Frank is still out of the hospital....which means he is still here.

He is sick. I took my mom to the doctor today. She is weak and faint and has a lot of pain in her knees and back. She got some cortosone (sp?) shots.

I know I have said this before, but being in this position is really tough.

Lisa....

There were days when I had my grandfather living with us that I just wanted to toss in the towel and give up. I couldn't because while my mom was working, I was the one home (I was in college at the time) and took care of my grandfather as much as I could.

It's is indeed a very difficult place to be in. You love the person but you hate the circumstances.

I know it may seem hard to do, but take some time for you... even if it is a few minutes alone to have a cup of tea or listen to some music.

You are a very important person and we love you very much...

Your Majesty... :goodvibes

Sending Royal hugs your way!!!

Okay, now that we've got a new thread, will someone PLEASE give me permission to stop trying to catch up on the old one???? We're in the middle of tech week for 2 weekends of HSM and I can only do about 10 pages at a time. I think I'm still on page 153 of the old thread.

Someone please tell me that I won't be struck by lightning if I never get back to finishing it. I'm already haunted by what I might have missed in Part 1 that's MIA!!!

I meant to watch Lost & Survivor tonight from last night, but got distracted. I was actually CLEANING! Somehow my motivation finally kicked in. Our living room is almost clean, and definitely clean enough for me to vacuum & shampoo the rugs tomorrow morning. I would tonight but am too sleepy. Bathroom is clean and I got a tiny start on my room. Tomorrow I hope to finish my room and move onto the kitchen, and Tyler and I will do his room together either tomorrow night or Sunday. :thumbsup2

Okay, I feel better. It's just that darned perfectionist tendency that makes me feel like I have to do it all, you know? Probably why I'm sitting here in the office printing out the remaining 1200 HSM programs while everyone else is having a great time at the theater. If I didn't do it, it wouldn't get done..... No Dennis - you have that backwards. I am the one that has to thank you and all other vets.

You are very welcome. I would do it all over again; My Duty and My Honor to serve.

I think that at some time while on board, the "LBB" needs to meet in Diversions to swap military stories, hoist a few libations, and honor all of our vets!

Having served as a U.S. Army Officer on active duty for over 12 years, I concur with DrHug, it too was my duty and my honor to uphold the freedoms we now enjoy. I feel sad for the RAF personnel that cannot walk into town without being harassed. It is not right. I had many a friend stationed with the BAOR (British Army of the Rhine) while I was stationed in Germany and none of them were less patriotic to Queen and Country as we "Yanks" were to our Stars & Stripes and the freedoms they represent. I hope those who despise the military will soon remember the words of GEN Douglas McArthur who said "that no one prays for peace more than the professional soldier, for it is he who must suffer the consequences of war." and also that they remember it is because of the soldier standing guard that keeps the light of our freedoms burning bright and allows them to disagree.

I will now get down from my soap box and find a pint (or half liter) to raise to thank my fallen comrades.:drinking1

Hi all!!

I have had to completely skip the entire last thread

So, please catch me up if anything really important is happening (of if I missed anything cool).

I am writing to you all from the Hilton Garden Inn in Valencia. We are spending the weekend at ... gasp ... Magic Mountain for Tiffany's 15th Bday.

** My brother asked us if we were afraid "the big mouse" would be jealous :rotfl: :rotfl2: :rotfl:

** My mom called me to see if I needed to be bailed out of jail (since we homeschool in CA) :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Do I have a funny family or what!! :dance3:

We arrived late since David had a late hockey game, but everyone is settled and asleep ... so of course I am on the DIS!! ;)

Tomorrow we are off to ride Tatso, Goliath and a few other "world record holders" roller coasters. Fun, Fun, Fun.

Sunday is Physics Day at Magic Mountain (sponsored by K'nex). David and Dave (dh) are looking forward to seeing what will be available. Usually many stations throughout the parks where you can build roller coasters and explore the wonders of Physics.

The kids participated in the Y.E.S. Physics classes at Disneyland this past year. They took the Energy class and the Motion class. Really fun and interesting for 12-17rs. They also have animation classes and a CA History session. The Y.E.S. series is one of the "best kept secrets" of DL.

I was a registered adult for almost 5 years. My daughters roped me into it, and it was a blast being a leader and co-leader, with 4 other women, including Angie. 28 girls in the troop. The last year I was a leader, we took first place in skills at Junior Jam. Out of almost 30 troops. We could have waxed most of the Boy Scout troops in the area. I was a Cub Scout when my Avatar picture was taken. Too bad the membership is dropping. It was so worthwhile. Good memories. Troop 1439, Anaheim.

