Sorry Brack!!!!!!
I think we all feel that way sometimes. Sometimes I feel like an outsider too. Sometimes I feel like I am going to seize when they start running formulas and numbers......Sometimes I even feel like I have got to be the only one not going to Europe. Sometimes I feel like I am the only one without a tattoo around here. Sometimes I feel like I am the only one sober at chat. :rotfl2: :rotfl2: Anyway my point is that I think we all feel like that from time to time.
With such an active thread it is impossible to respond to everything. If I did I would never sleep and have a post count somewhere near 50,000. The great thing is that we really do care!
JoJo is much better thanks!

Hey gang greatings from Memphis.
In all the years that I have been going to training courses and conferednces, this is the first one that is actually harder then a full day at work. Very long days with evening prep for the next day. At least I don't have to deal with people walking in and out of the office, phones and e-mail. Anyway....
Memphis is ok. I've done the Beale St thing, when to Graceland on Sunday and caught a Redbirds (Cardinals AAA team) game last night.
OK, I'm gonna play ketchup here.

I don't know if this was really written by Paul Harvey or not but it came in my email and I thought it was appropriate today considering our trophy kids discussion.
Paul Harvey Writes:
We tried so hard to make things better for our kids that we made them worse.
For my grandchildren, I'd like better.
I'd really like for them to know about hand me down clothes and homemade ice
cream and leftover meat loaf sandwiches. I really would.
I hope you learn humility by being humiliated, and that you learn honesty by
being cheated.
I hope you learn to make your own bed and mow the lawn and wash the car.
And I really hope nobody gives you a brand new car when you are sixteen.
It will be good if at least one time you can see puppies born and your old
dog put to sleep.
I hope you get a black eye fighting for something you believe in.
I hope you have to share a bedroom with your younger brother/sister. And
it's all right if you have to draw a line down the middle of the room, but when
he wants to crawl under the covers with you because he's scared, I hope you let him.
When you want to see a movie and your little brother/sister wants to tag
along, I hope you'll let him/her.
I hope you have to walk uphill to school with your friends and that you live
in a town where you can do it safely.
On rainy days when you have to catch a ride, I hope you don't ask your
driver to drop you two blocks away so you won't be seen riding with someone as uncool as your Mom.
If you want a slingshot, I hope your Dad teaches you how to make one instead of buying one.
I hope you learn to dig in the dirt and read books.
When you learn to use computers, I hope you also learn to add and subtract
in your head.
I hope you get teased by your friends when you have your first crush on a
boy\girl, and when you talk back to your mother that you learn what ivory soap tastes like.
May you skin your knee climbing a mountain, burn your hand on a stove and
stick your tongue on a frozen flagpole.
I don't care if you try a beer once, but I hope you don't like it. And if a
friend offers you dope or a joint, I hope you realize he is not your friend.
I sure hope you make time to sit on a porch with your Grandma/Grandpa and go fishing with your Uncle.
May you feel sorrow at a funeral and joy during the holidays.
I hope your mother punishes you when you throw a baseball through your
neighbor's window and that she hugs you and kisses you at Hanukkah/Christmas time when you give her a plaster mold of your hand.
These things I wish for you - tough times and disappointment, hard work and
happiness. To me, it's the only way to appreciate life.
Written with a pen. Sealed with a kiss. I'm here for you. And if I die
before you do, I'll go to heaven and wait for you.

Hi Mates -
I'm back from our trip - actually - its taken all day to ketchup - but if this was last March - it wouldn't have been 50 pages but 500 pages. Wow -see how much we've slowed. Although - these past 5 days seemed to be more lively?! ( I brought my laptop - but had no time - poor planning on my part huh!)
First - I tired to make notes as I skimmed - but I can't read my "shorthand".
I'm so tired - I'll try to make sense of it later.
Second - "Spamalot" was just a hoot!! I do want to see the NYC version though.
Most Importantly -Third - Mini- Meet w/Todd - our Captain! What can I say - those who already know Todd and family understand - for everyone else ----- Todd & Melissa are 2 of the most wonderful people I've ever met. Their son Destin is an amazing little boy. It is very obvious that he has incredible parents.
I'll share w/all of you - my DGS Matt has developmental delays - well Destin & Matt are the same age ( but Matt is 2 yrs. behind) - So - Destin, patiently played w/Matt - teaching him how to play a hand-held game. Destin is the reflection of wonderful parents.
Our Captain is a Great looking CJS - but more importantly he is simply a really great guy.
Now - I've got to turn in - driving to and from Las Vegas is quite a trek.
And life goes one - today was back to the grind!
Chris so glad that you had a great trip:)

I just had to quote this (probably again) because it made a stirring statement in my eyes. Some of these things I've experienced... while others I've had the reverse happen. AND just about all of it I'd say my spouse and I are determined to engineer or nurture in our kids. ALL good stuff! ;)

