View Full Version : Anyone ever do a fast puff (biscuit) quilt? Think this will work?

I just got back from WDW a week ago and needless to say, I'm way behind on other things I usually do this time of year. I usually contribute a quilt to a local charity quilt auction, but since I've been so busy the last year I haven't been quilting since the last quilt auction. :rotfl:
So, I was thinking I love the puff quilt throw I did and so does everyone else. The puffs were so time consuming to make it almost drove me over the edge!:scared1: I've come up with an idea for a fast pieced puff (biscuit) quilt. Basically have 7 1/2 x 9 inch pieces of fabric for the top of the biscuit and 7 1/2 x 7 1/2 inch muslin for the bottom. Then if I pin 1/2 inch pleats on the 9 inch sides, I'm thinking I can chain pieces them all with a basting stitch (ala quilt in day) on 3 sides, stuff them by rows and close them up with another basting stitch then sew them together. Finish off with fabric on the bottom and quilt between the puffs.
Anyone else see a really quick method for puff quilts? Think this will work?

Ok, I finally saw a few pictures of puff quilts to know what you are talking about. They do look really cute.

One site said for beginners to simply use larger squares. This way, they make less squares overall & aren't overwhelmed. Since you are pressed for time, you might try that. Down quilts seem to use really big squares for the down. I don't see why you can't do the same. :)

Thanks for responding. They are really cute quilts - so inviting looking. I'm trying out my experimental method and so far it's working! I think I'll be able to finish the quilt in a few more days. The only problem I really foresee is quilting it since it'll be hard to squish all of that in my sewing machine, but I can always hand quilt it since I'm just going to quilt down the verticals.

I'm about half way done - my main problem is that the dogs are finding it irresistable to sit on.

It looks really great! :thumbsup2
I thought you were going to pleat only in one direction? Did it not work out that way? I think I see 4-way pleats.
As for the dogs, they are testing out all the stitching for you. You want to make sure it all holds together. :) ;)

Yep there's only pleats on two of the four side of each puff. 9 inch by 7 1/2 inch fabric on top of 7 1/2 x 7 1/2 inch muslin, then I'll put a fabric backing on there. I do wish I had alternated the pleats though because sewing through that much fabric (when the pleats match up) broke a ton of needles and I've been sewing the rows togther by hand. So that's about 1/2 inch pleat on 2 sides of each puff.
I pinned the fabric on the muslin before sewing which is mindless enough that I do it while on conference calls for work (I work for a company out east from home). My 11 year old niece has been helping me with the pinning as well. She went from oh don't make me do this to well this is kind of fun in about 10 minutes. :)

The dogs are still continuing to test the stitching. :) You can just see them thinking "ooh puffy". I'll have to do a little one for them to lay on sometime.

WOW! That's a gorgeous piece! Let us know how much it goes for...I'm sure it'll be a lot. :)

It went for $400 which is less than my quilts usually do. I think it's because it's different than the typical quilts in the auction.
Quilt between the puffs just means that I did a stitch in the ditch (just a running stitch) by hand cause there's no way that would fit in my sewing machine!! :rotfl:

Well, the weather's getting nice too. If the auction was during a snow storm with a blistering wind chill, :cold: someone would have been running out the door with the quilt wrapped around them. :teeth:

Yeah, it was hanging too and not on a bed, I think on a bed it looks soooo tempting.

Here's the quilt I did last year for the auction, I think it was $700. It's reversible, the other side is the same pattern but red where the blue is:

Here's the year before that, can't remember how much it was.

Here's a bear I made a couple of nights ago from scraps from making Christmas stockings a few years ago. First time I made a bear, that was fun.

You are so talented!!!! I can't believe you made them reversible, I love all of them.

Thanks! Actually the reversible part makes it easier to quilt in a standard sized sewing machine because you quilt them in pieces and then join the pieces together after it's quilted. I've been doing most of the big quilts I make that way since I learned how. Not that I've been doing many, last year or so I was so busy at work the the quilt for the auction was the only one I made.
Your biscuit quilt is gorgeous!
I used to make baskets with a similar technique. May do it again some day--it I ever find the time!