DH was registered as well. In North Carolina he was a "DoDad". As in Dad do this Dad do that. He loved camping with the girls. Some of our best trips were when the dads were with.

Way to go with Junior Jam!!!. Most troops in our area don't camp and the girls have no idea about fundamental camping skills. It so sad.

Should be just a tornado watch V, which only means conditions are such that it's possible for a tornado to form and not that there is one there. The warning is when one was actually spotted, whether in the sky or touched down, and is right down the road from wherever the warning gets posted and you HAVE to run to the basement. The warning is when the sirens go off. So the warnings are usually a few minutes at a time because of how fast the tornado moves. When it moves past the warning is gone.

Unless it's done differently in FL, I don't know, that's just how it is here.

Good morning all. That is what the news is calling our weather. It has been snowing almost steady for 24 hours and is going to snow until at 7 PM this evening. Last time weather was seen like this in this part of the state was in '78. We even had lightening and thunder around 5 AM.:scared1: The airport is a mess. Most of the flights are cancelled or delayed and all counties are on a Level two snow emergency at least. Some are under a level three. For those lucky to be in Florida and CA a Level 2 means do not be on the road unless it is absolutely necessary, level 3 is the roads are closed to everything except emergency vehicles and you will get a ticket if caught out. Hey John1 how bad it is for you? Here are some pictures.

Hi Carol and Marilyn, fellow table mates!!!:goodvibes

8:00pm sounds like a good idea. We'll make our own formal atmosphere where ever we eat. :thumbsup2

Since Noel left our group, I'm not sure who is the lead on our ressie. Do either of you know? We have DU as our travel agent. I could email Marla and ask her to enquire about requesting the 8:00 pm seating.

Carol, sorry to hear about all the snow. Lots of rain here. The puppy sure looks cute frolicing in the snow. With his little short legs he could get buried fast.

HOLY SMOKES! I've never heard of a snow emergency or levels of snow emergency! How awful! It just seems so bizarre because you're a few hours South of me, so it seems like we up here should be having more snow than you, but we have none. Well, stay inside and stay safe! Crazy stuff!

We had probably need to each contact our own TA's, though ours is DU too.

Also, this is just a request, so we may still get 8.30, but that will be ok too.:cool1:

Yea, the "big story" about licensing for homeschooling is all over the news.

Some more pictures from today. Just measured the snow on our deck and it is 9 inches. I know this isn't much for you Canadians but we haven't seen this much snow in years.

Isn't this great? Feel free to call me crazy but I LOVE big snowstorms or the occasional blizzard.

DH was silly enough to go to work at 5:30am. Wasn't too bad then. Don't know when or how he will make it home. Yep, there are now no vehicles allowed on the road. He is so stubborn. Last time we had a blizzard way back in 1978 he was stuck at work all night. Silly man doesn't learn.:confused3 Hope he has sense enough to stay safe even if it means being stuck there. Hope we don't lose electricity!

So Carol, you and Doug stay inside this weekend where it's warm & toasty! I suppose John1 & family are getting the same weather. "

Not all us Canadian folk are use to that, but we are getting the same this weekend. I am so sick of it all, two storms a week is taking a toll on my city. We are so not use to this. being on the north side of a huge lake, which keeps us warmer, and fairly south of most of Canada, we just don't get snow like this in an average year.

Hi all!!

** My mom called me to see if I needed to be bailed out of jail (since we homeschool in CA) :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

.........

:tinker: Karen

It's so funny, I must have had 15 emails yesterday from friends and family asking what I was going to do now that homeschooling is "illegal" in CA. I really think they are hoping to see us get arrested or something! I just laugh and remind them that no court decision is ever "final," and that this one will be tied up in court for YEARS!

DS (16) woudl LOVE to do the physics thing or take the YES classes at DLR. I've heard about them for years but never got around to formally checking them out. Do you have to be part of a group, or can you sign up individually for them?

I must have missed something - what is the homeschooling issue?

There was a huge decision in the California Court of Appeals that states that parents can only educate their children at home if they have a valid California teaching credential.

It was one family who had been through the courts for years on various family issues that is at the center of the whole thing. Unfortunately they were not members of HSLDA, so neither the HSLDA lawyers, nor any of the big homeschooling association lawyers were aware of the case nor its potential implications until the decision had already been handed down. Now HSLDA and the others are scrambling to submit amicus briefs and try to have the decision "depublished" (technical term that means the decision will affect only this particular family, not all homeschoolers).

