Did anyone go to the NY worlds fair, 1963-1964? I grew up in Queens and went about 15 times. I was in a stroller but have vivid memories. Especialy the Disney pavillions. Probably part of my Disney lure that made me a DVC member. I remember great moments with MR. Lincoln. Now Hall of Presidents. He scared me as a kid. The Dinosauar exhibit which still has its remnants along the train ride route in Disneyland. I am not sure what the draw was to me as a todler but I loved the Carousel of progress, (yes they played the same song back then). And of course my all time favorite Its a small world. The ride was moved to Disneyland and of course still stands. Does anyone else remember seeing these attractions?

Yes, I did! I was in high school in Bayonne NJ! I loved Mr. Lincoln, It's a Small World and the Carousel of Progress. I'm pretty sure I went to the World's Fair at least twice, I remember being with my Dad, we both loved the Disney pavillion.
I also remember a Morman presentation, I had no idea about that particular religion and it fascinated me.
I remember the World's Fair whenever I go into the Carousel of Progress, and I was so sad when it so sorely needed repair at WDW. I think it's better now, it didn't break down when we were there last.

What a coincidence! I was also in high school in Bayonne, NJ. My first visit was with HFA and the second trip was with my family. I think about it every time I go on Small World and The Carousel of Progress. I also remember the cars in the GM pavilion and most especially the Pieta. As I always say it is a Small World. Marie

I visited on my class trip from my high school in Minnesota. I wish that I could say I remember those things but I don't. All I remember is getting lost on the subway and some kind NYer taking pity on a kid from the hicks and taking me to my correct stop.

I forgot about the PIETA, but I do remember seeing it. It was in a dimly lit room amd I remember it being very quiet, with the feeling of being in church. Some religious nut took a hammer to her I believe in the 1970's.

I broke down on the carousel of progress and it turned out to be pretty cool. We had to exit through an emergency exit and got a good behind the scenes look at where they set up for parades. A cast member walked us to a fence and we reentered the park.

i think it was that first time on IASW there that sparked my love of disney :cloud9: <sigh>
btw, i have a few "souveniers" from the WF. every so often i'll try finding out their monetary worth, but can't find anything close (i use e-bay & google).
not that i would ever sell them (or sadly, the many, many other mementos i've saved from those years).
my kids are going to have some interesting times when i die :)

I was there, but all I remember was my afternoon/evening - since we saw the Beatles in Shea Stadium on the same day we went to the fair. I thought that was a pretty good day for a 14 yr old girl from a small farm town in Illinois. It's the only World's Fair I have ever seen. Plus I saw Herman's Hermits two days before at Steel Pier.

Now, I was going to say that I went with Holy Family, maybe even with the orchestra, but I just am too hazy about that detail!!! I remember going up to Seton Hall with the orchestra, but maybe the Worlds Fair too!
Oh yes, how could I forget the Pieta. We waited in line many times to go past it on the moving walkway! Thank you!! I'm class of '64.

My parents brought me to the World's Fair in 1964. They said that I cried all the way through IASW. I was only a little over a year old at the time. 8 years later, when we went to WDW for the first time, we went on IASW again and I told my mother that I felt like I had been on this ride before-that something seemed familiar about it to me. I guess I just got bit by the Disney bug early in life.

My DH did. He was a young child living in PA at the time. His whole family went to the fair so he has lots of good memories. Similar to you, he loves Small World and Carousel of Progress because he remembers seeing them in NY.

Another Bayonne person here. :) I went with St. Henry's. I think they took most of the school to see the Pieta. Later, my sister and I went with my Dad. I remember being so excited to see the things we were shown on the Wonderful World of Disney in person. :cool1: Lincoln was so awesome. And I too still love small world since it was the first disney ride I ever was on.

Yes, I was there...also in a stroller. (And yes, bwvBound, they were little cars!) That is one of my earliest memories. I mostly remember the stroller, and for some reason, the Pieta...it was in a dark room and you went by on a moving walkway. [The moving walkway might be a good idea at St. Peter's now - I was there last spring, and you could not get anywhere close to the Pieta - of course, it was Easter Saturday. Gridlock just like a Saturday at the Magic Kingdom during peak visiting times!]

It was actually the 1964-1965 World's Fair, not 63-64. I went both years and I remember really liking It's a Small World.

Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln is still an attraction at Disneyland. And part of the Ford Magic Skyway (the primeval world section) can be seen while riding the Disneyland Railroad.

