I can top that! We were driving to the fort with our 91 Komfort fifth wheel and just before we got over the florida line we notice that the cab over part of the f'er was really bouncing. we stopped and found out that the floor was
separating from the walls on one side. Apparently there was a leak in the wall we couldnt see and it rotted the wood and the wall came apart from the floor. you could stick your entire arm into the corner.. luckly we stopped at Lowes and bought wood and hubby fixed it so it would make it home!

Well not the biggest mishap but pulling out of our site leaving the fort the kids across from us were on big wheels and my dh was watching for them and didn't see the tree branch hanging over and ripped a hole in our awning. :sad2:

Several years ago and a couple of campers ago, too, I got some bad gas in my tow vehicle in Florida. By the time we hit FW, the thing sounded like a steam locomotive. My wife was totally embarrassed when we checked in. I dropped the trailer off, left everybody to go to the Meadows, and I chugged over to the gas station and got a bunch of dry gas and filled up with premium and the problem disappeared.

On a trip with just my DD and myself, I asked my DD to watch and not let me hit the water supply while I was backing into our site. She was doing a great job of that but for some reason I decided to stop and take a look for my self. When I got to the back of the camper I saw I had stopped just before hitting the picnic table on the opposite side of the camper. I could not have stopped any closer without hitting the table! I tried to put a dime between the table and the bumper of the camper and it would not fit!

Two flat tires on the way to FW. Right rear in WV. It took out the wheel well panel above the tires and the lower side panel behind the wheels. That evening DH spent an hour pounding out the wrinkled mess so he could reattach it with a screw gun until we got home and could order new parts. Two days later, we are on I-4, 5 miles from Disney when the exact same tire ( not exact same....a new tire, but same right rear) blew. You'd be amazed how fast people get out of your way when chunks of rubber are bouncing down the highway going 60+mph. I think that was the fastest we have ever moved over 3 lanes and off into the grass! You'd think, things couldnt get worse, right? Wrong!!!! Guess who hadn't bought another spare tire yet?!? So, what do we do? Husband pulls out the original bad tire----it is still holding air, but has all the rubber tread pealed off. Once its back on the 5er we slowly move with the emergency flashers going to the next exit. Luckily its rt 535 and we are familiar with the area. We pull into the first parking lot we can fit into; drop the 5er....go into the store, explain to the manager that we are leaving our Rv in his parking lot while we go look for a replacement tire. Luckily we were able to find what we needed at Sam's. We bought 2 tires. LESSON LEARNED. Buy replacement tire immediately. Two hrs later we are finally set up at the fort and husband is looking through the cabinet (which happens to be directly over the tire(s) that blew) and he finds my stash of 10 cases of diet mt dew. Well, let me just say that there was another explosion, blow out, outbust when he saw how much weight I had on that tire area. I still don't take responsibility for the 2 bad tires. I think its Disneys fault for only selling Coke products.:lmao: Ohh ....husband spent 2 hrs that night, pounding out the same panel---by this time it looked like white tin foil all crumbled up. All is good---we are at Disney!

Like I posted earlier, I had my first flat on the tt on the way to FW last week. It really is amazing how much room everyone gives you when that happens isn't it!!!
I did go and get my tire replaced right away. My Dad ALWAYS carried 2 spares in the trunk of his car. He said if we had a flat, that would leave us with no spare. So I took time out from the Fort to get it done before the trip home.
As far as the cases of Diet Dew, it was DIET, how heavy could it really be!!!

I would love to do a poll on how many people have had a flat tire either going or coming from FW, we also had a flat 1 hour after leaving , it was pretty scary , I was glad it was on the way home though.

Always good to have 2 spares, we had a blowout on the way to the Atlanta race one year, changed the tire and started looking for a spare before moving on, could not find one anywhere in town. So I always try to have 2 spares for the trailer.

We had a tire lose its tread on the way to the fort, did not know until a passing motorist started pointing and waving, it still held air and we were close to 192 so we just took it easy until we got to camping world for a replacement.

I use to have embarrassing moments but since we started towing the fifthwheel everywhere, the toilet is always close. The store clerk use to ask who I was buying the Depends for? I would say they were for my astronaut wife.
They actually make great piddle pads for the dogs while in the camper. Just be sure you turn on the lights before walking across the floor. Once used, they become like flypaper when stepped on.

