HELP! I have always checked the wine and alcohol but carried on the tonic water. This time I thought I'd better check it. The luggage areas are not pressurized so how will that affect the carbonated tonic water? Should I carry it on? Right now I wrapped each bottle in a large ziplock bag and have it in bubble wrap. So it won't break but will it explode? Michelle do you know? Kathy

Kathy, I'm not sure, I've never checked carbonated items...I think if you wrapped them securely and put them in ziploc bags you'd probably be okay, just be careful when you open them! :)

Last two cruises we checked through Pepsi. We packed it three cans to each Ziploc freezer bag. So far, so good. No explosions. We are doing it again in a few weeks. Hope this helps.

Luggage areas on planes are usually pressurized. We've never had any problems shipping carbonated beverages in our luggage.

Go to this link: http://www.air-transport.org/public/publications/display1.asp?nid=965
and scroll down to the section on "cargo hold"

are pressurized! That is where they put animals such as large dogs and things down there so they have to be pressurized! I think the only difference is that NO ONE can go down there and they dont have the oxygen masks that they do upstairs! When I worked in shipping we shipped all kinds of things similar to Carbonated Beverages and they did fine on the plane! I would just make sure you put them in a few ziploc bags so in case of rough handling or something that if they get punctured they wont explode all over your clothes!
I have packed all kinds of soda with me on the planes that we have gone on and have had no problems ever! When we went to Japan I took 9 24 packs of Diet Coke with me and on that long flight they never exploded!
I am sure you will be fine!

Thank you to everyone who responded. I thought the animals were shipped with luggage but when my husband and I discussed it he thought it was not pressurized. Glad to hear it is! The tonic bottles are the plastic ones by Canada Dry so they fit into a large ziplock bag. I also used 2 roller-board carry-on bags to pack the liquids so they wouldn't be too heavy. And, I used lots and lots or bubble wrap.

I am on my lunchbreak from packing. So what am I doing, reading the board!Kathy