We went as a family! I remember my sister and I being so excited and then when we got there so mad. We had to wait to do everything because our little sister was just sooooooooo, well little!
Like PP, I specifically remember IASW and the GM building. I also remember waiting in an extremely long line to see the Pieta. Even as a little kid I was simply amazed that someone would have not only the talent, but the patience, to carve something so beautiful!
I also remember Kodak and Polaroid.
Oh.....and the looooong ride home in the dark! We had driven up and back in the same day (not really a huge deal from Philly, except back in the day there was no I-95). I had never been allowed to stay up that late before. Was one of the trip highlights.

I went to the New York World's Fair 3 times. It's a good thing I went more than once-the first time I went with my best friend, and as giggling 13 year-olds who were boy-crazy, we spent the entire day hanging around at the Boy Scout lost child place, eyeing cute boy scouts. I remember on subsequent trips loving the Belgian Waffles (and IASW).

I went with my family to the Fair as part of a cross-country vacation. I remember other parts of the trip, but not the Fair. My Mom tells me that we didn't see any of the Disney exhibits, because the lines were really long. She figured that we could see them when they got to Disneyland. At the time, we lived in CA, about 3 hours from DL. I tease my mother now because Small World is her absolute favorite ride and this is probably the only time ever that she has passed up an opportuity to ride it! -- Suzanne

Yep, we were there. I was just 14 at the time, but I remember it very clearly. We only went to the fair one day and then spent the other day site seeing NY. The attraction I have the most memory of was the GM exhibit and also the Belgian Waffles. I wonder why we don't have World's Fairs anymore?

Bobbi, I was the class of '65 and was briefly in the orchestra. I tried my hand at drums. The problem was that I couldn't read music. It was usually hard to quit the orchestra but I had no problem quitting. Oh well! Thanks everyone for the memories. Marie

How about the "memories" of there being an HFA, funding problems, school closing?
I tried very hard to play the violin, with very limited success.
I hope to see you around sometime, Marie. We get to VB on June 22nd.

My husband was one of those Boy Scouts although he never did the lost child thing. He was there for several weeks one summer. They were housed in army barracks somewhere and bussed to the Fair each day. Different assignments every day.

I was there as a 10 year old and remember all those things. My Dad and I went there for a day and then did the NYC tour. At the time we lived in Glens Falls, NY ( now called Queensbury ). But none of you mentioned the tire ferris wheel! The Uniroyal ferris wheel now sit next to I-94 just east of Detroit about 80 miles from where I live now.

I went to the 1964 World's Fair with a tour group from Indiana. I have a picture taken outside the globe similar to Spaceship Earth at WDW. I loved ISW and COP and everything there. I also went to the Expo in Montreal in 67.

We lived in Queens also and my Dad got off from Work at 3:30. He would pack us all in the station wagon and head over to the fair for dinner. It was wonderful. I remember the moving sidewalks and the Clairol building the most. You would have to put your head inside these little pods and could view yourself with different hairdos. I was so little my dad had to pick me up to see inside. Do you remember the large building with the map of NY, They turned that into a roller rink after the fair closed.

I am glad someone else remembered the Clairol exhibit. I was 14 & wanted to see it. You had to be 18 to go w/o a parent. I finally got my DM to go through the line w/me. I so wanted to dye my hair!:goodvibes As best I remember all the hair-do's were sooooooooo 1960's, big hair w/a flip on the ends!
I loved Mr. Lincoln. Seeing of footage of the show still gives my goosebumps. My DH & I still go to the Carousel every visit to WDW.
Being from a small town in NE TX, this was the trip of a lifetime. We rode the train up & back. Stayed in a downtown NYC hotel, above Grand Centeral Station & rode the subway out to the fair.
It was a grand time.

I lived in NJ and we'd go on Sundays when it rained...less people. I remember having to pay to see It's Small World I think maybe $2.50. My Father thought it was an outrageous amount but my Mom said we had to do it. Dupont with rain raining on the stage. Steve and Edie performing for free!! The water shortage, no water given in restaurants unless you asked for it and pavilions that were to be surrounded with water dry and growing weeds in the moat. I was 10-11 and absolutely loved going. I also remember the Ford pavilion and hoping that we'd get to ride in a Mustang. Great memories.

I was also at the NY World's Fair. My father was kind of a World's Fair junkie -- we went to the Seattle World's Fair in 1962, the NY World's Fair in 1964 and Expo '67 in Montreal. We drove to each of them from the Chicago area.
I also have wondered why we no longer have World's Fairs....
My greatest memory is the Pieta. To this day, I get goosebumps when I even think about how moving that was.
In about 1993, after Carousel of Progress reopened after refurbishment, I went on it with DH and the kids. I suddenly realized that I had seen it almost 30 years earlier. What a strange sensation! It is one attraction that I absolutely must do every trip to the Magic Kingdom.
I also have to take a picture of the entrance to Carousel of Progress, with the year on it -- I'm always afraid that the next time I go, it won't be there. :sad2:

I'd forgotten about the Pieta. We're not Catholic, and we thought it was so funny to see so many women in there with dollar bills pinned to their heads so that, in the Catholic tradition, their heads were covered. Not very tolerant of me, but 13 year old girls giggle at all kinds of things. The Pieta itself was lovely, we didn't giggle at that.