I agree. They don't make comedy like that anymore.
Another sign you are getting old, though. I called my son and his two friends the "three stooges" the other day and my son asked me "what's a stooge".
I remember going to the local Loeews theatre and they were appearing in person. They did some slapstick and then left before their movie went on. O used to love them!!!
Ummm......Tom if you remember Alicia chatted with some of us way back in the beginning when your computer crashed and you were looking for a new one.......
I totally agree. My son who is 10 has suddenly decided he would really like to try softball. Well all the places that I have found, are the type of places where all the kids in the league have been playing since they were 4 and he would never get a great experience. Whatever happened to sports for fun not a career. I call it the Tiger Woods syndrome. Everyone is convinced that their child will be the next Tiger in their particular sport. We too did competitive swimming. All the parents would talk at about their 7 yo getting scholarships to college. I just thought it was so ridiculous. We just wanted exercise and fun.
I miss you, I miss you, I miss you!!!!
The oldest DGS wanted to do football. The same with that. He was 10 and all the kids were playing since they were toddlers. They all started in Rec soccer, but this year all went (including the 8 yr old by his own request) to do competitive.
Me? Is there another Arlene here?

Andy, I found this in the Orlando Sentinel... The town of Kissimmee is looking for a part time meter reader 14.74 - 16.36. Has a really long description of job respons. including able to walk all day under climatic conditions. The job closes onthe 12th. Interested????:rotfl2:
DD and family landed safely and got back a bit ago from the nightime tour of the monuments. She has soo much planned for tomorrow and Thurs. The older one was not having a great time on his trip on the plane. The other 2 were giggling everytime they hit any turbulence and thru the descent. Poor kid was green. Now the younger ones would love TOT. She did the Coaster at Epcot and loved it. Morgan declined. He's like me and hates those rushes.

Wow. I want to be Andrew when I grow up.
Congratulations, mate.
.... yeah... me too! I love those pix in Majorica... and of course... get to 8000 posts with some dignity left!
Seriously though, is this about the oddest offer you've ever heard. "Buy a bunch of pants and get to fly free somewhere?"
Yeah...
I have to agree. It sure seems odd ball - like it's totally related ... pants to plane tix... right? Well... tonight my spouse had me try on a dozen pants so she could select $129 wort of pants plus a couple belts. So now we find the receipt has an extra 15% off coupon - which we can apply to the purchase of the next $125+ worth of Mens Clothes. SO ... shes' already got it figured out... she has 5 pairs of Dockers at $29.99 which will net out at $128.45 ... which qualifies for the 2nd ticket. And that's as far as she wants to go with this deal. So ... now I'll have about 9 or 10 pairs of Dockers... none of which I really need ... plus 2 decent belts which will see immediate use. AND with this stuff we have 2 free round trip flights available from LA to either Boston or Orlando! FLights like that are worth no less then $600 for the pair to us. SO... the $260 + tax is a good deal even with any backflips we have to contend with as we have $600 in flights plus $260 in clothing for the $260+ tax spent.
Let me get this straight. You were completely caught up so you went back to look for more posts to read?? And you say you don't have too much time on your hands?
I was looking over some business reports trying to resolve some annomalies - and I was already caught up with recent postings. The only time I get that is totally free is after the kids turn in. Otherwise... it is a juggling thing. Just a moment ago I took the little one for a potty run while the spouse was handling the older one. SO yeah... I was all done and about to turn in - so I took a moment to glance at the early posts as I was looking for something.... which I have not found yet.
well now today there's another offer, buy a bunch of pants and get 2 free rooms somewhere....that throws a new wrinkle (so to speak) in it....but the first $125 worth at JCPenney and get the plane ticket, then buy another $125 worth at Kohls and get a place to stay after using said ticket http://www.dockershotelbreak.com/
I immediately infomred my spouse of this deal... and she's all excited in a funny way (no, she's not very serious so we won't be buying into it - but she is curious in an entertaining way).
My wife says I am her 'trophy husband'. She's just trying to figure out what kind of dumb-add contest she won.
Yup...
... I remind my spouse how her greatest bargain was cornering and marrying me... and she reminds me I was her worst deal as she's still not sure of the final cost on me.
Sure has been busy the last couple of weeks around here. Sunday we went to DL, Monday helped take 37 1st graders to the Santa Barbara Zoo, today had to get DD6 ready for dance pictures. Seems like everyday until school is out there is something going on.

Chatty group today weren't we? I spent the morning running stupid errands, then 2 hours getting my hair slightly shorter and not grey and two distinct eyebrows (alas no mani-pedi). THEN we had hockey (:woohoo: ice is back after 6 weeks!), baseball, baseball, and a birthday party.
It is nice to have people agree with me! I'm a pretty opinionated person, but for the sake of the DIS, I don't jump up on my soapbox very often. Thanks to those who voiced their agreement and to those who thought I was a complete idiot in silence!

