Hello!
I'm planning our Disneyland/Vegas trip for December 2008 :thumbsup2 And i'm looking into staying either at the New York New York Hotel or the Luxor Hotel for about the same price. Anyone has a an opinon on which one is "better"? we are 2 adults in our early 30s....
Thank you!

The differences aren't that great. NYNY has a somewhat more central location. Luxor has a much better pool/spa (which won't be a big deal in December).
When in December are you going? The couple weeks before Christmas are the cheapest in Vegas. Fantastic deals will come along, but you won't necessarily see them until October or November. I wouldn't lock into anything now. Get a fully refundable reservation and wait for great deals later.

This site has a good rundown of each hotel:
http://www.cheapovegas.com/vegas_casino_full.php?hotel_id=1040
http://www.cheapovegas.com/vegas_casino_full.php?hotel_id=1033
I prefer NY/NY for the atmosphere and the interesting food options although they don't have a buffet. We used to like the Luxor Pharoah's Feast buffet quite a bit, but haven't been there in a few years and I notice cheapovegas refers to it by a different name, and gives it a negative review.
NY/NY has a great roller coaster, but it costs $14, so see if you can get a package that includes tix. We stayed there recently and they didn't provide tix even though we had an upgraded room.

I would vote NYNY.

Thanks for your answers :thumbsup2
ZekeKelso: We would fly in on Thanskgiving weekend (Nov 29), do you think it will be incredibly busy? I definetly will not book right away and hope that better deals come along!
We also found the Monte Carlo for about the same price, any opinions on that hotel?
Thanks again! :)

Are you considering the Luxor's pyramid or tower rooms? The tower rooms are much nicer and seem to be more roomier then the pyramid rooms. Plus if you don't get a high level floor you can get some casino noise. NY NY has nicer rooms but lot of people say they are on the small side. Overall as far as hotel quality goes NY NY has a higher quality by just a tad.

def check the various code sites, we were able to book pyramid room pkg @ Luxor for far less than AAA rate @ Excalibur
also, sign up for email specials, we got a survey to fill out with additional codes before they were released to public

We stayed at the Monte Carlo in last August and loved it. The pool area is great, although I doubt that will matter in Nov/Dec.

I've stayed at all 3 you have mentioned here and out of these 3, I like NY NY the best. It's the only of these 3 that we would return to. The great thing about the Las Vegas hotels is that there is something for everyone.

I stayed at NYNY and really enjoyed it. It had a better atmosphere inside than a lot of casinos. It was more interesting - set up as though you're walking down a NY street, with bars and restaurants along the streets. A lot of different restaurants and nightlife (Irish pub, piano bar, coyota ugly). A large variety of food choices, from the casual grab-a-slice-of-pizza to a nice sit down Italian restaurant, and lots of stuff inbetween.
One of the drawbacks is that it can be confusing to find your room if you don't go to the right set of elevators. Our room was on the end of one tower, so it was quite a hike from the elevator. The room was very nice, though, and quiet. No complaints at all, I would stay there again.

We just got back from Vegas and stayed at the Luxor...when searching for our "first-time trip", NYNY wasn't even a consideration for us. It just didn't have anything that made us think that we wanted to stay there...
AFTER staying at the Luxor and spending most of our time in NYNY (because it was our favorite place)...I will definitely be staying at NYNY on our next trip! :goodvibes
The Luxor was OK...theming was interesting and the rooms were clean, but there wasn't much there to keep us there. NYNY, on the other hand, was a lot more fun to explore and had way more interesting options for dining. You could get everything from a hotdog or a slice of pizza...to an amazing steak dinner!
We loved NYNY!!! For the same price...I would DEFINITELY stay there! :thumbsup2

Thank you Minnierocks (I also think that Minnie DOES rock, she is my all time favorite!!!!:thumbsup2 )
My only concern about STAYING at the NY NY is the possible noise from the roller coaster? Do you think it would be an issue?
Thanks!