We had a Flat on the motorhome on the way down to FW in Sept 07. Didn't know it till I saw the emergency lights of the Georgia State Trooper pulling us over. "Did you know you have a flat tire?" wanting to say something smart about going 70mph with a flat and 5 kids inside, I chose "no sir" and began looking... Driver's side rear, out side tire. He wrote me a warning for getting a flat tire! Waited 4hrs for roadside service.:headache:
On the way home we blew the inside tire on the driver side rear. Just before leaving Florida on 95. I was not paying or waiting for roadside service on that one. Changing a tire at 10pm on the side of 95 was NO fun!

Okay, this didn't happen upon our arrival, but two days later. I walk the dog at about 6:00am, and then we plan to get ready for a day at Magic Kingdom. As I go to let her into the rv, she snags the skin of her hind leg on the screen door, and screams (yes, screams) so loud half our loop wakes up and rushes outside. I shudder, take a look, and her skin is ripped half way down the side of her leg. My husband throws a towel on this bloody mess and carries her into the rv, while I try to find a Disney number in one of our Disney books. I get directions to a vet, who luckily for us, turns out to be wonderful. More than two hundred stitches later (and $1200 later), she is sewn up, and my heart palpitations finally cease.
Needless to say, we filed that ______(substitute a swear word here) screen door point down.

I got ticketed for not wearing a seatbelt in the passenger seat....less than 10 minutes away from the fort....wife got one for doing 70 in a 65 at the same time!!! But I guess thats better than flat tires on TTs.
Years ago, on one of our very first family trips to Disney, we couldnt even dream of affording to stay on property, we checked into a Motel 6 somewhere on I.Bronson, I believe...and there was a huge hole in the wall with a perfect view to the next room, there was a very large naked man sleeping uncovered in the bed......we didnt ask for another room...just got a refund and moved to the next dump we could afford without a custom view.

I've never understood that knowing how many people bring animals and kids in rv's why the bottom of the door has that sharp edge. It's obvious the top one is rounded so as not to cut the awning so why not make it round at the bottom too to keep from slicing somebody.
My worst thing coming to the fort was the capture plate on my 5th wheel hitch breaking twice on the way down hitting my tailgate and bending it to hell and back. I think I finally got that problem solved but I still take the tailgate off when I tow and put it on when we get to the destination. I know if I leave it on it will break again and dent what I had fixed.

Yo Rog, the red flag should've went up when they required payment for the room by the hour.
Wife and I once visited the MK back in 76. Stayed at what was the Holiday Inn out by the interstate on 192. Last time we was there, we drove back out there and dang the place was a dump. Of course it wasn't a Holiday Inn anymore. Back then, wasn't much of Kississimee to see.

We had a flat at the Fort Too. We found it as we were pulling out of our site at the end of our vacation. We put on the spare and looked for a place to repair the other tire, but no luck on a Saturday morning. Thankfully we made it home with no other issues. Now DH carries a tire repair kit with us when travelling.

I was LOL on the soda thing. We had a flat several years ago on the way down. DH blamed it on all the soda we had packed. The worst was a couple of years ago. We were on our way home and a flying tire piece hit us and took out a few lights, one jack and put a big hole in the front of the camper. We looked like hillbilly campers with all the duct tape on the camper the rest of the way home.

Sounds like our first road trip to WDW in the mid 90's when our first was about 3yo. We took the family minivan down and were driving through the night while he slept. Somewhere just south of the GA/FL border we needed gas and stopped at a 24hr location right off the highway. The whole time I was pumping I could smell gas, and only realized belatedly that they must have had leaking underground tanks (place was in a wetland, with the water very close by). We made it to Daytona Beach and watched the sunrise over the water. A couple of hours later when we went to leave, the van would not start. There must have been enough water to separate out to the bottom of the tank. The only way to get it moving was for me to jump up and down on the back bumper of the MV while DW cranked the engine. We must have looked pretty ridiculous, but it worked.