That's interesting. Your school must be a 'throwback'. I've seen news about schools doing away with the honor roll, etc. My kid's school has a quarterly awards assembly & every kid gets at least one award every year.
That really stinks that the school isn't treating your daughter approporiately. Isolating a kid isn't going to help.

The Worst Marketing Professor Ever spoke with a foreign accent and always talked about a company's "Mission & Wission." Well being adult MBA students, we could have overlooked the pronunciation if this was someone whom we otherwise respected, but since she was the Worst Marketing Professor Ever we of course spent the rest of the semester discussing "Wission". I've been known to slip in meetings in the years since!
I will also never forget the group final presentation when one of my teammates refered to our "strategery". This was a few months after W. used the word and it just stuck with my group.
Being the total cynic, I always think there will be more fine print or difficulty in these offers....
You know those lawyer types.

SO... the kids ate thier chicken drumsticks & rice at lunch... and fruit (plums), however they hardly touched the spaghetti-Os I packed in thier thermos. I'm surprised at that! SO I just brought home some chicken noodle soup - a regular favorite for them... which will go to school tomorrow for thier lunches. Plus I'll b e grilling some chicken drumsticks again for them tomorrow.
What have you packed for your kids' lunches recently? :confused3 I see what the other kids get and some teachers drop hints at the healthy and unhealthy choices of some kids when I ask. IE... I no longer pack lunchables, go-gurt or any juice boxes. The chocolate soy milk gets kind of pricey considering the younger one never finishes half a box - and the older one saves her unused portion only half the time in the school fridge.
Oh well... TTFN... I think I'm all caught up and I'll work on the yosemite trip we're planning. I have not been there in decades - and we have about 3 or 4 weeks til we want to go. If anyone has any advice on this I would welcome it. Especially... where to stay at a reasonable rate (for what ya get).

Here are some entries which I found interesting for one reason or another....
The next three below comment on what came about in their prior long duration cruise meet threads. I find it interesting in what others say might come to pass in the next 400+ days with this thread...
We booked 08/06 in 09/04 and I followed the thread the entire 23 months. It was interesting to see how people's lives changed over that time. Some had to cancel, some you didn't expect joined, but all in all a lot happened over the 2 years.
We booked that cruise at the same time as well. It's hard to plan two cruises so I didn't really focus on the 8/06 cruise until after the Repo. I remember lots of people joining, cancelling and some REjoining the PC Repo Cruise. It was an interesting dynamic with several sub-groups planning activities. We had a great time except 7 days seemed so short. I can't believe we have 2 - 2 week cruises planned!
JWeiss is planning on this cruise as well :)
That is very true. I think that is what bonds you as a group here on the boards. We booked the 12/9/06 on 7/1/05. We weren't as active on the thread until we returned from our 12/10/05 cruise...but once we devoted ourselves to that thread it really took off. We are closing in on 70000 posts even after the cruise. We have gone thru many things together...deaths, a pregnancy, births, kids/venting, seperations due to work, health problems...and we could always come to the meets thread for support and to escape the stress of everyday life. On the other hand...it makes it hard for the next cruise. Many of us booked together on the 12/8/07 cruise. Now some of us will be going on that one but many are switching to the May repo.
Here I'm gonna quote MYSELF with my first calculation/estimate of what come to pass as a final tally at embarkation. Now we're on pace for much larger numbers... astounding!
http://gnuhaus.com/iblog/math-rotation.gif
MATHamatician ALERT!
So... this thread has been going for about 6 days and almost 10 hours.
So that is 6.4167 days and we have 610 posts...
that averages out to 95.0 posts a day...
and with an estimated 573 days to go ....
we would have 54,475 posts by embarkation day!!!
....
Here below Lisa & Stacy explain the origin and background of some major sub-groups present on the thread. Odd though how reference to these groups has faded over the months...
OK...I am a member of the DIS Geeks so I will try to explain our group. We cruised together with over 200 other DISers on the 12/9/06 DD. Our group name was the DDD (December Double Dip) DIS Geeks United. As we all got to know each other over the course of 70000 posts before the cruise we discovered that we had many Geeks in our midsts...band geeks, engineer geeks, techie geeks, trekie geeks, etc. Our one common denominator was our obsession with the DIS. So we were all DIS Geeks at heart. :) Some of us are cruising together again 12/8/07...though many are switching to the May Repo cruise :(...and that has been labeled DIS Geekorama Part 2. We were a pretty tight group...linked dining, booked excursions as a private group, and had several meets at Palo & around the ship.
The Blabbermouths are another group who have also cruised together. I do not know how many times, Stacey will have to let us know the history there.
Basically...both groups like to post & talk alot. The Geeks met in chat on Friday night when there were extra rooms and would stay there 9-1am some nights. Imagine how many posts that kept off the boards. :lmao: That means that I expect this thread to be very fast moving since we are now uniting as one group for this cruise. :thumbsup2
And Crash.....the Blabbermouths were the first Double Scoop Group......we went in May of '06. We were planning a reunion cruise for 2008...but DCL tossed a monkey wrench in those plans with the Repo.
Yeah... I had to pause to agree with Jeans' comments here ... that this group is shaping up into a wild and crazy group! SO many DIS enthuisiasts in one place makes for a lively crowd if ya ask me. AND many have yet to get busy here!!!! It's like a party monster has been created!
http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/1723/chrisfarelypc8.gif
Hi all,
Holy Moly! I can't believe this thread is already 45 pages long!!!!!! I didn't realize this cruise was going to be so popular. Hubby (John) and I are hoping to secure a cabin to on this sailing.......now I'm afraid they'll all be sold out immediately. I was planning to contact DCL directly as we will be transferring a phantom "onboard" reservation. Does anyone know if TAs are able to just buy up big blocks of cabins and reduce the supply for those of us who need to book directly?
Sounds like a wild and crazy group! This will be our 7th Disney cruise. Most recently we sailed with the Cruisetoberfest gang and I think several of them are also contemplating this cruise. Wow, it will a ship full of veterans.....can't wait to see what the Castaway club party will be like!
And below is an early prediction from Todd as to what we might achieve by embarkation... 100,000. So if we all take a deep breath and SLoooooooooW down.... we just might coast into the 100,000 mark for posting tally! OR... alternatively.... if we can goad Lisa into picking up the pace we might get her to achieve 100,000 single handedly! <chuckles>
I bet we break DIS history and break the 100k mark .....thats my prediction ..and I know it can be done ...

