We personally like Rafiki's Planet Watch...and we don't have kids. We take it as a break to go back and check out the wonderful pavillion of learning about animals. JMHO.

BEST:
1. Splash Mountain
2. RNRC
3. BTMR
4. TOT
5. Safari

Worst:
1. It's a small world (the song is too much over and over and over and over... :)
2. Tomorrowland Speedway (waste of space imho)
3. Treehouse (great concept but nothin to DO)
4. Living Seas (can we get a ride here please????)
5. 20,000 leagues under the sea *WASTED SPACE* do something! :)

...here're my current, off the top of my head lists. My caveat, this is WDW only.

Best

1. Pirates of the Caribbean
2. Haunted Mansion
3. Space Mountain
4. Tower of Terror
5. Fantasyland dark rides (okay, I know this is cheating. But I wanted to recognize that Peter Pan's Flight and Snow White's Scary Adventures both contain some of the lowest-tech yet highest impact effects in the parks. I'm probably one of about four people who considers Snow White a must-do)

Worst

1. Dinosaur (yes, that's "Dinosaur," not Dino-Rama)
2. Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, Play It
3. Main Street Cinema
4. Journey Into Your Imagination
5. Tomorrowland Transit Authority (Oh, the difference a voice-over can make. Twenty years or more ago, the fascinating and educational WEDway PeopleMover was one of my favorite rides. Today's insipid "next station" spiel makes it almost unbearable, and completely vapid)

And I thought I would get slammed for listing Country Bear on the "worst" list!!:D
Also agree with Living Seas as one or the worst!!! ;)

It's not the whole Rafiki's Planet watch I dislike.....just the so-called petting zoo!!!! YUK!!
The pavilion is nice, but those goats!!! GROSS!

JeffJewll, I almost listed Dinosaur on the "worst" list too! DD and I HATE it, but DH likes it! But what does he know!;)

I thought the Main Street Cinema was just a shop??? Not an attraction

The Five best at WDW:

5 - The Haunted Mansion

Honorable mentions go to The Great Movie Ride and The Land.

The five worst at WDW:

5 - Tomorrowland speedway
4 - Ellen's Energy Adventure (since JIYI is gone)
3 - Test Track
2 - Dinorama
1 - Backstage Pass

Top Five at WDW

1. Splash Mountain
2. Space Mountain
3. Rock-n-roller
4. Peter Pan
5. Pirates (followed by Buzz, Spaceship Earth, Cranium Command, Dinosaur, Festival of Lion King, Winnie the Pooh, Snow White, Big Thunder, Killimanjaro Safari, Star Tours, --how do you rate all of these as being better than the other?)

Worst:

1. Conservation Train. Boring. Nice view of cement, and the backs of buildings, Mr. Eisner.
2. Pocohontas. Boring.
3. Tomorrow Land Speedway. I could think up, standing on my hand holding rocks with my feet, a thousand ways to make this a better attraction. Yes, the kids supposedly love it, but my, what a waste. IT NEEDS A COOL UPDATE.
4. Mexican water ride. River of Time? River of Lost Time? River of Wasted Time? River of Five-Minutes-I-Will-Never-Get-Back-Time.
5. JIYI. I never was a big fan of the original, and the new one is reportedly worse than that one? Oh, I may skip this one again on our next trip. ;)

4. Mexican water ride. River of Time? River of Lost Time? River of Wasted Time? River of Five-Minutes-I-Will-Never-Get-Back-Time. ;)

For what it's worth, I give El Rio del Tiempo a thumbs up based mostly on two effects... the beginning of the ride, with the pyramid on one side and the bustling little seaport town on the other, is one of the best "scenes" anywhere in WDW, I think. I'm not sure how many folks appreciate how well done the nighttime market scene really is... it's much easier to appreciate from the much maligned and often skipped boat ride.

And I also like the fireworks scene a lot... another example of fairly low tech parts creating a very effective whole.

Jeff

PS: and of course, the "marketplace" movies where the vendors follow your boat reminds me of my early days on If You Had Wings... If You Had Wings... If You... Had Wings... Had Wings... Had Wings...

