Has anyone ever rented there own boat in St. Thomas to tour St. John "off the beat and path". We are going on Magic April 13-20 and are thinking about renting a 25' power boat to tour around the islands in. Any idea what sort of boating experience is required to rent a boat in St. Thomas????

My husband and I are boaters. We have not seen any boat rentals. We do read boat magazines and for a week you can charter a bareboat. It is more expensive than the Disney cruise. I also think from what I read a 25' boat would be too small for down there. We have a 34' Sea Ray and I know people use them down there around the islands but I feel even that length is a bit small for cruising around the waters. The water can get a bit rough for my standards but they consider 4' waves smooth. Maybe somebody else has seen boat rentals. Kathy

I seem to recall reading a trip report from somebody who rented a boat at St Thomas. They were able to do so at the marina at Red Hook (the eastern end of St Thomas... the area where the ferrys leave for St John). Don't know anything about cost, experience required, or if they have a web site. I'll check into that. I do remember this person highly recommending the experience.
