If you live in the northern states and are pale at this time of year, do you tan before going to Florida to minimize any burning? And to look better in your shorts!;)

I used to tan in a booth, but now I'm getting a little nervous about doing that due to the health risks.

I thought about doing the spray on tan, I know that only lasts a few days though. Maybe do it the day before leaving?

Any advice?
Thanks!:confused3

Do Mystic Tan!!

http://www.mystictan.com/home.htm

Even if it only lasts for a couple days, at least do it so that you'll have enough time to get your real tan on in Florida!! Therefore when the fake tan ware off, you really can't tell!!

Recently I tanned before a trip to Las Vegas. I didn't want to be too dark but I wanted to look good in a light colored dress. I just went every other day and used a high quality lotion from the tanning salon. I started out at 4 minutes and built up to 8 minutes a session. I was by no means dark but had a nice healthy, not sick looking glow. I too worry about the health hazards of tanning but it was worth it to me not to be so pale for my trip. If I'm still pale by the time our Disney trip rolls around in May I'll do it again. I haven't used the spray tans but I'm curious about it....but honestly every time I consider doing it I remember that Friends episode where Ross used the spray tan and looked ridiculous!

Mystic tans are the big thing here in SoCal. All the famous people do it and I have friends that do it and you can't tell that it's fake at all. I totally thought the same thing too, you might look orange, but not with this, it's actually pretty good and I'm definitely going to try it before I hit up the beach here soon!!

I live in MN so I do tan. I start about a month ahead of time and go 2 times a week. I just don't want to expose my pale northern glow to the FL sun too much! :goodvibes

Use a "gradual" self-tanner - they look pretty natural, and you can keep it up while you're at WDW.

I avoid tanning beds like the plague and use sunscreen religiously -- I have two relatives that were in their early-to-mid-20s who developed malignant melanoma, and one of them used tanning beds all the time (she got her melanoma on the bottom of her foot, which isn't usually a spot that's exposed to sunlight). My brother-in-law died from melanoma at the age of 26, and my cousin had to have a big chunk of tissue removed from the bottom of her foot. It's just not worth it to try to get a "real" tan when so many good self-tanning products are available. Many people think you can't get skin cancer from tanning beds, but you're exposed to unfiltered UV rays, and they're terrible for your skin!

I love, love, LOVE Mystic Tan. I did it for my wedding and loved the natural results. I would do it now in a heartbeat, but I'm pregnant, and I don't know if that's okay or not. It is a great way to get some color before your trip.

Another vote for Mystic here! I LOVE the Mystic tan. However, I have discovered that there are several different models for the booth, and some of them are not as great as others. I am not sure what the really good one is called, but near me they only have one at the most expensive place (of course). It is worth the money though. You get a great tan without the risk!

I've done this before (going tanning) - in fact I did it before our last trip which was in '06. I am extremely pale and for me it was more about preventing burning too badly when exposed to the Florida sun. I wasn't tanning for looks, just to build up a base so my skin didn't freak out.

I was thinking of doing it again at the beginning of the summer before our trip, but my dad had skin cancer this past year. They got it in time, but it was a scare for us all. Although, he went his whole life spending lots of time outside WITHOUT sunscreen ever. Now he knows he can't do that anymore.

The thing with the spray on tans and lotion tans is that they won't keep you from burning once you're exposed to the sun.

It sort of is, though. I mean, you breathe that stuff in while you're in the booth. The website specifically says to ask a medical professional before using Mystic Tan while pregnant. I'll just embrace my pasty skin while I'm pregnant. :cutie:

I am a pale redhead with horrible blue roadmap veins from my thighs to my toes. I do the spray on tan (I think it is Mystic Tan) either the day before or day that I leave. It lasts close to a week. The first time I did not put enough of the barrier shield on my hands and they ended up very dark and I looked strange. Now I do extra barrier lotion on them and hold them presssed together up above my head and have no problem. In the summer I can get by with using tanning lotion on my legs only; I don't get real dark, just a very light coat of color. The blue veins are less noticeable that way. Once at a golf outing someone noticed a bad vein just above my knee and commented on my "tatoo". Then she looked more closely and said "oops - sorry, didn't realize it wasn't a tatoo..." That's when I started using the tanning lotion :thumbsup2

I tried Mystic once and it came out TERRIBLE! I have eczema and VERY dry skin, so this may have had something to do w/ it. I was so sad too. I'm extremely pale and practically glow in the sunlight. I finally wanted a "tan" for once. :sad2:

I don't know how tan you want to be, but my family gets all pasty and pale around this time of year. We have been using the Jergen's moisturizer and everyone has a nice healthy glow, not unnatural or orange at all. I have not tried the one for the body or the accelerated one. We use the facial one for medium skin tones even though we are a little fair. You must use it everyday and don't forget your neck. It is very inexpensive and there are often coupons. It is safe as well. Try it for a few days and see if you like it. We Do!