Top Five at WDW:
1) Tower of Terror - so detailed, it's amazing!
2) Splash Mountain - love the storyline and it's a great ride, too
3) Hunchback of Notre Dame Show - the best live entertainment in the parks
4) Cranium Command - although a little dated, this is a definite must-see for us
5) Great Movie Ride - great animatronics, great ride
Close Calls: Buzz Lightyear, Haunted Mansion, Pirates, Peter Pan's Flight, Spaceship Earth, American Adventure, Rock 'N' Roller Coaster, Muppets 3D, Voyage of the Little Mermaid, Kilamanjaro Safaris, Dinosaur

Bottom Five:
5) Pocahontas and Her Friends - the first of two AK shows on my worst list
4) El Rio del Tiempo - we ride this so we can make fun of it the whole time
3) Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular - It was once great, but now it just seems tired
2) Speedway - And this fits into Tomorrowland how?
1) Tarzan Rocks! - Nothing but a bunch of noise
Close Calls: Teacups, Body Wars, Living Seas pavillion

WDW Only, ain't been anywheres else.

Top 5 (JJ & GC are thinking fairly alike):

1. Pirates
2. Mansion
3. Splash
4. Space
5. Tower

Bottom 5:

101. Body Wars. Glub, glub, puke, puke
102. Wilderness Express, Conservation Station, Rafiki's Planet Watch
103. Journey into Your Imagination. They haven't officially replaced it yet.
104. Speedway. Loud, smelly, has no place in Verne/Orwell Tomorrowland
105. Leave a Legacy - yes, it's listed as an "attraction."

I left shows out of the mix. I have a tie for number one: Hunchback & Fantasmic, and Tarzan Rocks stands alone at the bottom.

Jeff, I will admit to you that my wife and I make a point of either eating a dinner or lunch, or just a dessert each visit at the Mexican pavilian because of the 'scenery.' The ambience from the dining area is not to be missed, and the market area is fun if you hang out for a while. One of my best memories is when my daughter and a bunch of other kids got invited to a traditional dance with some of the drummers. The pictures are priceless, and the CM/dancers were fantastic.

I'll give you that point. But the ride itself is...hmm...lame. It doesn't feel outdated like other attractions, and quaint in that regard. I remember going to Epcot just after the pavilion opened, and we still felt the same way. Sort of like they only had so much money to do the ride, and did it on the cheap. Too bad, because the pavilian is a must see.

JeffJewell
03-19-2002, 02:19 PM
I'll give you that point. But the ride itself is...hmm...lame. Yeah, I know what you mean. I didn't mean to argue that much, just wanted to make a point about some aspects of the ride that showed me a spark of Magic.

The 'Scoop PM'ed me a little while ago, inquiring about what my ulterior motive might have been for putting Dinosaur at the top of my "worst" list, and I guess it's because of exactly the opposite feeling I get from these two rides. I go on el Rio, and I can find some Magic nuggets laying around in the lameness. With Dinosaur, even though I almost certainly actually _ride_ it more than el Rio (sometimes it's fun to be thrown around a bit), I just don't see those nuggets, in a ride that, by rights, should have _everything_ over el Rio. Every aspect of Dinosaur was executed in what I consider an "anti-Disney," or at least "non-Disney," way.

Anyway, I realize that I'm dangerously close to dragging this thread back to the same exact conversation we all always have... so I'll try to let it go at that... and I apologize to everyone for this behavior.

Jeff

PS: No, I don't think it's inconsistent to be able to enjoy a ride on one's "worst" list, just as I don't think it's inconsistent that one might generally avoid a ride on their "best" list. I think that defines the difference between personal taste and an objective assessment of characteristics.

Have only been to WDW, so my list only includes attractions from FL ...

BEST
1. Fantasmic! IMHO the best theme park attraction anywhere
2. Splash Mountain
3. Timekeeper ... am I the only one?
4. World Showcase -- as a whole. My wife and I LOVE to hang out in the different countries. Yes, I know that they are Disneyfied, even stereotypical at times, but it is the closest we will get to most of these countries and (like most of EPCOT) the only theme park attraction area of it's kind
5. Share a Dream Come True parade/Cinderella's Surprise Celebration (tie) -- watching these with my kids and seeing the looks on their faces of joy, amazement, wonder, etc. almost brings tears to my eyes, and isn't that what Walt's Dream was all about?

