I love the Monorail! I made the comment to my DW that it still smelled the same as it did in the 70's. She said it smells like an old Band-aid. So now we lovingly call it riding old band-aid! Has anyone else noticed this?

Don't get me wrong I don't think it smells bad just kind of used and antiseptic mixed together.

Do you have a favorite color?

Do you have a great picture?

Do you have a great Old Band-Aid story?

One of the most famous symbols of Walt Disney World, the original Mark IV monorail was designed in California and assembled in Florida by the Martin Marietta Corporation. The new Mark VI monorails were built by Bombardier and the first of the twelve new trains (Monorail Blue) arrived to Disney property on June 8, 1989 and was installed shortly after. The Walt Disney World Resort is currently operating twelve Mark VI trains.

The modern trains that have been in use since 1989 are each 203 feet long (consisting of six cars) and can carry 360 passengers. The trains are driven by eight 113 HP motors which are powered by a 600-volt electrical system running through a third rail mounted to the side of the concrete beam.

We think it smells like hay or straw. Oddly enough, I have a Honda Odyssey and for some reason it smells exactly the same as the monorail when the ac or defroster runs first thing in the morning. Only problem is that my mechanic said the smell is from stale water sitting in the ventilation tubes !! Yuck !! MOLD!!

Boarding the monorail is when I realize I'm really at Magic Kingdom! When I was a kid, I could ride the monorail around and around...
Now that I go with my husband and son, I'm much more grown up (NOT!). ;) When the announcer gets to the "collect your belongings and watch your head and step" we all chorus, "Oww! My head!!" It's become a family tradition.

When I go in Sept, my friend and I are arriving around 4pm. Our plan of action is to check into our hotel, then drive over to the Poly for dinner and ride the monorail "loop" then transfer over at the TTC to see Epcot! we figure it's the best way to grab a peek at the "magic" before starting the next day!

The Monorail beams, which are made of concrete with a special polystyrene core to lighten their weight, came by train from Washington state.

Monorail cast members formerly referred to beams by their physical location rather than by the type of service offered by trains on the beam. This however was changed in order to facilitate one set of nomenclature for the system. The resort beam is the innermost beam of the two beams encircling the Seven Seas Lagoon. The trains operating the resort beam offer local service to the Magic Kingdom resorts. It was formerly known as the lagoon beam. The Express beam is the outermost beam circling the Seven Seas Lagoon and provides express service between the Transportation and Ticket Center and the Magic Kingdom. It was formerly known as the exterior beam. Finally, The Epcot beam connects the Transportation and Ticket Center with the Epcot theme park.

Riding the monorail is when my brain says to itself, "You have officially arrived at Walt Disney World." I fell for it back in the early 80's when I wasn't even in elementary school yet. Even though we lived in Orlando, my parents couldn't afford to take me and my sister to the parks very often. As a substitute, they'd take us to the airport and let us ride the monorail there. We'd look for gators below us and then watch planes coming and going. (Yeah, I had the best parents ever!) Ahhh, glorious memories! And the first time I got to copilot to MK was an evening in early December 2004. It was absolutely magical! I can hardly wait to ride the monorail again in a few weeks! Yay!

One cast member acts as Monorail Central. Central controls the operation of the entire monorail system, usually by issuing instructions to pilots via radio. Central is responsible for setting up each day's operation in the morning, for handling contingencies and emergencies that occur during the day, and for moving trains off the system after all parks have closed. A cast member can act as Central only with a history of safe train operation, the ability to train other monorail pilots, and a rigorous training period during which they must successfully triage and treat simultaneous simulated emergencies. Monorail Central operates out of the glass booth on the Epcot Load platform at the Transportation and Ticket Center.

Monorail Red set to debut at Disneyland as Blue arrives

Disneyland Monorail Mark VII Disneyland begins riderless daytime tests of the Mark VII Monorail Red next week in anticipation of a public debut by mid-May, Disney officials said.

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) could sign off on Monorail Red as early as this week, clearing the way for employee test runs and eventually park visitors, a Disney spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, the shrink-wrapped Monorail Blue trains recently arrived at Disneyland via flatbed truck, Dateline Disneyland column. Late last week, sections of Blue were lowered by crane onto the beamway and pushed into the backstage roundhouse, according to Monday in the Parks column.

Nighttime testing of Monorail Blue is scheduled to begin in early May, Disney officials said.

In late March, Disney put to rest persistent Internet chat room rumors that Monorail Red would have to be sent back to the assembly plant in Canada for major modifications.

The Mark VII’s sleek iconic exterior features color-shifting paint with gray pinstriping that evokes the stainless-steel side panels of the 1959 original designed by Disney Imagineer Bob Gurr.

Well I have to say Purple all the way. As much as I like the LimeGreen here on the DIS Purple is the best in show.

It just looks best against the Blue skys of Fl.

The monorail will now forever be known to me as "old Band Aid" Here I just thought that smell was the re-circulated sweat of the billions of people that have ridden it.
Anyway, back to my first memory of the monorail...
Back in 1977 my parents and I stayed at the Poly (a place I still haven't been able to afford to get to stay at). Being 8 years old and ready to get going I wound up sitting with the pilot for about a half an hour circling the lagoon as they ran system checks. Even then it was totally safe. It would automatically stop if the monorail got too close to another monorail. My parents of course had no idea where I was and were a little freaked, but they kept the memory alive for me by always reminding me of. 31 years later, I keep a sharp eye on my DS(4) because he has the explorer gene just waiting for a chance.