As I said, this will probably go on for years as all the lawyers start to jump on the bandwagon. All the big associations issued advisories to their members cautioning them not to panic; to stick to the status quo (sorry, HSM on the brain!) and wait it out.

No Dennis - you have that backwards. I am the one that has to thank you and all other vets.

We got our huge dump the other day but since then we have been going in fast melt mode.

My girls were excited as we brought out their spring jackets for them to wear:

They still had to wear snow pants, but they were excited to see their spring coats come out.

I can even see bits of my lawn starting to peek out in places (mainly those closest to the house that got less snowfall). And despite my best efforts I believe the ice rink in the back yard is now lost for the season. Here is Shaelyn trying to shovel it to see if it can used again:

Way to go with Junior Jam!!!. Most troops in our area don't camp and the girls have no idea about fundamental camping skills. It so sad.

There used to be a radio talk show host here in So Cal who, every time he had a caller who mentioned that he was a Vietnam-era vet, would make a point of saying, "Welcome Home." Many times the caller would break down in tears, even all these years later. For some, it was the very first welcome they had heard since coming home. Most of them were just spit on and called "baby killers."

It made me much more aware of being deliberate about thanking servicemen when I see them. I'm so glad there are people who recognize the incredible sacrifice our servicemen and women make for US and who are willing to honor them.

Unless it's done differently in FL, I don't know, that's just how it is here.

well, I have washed, dried and folded three loads of laundry and filled two banana boxes with junk to go to the curb. Taking a break now. The girls have been playing school all morning...Samantha is such a boss. She has to run the show! Now I am making macaroni - for me, while they eat chicken ceasar salad....something is wrong with this picture.
Well, good news for John, he is driving the explorer. since he only has to go to work and back, he's driving in second gear. Now, why did I need to get a car?

I got some clothes out of the back of the closet...two minnie tank tops my mom bought me. I can wear those over swim suits I guess. Haley still fits in her custom Minnie overalls, which is nice. Can't do much with them since they have her name on them!

Well, okay. Rose petals all over the turned down bed, and on the floor around it, the night before your breakfast in bed. I know it's a girly thing guys, but, well, it turned out great! :lmao:

That actually sounds so FUN (sorry to be such a CA girl). :hippie:

Hope everyone STAYS SAFE.

DH accepted a temporary job transfer (for a 3-6mo project that turned into a 18mo project!) in Boston ... well Marlborough ... Massachusetts. I was so excited to stay in the snow. The first winter ('92-'93) was the "worst winter in 100 years" I think that's what they called it ... the next winter ('93-'94) was the "worst winter ... like ever" or something. And ... I was SO DISAPPOINTED. :confused3

It snowed beautifully for days ... then ... YUK!! Dirty brown, yellow (insert joke here) and rocky snow trash on the sides. Potholes made the roads almost unusable, and people were SO GRUMPY ... for months!!

I really thought once it started snowing, it just kept snowing ... you know, the pretty white stuff. :rotfl: Live and learn.

The sad thing was just how many people were in serious trouble (many deaths) with the snow. :sad2:

I sure hope everyone stays warm and STAYS SAFE. Just think, you can always stay home and DIS!!

I must have missed something - what is the homeschooling issue?

The courts have ruled that homeschooling must be done by credentialed teachers of that grade. We think we are okay because we belong to a charter school that is overseen by a credentialed teacher. But those that are independent or belong to a "private" school may fall under these new rules. Funny thing about the state, we do not have enough credentialed teachers to teach public school. Of course there are many more issues involved, but at the moment this is all we need to be concerned with.

Brings back memories of growing up in Montana. I used to LOVE all of the snow. I don't know if I would do that well with it now. We get a little bit here, but never much over 3 to 4 inches.

We agree. If just a few individuals filed a lawsuit, the issue could be trapped in the legal system for 10 or more years. I don't think it is something we are worried about, but we would not see this right or opportunity taken away from all of us.

Looks like you can ... but we had so much fun on the "homeschoolers" day ... Southwest Home Educators "reserved" the entire day (all classes) ... I really recommend that. Otherwise you are "merged into" a school group ... might not be as fun/easy since there are a lot of group activities. Homeschoolers seem to be able to work better with "whoever is around" than school groups who seem to want to form "cliques" and are not interested in meeting new friends on their fieldtrip. (Just my opinion based on my experience). That one always cracks me up (the idea that homeschoolers are not socialized).

I was just looking at the Disneyland Y.E.S. classes website last night. They really do look great.

The homeschool issues was simply handled incorrectly. That particular family had LOTS of issues.