Best restaurant -- Cindy's: Best food we have had on propoerty, atmosphere doesn't hurt

WORST
5. Star Tours -- DS and I are HUGE SW fans. Have been to SW weekend, seen all the movies, but, for the love of George ... UPDATE THIS RIDE!!!!!!!!!!! How many times can it be Rex's first flight?
4. Aladdin's Magic Carpets, Triceratop Spin, Astro Orbiter -- Dumbo get's left out of the mix because it was the original, but how much money are we going to spend on blatant rip-offs of existing (smaller) attractions, at the expense of a new E-ride every other year?
3. The Aerosmith intro to RnR: Just let me on the ride, already! Make it like The Living Seas and give guests the option to skip the pre-show.
2. Country Bears -- not even my 2- or 5-year-old like it. (Dodging bullets)
1. Any ride closed to make room for "character greeting area". Not the rides themselves, but the idea behind it. Save money on rehab, update, staffing, new attraction; throw a couple characters in front of it and nobody will notice it. (Skyway, Timekeeper, 20, 000 Leagues, etc.)

Best:

1. Pirates of the Carribean
2. Splash Mountain
3. Tower of Terror
4. Matterhorn
5. Space Mountain

Honorable Mention (no particular order): Indiana Jones (DL), Kilamanjaro Safaris, Dinosaur, Peter Pan, Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain, Soarin' Over California, Jungle Cruise, Original Tiki Room, Rock n Roller Coaster, Tea Cups (my son's favorite at 2 years old), American Adventure, Universe of Energy

Worst:

1. Body Wars (gross)
2. Innoventions (DL. Its a terrible fit for Disneyland. I can deal with it in Epcot.)
3. Superstar Limo
4. Maliboomer (Just doesn't fit)
5. Orange Stinger (A weight limit???)

That's about it. Everything else I like to at least some degree.

Please share why one of TheDScoop's all-time favorite ride in the world does or does not make some of your lists ...Test Track didn't make my best or my worst list. It's an okay ride, there's nothing so bad about it that I needed to get it on the worst list, there just isn't anything good enough about it to get it on the best list, either.

I think that TT is more of a ride than a pavilion (caveat: I've not seen the new post-show), and that disappoints me for FutureWorld. I think that a model of a current day automotive proving ground isn't particularly Magical, educational, or Future-looking, again a disappointment for FutureWorld. I find the indoor section of the ride to be rather boring, with particularly poor special effects in the non-Antilock brake and "evasive manuever" sections (it also bugs me that the final bust-though "wall" is so obvious and that the speed indicators are so blatantly meaningless, but I may be the only person who notices those things), and poorly done effects in Disney rides are the bane of my existence. I feel the "who needs theming when you're going this fast through backstage areas" is another disappointing concession to cost. As far as I can tell, the unique "ride mech" is mostly safety devices to keep the souped-up Speedway cars from flying off into the parking lot, a merely evolutionary change over a ride most don't seem to consider fit for MK's Tomorrowland (as opposed to, say, the more revolutionary step that ToT's ride mech made past other free-fall type rides).

All of those things, to me, add up to a ride that is simply less than what I expect from one of WDW's flagship rides. Not bad, per se, but certainly not one of their best.

Jeff

PS: My own TT ride habits, you ask? If we can get a FastPass for a time not unreasonably far flung, we'll usually ride it (only five out of eight of the "big plan" Jewell clan can ride the thing at all, and two of those don't really care about it that much). I do like the outside part of the ride a lot, but it's nothing we go out of our way for. It's not like Snow White's Scary Adventures, or anything. ;)

Please share why one of TheDScoop's all-time favorite ride in the world does or does not make some of your listsTo define "Disney Attraction" it's easiest for me to use 8 words: Pirates of the Caribbean and The Haunted Mansion. The impact and influence that those two attractions have had on the world of theme parks is enormous. Sure, they don't get the queues that they once did, but to me that doesn't matter. They were as innovative as any attraction ever built anywhere, in my opinion.

When I was a kid, Space Mountain was the flat-out coolest thing on the planet. I had never experienced anything anywhere near as good and thought I never would again.

Now, I'm down to only two slots left for a top 5. In terms of "modern marvels" I put Tower of Terror very near (if not at) the top. The drop sequence is just a tiny part of the overall, immersive, fantastic experience.

Splash Mountain makes my list because it is such a "full" attraction. It greatly exceeds expectations. It is a very long attraction for a flume ride, and is filled with so many animatronics and such wonderful music and sights. It just keeps going and going.