The last time we stayed at the Contemporary, I loved the roll on - roll off convenience with the stroller.

Oh, and my pick was for coral. I was stuck on it for 25 minutes.

Ha Ha about staying at the Poly.. I stayed every spring break, (then known as Easter vacation) with my family in the late 70's through 1986. We would stay for 7-10 days at the Poly. I remember the cost being $129 a night and that was A LOT of $$ to stay there! Gosh I was spoiled! lol..
Anyway, my Dad and brother were HUGE train buffs and my Dad would always request a room in the Maui building ( facing the MK it was the first builing to the right of the Grand Ceremonial Hut) We HAD to have a room facing the Monorail! Most people were looking for a Castle view but not us! lol.. We had to be able to see the Monorail! My brother would sit on that balconly, (always a 2nd floor room) and watch that monorail! It was at eye view up there and he was in heaven! :)

I was not fortunate enough to get to WDW as a child - my dad never saw the need of it since we had DL just 45 min away (but man o man did I ever want to) - so my first WDW Old Band-Aid experiences didn't come until I was in college. But, my DW and I stayed at the GF for our honeymoon, and I insisted upon taking Old Band-Aid as much as possible to get to the MK (relented on the boat once or twice). Our room had a castle view - but I remember sitting out on that balcony watching the trains glide by ever so swiftly to and from the MK.

At DL, the really cool thing was that Old Band Aid was the first daily operating train of it's kind in the western hemisphere from when it opened all the way til WDW opened - and then in the later '60s, DL got the city of Anaheim to do something that had never been done before with a theme park attraction - to allow OBA to cross over a public street! That was really cool. I loved leaving the park on OBA, headed for the DL Hotel and crossing over West Street (now DL Drive) - and watching those cars streaming by below. THAT was way cool to this once little boy. (Sorry - there never was any purple in So Cal that I recall - just red, blue, green and I think yellow. But they're down to just 2 trains now until the new ones come on line. But even still - no purple there. BUT, whe I'm at WDW in Oct, I'll be sure to try and ride purple just for you, chill! ;)

I tried to justify it this year, but couldn't. My wife's company needs to have another convention in WDW. That's how we got to stay at the Contemporary last time. Oh, well. Have a great time at the Poly! At least I'll eat at Ohana on Aug 30th.

When I'm paying the value resorts are just FINE with me! :rotfl2: My kids, DD (14) and DS (12) have been many times as well. My DH is NOT a Disney fan.. ( this is one of those things that I should have considered prior to marriage! :rotfl2: ) However 15 happy years later we have found a compromise.. I only make him come on one out of every three or four trips. If I use the value resorts, I can go on MORE trips! My dream is to return to Poly for one trip in the near future. I love, love, love it there and would just die to be back on the monorail circuit again!

Time for an OLD BAND-AID fact

Front-cab riding

In some cases passengers may request seats in the front cab of the train with the pilot. There are two bench seats in front of the control console, with room for a total of four riders. These seats provide a unique panoramic view not available from the passenger cars. Front-cab access is controlled by Disney employees and is generally granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Guests who board the front of either the Express or Epcot trains must disembark at the next station, while those boarding the front of a Resort train generally are allowed stays no longer than a single round-trip circuit. Monorail pilots may give out souvenir "co-pilot license" cards to guests riding in front with them.

Thanks it seemed like once we filled it She decided she need more space in her Room. She went from that Bunk Full Fulton to a Slat on the Floor Full Futon.

It really did open her small room up so I can't blame her I have the One NBX globe in my room , a few stayed in hers and everything else got packed away.

It was real neat to sit there in the Dark with just the outer lights and globes shining listening to the OBA. You could look right up through it from her bottom bed.

I always thought that it smelled like a petting zoo. I do not want to really know what makes that scent though. I can only imagine.

Purple was always my favorite color for Old Band-Aid but now that it has officially been retired along with pink I have to pick a new favorite. I think I will go with teal because it was made with undamaged parts from the purple train.

I LOVE OLD BAND-AID!!!!!

lol... I had forgotten about this thread! chill... I thought i'd share with you that when I was back in Sept I was on a quiet monorail car with just my friend and another group jumped on at the Poly and sat in the other section. As we were sitting there in the quiet waiting for the monorail to resume the woman said to her friend, " I always thing this thing smells like band aids!" lol.. it made me chuckle to myself, sorry I forgot to come home and share this sooner! :)

That's great!!! I love to hear sttories like that and I hope to experience some one saying it one day. I would laugh so hard if I ever heard anyone call the monorail Old Band-Aid. I will be there in November maybe my dream will come true. Thanks for the story, it's great to hear from you.

Our first family trip on-site was 2004 at the Poly.

We went to the monorail station for our first family trip and in pulled monorail purple...and the front car was open! Pilot Doug was the best and monorail purple had a great place in our family's heart from that day forward.

I love thjat story! It is amazing how over long periods of time so many of us have had such similar great experiences at WDW. My Family stayed at Poly back in 1974 and when we went to the platform Purple pulled up and we also rode in the front. I was only six at the time but it is a great memory for myself and my brother. That is why purple was always number one for me. It will be odd not seeing the purple train when I visit in November.