That's beautiful!

Not sure if you have read or are a fan of the Left Behind series. I loved reading the books but I really enjoyed the dramatic presentations on tape too. You listen to it as if listening to a movie rather than listen to the book being read.
I have READ this series and absolutely loved them. Did you find listening better than reading. I don't usually read something twice but if you felt it was better then I might consider it. I am listening to Eldest again but that is because I had three months where I was doing my walking indoors to a video series and didn't listen and I was in the middle of the book.

I DD decided to buy and I told my DS he could buy or if he packed his own lunch I would never make him eat green peas for dinner again. Seemed like a good deal and has worked out well. We've pretty much gone to allowing the kids to buy hot lunches every day. I know they are not overly good for them, but it beats Lunchables and even some of the so-called healthy quick meals, which cost much more than the hot lunch. Obviously, we wish we had time to make them a super nutritious meal, but who know is they would eat it?

The Worst Marketing Professor Ever spoke with a foreign accent and always talked about a company's "Mission & Wission." Well being adult MBA students, we could have overlooked the pronunciation if this was someone whom we otherwise respected, but since she was the Worst Marketing Professor Ever we of course spent the rest of the semester discussing "Wission". I've been known to slip in meetings in the years since!
I will also never forget the group final presentation when one of my teammates refered to our "strategery". This was a few months after W. used the word and it just stuck with my group.
For us, it was the physics professor who kept going on and on about 'the 'ooh and the wee wector'. (Our resident rocket scientist will understand.)

If you can start the day without caffeine,
If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,
If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,
If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it,

If you can overlook it when those you love take it out on you when through no fault of yours, something goes wrong,

My kids started packing their lunches this year - 1st & 2nd grade. I make the sandwich, they pack the rest (subject to inspection). Usually a whole pb&j or salami & cheese sandwich or roll up on a spinach tortilla. They love green roll-ups! Pretzels or Sun Chips, some kind of fruit (applesauce, fruit cup, banana, apple, kiwi) & 2 mini cupcakes or a pudding cup.
Every few weeks, I bake about 2 boxes worth of muffin mix or cake mix in mini muffin pans, put 2 muffins each in snack-size zip locks, throw all of them into a big zip lock and put the whole thing in the freezer. Still dessert, but my better for 'em than Little Debbie, etc.

I said this months before they even announced the new ships....Lisa you can back me up on this one ....
As I said before the New ships will home in PC , they will not take a new ship to CA till 2015 when the Panama Canal has the third lane for the wider ships ...When the first ship ports at PC more then likely the Wonder will leave for the WC ;eaving the Magic and "Dreams" ported at PC ..Of course the Magic will then take over the 3 and 4 day while the "Dreams" takes over the 7 day sailings ....Once "Wishes" is done it will make way to PC with the Magic being the Floater ship to possibly be heading to the Med for awhile .....Now the Magic and Wonder could actually swap cause the Magic goes into dry dock before the Wonder would go back , so at dry dock the Magic could be fitted with a covered pool and heated areas on deck 9 and 10 so it could make voyages to Alaska ....but either way one of the older ships is going to the west coast .....