I don't know on that one...but all of these places are HUGE! I would think that there had to be rooms that are not close to the roller coaster. My sister stayed at NYNY on a previous trip and she didn't mention anything about noise from the coaster. She really loved NYNY! Also, check operating hours on the coaster...It may not be running when you are sleeping, so there wouldn't be any noise...
Since we were staying at the Luxor...we weren't in any of the rooms...
Have a great trip! :goodvibes

My only concern about STAYING at the NY NY is the possible noise from the roller coaster? Do you think it would be an issue? In our two stays at NYNY we've had rooms on the north side, overlooking the pool and the first chain lift and just a part of the first drop. We didn't have a problem with noise. Not so sure about the south side where all of the interesting twists and turns and probably screams occur.

Vegas during any holiday is CROWDED please do not wait too long to book your trip. The normal number of tourists during the holidays is around 250,000. The airport is packed, but moves very well. I would suggest staying at Monte Carlo if you can get a good rate. There is so much to see and do in Vegas, you will want to stay as far center strip as you can.
I have friends that have stayed at New York New York and ended up staying near the coaster. (remember the coaster runs through the inside of the NYNY too) They complained about noise and told me it ran past midnight during the weekends and holidays.
Wherever you deceide I hope you have a wonderful vacation. The weather should be beautiful during December. During one of my December visits it was shirtsleeve weather. :thumbsup2

curious, did you stay in the pyramid or towers @ Luxor?
we booked a pkg with dining credits, imax, king tut, etc. since our teenage son will be with us; thought it would keep him occupired. Did you have kids with you?
friends stayed @ NYNY last summer & said common areas where so crowded it was difficult to navigate (we plan on hitting everything in the general area including NYNY so i'll guess we'll increase the crowd lol) & that their room was very noisy due to coaster.popcorn::

We have booked from Dec 7-10 at the Monte Carlo for $69 a night. The one night deposit is fully refundable if we run into a better deals in the next few months. Thanks for confirming that depending on where your room is, it can get noisy at the NY NY, I just dont want to chance it! Thank you all for yoru replies and opinions!:thumbsup2

When we stayed at the NYNY our room overlooked the coster at the front by the loop section and we didn't notice any noise from it at all. I thought the hotel was really nice for the price we paid and I though the rooms were a good size too. From the 3 hotels you mentioned I would choose the NYNY because I like the theaming there plus it is in a better location being that bit further up the strip. The strip is longer than what you think at the Monte Carlo is at the very start of it.

We stayed in the pyramid rooms...that's where my husband wanted to stay. He thought they would be cool. There really wasn't anything wrong with the rooms...they were clean and comfortable. The tower rooms have been recently renovated, but the pyramid rooms have not, so the carpet is older...but the rooms were fine. Housekeeping did a great job!
It was a "couple only" trip, so no kids...Again the theming was fun at the Luxor, but we just found that we really enjoyed the atmosphere at NYNY. It just seemed like there was so much more to experience there. We loved the cobblestone streets, where we enjoyed dessert and coffee. We ate a fabulous steak dinner one night, and had great Mexican fare on another night. Two of the restaurants that we had planned on trying at the Luxor were closed...one for good and one for repairs.
In the Luxor, we just kind of walked around for a bit the first night and really didn't see anything that we wanted to do...so we headed into the Mandalay Bay shops (they are connected) and walked around there for a bit. We aren't big "clubbers" and we wanted to experience things so we didn't just sit and gamble. We ended up at NYNY the first night, and just really enjoyed it. We didn't find it really crowded, but when we were there...there weren't big crowds anywhere.
Please understand, there wasn't anything wrong with the Luxor...it just wouldn't be my top choice. We liked NYNY better! I'm sure that you will have a great trip. If the theming interests your son, and you have passes to do all those things...you might find that you really enjoy the Luxor! :goodvibes

Hmm...now I'm adding NYNY to our list for our trip in Dec (but I'm booking a refundable rate no matter what, in hopes of a better rate).
