What is the best way to make a room location request?

We're staying at CSR and AKL in early June. From these boards, I have learned that it pays off to request particular buildings and/or room locations. I need some advice from the seasoned WDW travellers ... what is the best way to go about making these requests and can you clue me in on the timing? Should I call CRO or fax to someone in particular? Should I do this as early as possible or wait until it is closer to our travel date? Any advice is appreciated.:D

Ideally, you should make the requests at the time that you make your reservation. List your requests so your most important one is listed first.
Since you're not going for a while, you could call CRO now and ask to have the requests added to your reservation. Be careful in requesting specific rooms or buildings though. If you are too specific, your request may not be able to be met and the resort may have no idea WHY you wanted that building - was it because it was close to the pool, close to the bus stop, the view or because it was non-smoking, etc.