Well with a deal like that, then I guess it's not so bad having a bunch of extra pants laying around. Maybe in the fall you could stuff them with hay & make scarecrows for Halloween? ;)
OK...
I'll be sure to load an image which might pass as a real "Wench Pleaser" the next time we sprint for a pirate posting. And just for the record... you know it's not easy finding a diplomatically correct yet disturbingly provocative image to post? Well... there are lots of "grey" images - but I try to stay reasonably diplomatic with my choosen images.
http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/1723/chrisfarelypc8.gif
Okay you know that is by far NOT a wench pleaser....right?
SO... the kids ate thier chicken drumsticks & rice at lunch... and fruit (plums), however they hardly touched the spaghetti-Os I packed in thier thermos.
My kids complain that anything I heat & put in their thermos such as soup, pasta, etc. smells later in the day so I stopped. My DS eats most school lunch so I usually let him buy. After all the chicken faitas, spagetti, chicken nuggets, etc. are better than some things he eats at home so I won't complain. I do on very rare occassions let him pick out a lunchable. My DD is picky as heck & won't eat any school lunch. She says it's gross & even if she just got a bagel, it takes too long to get through the line. So I pack her a cinnamon raisin bagel with butter day after day after day.
I guess this would give new meaning to the phrase," Flying by the seat of my pants." :lmao:

I have READ this series and absolutely loved them. Did you find listening better than reading. I don't usually read something twice but if you felt it was better then I might consider it. I am listening to Eldest again but that is because I had three months where I was doing my walking indoors to a video series and didn't listen and I was in the middle of the book.
I really enjoyed them even though I did read the actual books. In fact, similar to what you're doing, they were a motivator for me. I allowed myself a new tape as a reward for every 10lbs lost. I would finish one tape and really want the next one, so that motivated me to lose the weight.

What a brilliant idea... let the DD pack HER OWN lunch! Let me see - how shall I swing this. I'mgoing to try to implement this ... only ... DRAT! She lets out of school in a couple of weeks ... No worries, I'll still start her on the concept. I am not running a restuarant here ya kno...

What a great reward. I know that it really does make me want to get up in the morning and walk. I missed listening to books when I was stuck working out inside during the cold icy months.

I said this months before they even announced the new ships....Lisa you can back me up on this one ....
As I said before the New ships will home in PC , they will not take a new ship to CA till 2015 when the Panama Canal has the third lane for the wider ships ...When the first ship ports at PC more then likely the Wonder will leave for the WC ;eaving the Magic and "Dreams" ported at PC ..Of course the Magic will then take over the 3 and 4 day while the "Dreams" takes over the 7 day sailings ....Once "Wishes" is done it will make way to PC with the Magic being the Floater ship to possibly be heading to the Med for awhile .....Now the Magic and Wonder could actually swap cause the Magic goes into dry dock before the Wonder would go back , so at dry dock the Magic could be fitted with a covered pool and heated areas on deck 9 and 10 so it could make voyages to Alaska ....but either way one of the older ships is going to the west coast .....
pirate:
Since when did they announce the NAMES of the new ships? Or is this a bit of guess work Todd? I was sort of holdin' out for them nameing one of the ships "CRASH" .... in honor of a certain loyal DIS & Disney Cruise enthusiast.

Dont worry about the assignments, it is a long way off, if DCL were inclined to have done it they would have by now, there will be some small movement, they know a few will cancel, but the big shake up wil lbe around pay day, they will juggle after that.
Point 1/ you are on the cruise, point 2/ you will get a room number.