My DS put a hole in his leg with the screen door. I think that was easier to handle then if it had been my dog!
Nothing can stop our fort trips. We had purchased a new RV and on our first trip with it to the fort, the engine block had a crack. We broke down in NC. Luckily we got to a service station. Me , my 2 babies, 2 BIG dogs and 2 cats are all sitting on the couch while the guy has to lift the bed to get to the engine. We ended up having to get it to an authorized repair shop for the warranty but we had our il's come get us in their RV, offloaded and continued on our way to the fort. That mishap taught us to tow a car.
One Christmas we get our site all set up. Go to take a shower and the pipes break. Water everywhere. That was okay because we used the comfort station for the trip. DH has been extra careful with the winterizing ever since.
Of course there are the trips that I forget to pack a key item, like everyones underwear or bathing suits or the pets prescription food.
We were a young family back then, as I get older I find i'm less adaptable to mishaps and must resist my first instinct to just go home.

Flat tire here too! At the fort for 10 days, not a problem. The day of our departure we decided to check out and drive the TT over to the MK parking lot and do a few more hours as we still had a day on our MYW tickets. I must have walked around the TT a dozon times packing up, unhooking sewer etc. and never noticed a problem. We then drove out of the fort and to MK's parking lot. Got parked and the kid parking cars says "you got a flat tire." Sure enough the left rear on the TT is completely flat. It had a sliver of wood between the tread and right through the tire. I send the wife and kids to the park and start changing this tire in the 95 degree heat, in the sun, in the middle of 100 acres of blacktop with every d**n person going to the MK walking by and making a smart a** comment! :headache: I didn't have a jack in the trailer so after several cuss words and a gallon of sweat I employed the redneck trailer jack (dragging the good wheel up onto a block to pick the bad one up) and got it changed.

I feel for you there Elliott. I would've driven it to the Hess or AAA Center where you would've had some shade. I have one of those tire jacks myself even though I haven't needed it I wouldn't want to not have it. I have a spare from another trailer that is just like my campers that is just sitting in the garage. After reading all this I'm putting it on the list to bring from now on.

We got a flat on the van pulling a pop up at 1 in the morning in Atlanta. The neighborhood didn't look exactly terrific, especially at that time of night. I was in such a hurry to get out of there I didn't even unhook the camper. Just jacked up the van and changed the tire. Thank God the tire was one that hung on the outside back of the van. To top it off, it seemed like everyone (all women of course) had to go to the bathroom too and NOTHING was opened near there. I felt like a Nascar pit crew changing that tire so fast. :scared1: Didn't stop anywhere to replace the tire until we hit the Fort and went out and bought a new one right away.

That's how we got into trouble when the second tire blew. We were gonna wait till we got to FW, unhook the 5er and go find another spare. I'm seriously thinking that taking 2 spares is the way to go.

I have a floor jack, but it didn't have the umph to lift the weight of the TT all by itself. So I ran the good wheel up on some blocks, and then easily jacked up the axle with the flat:thumbsup2. Redneck or whatever, I think it is much safer than putting all that weight on the jack.

last summer, i stupidly decided that we would combine our two trips into one...we blew a tire in ga on our way to tn and didn't have a spare...the state trooper had to take dh to the tire dealership to get another one...that took most of the day...then we get to disney a night early because my parents are staying in the cabins for the weekend, we park the rv and golfcart trailer in the overflow parking lot and instantly get accosted by the disney police saying you can't park here yada yada yada. he waited until my parents came and got us and took us back to the cabins..we had to go and get the cart later...
in the morning, when we were supposed to be checking in, we see this monster huge puddle of antifreeze in the overflow parking lot...needless to say, it was from us and the radiator let go after it cooled down overnight...after many conversations with the mechanic over our week stay, we got it home (thank goodness it is only 1 hr 45 min away) and paid the 2300 dollar bill to get a new one built...
i am hoping our trip this summer goes more smoothly