I am person who could blind someone else because I am so white. In the past I have gotten a natural looking tan using Jergens. My only problem with that is if I go swimming it seems to come off:confused3 . Does the Mystic Tan that people are talking about also come off in the water parks and pool?

A salon here has three sessions of Mystic Tan for 48 dollars, that doesn't seem bad.

The site says to avoid chlorine the first day.

The place where I had my Mystic Tan done said that it is made from sugar cane... I could taste the sweetness when I'd breathe in.

She said you can't do it if you're diabetic, just as a fyi thing.

I 2nd the use of Jergens Healthy Glow. It takes at least 5-7 days until you notice a change, but it's really natural looking and does cover up those spider veins too :) There's also a firming version of it that I just started using yesterday, so I'm not sure if it'll actually do all that, but for an extra $1.00 I figured I'd give it a shot.

I have not noticed that swimming causes me to "lose" the Jergen's Healthy Glow "tan".

I did Mystic tan one year and oh boy did I turn a strange shade of dark orange even though I don't tan that colour :rotfl:

And then down the back of my legs I had a drip I didn't notice so the back of my calfs had a big orange drip mark.

I was told not to shower for 24 hours, and tried to pat my face off the next am and all the tan came off in streaks. It worsened over the next few days it did not fade, it streaked all over my face and neck. :headache:

I have used Jergens and found it nice, but next time I will go to a booth.

They have some pretty good self tanners out on the market. I like the one by Jergens. I know people that have had really good luck with the spray on tans.

I don't tan every summer, but have done it for my wedding, my girlfriend's wedding, a trip to Jamaica, and now this trip. I have used both the Mystic Tan and self tanners. If you just want a nice healthy look then these are great, but if you want a base for the sun in Florida it does not help at all. You would need to use a tanning bed to get a base to help from sunburn. So before I go, I use the tanning bed a couple times a week for about a month. When I come back I use the self tanner to keep the glow.

I used to try and tan because in high school that is what everyone did. I never got really dark because I am so fair but I was going all the time, so finally I stopped and started using self tanners. Now they are advanced and don't turn you orange if you get a quality kind. I have done Mystic tan as well but prefer Clarins Self Tanning Instant Gel to anything!! it is AWESOME and does not rub off on your clothes or sheets and it does not smell as bad as some products out there either. It is clear gel though, so if you want something tinted I would recommend st. tropez lotion or foam because you can see exactly where you put it! Both of those are pretty pricey, but to me it is worth it! ALSO remember to put on the SPF when you are down there!!!

I know everyone is different, but why do people say they will burn horribly if they don't have a base tan?! If you use plenty of sunblock and reapply regularly especially if you're around water, you shouldn't burn. I think what most people don't just come out and say especially living up north is that they want to be tan, but not too tan; they want to be in the sun, but they don't want the damage. Any and All exposure to the sun or tanning booths is damaging to your skin!!

I know an older woman who stayed out of the sun her whole life and her skin looks almost the same as mine and I am 20! I know another woman the same age who said she used to rub baby oil on her skin for a tan and "bake" outside. let me tell you that the woman who stayed out of the sun looks 20 years younger than the one who didn't and for that reason alone I stick to self tanners and serious SPF!

I'm also a huge fan of the Mystic tan. I am VERY pale and it works great on me. It is important to really exfoliate before you go. And lots of lotion every day after helps you keep your color longer. Swimming in chlorine does make it fade out faster but it still lasts almost a whole week on me. :cool1:

I tend to have difficulty tanning. Not that I try mind you, but put me next to someone else and my tan is another's normal skin tone. :rotfl: But I do spend quite alot of time outside in the summer. Even when I went to the tanning booth, it takes me longer to tan and is harder for me to keep it than most. Don't know why.

That said, it is not always hard for me to burn. The first day I was in Disney I lathered on the sunscreen and it was spf 30 every few hours but with sweating so much I guess it did not work and boy was I burnt.

I would rather go tanning for a few weeks in order to avoid I am sure even more damage from a serious burn like I had at Disney.