Test Track just can't top any of those experiences in my book. It's alot of fun, but it just doesn't have any of the elements that would put it ahead of even one of my top 5.

raidermatt
03-19-2002, 06:12 PM
Top 5 reasons Test Track didn't make my best attractions list:

5- Outdoor section dried out my contacts.

4- Steering wheel didn't work.

3- CM wouldn't let me hang fuzzy dice from rear-view mirror.

2- Had to pick love bugs out of my teeth afterwards.

1- Recurring nightmares due to vision of "dummy" getting sand bag in the groin in queue area.

:D

Seriously though, Jeff summed it up for me pretty much as well. Its a nice ride. I understand the themeing, but find the idea of being immersed in an automobile proving ground less Magical than being immersed in a Spaceport (a la Space Mountain).

JeffJewell
03-19-2002, 06:25 PM
As for Space Mountain, my feelings about it are basically the same as Jeff's about Test Track. It's okay. Nice. Not bad. But (and I know this is heresy to some) for me its just basically a wild mouse in the dark with decent music. ...hey, if they'd built Test Track 30 years ago in Magic Kingdom instead of FutureWorld, a great many of my disappointments would evaporate. Conversely, if Space Mountain as we know it was currently being installed instead of Mission:Space, believe me, I'd wail about it.

Context, son. Ya keep, I say, ya keep nee-glecting the context.

I still believe your insistence to avoid the context of the decade in which rides were built (and the orders of magnitude of difference in Disney's available capital across those decades) weakens your "the new is as good as the old" argument to the point of irrelevancy.

Jeff

PS: this is where you let your "newbie" issue unfocus your argument. If you first saw Space Mountain in comparison to roller coasters of the early 1970's you'd see some serious Magic. If you first see it in comparison to late 1990's coasters, my response to your relative disappointment in that situation is "well, duh."

There is a line in ‘Star Tours’ that neatly summarizes what the best attractions do. Right before you start to fly over the Death Star, the pilot says “I’ve always wanted to do this!” Disney is at its best when it puts you into the “middle of the action”, when it puts you in a childhood adventure that you’ve always wanted to have. Disney is best when it takes the “wish fulfillment” aspect of movies and turns it into a “real life” experience.

All in WDW:

Best:
1. Haunted Mansion
2. RocknRoller Coaster
3. Peter Pan's Flight
4. Spaceship Earth
5. Norway

Honorable mention to the Maharajah Jungle Trek (loved it!) and Buzz simply because it's a blast! Not to mention the Marketplace for me. :D

Worst:
1. Tomorrowland Speedway
2. Mad Tea Party
3. JIYI (what were they thinking?)
4. The Living Seas (this COULD be great)
5. Dinorama

I must give a thumbs up to El Rio Del Tiempo too for two reasons. It's a great ride for kids in a park that's lacking and it's also a wonderful place to cool off on a hot day. It's a friendly little ride and not annoying at all to me unlike my bottom 5.

As for Test Track, it was interesting and different but not fun to me like my top list or even its predecessor. But my 9 year old declares it his favorite in all of WDW so there's another fan.

Well, the award for first use of the Foghorn Leghorn voice on the Rumors board goes to Jewell.

Scoop, come on dude, badmouthing Space Mountain? 1) You are a big Disney fan. 2) You are a guy. It's kinda like yellow and blue make green.

Perhaps context rules in this case, but I find it still tells a great story. It's not just a roller coaster in the dark. It's space travel. The use of a rocket to get from one place in the galaxy to another. You've even got a control tower. The flight information, the countdown, the reentry, it all works. And, yes, it was an utterly amazing experience for an 11 year old kid back in the mid 1970's. A rite of passage amongst my buddies in Northern Virginia at the time. A time we were going to see Star Wars every weekend. Indeed, context is important. But, dude, come on. It's Space Mountain for crying out loud.

Sometimes your posts come off much sharper than surely intended. ...yeah, it's a gift.
My point is not to pick attractions out of the decades and compare but to compare with what was from that decade. I'm down with that, and don't really disagree with anything you just said. In the post I was responding to, you spoke of Space Mountain mostly in relation to Test Track and Primeval Whirl, and I riffed off of that tangent to the actual "list" topic. I wasn't attempting to argue SM onto your list.

I started reading the thread...but I should probably pop out my best and worst lists before I get influenced by other's thoughts...