Our "governator" seems very pro-homeschooling (pro-family in general) :goodvibes and immediately published this press release:

Gov. Schwarzenegger Issues Statement Regarding Court of Appeals Home Schooling Ruling

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today issued the following statement regarding the recent Second District Court of Appeals ruling on home schooling:

"Every California child deserves a quality education and parents should have the right to decide what's best for their children. Parents should not be penalized for acting in the best interests of their children's education. This outrageous ruling must be overturned by the courts and if the courts don't protect parents' rights then, as elected officials, we will."

The judge made the error of a "general judgment" (which would affect 170,000+ homeschoolers) instead of a "specific judgment" only affecting that particular family. Personally, no worries here!! ;)

I think alot of people THRIVE on drama. Most of the homeschoolers I know are just "watching the show" popcorn::

All this talk of military and the like, plus the conversation earlier about graduation and the 70's made me think of this picture. It is of me and my Dad circa 1974/5.

The DVC "Welcome Home' has a double meaning for me.

The first time I was ever thanked was actually at Disneyland. I was sitting on a bench, next to a little old Vietnamese man. I spoke to him in Vietnamese and he looked at me and asked, "Oh, you were in my country?" I said, "Yes", and told him when and where. He then said to me, "Thank you so much for all you did for my Country and my people". That little old man made me cry. He also made my day and helped bring me home.

That is a hard story for me to tell. Whew. :goodvibes :confused3

Amazing that it was at my favorite place.

Wow, I sure missed this on the news. I hope it all works out quickly for you.

Good morning all,

I'm sending you some sunny, warm weather... It will be there in about a week!:wizard:

This time I need the rain...next Saturday Wilson has a big conflict. It's the first race of a new class, IFK (international "funky" kart) (not) and he is likely to do very well in his class 5-8 years old, and if he does has the opportunity to well and advance to the next area (not sure what it's called, regional?)
AND
He has a huge Little League day too it is openning ceremony, team and personal pictures, hitathon (fund raiser) and the first game of the season.

The gokart race is 2+ hours away and it's all day, so it is a one or the other thing.

Both Paul and Wilson want to race, I feel badly as I think he should be with his team.

If it rains baseball is postponed...and the race still goes on.

Praying for rain for next weekend....

reservations with La Perla? how did you get them and what was the cost? I have emailed to no end! I want to do the lunch buffet and divers on our own....not really with the city tour.

What a dilemma. Here's hoping for rain for next weekend for you! :goodvibes

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) - Like a herd of antelope, jockeying and shoving for position, 150 young women raced down Amsterdam's most famed fashion street in stiletto heels Thursday, racing for a $15,000 prize.

The race on the P.C. Hooft street called the "Stiletto Run" is only three years old but has quickly grown in popularity and spawned imitation races in Germany, Sweden, Poland and Russia.

The race's motto is "Shopping is a Sport" and friendly competition is encouraged - though not always observed.

"At the start there was a lot of pushing, you really get elbowed over," said Fauve Stukje, 18, who came with a small entourage and a big pink sign - but failed to win, show or place.

She said she slightly regretted her choice of shoes, which were nearly 4 inches high - a little higher than the 3 1/2 inch minimum.

Tamara Ruben, 25, from the town of Veenendaal, claimed first prize in the 380-yard race, running so smoothly you might think she was wearing sneakers.

Asked how she would spend the money, she said: "Anything but high heels."

It has started snowing here, but we're not supposed to get as much as the parts of the midwest to the east of us.

I just got back. I have been out of the house since 8:00 AM, running errands.

I am holing in for the rest of the day. After I prepare for my WW meetings tomorrow morning, I'll probably park my butt and play video games.

Tomorrow is my first weigh-in for the Spring Staff Challenge. I'm going to end up wearing gym shorts and a t-shirt under my clothing again, so I can strip off for the weigh-in.

15 days since I was on the DIS! So I'm 100 pages behind on Part 5 and the whole of Part 6.

Had a great week's vacation at WL, the highlight being our mini-meet with Monica. :cool1:

But on our last day I started suffering with some horrible virus which really hit me when we got home on Sunday. I took to my bed Mon and Tue but dragged myself out and back to work Wed, as I had to be away with work Thu and Fri. You know I was ill when I didn't even try to DIS whilst at home those 2 days. :sad2: I could've done without the days away from home, but I was needed. I was administering exams to 43 new Army doctors whilst feeling poorly, and not one of them noticed! Tripping over a step and falling full length on a concrete floor didn't help much. Although I do now have some wonderful bruises.

Anyway, I'm home. Hopefully kicking the virus. And my next mission, should I wish to accept it, is to catch up with these threads.