That is just me though. I do not try to tan and I am glad. I have many friends who tan year round and yes some are looking older than they should. I am 38 and look late 20's early 30's at most I am told. :worship: Part of that though is good genes thanks to my mother, ppl think we are sisters. The other part is not baking in the sun.

We were in Florida for 2 weeks 3 years ago. My DS got sunburned. Not a bad burn. We used sunscreen, but he was in the water non-stop and would forget to re-apply. This past summer we were at the dermatologist office to have warts removed from DS's hand. While we were waiting I noticed a strange mole. He ended up having atypical nevus or a precancerous mole that can turn into melanoma. The doctor had to remove a small amount in the area and DS had stitches. DS, along with our entire family, has to have full body checks yearly because this tends to run in families. Tanning bed are just as bad as the sun. Please use plenty of sunscreen, wear a hat, and try not to get a tan.

Please do NOT go to a tanning booth. It is a myth that this minimizes burning. You are damaging your skin to protect it from damage? doesn't make sense. I lost my best friend to skin cancer. She went to tanning booths every so often to get a "base" before going on vacation. The time between diagnoses and death was under a year. It is NOT worth it. She was 24 years old.

I also am a big fan of Mystic Tan. I usually do 2-4 sessions over two weeks before we go to Disney. It looks fantastic. It stays on the whole time we are there. It doesn't sweat off or rub off. I usually take the Jergens gradual tan lotion and reapply it every couple of days to keep a nice color.

You MUST wear sunscreen though every day b/c the mystic tan does not protect your skin.

I'm so glad to find all of these replies telling people not to tan (either outside or in tanning beds)! I already posted earlier about having two relatives in their 20s get melanoma -- it's just not worth it!

(Why do we think tans look "healthy," anyways? They're just a sign of skin damage! A co-worker just got back from a cruise and got a dark tan, and everyone keeps exclaiming how good she looks! She's in her late 50s and I you can just see the new age spots forming - she's going to look really blotchy.)

Also have to chime in and beg people not to use tanning beds (although I am admittingly intrigued by Mystic Tan). 4 weeks before my wedding, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Malignant Melanoma...which had spread to my lymph nodes. I have emergency surgery that week and had to stay in the shade for my entire Caribbean honeymoon! I was tanning once or twice a week before my wedding to "get a base" and you can see how that turned out (and in case you are questioning it...the original cancer site was in a place that did not get sun naturally). I have been very lucky and passed my 5 year mark this past summer. But I really have to BEG that people NOT use tanning beds to "get a base" (as tempting as it can be). I now use Jergens if I vacation in the winter...in the summer, I go with my natural color...and I wear sunscreen every day!

white means nothing to your child and your family. If you weren't born brown, then you weren't meant to be brown. Use mystic tan, use the tanning lotions, but please...do not subject yourself even ONCE to those death traps. IT IS NOT WORTH IT. Especially when you have a great, SAFE alternative.

I am an Irish girl...I am so white I glow. I use Mystic in the summer. I am a bronze goddess all summer long. No one can tell that I wasn't born that way. I can have my cosmetic tan and still be protected from the VIOLENT and damaging rays of the sun.

watching my friend die of this horrible horrible disease simply b/c she wasn't born with the skin tone she found most aesthetically pleasing was TORTURE. And make no mistake...it was a torturous way to die.

don't subject yourself to the possibility.

I say to each their own. People do things every day that puts them at risk for one thing or another. I myself dont tan in the tanning beds but I also am 1/2 italian and 1/2 portuguese so I already have an olive skin tone. People should be well aware of the risks they are taking when they tan, or drink alcohol, or smoke cigarettes, or eat fatty foods, or have unprotected sex..or I could go on and on..drive without a seat belt, drive in NYC (attempt at humor!!)...Do whats you feel is best for you. Weigh the risks and decide what works for you..and bottom line..have a great one!!

I am against using tanning booths. I come from a family that has strong cancer genes. I tend to bug my family too much about putting their sunscreen on but it is for their own benefit. I have found that every time we go to the water parks we put the lotion on liberally and reapply every 2 hours. Even with this one of us ends up getting burnt on our shoulders, chest, or back. Now what's up with that????

ITA with MissCammie (AKA CampbellScot). Don't take the risk. I'm a scout leader. Our "uniform" includes a hat, sunglasses and sunblock for all our outdoor adventures.

Now, MissCammie and MommyBuzz909, I'm just a guy. And I'm smart enough to know that dads don't really get a say in matters of taste and style. :lmao: (Hey, I partial to polo shirts with Disney characters. :lmao:)

But, ...