Just WDW here...never been west of PA.

Best
1. Peter Pan's Flight
2. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
3. Splash Mountain
4. Pirates of the Caribbean
5. Space Mountain

I love so many others though!

There really are no attractions I hate at WDW (oops, sorry, forgot the dinocrap) ...and putting them on my worst list does not mean I want them taken away...more that they should be improved, but here are my worsts and why..
1. Pocahontas show (not bad, but obviously just a filler)
2. The Land boat ride (thumbs down because of misinformation and Nestle {babykillers} sponsorship...otherwise interesting)
3. Kali River Rapids (way too short, storyline isn't conveyed well, kinda boring....only excitement is the possibility of getting soaked and being miserably wet and smelly for the rest of the day)
4. Dino Rama (this one can be taken away)
5. Aladdin's Magic Carpets (cute enough spinner..fun too...but the placement of it is bad. Really changes Adventureland in an unpleasant way...and can be easily seen from Frontierland, which effects the show there as well.)

Just WDW here...never been west of PA.

Best

2. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
3. Splash Mountain
4. Pirates of the Caribbean
5. Space Mountain

My Best
1. Splash
2. ToT
3. Haunted Mansion
4. Muppets
5. Space
6. SpectroMagic for a parade
(I went with six to meet my Disney “full day” quota)

TT is OK, just too everyday (a car that climbs a hill, brakes, and can drive over bumpy roads, wow). The hot and cold rooms are different, but we also have the lame corrosion scene. Even the high speed turn is not that unique. That is if you’ve ever been leaving the parks at closing and suddenly see your exit is 3 lanes over.

Instead of Disney worst how about US best for comparison
1. Spiderman
2. MIB (has to be done at least 3 times)
3. Terminator
4. BTTF
5. Jurrasic
6. Hulk

Now this would be some park.

gosh, get a little tired of the best/worst lists and the next thing you know you're from Iowa :bounce: :bounce:

Best:

1. Pirates of the Caribbean (DL Version)
2. Haunted Mansion (DL Version, cause of the elevator, although if WDW ever had a redo where people enter the actual door and had DL's elevator, I'd go WDW's version)
3. American Adventure
4. Carousel of Progress
5. TIE WDW's Splash Mountain & DL's Indiana Jones

Worst:

1. Arcades w/ non Disney games (TL ones in both WDW & DL, boardwalk games) Sam McKim's Pirate games from DL were awesome though.
2. Paradise Pier minus the Sun Wheel (Stinger, Mullholland, Maliboomer, Jumping Jellyfish)
3. Cosmic Waves (it's listed as an attraction!)
4. DL's Astro Orbiter (why stick it on the ground!)
5. Sounds Dangerous (I just went to disney.com to see if this still existed or if it was a closure casualty and I saw that "Pin Trading" is listed as an ATTRACTION!!!!! )

The things you learn on Disney.com

Triceratops Spin is a "thrill ride"
Dumbo is an "all-time favorite" while Peter Pan is mearly a "kid's favorite"

Curiously, two of this forums most notorious posters have yet to share their Top Fives (namely Baron and Voice). Might this be because they are the same person? Seems like a decent rumor to me. My God, Scoop!!! I’m blushing all over!!! Thanks for the compliment, but just look at the writing styles. AV shoves a verb next to a noun much better than I could ever hope to. But thanks anyway!! (Besides, I’m still betting AV’s a drop dead beautiful babe. Now dating OWTS!!)

Naw. The real reason is I’ve been a bit busy lately. While I deplore lists as a basis for an argument or evidence in a debate, this type is fun. I just haven’t had time to reply. But I have read it and found the responses… enlightening. So many the same and yet quite a few surprises!

You know, every time I do one of these things they are never the same. This time Cranium Command didn’t make the list (maybe I bowed to peer pressure). I purposely left live shows and parades off the list. I don’t care what the “official” Disney spin is, they are NOT attractions!!! They are plusses!! Extras!!! How dare they think they can…. Ooops! Got carried away. Sorry. Anyway, as of this moment here it is:

1- Pirates of the Caribbean
2- Splash Mountain
3- Haunted Mansion
4- The American Adventure
5- Tower of Terror

Very honorable mentions to: Buzz, Spaceship Earth, Cranium Command, Killimanjaro Safari, Peter Pan's Rock 'N' Roller Coaster, CoP, Muppets, Mickey Mouse Review (God, I loved that show!!) and almost everything else!!!

