I will try to help you out, but I am sure there are many great suggestions that others can offer also.
DH and I stayed at the All Star Sports in September 2001. It was our first time staying on a Disney property and we will do this again!
Let me say that All Start Sports is our favorite of the three All Star resorts, though I think most people prefer the Movie one.
Here's our reasoning. All Star Sports is the first to be picked up on Disney transportation in the mornings and throughout the day as well as the first stop of the three All Star resorts to be dropped off each run. What this meant to us, is that we always had a seat on the bus and when the bus filled up to capacity, it did not even bother stopping at the Music or Movies resort. This worked out great for us. No additional parking costs at the parks, b/c we used the Disney transportation everywhere!
Secondly, this is a nice property. We were fortunate and had a great rate of $49.00, but even at $75 or so it is worth the experience to be on a Disney property, have access to the Disney operators for ease in priority seating arrangements, etc.
The rooms are about the size of let's say a Best Western/Comfort Inn/Days Inn/La Quinta, all which are also nice, but this one puts you on the property. You can easily return to the room during the day for a swim, clothing change or a nap.
You can also get packages returned to the hotel as well, if you shop in the parks.
When we normally stayed in Kissimmee on 92 or on I-Drive, we paid a bit less, maybe $35 or $50 depending on the time of year, but that was prior to me finding this board and knowing a bit more about how to have a cost effective trip and still be on a Disney property.
Okay, the amenites--soap bar provided at the vanity. There is a dispenser in the full bath for shampoo and liquid soap. The camode and bath are in a separate room from the vanity, which is great if you are trying to put your makeup on and you have someone fogging up the bathroom. Also had Disney channel on TV!
The buildings are sports themed, which DH loved and he wanted the Baseball building and got it. There are two pools. The baseball diamond shaped pool is the quieter of the two pools as it is a little walk (maybe like five city blocks) from the front desk building, which has the other pool outside it. This one is definitely where the action is. Much activity there all day and into the evening.
There is an outside bar right near the pool so parents can enjoy themselves, while the kid's are swimming or getting a temporary tatoo painted on their faces. I think there was also someone doing charicatures there as well. There is a little stand also for purchasing some swimming accessories.
Inside the front desk building, you check in. There's a pressed penny machine (dh loved this) and a Disney store also. They had lots of things in there and a definite temptation when you first arrive. Had to pull DH out. There's a waiting area for kid's I guess to watch a Disney show while parents are standing in line. A good distraction b/c the lines can get long. We checked in at 11 pm and I tell ya it felt like the world decided to check in at that moment.
There's also a food court in this building so that you can get a quick meal on your way to or from the park. Average price for a entree is about $5.00. But certainly less costly than eating in the character meals and easier than getting in the car to drive and go somewhere. We had a chicken finger entree and it was pretty good! DH got coffee here in the mornings. They also have this mug program where you purchase the plastic mug for a price and you can fill it up with soda for the remainder of your trip all day every day I believe at no further cost to you. You can also use the same mug on future trips too at no cost for the soda (someone correct this if I am mistaken).
Outside the front desk building are the transportation pickup and drop offs for the various parks. There's also a pin cart so that you can purchase your pins right away.
Here is a website (this might be removed if it is inappropriate to post this url -not my site) with picture of the All Star Resorts:

I hope this helps you with your concerns. Hope you have a great time!!!