Have you ever asked your DHs what they think? They might actually prefer your "winter color." My wife also has very fair skin and I think she looks beautiful in any light.

I have been very lucky and passed my 5 year mark this past summer. But I really have to BEG that people NOT use tanning beds to "get a base" (as tempting as it can be). I now use Jergens if I vacation in the winter...in the summer, I go with my natural color...and I wear sunscreen every day![/QUOTE

Congrats on getting to your 5 year mark! I am an irish girl who only burns, peels, burns, peels, etc. I've given into the Jergens and use SPF 45 religiously (and force my kids too also). My 12 y/o daughter is even prous of being "Casper". Your story will keep me from being tempted. So glad everything turned out well for you.

As hard as it may be, just say no to tanning...

I tanned my way through the 80's - mostly outdoors during the summer months, worked as a camp counselor and lifeguard, and did a few booth sessions around prom and other special occassions. I am now in my 30's and have just had my third "precancerous" mole removed. Huge scars on my leg, upper arm, and chest. No more sun for me! And I did not burn easily and believed in getting a base tan. There is no safe tan - all color is skin damage. Go the fake route - fake tanner has come a LONG way!

Also, I have noticed over the past five or so years you just don't see as many people as darkly tanned as you did in previous years. I don't feel a bit out of place going to FL in the middle of the winter in all my glowing whiteness. Others may feel differently when looking at my legs... But that's their issue, not mine.

I did the mystic tan a day before I left & A few days into the trip, before I went to bed I just used Jergens natural glow. It kept my skin looking like a Natural tan. I'm also very pale w/ blue undertones & I didn't turn orange or anything. Depending what times you leave, if you do it a day before you leave- you can shower & moisturize the next morning.

YES it would work and you would still look tan! There are different levels though...level 1 gives you a hint of color, 2 makes you look tan, 3 makes you look like you were on vacation! I usually did 2 or 3 and I always did them in high school on a Friday if I had homecoming or a formal on Saturday. It is darkest right after you get it so I would do it the day before you go at least, or at least buy some gradual tanner to help keep your color. it is really pricey but REALLY good if you go to ulta or sephora get some bare escentuals faux tan moisturizer!

I am leaving on Friday so my tanning process starts tonight!

I completely agree. I wear a good sunscreen and a hat, and try to limit my sun exposure. I don't burn when I'm in Florida, even though I have pale Irish skin. I don't tan either, and it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I am one of those rare broads with a crazy ethnicity. I have pale skin naturally but if sunlight hits me for a very short period of time, I become very dark. So you can imagine that my arms and face are pretty different looking from my tummy or chest. Living in a state like Oregon where it rains something like 9 months out of the year I don't get to see natural sun very often but when I do the tan lines from tank tops and such last for nearly half a year.

Essentially what I am getting at is that I tan, using the tanning beds. Without it, I'd be very funny looking. I've tried Mystic Tan once and will not do it again, I hated the process, it looked uneven because of my weird skin tones to being with and I felt dirty. For someone who likes to take showers sometimes twice a day, feeling dirty is an absolute no-no.

Luckily for me though, I tan very easily and don't have to go more than once a month. I feel sorry for those who go more than 3 times a week, which A LOT of people do. I know it's bad for me, but I also wear SPF 4 when I go in there! There are different kinds of beds, all of which aren't great in general but there are some that are very very very safe in tanning bed standards. They're just like spending 10 minutes in the sun.

Lol, I'd like to know if anyone who has said not to tan because of it's dangers if they smoke? If so, then well...........

Since we are on the topic, I have blonde hair and blue eyes and spent 6 years as a lifeguard and water safety instructor. Needless to say, I have had all the sun exposure I need for a lifetime!! Now in my 40's, the sun damage is starting to show. A little late, but I am a nut when it comes to protection from the sun. I find that most people do not know how to use a sunscreen! Please read the following no matter what color your skin is:

from http://dermatology.about.com/cs/skincareproducts/l/blsunscreen.htm

Exposure to ultraviolet light, UVA or UVB, from sunlight accounts for 90% of the symptoms of premature skin aging such as wrinkles and skin cancers. The most important skin-care product available to prevent wrinkles and skin cancer is sunscreen, but most people do not use sunscreen correctly.