1- Dinosaur
2- Test Track
3- Tomorrow Land Speedway
4- Kali River Rapids
5- Aladdin's Magic Carpets, Triceratop Spin!

Dishonorable mentions: Innoventions, Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular, Fantasmic

Just a couple of other thoughts on some of the posts within this thread:I'm probably one of about four people who considers Snow White a must-doSorry JJ. I guess this is the 1% that we part company on (I do agree with 99% of everything you say). But I’m right with you on Peter Pan. I always thought with just a little more effort, they would have had an “E” ticket with that one. Anyway, it’s by far, the best of the “D” tickets!! At least with the disappearance of the Mickey Mouse Review! Tomorrowland Transit Authority (Oh, the difference a voice-over can make. Twenty years or more ago, the fascinating and educational WEDway PeopleMover was one of my favorite rides. Today's insipid "next station" spiel makes it almost unbearable, and completely vapid)Hmmm. Did I write this? No, JJ did. But I’ve thought it! Over and over and over and over…. Again!!! Also agree with Living Seas as one or the worst!!!Hmmm. Has anyone really explored this pavilion? Yeah the ride is lame, but the pavilion is wonderful. I always thought the place was lame too, until a thunderstorm trapped us inside the building for several hours (instead of the usual ½ hour, breezing past everything at a breakneck speed) and we were really forced to look deep into some of the stuff. WONDERFUL!!! A hidden treasure! Try it sometime. PS: and of course, the "marketplace" movies where the vendors follow your boat reminds me of my early days on If You Had Wings... If You Had Wings... If You... Had Wings... Had Wings... Had Wings...My goodness JJ!! Did you and I have the exact same reaction to WDW in our younger days!?!? Once again, your take on the whole ‘Mexico’ thing mirror my thoughts, to a tee!!

I've only been to WDW so all of mine are based on that

BEST

1. Splash Mountain
2. Tower of Terror
3. Rock N Roller Coaster
4. Dinosaur
5. Peter Pan's Flight

WORST

1. It's a Small World
2. Dumbo

That's all...sorry!! I can't really say I hate any rides except it's a small world....

JeffJewell
03-21-2002, 08:52 AM
My goodness JJ!! Did you and I have the exact same reaction to WDW in our younger days!?!? ...well, that sure would explain some things, wouldn't it?

Jeff

PS: (I'm obviously just looking for abuse, at this point) There are three things that stand out to me about Snow White's Scary Adventures. First, the way the ride mech swings the tail of the car slightly to present the desired scene from the desired angle is nearly flawless (much better than, say, Pooh, which points you in some odd directions in some scenes. That's one of the reasons I strongly suspect they used at least some of the same exact ride path from Mr. Toad and just repainted the scenes around it)... the "cinematography" in Snow White rivals that of Pirates, to my way of thinking (albeit on a significantly smaller scale). Also, I feel the Queen/Witch transformation and the Snow White/lightning scene are stunningly good examples of using simple components and a lot of care in planning and execution to create very effective scenes. And the sucker just runs and runs.

I am a little cranky that they changed the Witch pushing the rock scene. It's almost difficult to tell that's what's happening, sometimes.

All that said, I fully realize a lot of people just see the ride as a not particularly souped up funhouse. Differ'nt strokes, and all.

Best of the Best:
5. Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin (Even though it is in dire need of a rehab)
4. TOT (as great as the show itself)
3. Rock 'n' Roller Coaster (Best First 2.61 seconds of a ride ever)
2. Test Track (Nothing specific just the entire ride!)
and the top prize goes to...
1.THE HAUNTED MANSION! (Theres always room for one more...)

:(
Now for the Bottom of the Barrel
5. Speedway (Its loud. Its smelly. It does not belong!)
4. Its A Small World (Make the song stop!!!)
3. Dumbo (Up. Down. Spin in circles. Repeat untill bored stupid.)
2. All of Micky's ToonTown Fair (No, just no.)
and the worst is...
1. The Hall Of Presidents ( I don't care about history on my vaction.)

DISCLAIMER: IF YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH ME THAT IS YOUR RIGHT. SO PLEASE NO HATE MAIL, BASHING, AND IN OTHER WORDS DON'T GET ANGRY. JUST STAY COOL.