I would have taken my child into the office of the director at the Y and demanded that something be done to correct their problem immediately! I don't think that you guys are overreacting at all.
I would of been livid! Not impressed with our Y, although the new building is nice.
When dd was between 1 and 2, I had her in a church daycare. I noticed that dd's clothes had small bleach stains on the back! Found out that they were using too much bleach in the cleaning solution they wiped the changing table with. They weren't drying it well and sometimes when I would pick her up I could smell the bleach. I was concerened because smelling bleach all day isn't good for you and alot of the stains where up by her neck- so the back of her head was probably getting it too. When I complained to the director about the bleach stains, she tells me that kids are hard on their clothes! I told her there is no reason my child should be playing with bleach! I told her I didn't appreciated adults ruining my kids clothes and she said she would not change her sanitation practices! We went back an forth about this and I and another mom left for work. The other mom told me everyone has complained about it, but she won't change it.
I got to work and went on the internet and found the state agency that licenses daycares. I called and got a real nice lady and explained what was going on. Turns out I had a valid complaint. Never had the problem again and the bleachy smell went away! Heck hath no fury like a mother on the warpath!
Tell Gabbie give 'em heck!
Thanks for thoughts (Tom too)...turns out that they have some STs in as nannies now that school is out. The STs get some kind of freebie or discount on their membership for putting time in with center operations. The head of the program is going to have a talk with them and reinforce that just because it's cloudy outside doesn't mean the kids are safe from sun exposure!
M could not agree more with what you are saying. I refer to it as the "Its all about me" generation but it the same thing. I have been trying to come up with a catchy logo for a bumper sticker with "Its NOT about you". Would make a fortune. We get kids out of school that just received their pharmacy license and they have never had a job in their lives.:scared1: They don't even know what is like to work, let alone work hard. :sad2: We have had the same message delivered in church on several occasions and I have tried to pass that on to my kids, but they still do not get that everyone is involved with life not just them. Now stepping down off my soapbox.
There was a recent report that many social scientists are saying that parents need to stop praising little Johnny every time he ties his shoe or poops a brick--at age 12--because we are raising a new generation of self-centered aholes!
I thought all the pirates here would find this Slate article interesting.
On the myth-confirming side, pirates were known to dress in loose clothing, guzzle rum and smash the empty bottles, and chase busty wenches through Caribbean ports.
I don't think DCL would appreciate us breaking bottles all over the ship!:rotfl2:
But chasing the busty crewmembers is within bounds? :teeth: :thumbsup2

How was the MED sailing? I presume you've gone and returned, yes? When those rates dropped we considered going too... but - we decided to stay home for now. Ya kno... the air fare was looking pretty stiff. How on Earth did you get decent air fare - or did you just pay the going rate... or use FF miles to get free seats? WHich would have implied you only used HALF your flights ... if so.
At any rate... all is well in general. The catchup situation is not so bad (I think)! ;) Especially compared to the heady days right after we booked!

Thanks so much, it is really good to be back.
The Med repo was awesome! We had a really good time, the only thing I did not like was setting the clocks forward an hour almost every night. :scared1:
We got pretty decent airfare that seemed to compare to most that were on board. Some were able to get a little better, some a little worse, but all in all, it wasn't too bad. We just went through cheap tickets and Swiss air (we really liked them), and flew into Geneva for an hour layover and then into JFK (alot of people from our cruise on our flight). It was about $550 pp including tax to get from Barcelona all the way back to the west in Idaho (We don't have as much cheap flights as the east coasters do :()
For such a cheap cruise, the cost still added up, but we are so glad we were able to go! There were alot of Disers that are also on the westbound PC 2008 cruise, but I think there was only one other on the August one with me.

Your right. It's just that we have to plan our flights to Ca. It's hard to buy plane tickets when your not sure if you have a room or not. i'm sure everything will work out in the end. This drives my wife mad!
But you have a GTY right? So you know you will be on the ship somewhere, right?
Well, I don't think they all look alike to the wenches :goodvibes . I am definately a Patrick Swayze women myself  ...you had me at "ditto", Patrick :rotfl:

There were alot of Disers that are also on the westbound PC 2008 cruise, but I think there was only one other on the August one with me.
http://www.scottishjobs.com/logos/FairDeal.gif
Now... $550 DOES sound pretty reasonable. We were looking at a regular sailing R/t from Barcelona as opposed to the repo. The fares for the weeks we were examining were about $1700-1900 and... for the four of us represented 6800-9600... plus the cruise which was very reseasnable at about 5600 as I recall. And for that... the total was not really all that bad except we're accustomed to flying into europe for $800 as the most we've paid in the past. They have round the world cruises that run about $14K spanning 100 days (I just got a brochure from a TA a couple of days ago featuring it)... and THAT by comparison would be a bargain compared to $12,400~15,200 for 4 for a little under 2 weeks. Of course... it's all neither here nor there... because spending $14K for one is ONE thing... but spending $56 for four is another entirely (compared to $12.4-15.2K for 4). ONE day I would like to think we'd do a MED sailing.... AND one day a round the world voyage. I don't need to sail Crystal for $56K PP... just a nice relatively inexpensive ship on HAL would be fine!
Tell us all about your cruise.:flower3: We have read some really scary trip reports. I would love to hear about your trip and so would everyone else.:woohoo: Wecome back!!!:grouphug:

"Really Scary TRIP REPORTS???" I'm shocked to hear of it!!! Now this is somethign I had not heard of. However, I too await your trip report and snap shots. As yargrnhoj has mentioned... I would welcome the chance to share in your vacation story as my spouse and I (like yargrnhoj) am unlikely to do it this season!