Important factors to consider with sunscreen use are the spectrum of UV radiation absorbed, the amount of sunscreen applied, and the frequency of application.
The SPF measures the amount of UVB absorption, but there is no method of reporting the UVA absorption. The only way to determine if a sunscreen protects against UVA and UVB radiation is to look at the ingredients. A good broad-spectrum sunscreen should have an SPF of at least 15 and contain avobenzone, titanium dioxide, or zinc oxide.
Most people use sunscreen improperly by not applying enough. They apply only 25% to 50% of the recommended amount. Sunscreen should be applied liberally enough to all sun-exposed areas that it forms a film when initially applied. It takes 20-30 minutes for sunscreen to be absorbed by the skin, so it should be applied at least a half an hour before going out in the sun. Sunscreen should also be the last product applied especially on the face since some sunscreens can break down in the presence of water contained in water-based foundations and moisturizers.
Reapplying Sunscreen
Most instructions on sunscreen labels recommend reapplying sunscreen "frequently", but the definition of "frequently" is vague. A common instruction is to reapply sunscreen after 2-4 hours in the sun. However, one study has shown that reapplying sunscreen 20 to 30 minutes after being in the sun is more effective than waiting 2 hours. It is possible that this time period is more effective because most people do not apply enough sunscreen initially, and this second application approximates the actual amount needed. Sunscreen should also be reapplied after swimming, excessive sweating, or toweling.

Daily Sunscreen
Sunscreen should be applied daily. The daily use of a low-SPF sunscreen (15) has been shown to be more effective in preventing skin damage than the intermittent use of a higher SPF sunscreen
Sunscreen and Insect Repellents
Insect repellents reduce the sunscreen's SPF by up to one-third. When using sunscreen and insect repellent together, a higher SPF should be used and reapplied more often.

PLEASE STAY HEALTHY AND USE SUNSCREEN!

I was going to tan prior to our June trip to WDW and our July trip to St. Augustine but I'm second guessing myself. My cousin was just diagnosed with Invasive Malignant Melanoma and has to undergo surgery in 2 weeks to explore her lymph nodes.

So, I dont' think I'll be tanning anymore. I'm going to embrace my pasty skin.

I tried Mystic Tan last year and it just wound up looking splotchy. Complete waste of $$ in my opinion.

I think I will try the Jergen's lotion though. Good to see someone had some success with it!

Nope, I don't smoke. I'm the previous poster who has two relatives who had melanoma in their mid-20s (and my brother-in-law died from it). I just worry that so many people don't realize the dangers of tanning (whether it's outdoors or in tanning beds). Wearing an SPF 4 in a tanning bed is like smoking "light" cigarettes. There's very much a "it won't happen to me" attitude out there. It's just not worth it.

Here's another benefit of not tanning: I stopped seeking any kind of tan in my late 20s, use sunscreen every day, and at the ripe old age of 46, I have absolutely no wrinkles. As another poster said: tanning is sun damage, pure and simple. That's where 90% of wrinkles and age spots come from. People often remark how good my skin looks for my age. I ran into a high-school classmate the other day - deep wrinkles! Even if you're not afraid of cancer, keep yourself from getting wrinkles!

Like some of the other posters, I prefer the Mystic tan with the jergens during the trip to maintain the color. For me, I usually do two applications of Mystic before I go - one to get the base color and another to add another layer as well as even out any areas that I botched with the barrier cream. I have very pale skin and burn easily, so tanning beds, or building a natural suntan is out of the question for me. Try as I might to embrace my natural color, I really think I look skinnier and sexier with a tan! (Does anyone else find that seems to be true?)

FOR SURE! Dark = slimming! And it hides cellulite! If I can't make my cellulite go away, then I at least want to cover it up any way I can! I also get highlights in the warmer months and feel that they look better when my skin has color.

I leave on Friday for Disney and as my roommate has been going tanning all month in preparation for her own trip, I just applied my first coat of self tanner and ALREADY look as dark as she does!! Can't wait to see her when we are 50 and she has wrinkles and I don't!

(Edited to add) BTW, just because you use a self tanner and are darker doesn't mean you are protected from the sun. Always make sure you are wearing some SPF when you are outside - even if it isn't sunny! I am 20 and I do this b/c do NOT want wrinkles!!!!!!!!!

I have tried Mystic Tan twice. The first time I was blotchy, second time perfect. They key is to exfoliate and moisturize before you go. The formula sticks to the dead skin better and that is why you get blotchy. The second thing is to use towels after you are done and rub the stuff in. That will help with the blotchiness. Remember it is a bronzer first and a self-tanner. You look darker because of the bronzer which stains you. The self-tanner will develop over the next hours. The bronzer can make you blotchy. When I took the time to rub it in evenly, my tan was better.

I COMPLETELY agree!