I want to thank everyone very much who has shared their opinions so far. I have found your lists to very enlightening. While there has been some consistancy the ones that stand out have really surprised me. LandBaron, Oh how do I wish Voice was a beautiful babe it would have solved all my problems. Oh, and I agree with you 100% on the Living Seas in fact that point you made of taking the time to enjoy the pavilion applies to all of EPCOT so many people spend only half a day in the park and complain about the lack of attractions in the park. I could easily spend 4 days in EPCOT fully exploring all the nations of the world showcase and the pavilions of future world. It is a same that so much of EPCOT is forgotten and ignored because of the fast paced, hurry up society we have today.

03-22-2002, 03:38 PM
Doug, I'd actually push Alien Encounter closer to my bottom five than the top. The preshow is a little mean spirited and the attraction scares the bejeezers out of a good segment of the WDW travelling public. So much so that it's caused kids to not want to do any more attractions. It's kind of an anti-Disney attraction to me. It holds the title of "most explicit set of warnings on property." I'm struggling to think of another example. Is this the only attraction where guests get to watch something get killed before their very eyes??

Doug123
03-22-2002, 03:48 PM
It is certainly not a "ride" for kids. And, yes, it's supposed to scare you!

I am going to change this thread a little. How about the BEST and WORST 5 attraction renovations/redos (at least in my recent memory):

Best:
1. "TakeFlight!" or whatever it was called beforehand into Buzz LYSR Spin
2. Timekeeper in for Circle vision (why this never caught on in popularity, I will never understand)
3. Snow White's renovation in the late 1990's in WDW (I think it is so much better now)
4. Enchanted Tiki Room Upgrade in WDW (I know I am going to get a lot of slack for putting that there---but this attraction's numbers have greatly increased since the change).
5. Universe of Energy into Ellen's Energy Adventure

Worst:
1. Journey Into Imagination (no comment necessary)
2. Wedway into RocketRods (the idea was great, but the execution horrible)
3. Pooh replacing Toad (I love the ride, but for cyring out loud put up another building and add a ride)
4. The replacement of Food Rocks for Kitchen Kaberet (again, a nice idea, but plywood figures don't impress me)
5. The replacement of the Skyway with two buildings themed to "condemended and haunted" dwellings on either end of the park.

Baron- I noticed you put Fantasmic in your dishonorable mention group. I think I have a pretty good idea about the other attractions on your worst/dishonorable list, but I'm curious why Fantasmic is on there. I'm sure you've probably explained before, but I was either brow-beating somebody on the Debate board or mowing my lawn. Would you mind giving your reasons?

Thanks!

Dave, not Skippy. The Alien. Whether he's (or she's) good or bad, it does get fried before our eyes. Hey, it's just one guy's opinion. I don't care for the attraction, it's just not a good Magic Kingdom fit to me. In fact, it's quite the opposite.

1a. Mansion (original disney, Sorry for the TIE!)
2. Splash Mountain (love the story, music and scenery - Disney at it's best!)
3. EPCOT World Showcase (w/ exception below)
4. TOT (my dw has never tried it and never will. She does not understand)
5. Safari

Bottom 5

5. Speedway (such long lines for such a crappy ride)
4. Toon Town (just had our first baby, maybe this will change)
3. Small World

Best in no particular order:

Pirates - classic
Haunted Mansion - ditto
Safari - refreshing
Peter Pan - had skipped this for years....it was a wonderful surprise!
Space Mountain - another classic

Least:

Simulators (motion sickness)
Any attraction that requires you need to stand (mostly movies)
Small World (annoying)
(TIE) Treehouse (boring), Conservation Station (boring and ugly)
Jungle Cruise (needs sprucing up)

HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED YET - Test Track (broke down last 2 visits), TOT (closed due to electrical storm?), RNR (not built last time at MGM)

REALLY REALLY MISS - Horizons, COP, Mr. Toad

3)TIKI ROOM (new or old management, both need to be sacked)

Worst
1. Body Wars. This was the only ride that made me sick
2. the robotics competetion going on...those chaperones should look up the meaning of chaperoning
3. O Canada. I do beleive that there is more than two provinces...
4. Tarzan Rocks. Expected more from teh movie than from its songs
5. Extraterrorestial Alien Encounter. I went on this after i had a sunburn and it was blistering, and during the end where the repeatedly lower and raise the safety bar chest restraint, it ripped the skin off leaving a nice scab.