Terrific...a coworker trying to get out of here is delayed because Denver airport is at a Ground Stop. Delays are going on 5 hours due to high winds. And now this email just arrived:
Subject: Trees Falling on South Side of Tech II
Importance: High
We just lost one tree due to wind on the south side of Tech II. Please circulate this to all of your employees so that anyone who is parked on the south side by the building can move their cars in case another one goes.
Thanks,

Not sure if you have read or are a fan of the Left Behind series. I loved reading the books but I really enjoyed the dramatic presentations on tape too. You listen to it as if listening to a movie rather than listen to the book being read.

Oh yeah!!!!!!!!That is great news for us locals.....
I really like living in FL (blasphemy, I know) but I sure do miss the cost of living!
How long have you been gone from here? The cost of living in Florida has gone through the roof in the last 12 years that we have been here. Housing is rated as one of the steepest increases in the country. Crime is through the roof......Property taxes are getting ready to be overhauled but it will probaly mean an increase in sales tax to 8.5% I think it is.......It used to be the cost of living here was ok, definitely not as inexpensive as most states but now it has crept up. The least expensive home in our whole end of town is $500,000. The townhomes and condos are al atleast that much. All the apartments got bought up and sold for condos and they easily are selling for $550,000. and up. You can of course do a little better the farther out you go. This is so good I just had to post:
A woman goes into Wal-Mart to buy a rod and reel for her grandson's birthday. She doesn't know which one to get, so she just grabs one, and goes over to the counter.
A Wal-Mart associate is standing there wearing dark shades.... She says, "Excuse me, sir. Can you tell me anything about this rod and reel?" He says, "Ma'am, I'm completely blind; but if you'll drop it on the counter, I can tell you everything you need to know about it from the sound it makes. She doesn't believe him but drops it on the counter anyway.
He says, "That's a six-foot Shakespeare graphite rod with a Zebco 404 reel and 10-LB test line. It's a good all around combination; and it's on sale this week for only $20.00." She says, "It's amazing that you can tell all that just by the sound of it dropping on the counter. I'll take it!" As she opens her purse, her credit card drops on the floor. "Oh, that sounds like a Master Card," he says. She bends down to pick it up and accidentally breaks wind.
At first she is really embarrassed, but then realizes there is no way the blind clerk could tell who it was. The man rings up the sale and says, "That'll be $34.50 please". The woman is totally confused by this and asks, "Didn't you tell me it was on sale for $20.00? How did you get $34.50?"
He replies, "Yes, Ma'am. The rod and reel is $20.00, but the Duck Call is $11.00 and the Catfish Bait is $3.50."

Hello Everyone!
Well I am about to drop a bit of bad news.
Looks like my DS might have to do summer school, this mean I need to quit my job, this means I have to cancel our TOAL!!!!
Now that makes me more sad then you guys will ever know, but honestly I have to get out of my job before it kills me! I need to take the summer off and regroup, spend time with my kids and then see what September brings.
I won't cancel my cabins yet, because, well, maybe I'll hit the lottery or something between now and then. But my plan is to give my 2 weeks tomorrow.
I hope you'll still let me visit with you guys!!
I also will need to pass the cordless blender to one of you :sad1:

All the apartments got bought up and sold for condos and they easily are selling for $550,000. and up. You can of course do a little better the farther out you go. Arlene, what about your neck of the woods?
The prices of the home here are much less than your area.I'm around 40 miles up the road from the Mouse. We bought this 3br 2 1/2 bath with garage Townhome in 92 for 74,000 and last year when the prices were ripe they were asking around 240.Prices have really gone down from then but they are still up there. Oh I hear more thunder and the trees are really blowing. Looks like we getting some more rain.
I had not heard that the RE valuagtions had moved up so nicely in FL. I used to travel frequently to FL for business and always glanceed at property values... and I can recall when entry level homes were something like $110-140K in the SE quadrant of Orlando which excludes Kissimee/airport and what I think is the NE. Out here we just had a sharp decline over the last month reported. I forgot how mouch exxcatly it was - but I stopped in to chat with a RE pal today - he brings me sweet deals - and we felt it would run south at least another half year (and longer).
And on the property tax issue... we've had property tax reform for some time out here. Thank God for that... it was referred to as prop 13 and locked in your basis at the point where you purchased - with limited increases (or decreases) allowed in subsequent years. Plus a few other minor benefits were legislated in. Like having the ability to sell and take your exisiting property tax basis with you to the next home provided it met certain rules: such as you having to be age 55+; the new purchase must be = or less then the selling price of your home and the county you are leaving and moving to must participate in this program. SO... you could have lived in a home for 30 years and bought it at 75K... and todays property tax bnasis is 250K while you sold it for 900K. The property tax savings is a whopping 500K or roughly 5K a year! If you move to another home in a California county that participates AND you are age 55+ AND the new home is = or under $900K then you retain your original property tax basis of $250K! The savings over 10 years would be about $50K excluding the time value of the savings!
SO... I've heard of folks elsewhere having thier property taxes double in recent years... and that's gotta be pretty annoying. It would represent the largest and fastest moving cost component of housing where you don't repurchase - or refi to take money out.
At any rate... I am always interested in listening to what it's like to live elsewhere in this fine nation of ours. Many places have lower costs of living and we could conceivably relocate and have a newer and larger home for less money... thus relaxing some of the tension with housing. I figure its' gotta be nicer all over if only we knew where to look...?