I realize that people are going to do what ever they want to do...but the "it won't happen to me" attitude is deadly. It really is. It CAN happen to you and it WILL if you are not more careful with your skin.

When a person quits smoking, their lungs go to work repairing themselves. This IS NOT THE CASE with skin. Damage done to your skin can take years to manifest itself. A bad burn received as a child can show up years later as skin cancer. A few random hours here and there "laying out in the yard" adds up.

I just have such a hard time swallowing people having such a "devil may care" attitude about the sun. With all the research done on skin cancer, how deadly it is...and how to AVOID it...and people still bake in the sun...or believe the garbage about "safe tanning beds" and how they are actually "good for you"...not true. It just isn't.

it's deadly. Malignant Melanoma is a vicious ravenous cancer. Once it takes hold it eats the person alive.

why would anyone subject themselves to this? I just don't understand.

okay. that's all I'll say about it.

I always start the spring by purchasing a Mystic tanning package to get me through the summer months. I went for my first tan of the season this morning, and it reminded me of some tips I have learned along the way.

First of all, try to find a place that has the "fancy" booth. There are two (at least) different booth models used for Mystic (and some knock-offs too). The fancier booth talks to you, and the quality of the misting is WAY better. Also, with the fancier booth you can request the color without bronzers. I personally hate the bronzers. They are just temporary color that tends to rub off on your clothes. I just get the clear spray and wait a few hours for it to show up.

Also, go to the Mystic tan website before your first session. They have great instructions about how to prepare your skin so that your tan will last longer. I think they even have a little video there that shows you what to expect.

Also, if any area is slighty darker than the rest you can use aerosol hairspray (or acetone polish remover I've been told) on a q-tip or cotton swab to lighten to the desired shade. And, be sure to apply the barrier cream liberally around your fingernails and toe nails.

Although the time in the booth is only 30 seconds you do have to allow some prep and clean up time. After showering and exfoliating it usually takes me about 15 minutes at the salon. Of course, the tan doesn't begin to appear for several hours (unless bronzer is included in the spray, which I hate).

For those that really don't care about having pale skin then all of this talk about tanning probably seems pretty silly, but for those of us who really prefer a nice summer tan I really suggest trying Mystic. It is the guilt-free way to have a nice glowing tan. (However, I do want to add that it is not meant to actually "protect" you from the sun. I still use sunblock when I am planning to spend time in the sun.)

Hi
Have a few questions
1st do the tan ( from mystic tan ) fade alot faster when you swim in pools ( chlorine ?)
2nd some of you say you put sunscreen but does it also fade the color ? do you have to buy special sunscreen specilay made for mystic tan or other kind of tanning lotion ( jergens .....)
thanks

I used to tan in the beds before vacation but stopped a few years ago. Now when I need color I go to my spa where they air brush tan. It's more expensive than the mystic that they also offer but it's a much better result. I've used before Disney and my last cruise and it held up pretty well even with going into the water quite a bit.

Melanie98

I love the look of airbrush too, but that is reserved for special occassions. It is just to pricey for me.

As for the Jergens, no it does not smell bad. I actually think it has a nice smell. It is really on the best (and affordable) tanning products I know of. I always get a free "starter" set of lotions when I buy a tanning package at the salon, and I honestly prefer to the Jergens over that expensive stuff.

Melanie98

I have heard that chlorine can make the tan fade faster, but I haven't noticed myself. However, I don't usually spend long lengths of time in the pool when I go swimming.

You really don't have to have any special kind of lotion for the Mystic tan. of course, they do offer special lotions at the salon, but they are not any better than Jergens. As for an SPF, anything is fine.

I have been going to the tanners recently to prepare for a trip to florida in a few weeks. I know everyone always bashes the tanners because of the risk for skin cancer, but if you are extremely pale like I am, having a base tan (not a really dark one, just a little bit!) isn't such a bad idea, a tan is your body's natural defense, after all.

You really can run into problems with excessive exposure to UV rays, but if, like me, you burn through spf 50, buliding up a little bit of a tan really helps, because burning your skin is so much more damaging and dangerous than building up a tan. If you don't really burn when you wear high spf, go with mystic tan, but if you fry every June on the beach like I do, a base tan+high spf is not such a bad idea.

The most important thing to protect your skin is not letting it burn. While tanning isn't the best thing for your skin, especially if you do it excessivly, burning is so much more damaging and much more dangerous, since it ups your risk of getting skin cancer by quite a bit each time you burn really badly.

