And so I begin with the questions.....!
My baby boy is 10 months and although i'm happy to buy baby food when we get over there, I do want to take some of our own jars with us for the 1st day or so. Also I am going to take powdered milk sachets but also some ready made cartons in my suitcase. Is it true that i'll have to declare the food and milk somewhere? Will this make things take longer at the airport?
Also, do they have an equivelent of Hipp Organic over there? Is the baby food of a decent standard?
Thanks in advance....:)

Hi
Ive just come back and have been before bringing milk both times. I didnt declare that I had milk- and not aware that I needed to. If you want to be sure why not try the US embassy.
You cannot purchase SMA in the States so you can either try one of theirs or bring your feeds which is what I did- used the sachets and ready cartons and it worked out great- we practically had an empty suitcase to fill once we'd unpacked all his milk!!
Only other thing Id say is dont bring any milk with you to the airport before security, they'll just take it off you- buy it once you've been through security.
My son loved their baby jars the first time we went (7mths) We bought Gerber and Beechnut was also a massive hit- he particularly loved their pureed apple which I used to add to his porridge for breakfast.
One other little tip - Publix premium nappies and wipes are brill :-)
Have a great time
Hi,
I tried the first time we went to buy the baby food for DD, she wasn't that keen, found a few she was ok with and stuck to those, I guess it depends on your baby. I also found the choice very limited. The main brands are Gerber and Beechnut, their websites show you what is on offer.
I have never taken the ready made milk, only the pre-measured sachets of SMA. I have never had a problem on the UK side, they only ask you to taste the water in one of the bottles. On the US side coming home, they said I would have to make the milk up or I had to dispose of the sterile water. I disposed of the water and purchased some low sodium water after security so I could make up the milk on the flight.
The last few times I have taken a supply of Hipp Organic jars (no red meat products allowed, I called the US embassy). I just put them in bubble wrap throughout the case and on entering the US I declared the food on the customs declaration form. They asked me what I was carrying and types of food etc, xrayed the cases and that was it so it didn't take much longer.

The first time we went with dd she was 8 months. Took a full carton of dried formula milk from home as I didn't want rejection with another brand (left more room for shopping in the suitcase on the way home!!). I didn't declare it as it was in checked luggage.
Gerber baby food is great.
Even if the items are in checked baggage I think you are still supposed to declare it as it's food you are bringing into the country. Although in saying that I've taken weetabix and chocolate before and not declared it, but I did it when I took baby food as I did a bit more research on the USA embassy website.

If you've got a fussy babe, I would recommend taking you're normal formula in you're case. The tiny bit of weight is really not worth the worry if you're baby refuses to take any other brands-You could always check walmarts website if not to see what organic brands they offer:thumbsup2

We took ds2 last yr when he was 5mths, we took one of those powedered milk dispensers (from mothercare) which holds 3 feeds worth for on the plane- you are only allowed to take through secruity as much as will need for the flight over, this includes jarred food in carry on. Any opened food from on the plane has to be left on the plane as US customs dont let you take it through (have sniffer dogs)
We took a couple of boxes of Hipp Organic through in our checked in luggage( I was mixed feeding) we took a bit more than we thought we would need as there is no where to get this formula in the US. The baby food is pretty good from what i saw of it (ds2 was too young to need it that trip) they even have there own organic ranges they also do a variety of toddler biscuits, crisps etc (like the organix goodies range)
Security coming back through was very tight and would only allow me to bring two bottles with water through and had to chuck the other away luckily ds2 slept all the way back so wasnt needed but be aware you may need to get some hot water from one of the cafes the other side.
In case you were need ing ot know about stelization we took some of the Boots cold water disposable sterilizer bags, they were fantastic and hardly took up any room in the case.
hope all this has helped,

Thanks very much:goodvibes :goodvibes
He's not a fussy boy so I think he'll be ok with different food, really pleased to here that they do have an organic offering. I must keep reminding myself that it's USA i'm going to not a 3rd world country!!
Just going to take a few jars and SMA cartons in my checked luggage and I may play dumb and not delcare it...;)