Before our trip down in June 07 I had debated with myself about replacing the 4 year old tires on my fiver before the trip. Well I decided against it and yup, you guessed it, one of 'em blew out. I wasn't even 30 minutes from home yet. It was still really early so I figured I'd keep going and look for a tire shop further down the road. We got to Mississippi and by then I figured that the other tires were going to hold out. I hadn't bought replacement for the spare yet either. About half way through Mississippi the other road side tire goes on the trailer. This time I have to drop the trailer in the only place around for miles and go looking for replacement tires. I back track bout 15 miles get the 2 bad tires replaced, go back to the trailer and mount the 2 new tires then pull the trailer back to the shop to get the tires on the other side replaced. That wasn't to be the end of our problems for that trip though. It was the second or third day of our stay at FW when one of them sudden summer T-storms decides to blow through. The rest of the family went back to the trailer and I went up to the Outpost to check on an internet kit. I ended up waiting under the bus stop awning at the Outpost for about 20 min for a wicked storm to blow through. Several lighting strikes within 50 yards of the bus stop, hail and rain blowing 50mph. Once everything calmed down I made it dripping wet into the Outpost and they had and internet kit so it wasn't a wasted trip. I get back to the trailer and discovered that I did not leave enough slope in my awning to let the rain run off. The roller tube buckled about the middle of the awning due the weight of the water. It took about an hour to get the blasted thing off the trailer and stowed. The rest of the trip was pretty enjoyable with no more mishaps. The drive home was a bit exciting as we drove through a line of severe T-storms almost the entire length of I-10 through LA. Not at all fun being on that d**n bridge in the wind rain and hail. We made it home safe and sound though. I did discover a few months ago that the kid that replaced the 2nd 2 tires on my trailer in MS didn't replace the valve stems and one of the old stems had partially blown out causing the tire to go flat.

DW drove the roof of the golf cart into the arm of the awing a couple days before we left, and didn't tell me. She just "twisted it back into place. Well we go to leave in the am and I am trying to get it to roll up, well I can't even get the arm to slide down over the other, I am cussin and swearin, and DW asks whats wrong. Then when I tell her, she says, oh I caught that with the roof of the GC, you don't think I hurt it do you?..... well after some more cussin and swearin, I get it down and try to roll it up, well when it gets to the top, it is about 3" from being lined up so one are goes into the other. More cussin, roll it down, roll it back up pulling to side as I go, still doesn't line up.... do it again, still no go. Well I am trying to figure out what to do now, when I look at the fabric in the groove on the roll, it is all the way down at one end..... I ask DW " just how hard did you hit it?" she says "I just tapped it" yeah right.... well slide fabric to center, and got it all up and sorta smashed together, put my screw on zip tie thing on that I always use after last awning mishap in oh (ripped off side of old camper going down rt 80 in about 75 mph crosswind and torrential storm).
Needless to say, when it warms up before next trip, I have some work to do.

Our worst mishap was back in October. First our truck broke down on the way to he fort. DH had to replace the altenator(sp?) in the parking lot of an action auto. We figured worst was over and we were back on the road. The day after we arrive at the fort our grey water tank falls off. Thank god for the company that does onsite repairs. They couldn't fix it the right way without having it in the shop, but kinda rigged it to get us by. When we purchased the trailer (used) we also purchased a warrenty. Good thing it covered everything!

I think the worst mishap I have ever had was a night in our fiver we just picked up for some service/warranty work. Some of this work entailed a leaking toilet. Now we stayed overnight at Tropical Palms the night before as the dealer is 4.5 hours away so we made a little weekend out of it. We did not hook up the sewer as we would be staying at Tropical Palms again on the way back from picking up the trailer and would take care of the dumping at that time. Well, apparently, they opened the dump valve to test the toilet after they fixed it and forgot to close it. I take the cap of the connection and am delightfully showered with Smurf Goo.:scared1: Being somewhat confused :confused3 and dazed by this it takes me a minute to get my senses back. I then yell, well actually I screamed for the wife to close the valve while at the same time I am trying to cram the cap back on squirting Smurf Goo every where. Now there are 3 different dump valves. One for the black tank, one for the master suite bath and shower and one for the kitchen sink. She has no clue which is what and where. This is all happening with our neighbors watching next to us. A little embarassing. I tried to convince them that I was not that green (I was actually blue at the time) at RVing but I myself would have had a hard time believing that statement. Well, the dealer got a whale of #@!& from me at the least:mad: but I lived to camp again another day. The moral of this story is make sure your wife knows how to close a dump valve!!!

here is what you need for those flat tires http://www.smartjak.ca/
Looks like the ramps that I have my old rusty Nova up on out front here in the trailer park. (Just an attempt at a little more redneck humor). That does look good. Wouldn't take up anymore room than the 2x6's I carry now. And if it will keep me from ever having another flat, well there ya go.