No offense, but thinking that a "base tan" isn't damaging your skin simply isn't true. Any type of UV exposure is bad for your skin, whether you burn or not (or whether you get it from the natual sun or a tanning bed). There's no such thing as a "base tan" - tanning is just accumulated sun damage, and will lead to wrinkles, sun spots, and possibly skin cancer. Talk to any dermatologist - they'll tell you never to deliberately expose yourself to any kind of UV exposure (especially without sunscreen)! My brother-in-law who died of melanoma in his mid-20s lived in Florida, and rarely used sunscreen because he never burned - he simply didn't worry about it.

Everyone is different on their own level of exposure to the sun and the consequences of it. But your skin will see the sun at some point in your life :lmao: who cares if it's in a concentrated bed? If you only plan on doing it a few times KatieIsSoPR, I say go for it! Then protect yourself when you're actually in the sun.

Just to point out though, burning skin and tanning skin has the same level of no bueno! When you burn AND tan, what you're doing is frying your skin, the color is only different due to the pigment of your skin! Burning your skin just hurts TONS more.

I think everyone knows the consequences of tanning, as well as smoking, as well as bungee jumping, as well as flying on an airplane, as well as walking down the street. Everything has it's chance of something bad happening. Soon I'm going to get a lecture on running 5 miles a day because of something like... um... I could get hit by a car, IDK... I think the Jergens smells fine, but I find that I'm at a point now where it just won't go any darker? I have a slight color, but not too much. Better than nothing though.

I'd still like to try the Mystic Tan before my trip, and maybe beyond if I really like it! I'll have to check out some prices though, my funds are getting low!

I like the smell going on too but I notice after a while I feel i can smell a smell when it interacts with my skin i don;t like .....
I found this info on the website:::
As the product works to darken the skin, some people may develop an unfamiliar smell on their skin. This smell is a part of the skin darkening process. Some people have told us that it smells like they have spent a day at the beach, and their skin smells warm & toasty. The fragrance in JergensŪ natural glow express Body Moisturizers masks the smell for many of the consumers we tested on, but unfortunately, the smell is different from person to person and for a small group of consumers, they still find the smell comes through the fragrance.

that is what i can't stand....anyone find one that doesn;t do this ????

That is exactly the reason why I tan before I go. I also like to not look like a ghost either! lol
I am very fair skinned and would burn in a matter of a couple hours if I just used a self tanner. I'd rather tan before I go than be in pain while i'm there cause the FL sun burnt through my SPF...lol
I start tanning about two weeks or so before we leave and I go every other day. They start me at 5 minutes and work me up to 10 by the time we leave. And the best thing is if i'm not getting the coverage I want, like my legs are SO difficult to get color on, they will have me put one lotionwith bronzer on my legs and a regular one on the rest of my body.
And to tell you the truth, thats the only time I tan...lol When i'm going to disney!

Anybody do the mystic tan with tattoos? should I cover them up?

I have tats and use rub-on tanner all the time - they aren't affected by it at all. Actual tanning is worse for them than a fake tan paint. I also occassionally use a high pressure tanning bed and don't cover my ink up then either. I know I'll pay for that later and need to get the coloring redone  , but I doubt a faux tan will do anything to them. It's just lotion with pigment. :thumbsup2

I have a hint for those who "burn through" their sunscreen: use more. You should be using a shot glass full to cover your body (in a bathing suit). You need to reapply about every 4 hours, more often if you are sweating or swimming (even with waterproof) and also every time you dry off with a towel.

The Jergens one does not smell like the other self-tanners that I have tried! That is why I like it!

I use the tanning lotion from Bath & Body works. It give me great color and it's not orange (unless you keep using a lot of it). It's gradual coloring too, so it's not streaky like the instant stuff if.

I bought Jergens also and have been using it since Friday. I love it!!! It is so natural looking and so much better than tanning in my opinion. You get a nice looking tan fast without the risk.

I used to tell myself this, too. Until I got skin cancer at 21 years old!

Any color on one's skin is not a defense. The color shows up because the sun's harmful rays are toxic to the skin. The color isn't a defense, it's a warning.

One must choose: looks or health. Sunless is best. Get color from a bottle (or other source). Not sun. Not beds.

Not to mention how wrinkly and old tanning makes one.

My motto these days is that I'm vain enough to want to look nice later in life as well.

I love, love, LOVE Mystic Tan. I did it for my wedding and loved the natural results. I would do it now in a heartbeat, but I'm pregnant, and I don't know if that's okay or not. It is a great way to get some color before your trip.