Hey David!
I don't think there will be room assignments till next year. Andrew mentioned this months ago when everyone was in a panic. We'll probably need to pay off the cruise before we see a stateroom.
My condolences by the way.
The post that started the latest round of discussion on the room assignments, if I remember correctly, said they had paid it off in full, making me wonder if as soon as you pay in full you do get a room....

We were there 1998-2001. We didn't live in golf and country club land. We lived out with the cows in Parrish. DH worked in St. Pete & we lived a few miles south of the Sunshine Skyway in Manatee County (Ellenton Outlet Mall exit). DS8 was a baby, I was a SAHM & we bought our first house - new construction, several upgrades, 1600 sq. ft. 4 bed, 2 bath, huge lanai, 2 car garage on a pond....$108,000! We sold it 2 years later for $140,000. Our neighborhood was across the street from a swanky gated golf development - River Something - our neighborhood motto: We Ain't Rich, But We Can See It From Here!
Groceries and other things were much cheaper than any other place we've lived (San Diego, south east Connecticut, and Alaska - none know for lowlow prices!)
BTW - we don't have a McMansion, we would all kill eachother in 1600 sq. feet now!
UmmmmNO!
This is just the galaxy's way of getting you to run screaming from your yucker job and get a newer better superty duper job!

I want to tell you guys how much your support means to me! Truly! I really hope that I will get another job, an awesome job, and still be able to TOAL with all of you. Even thinking about not going breaks my heart. I really do need to get out of my job though even if my son manages to dodge the summer school bullet.
I have worked in this toxic environment for 2 1/2 years and I have resigned four times. Each time they threw me some money (a bone they call it) and I caved. But it's not about the money, it never is, it's about a lack of respect. I need to steel myself this time in order to be able to give two weeks notice and still get out. Maybe I should wait until Friday around 5pm. Hey, now that's a plan!
Thanks again everyone
This may seem like a stupid question (no wait, this group is used to these from me....), what do you do (jobwise) or what would you be looking for?
If any of us Jerseyites or Jerseyans or whatever we are called hears of something, we can send it to you ....

No need to cancel that cabin until you absolutely have to. Anything can happen, and I am a true believer that good things happen to good people. I am hoping all things fall into place and you still are able to take the TOAL that you truly derserve :grouphug:

Gee - MR --I was about to use this same quote. Or as I live my life - everything happens for a reason - although we don't always know what it is. I get very philosophical about the bumps in our road in life - of course I am half Greek! At any rate, PLEASE don't cancel yet. Mary Rose, so sorry you are feeling boxed in . Don't make any rash decisions as you have til May to make your final decision. Sometimes bad things happen for the best. My mom always told me you close a door and another opens. In our case sometimes the door opened to a brick wall :rotfl2: but the last job change I made was for the most part the best change I ever made.AS for the Summer school is it that he needs tansportation and you are it?
I can only speak for Central Massachusetts....
Three years ago our property values (for my home anyway) have had an increase by about $200,000 only to decrease by about $100,000 in the past year with an increase in taxes of about $1400.00 over the last 11 years. Right now, in my neck of the woods, it is a total BUYERS market for first time home owners.
We have "Prop 2 1/2" that has been in place for many years here in Mass. Basically it is a cap on the percentage that local property taxes can be raised without an override from the voters. It does keep the property taxes down, IMO. You have to present a pretty strong case to the taxpayers to get them to approve an override.

Now tell me if I am wrong as I am no math wizard!!! :lmao: If I paid off my balance which is $6500, I would lose $325. :sad1: I am getting 5% interest (at least) for almost a year. Just to get a stateroom number, each of the room numbers is costing $81.25 which equals $325.00.:teacher: Do we really want to pay now???? :rolleyes1

You have to be careful though...some of the very affluent communities have no problem approving an override because, well, they are rich and can afford it. The more middle class communities are not so willy to open thier wallets to a Prop 2 1/2 overide. The next town over from me (Sudbury, MA) is very affluent and their taxes are through the roof compared to us.

You have to love yourself enough not to put up with someone being so outwardly cruel to you. You are my true buddy no matter what and we will party together soon. As far as your DS and summer school--we all do what we have to do for our kids futures. I really think this is a no brainer decision. Besides you can always come see me for vacation.

The rod and reel is $20.00, but the Duck Call is $11.00 and the Catfish Bait is $3.50."
chuckles...