Ok, About 6 hours into our 20 hour trip from phila to FW, I hear a noise that sounds like I'm running over a rumble strip, except I'm in the center of the lane....2 seconds later, the front end dips on the drivers side and sparks are a flyin'. :scared1: Seems you should always repack your bearings at 50,000 miles. I just bought the Winnebago 2 months prior and this was our first trip ever in an RV.
I can honestly say it's very exciting when your entire wheel decides to part ways with your RV at 65mph. Luckily I watched a video about how to react when you have a blowout...although my tire was fully inflated. What happened was the bearings heated up so much, they welded themselves to the axle(the rumble noise I heard), then spun the axle right off, and the tire assembly wedged itself inside the wheel well.
Spent the next 2 nights at a truckstop repair station, but still nervously continued our trip, and now I have a great paper weight(the last 2 inches of my axle with the bearings welded on) to remember the fun times.

Hmmm, I'm surprised about all the tales of flat tires. The tires on my first trailer 81 prowler lasted a good 40K miles and in the late 1980's had two start to go bad in Alabama and put on some car tires (all I could find in Bessemar Alabama on a Sat.) that lasted another almost 5 or 6 years and finally just decided to replace them and got 4 bias bly "towmasters" and one developed a bubble on our first 250 mile trip to Penn State and replaced them with the Goodyear Marathons back around 1996. Have had great luck with the GY tires so since 1981 towing I have only had two actual flats one on the trailer back in the late 1980's and one on our Van in 2004 in Texas. I generally only carry one spare trailer tire, but when we went out west I did take a spare TT tire I had unmounted since we would be gone for over two months and traveling over 10,000 miles.
The only inconvenient issues I have had in 30 years and several cross country trips were two broken TT springs, both of which happened around Washingtion Pa and got the springs in Wheeling WV. On the first problem I had the place in Wheeling make me two springs one for the broken one and one for a spare and after the second one I got a stock spring from my local RV dealer. I can change out a spring on a TT in around 2 hours.
One thing to remember is that TT tires especially the ST rated ones are only good for up to around 65mph and a lot of folks are going 70 to 75 for hours on end and than can and well cause premature tire failure. That's why I always cruise at just under 60 which also puts me in the best mpg for my 7.3L diesel.

Larry, I have seen you post about Penn st a couple of times, when were you there, I was at state college between 88 and 91. As far as the broken spring near washington pa, I can probably see the huge hump/dip/hump that used to be in the road that killed it for ya!! :thumbsup2 I have hit it a few times myself.

Just because something is safe doesn't mean it isn't redneckish!:snooty:
LOL!!
Two things on the to-do list before our October trip: Get a second spare, and practice changing the trailer tires, using a jack and/or ramps.
And.... put a flat tire repair kit in the trailer!

I would love a class C or A but stories like this are what will probably never let me pull that trigger. Right now if something happens to my tow vehicle the worst that can happen is I go to the nearest dealer, throw the keys at them and say "get me another one!", put the TT behind the it and we are on our way.

ahh, traveling in the summer passing all those fresh fruit stands along the way on I 95. Well our daughter who was 5 at the time ate a bunch of blue berries...she was restless during the night...we were camping at Point South..well we wake her up about 7 am to head to FW and low and behold she is covered with hives and swelling....a trip to a small hospital in Ridgeland then...Everything turns out okay...we had to keep her "out of the sun" a few days....memories...

reading about all these things that can happen, i can't help but wonder, does anyone belong to Good Sam Emergency Road Service or something similar? What has been your experience in using these. i belong to the good sam but, thankfully, have never had to use them.
I most definitely belong to Good Sam Roadside. My truck spare and my camper spare are underneath, and crawling around on my back to change heavy tires is not my idea of fun. Yeah, I may wait a few hours on the side of the road for a tow or a fix, but beats hurting myself trying to change a tire.