Thank you. Glad you got on your soap box last night. We need to hear this often. And thank you for serving. DrHug will enjoy swapping stories with you. He was enlisted, does he still need to salute you?

Look forward to catching up on that conversation when I get chance.

Can my DH join in the swapping of stories? He served 23 years in the RAF. (I only served a couple of years - "5 minutes" according to DH - I left when we got married, so don't have the same range of stories to swap!)

Do you have the saying, "Pull up a sandbag"? That's what we say when it's going to be a story swapping session.

And could I please again ask for pixie dust/prayers for my DBro. He has now developed Guillain-Barre (?sp), lost the feeling in both legs and hands. This is true anywhere in Mexico. Never get in a cab without knowing how much is is going to cost. I know I have said it before but remember if you want air condition then you better make sure before you get in the cab. They will all say they have AC and then when you get in they roll the windows down and laugh and say Mexican air!

We received our CafePress order this week, but I have to say I was a little disappointed.

I know on the website it showed the mis-spelling "Theives" but I thought I'd read on here that it had been corrected so went ahead and ordered. But it is mis-spelled on our things. I like the t-shirts (except for the spelling), but am very disappointed with DH's baseball hat - the logo is tiny and a bit smudged, can't read anything after "Westbound Repositioning Cruise".

Having to pay £13.69 (approx $30) tax and handling charges to import the package (in addition to the $23.50 shipping) didn't help either. :sad2:

There used to be a radio talk show host here in So Cal who, every time he had a caller who mentioned that he was a Vietnam-era vet, would make a point of saying, "Welcome Home." Many times the caller would break down in tears, even all these years later. For some, it was the very first welcome they had heard since coming home. Most of them were just spit on and called "baby killers."

It made me much more aware of being deliberate about thanking servicemen when I see them. I'm so glad there are people who recognize the incredible sacrifice our servicemen and women make for US and who are willing to honor them.

I missed most of the conversation but just have to put my two cents in. I have always - even as a little kid been so conscious of the military that I think in part is what influenced me to go. I only served 3 yrs in the Army but in that time, I was overwhelmed with feelings and an utter respect to ALL persons serving in any military - as today it seems to be mostly voluntary.

Anyway, last Veteran's day, DH and I were sitting in a local restaurant for lunch when in walked a prior service member (I believe Navy) with his cap and other memorabilia. Well, I was noticing no one would look at him. As DH and I walked past, I caught his eye and as I welled up - all I could do was put my hand on his shoulder. Don't know what it was that made me do this as I am unusally shy in person, but it must of been the moment because he just patted my arm and said thank you.

Here I was trying to say thank you and he ended up comforting me!

While I missed the first Operation Desert Storm - I still had my baby brother go there and we had to live through that. So now, I try to voice it -don't always succeed as I get too choked up sometimes -by I have so much respect for those that can reach out to others and say thank you. I still feel we can learn a lot from others and I thank those of you who have shared your stories.

I was thanked for the first time for my service (which I didn't feel particulary worthy of - after all - I didn't do anything) but this lady I bowled with felt it necessary and the pride I felt afterward was the best high I ever had. Had to admit - I was dumbstruck - didn't think anyone cared anymore. Its is definitely a moment to experience. You pause and then you realize - there are people out there who still care. Like I said - the best high ever!
Sorry -just had to comment. :lovestruc

Yup, that would be it! There's a newer one though. It looks like the OP starts a new thread each week. I went through 2 whole threads filling out information for freebies. Very fun! :goodvibes

I did the freebies for awhile to. I had more samples than I knew what to do with. THey are great for traveling. I have started again now. Beware they great alot of clutter.

Well, DH called at noon to say he is leaving work. Hopefully he and the car both make it home in one piece. Let's see how long this takes. In good weather it takes about seven minutes. I am going to be worried sick until he is home safe and sound.

Donna

I hope he got home ok.

PJ- I was able to be added to the map without you adding my e-mail. Sorry I didn't realize when I did I needed to e-mail you. I hope it is ok I added us though.

I know I will have missed all sorts of things over the last 2 weeks so would like to send :grouphug: to all who need it for various situations.

And could I please again ask for pixie dust/prayers for my DBro. He has now developed Guillain-Barre (?sp), lost the feeling in both legs and hands. He's back in hospital where they are treating him to hopefully halt the progress of this disease as otherwise it will paralyse his lungs next. He and his DW know they don't have much time left together now and so they want him to be at home, not in hospital. :sad1:

I'm so sorry your brother and sister in law are facing even more problems. this sounds nasty. Will be praying.