DH & I also grew up in Queens. I only went twice but DH must have gone 100 times over the two years. Thanks for the memory of the Clairol building. I loved to look at the hairstyles. I remember the Sinclair dinosaur, the Chinese acrobats, and It's a Small World. I even got a little doll of an Indian princess. Maybe that's why I have to go on that ride in WDW everytime I go! The Carousel of Progress was also one of my favorites, then and now. The Pieta was incredible. We saw it again in St. Peter's when we went on the Disney Med cruise. Hard to believe we had seen it 44 yrs. earlier in Queens.........

Did anyone see the guy flying around in the jet pack. When you are 4 and see that, he may as well have been the man from the moon. Also how about the dolphin show. The best part was the end of the show. It was sponsored by SUNKIST and at the end of the show the dolphins threw oranges into the stands. It was so exciting when one landed near me. Like a foulball at a baseball game.

We went in 1964.
My parents dropped my (four, at the time) twin brothers off at my grandparents, and took the three older kids; plus, my mom was pregnant with my youngest brother. To this day, the surviving twin complains about that!

I also was a little kid in a stroller who lived right there. I grew up in Woodhaven so we could be there in 10 mins. I can remember little snippets from the World's Fair, most especially the It's a Small World show and just loving the whole idea of being there. My parents and my grandparents took me twice. As I got older, we would revisit the park and of couse, Shea, and I would remember the moments from the Fair and ask my parents about them. Maybe my memories were embellished, but they are fun to think about now!

I was a young girl from Hackensack NJ who went to the World's Fair as a family outing - I remember the awe of IASW, Mr Lincoln, and other rides that still make me smile today - what a great start to my love of Disney.
And I do remember Freedomland - got to go there once with my dad and sister. And Palisades Park - used to cut school to go there on the cheap days - I think it was 10 cents to get in one day during the school week. Ahhh, the memories!

I went to the Worlds Fair in 1964. My aunt and uncle lived in Flushing at the time. I am sure my love of Disney was helped by those wonderful memories. Carosel of Progress, Small World and Mr Lincoln. The big deal for my grandparents was to see the Pieta. We were never able to go to Disneyland when I was a kid so the World's Fair was the closest thing to Disney until I was an adult and brought my own kids to WDW. I renembered the Carosel of Progress right away. Mt grandparents and aunt and uncle are long gone so thank you for tweaking those wonderful memories.

We enjoyed the Fair on several visits with Girl Scouts, church, and family. My fondest memory is performing with my dance studio at the New Jersey Pavilion. I also loved the huge tire ride.

I was 8 or 9 when I went to the NY Worlds Fair. I remember the subway ride from Penn Station to the Fairgrounds. My next memory was the transporters like the one's they have to take you from the Disney parking lots to the park (the horns played the Greyhound Bus theme).
I remember the It's a small world and Carousel of Progress.

I was 6 years old when I went to the World's Fair with my parents and sister. I remember IASW and the Carosel of Progress. I also remember the big globe that was the icon for the fair. I smile every time I watch the U.S. Open tennis tournament when they show it.
The only other thing I really remember is discovering while driving to Washington D.C. that I'd left my teddy bear in the motel room and crying for a long time. When we stopped for the night, my mom called the motel and they had found it and mailed it home to me. That teddy bear is now in my curio cabinet alongside many Disney items!

We went once but I was only 8 so I don't remember too much about it. I do have some movies that my father took. I also remember seeing the Pieta and the pavillion about nuclear energy and I got a radioactive dime. Looking back I think that is really dangerous.
I also remember IASW.
I grew up in CT and we went 3 or 4 times. I was young (2-3) but still remember IASW, the car ride, the Sinclair dinosaur and the tire ferris wheel - amazing what an impression it left! Have to admit that now that my daughter has to go on IASW at least once a day when we're at Disney I've had enough of it. When she wants to get my goat, she starts singing the song. I actually prefer the Christmas version at DL and go can handle that one more than once/day.
I remember Pallisades Park but we never went. We used to go to Rye Playland instead - it's still there but I haven't been in 40 years.

i went twice, when i was 7 (1964) and 8 (1965) - remember the GE Carousel of Progress, IASW by UNICEF, the convertibles in the Ford pavilion passing the dinosaurs, Abe Lincoln "talking", the Pieta, being afraid the huge GM sign was going to fall over onto me - many many memories....
also remember that 2 headed cow at palisades amusement park - and how badly that building smelled inside....