Kali River rapids!?!

I love that ride - and my son (2 1/2) made me ride it twice - he couldn't stop laughing each time he got splashed! Could be longer though....

BEST:

1-Tower of Terror-best themed ride from beginning to end...not too sickening with up and down the only motions plus that great moment when the elevators moves horizontally- that the DCA version won't have that part is further proof of how poorly Disney understands how to put on the show anymore.

2-Buzz Lightyear- great idea, could have been done better, sure, and it needs some upkeep very soon, but a delightful theme well executed.

3-Listen to the Land-the first thing I ever did at EPCOT and has a special place in my heart. Started out so lame with that song and the roots system lit up that I thought, uh oh is this what the whole place is going to be like, and then it became this fascinating look at how things grow....I was won over right there.

4-Horizons- loved the idea of the future as seen in the past, the giant IMAX parts, the choose your ending, etc...I never understood why others did not like it.

5-Splash Mountain-Great job of taking an old ride and making it themed.

Since #4 is no more- I get to name Muppets 4D as my runner up.

WORST:
-Astro-orbiters-from the horrible line to the lame ride, a loser all the way.
-All character meet/greets-cheap, lame- to all who frequent these happy places I point my finger and say YOU ARE THE REASON FOR THE END OF EE, FOR THE GENERAL CHEAPENING OF THE PARKS, THANKS TO YOUR ACCEPTING THE THRILL OF A FOAM HEADED TEEN AS SOMETHING SPECIAL, ALL OF US NOW SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES!
-Any circle 3 D movie where you have to STAND UP throughout- Ugh! Stand in line, walk, and now we have to stand up and be made queasy?
Swiss Family Tree House- stand in line and/or at least walk up lots of steps-to see a set- no thanks.
Country Bears- lame , boring - if this feature film based on these guys is a hit-I will point my finger at those who made it so and say YOU ARE THE REASON THAT A CIVILIZATION IS DYING!

Best:

#1 Splash Mountain. The best ride in the universe!
#2 Tower of Terror
#3 Haunted Mansion
#4 Indiana Jones at DL
#5 Space Mountain

Worst.

#1 Kali River Rapids (My most disappointing Disney ride ever)
#2 Body Wars
#3 All of the Paradise Pier attractions except for California Screaming.
#4 JIYI (What the heck were they thinking?)
#5 The China Epcot Movie. (How many times can I fall asleep standing up?)

You know what's cool? I could go on and on with the "Best" list, and have to really think for the "worst list".

Here are my top 4:
1. Monorail
2. Splash Mountain
3. Tower of Terror
4. Pirates of the Carribean

There's nothing like a ride on the monorail to make me feel like I'm at WDW!

E-ticket rides that bother me:
Hmm. gotta think some more about this.

Five Winners
1. Haunted Mansion - Can never get tired of it. An example of Disney as its creative best.
2. Pirates of the Carribean - Again, I can never get tired of it. As in Haunted Mansion, the "ride" starts when you first stand in line until you're well outside the building.
3. Fantasmic - Ok, not a ride, but a great show.
4. Alien Encounter - What a great use of technology. Found it very exciting.
5. The Great Movie Ride - It needs updating (maybe they could update rooms as they do with Spaceship Earth), but still a great ride -- and actually follows the movie theme of the park!

Other favorites: Spaceship Earth, Dinosaur, Safari Ride, American Adventure, Splash Mountain, Space Mountain

Five Losers
1. Muppets 3-D: The "D" must stand for "disappointing." Whoa, is this a waste of time or what? Has anyone -- especially those at Disney -- visited the Terminator ride at Universal? Learn from the competition, boys...
2. Rio del Tiempo: Should be called "River of Bad Travel Ads For Mexico."
3. Pop Century: Ok, so not a ride, but I had to mention it. Unfortunately, the cheap, tacky resort will probably do well...all fear for our society.
4. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: I liked the ride as a kid, but it makes it into my top five loser list because it's just wasted space right now. You can't tell me that one Imagineer couldn't come up with a great idea, or that Disney doesn't have a few million sitting around (just take a percentage of how much I spent on food that last time I went should just about cover it), to build something new to fill the space.
5. Dino-land: Maybe they should have made it part of Pop Century. Each cost about $1.75 to design and build.