Ask your doctor if you are concerned. I chose NOT to do it because some studies say that yes, it can affect the baby, other say no. I decided NOTHING was worth any risk. The same was said about teeth whitening: some studies said okay, others said no way. Anything that wasn't 100% fine I decided not to do.

Do what you and your doctor feel comfortable with.

Sunscreens are less effective after 1 year, so pitch the stuff from last summer and buy new each season. That might help.

My other suggestion is to buy swim shirts that have built in SPF (some up to 50+). They are cool (temp wise) and work wet or dry. They come in sizes from infant on up.

Happy swimming!

So true! Great post!

I learned my lesson (melanoma at 21 years old). I am happy to be pale (it used to be fashionable anyway!) :)

I plan on looking great in my later years (I'm pretty far from those now but plan on staying out of the sun AND using 50+ block forever!).

This might sound super crazy, but I have known people that have gone into the tanning salon to tan and have taken a light spf like maybe a 4 or 10. My dr even recommended it. I've worked in a tanning salon and I tan even though I know its not good for me, but the way I figure it I could walk around looking sick and pale or I could take the chance and tan in moderation and go on living my life. If I had to sit around worrying about what I could get cancer from I wouldn't be living my life. My dad had cancer and that is the moto he goes by so I go by it too. He told me not to sit around and worry about it because it'll consume me. He said just to be smart about stuff and wear sun screen and I'll be okay. Just a little tip though...don't let those tanning people in on the fact that you are taking a spf in the bed b/c if you put to much on and it gets on the acrylic of the bed it can ruin it. I'm not saying ruin the bed, but I'm saying if you apply just the right amount it shouldn't be a problem. I've done it and like I said I worked in a salon for almost five yrs. hth either way if you burn easily you there is still a good chance you could burn while there. I tan before hand and my face still gets a little pink. :goodvibes Either way enjoy your trip:thumbsup2

I just found an ad in the Sunday paper for a new product. L'Oreal Sublime Bronze Pro-Perfect Airbrush tanner.

Seems to be a spray of some sort. I have been using Aveeno cream tanner, when I remember. But this looked neat.

Sigh - Walmart is out of it of course. Has anyone tried it yet?

How awful can it be if Eva Longoria is the spokesmodel :rotfl2:

I don't know how tan you want to be, but my family gets all pasty and pale around this time of year. We have been using the Jergen's moisturizer and everyone has a nice healthy glow, not unnatural or orange at all. I have not tried the one for the body or the accelerated one. We use the facial one for medium skin tones even though we are a little fair. You must use it everyday and don't forget your neck. It is very inexpensive and there are often coupons. It is safe as well. Try it for a few days and see if you like it. We Do!

I like Jergens as well. It does work. But I just can't get past the smell. It is pleasant compared to some - but I still find that all of them have a strong smell. Guess there's no way around that.

I love the Dove lotion that is like the Jergens. I personally did not like the smell of the Jergens and the smell of the Dove is different. I just started putting it on again since warmer weather is coming.

I live in Florida and I'm pale year round, unless I get a sunburn that turns into a tan. There are a lot of pale people at disney and as long as you wear sunscreen you should be fine. Whatever you think looks best though, but if you decide to skip the tanning as long as you bring sunscreen it should be okay.

Now which shade of jergens would you recommend. During the summer i usually buy the face tanner in light. Does everyone do the dark color or start on the light and then the dark daily?

i just started using the Jergens last week and it works well. I don't think it smells terrible. It smells like sunscreen to me, which is good b/c it puts me in the Disney state of mind

i am using the one for pale skin. While i'm pale i'm probably a little bit more toward medium. I just wanted to be safe and not turn out looking like a cheeto.

I've tried reading all the posts on this thread. I don't think anyone mentioned the fact that the tanning booth tan you get (to prevent sunburn when you get to FL) is not the same UV rays you actually get from the real sun. So if you're tanning in a bed so you won't burn in the real sun you're actually harming your skin 2x.
I burned nearly every vacation growing up. Did the sunblock and tshirts in the pool. Did you know that a white tshirt in water is equal to SPF 4? And my parents thought that was a brilliant idea! At least they tried.
I did Mystic tanning for my wedding and liked the results. I turn a funny color in a tanning booth. A weird reddish color (not burned just funny red) that to me looks like my body is saying "I don't like this!" I don't go anymore. I also use Jergan's and have used Sublime L"oriel tanners before.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Sally Hansan Sprays. I get them at my hairdressers. If you need a tan on the quick you just spray it on at home. I use it for my shoulders if I'm going strappless for the night. They really look nice!
