Congrats, Mary and OM on the milestones!

Maggie and I were busy watching "The Little Princess." The guys were watching "Harry Potter." I guess Shirley Temple was too girly for them ;) I'm having fun watching the classic musical movies with Maggie - she's a huge Fred Astaire fan, too! I should probably introduce her to more of Gene Kelly's movies, She's only seen "Singing in the Rain" - try as I might, while I enjoy Gene Kelly, I'm not a big fan...

On another topic - I'm feeling a bit old - the newest American Girl Doll in the History series is from the 1970s...

Stacey, I'm glad you were able to enjoy some time out...I'm sorry you're uncomfortable today, though...

The furniture is moved back into the family room, as soon as the doors arrive for the entertainment center, I'll get John to take a few pictures - it looks nice. Clean and clutter free - for the moment. Now, onto the dining room and living room...

Thanks! My point, exactly... :lmao:

On another topic - I'm feeling a bit old - the newest American Girl Doll in the History series is from the 1970s...

So far, I have been able to avoid the whole American Girl doll thing. Emily had no clue what they were and she has 2 knock-off dolls from Target. Yesterday she was playing with her dolls and she asked me what an American Girl Doll was. I asked where she heard of one. She said that some girls at school were talking about them. An American Girl Bistro just opened in our mall. Evidentally you can take your dolls there to have their hair done. You can also have lunch there ... or birthday parties at $450 for 8 kids (that's $56.25/child)!!! I explained to her that an Am Girl doll is the same size as her dolls but a LOT more expensive.

Stacey, glad to hear that you were able to get out & about. Take it easy though.

Our chuckle for today:

While helping Maggie figure out in which state Cincinnati was located, we searched on the Cincinnati tourism website for clues. Clicking on the contact us, section, the address would tell Maggie the state. Imagine our surprise when the Cincinnati tourism office isn't in Cincinnati, nor is it in Ohio....It's in Kentucky... :lmao:

Well friends, I have to admit that this surgery was more than I bargained for. I wasn't expecting (I must be really naive) nearly this much pain...since they've put on the hard cast. I am just trying to get through one day at a time.

Having Megan back home has been a huge help. Jared is in school all day and Jordan is....well....she's pretty cute but that's about the only good thing I have to say about her right now.

So this is what Megan did for my cast.....she went out to get one more thing to add to the whole "outfit" and I'll post another picture when she's done with that.

Good Morning All!

Quiet morning for me - Maggie's sleeping over at a friend's house. John and Mike are working on the tile in the living room...Almost done! :cool1: It's the last quiet Saturday for a looonnnng time - Maggie starts Lacrosse practice next week.

Stacey, I'm sorry you are still in a lot of pain - love the cast!

I'm glad KT got a call back - HSM certainly brings out the hopeful in mass! (But, do they have talent???)

A Quick Update on the friend with the kidney transplant - he's been home for a week now! :woohoo: Both he and his sister (donor) are doing well! He's still being carefully monitored twice a week... But, so far all - all is well and going! :woohoo:

mickeymo

I think I'm having Disney Cruise withdrawal - I had a dream last night the Magic stopped in Galveston and we could tour the ship up until sail away. - Mike was left on the ship as they were pulling up anchor - I'm trying to get back on to find him....I was in the process of trying to buy a cabin, instead of having to get off in Key West when I found him. He was walking around with his school backpack-, not at all upset or worried that he was left behind... I woke up before I found out what cabin we were in... (assuming we could stay.... :lmao: )

Must have been the two glasses of wine with pizza last night... :lmao:

Wow, Monica, wish I had dreams like that after a couple of glasses of wine! I just don't sleep, guess I could daydream.

Congrats to KT on the call back. Had to go see who Kelsey is, does KT play piano?

Alicia is finally making her debut next week. Took two years of trying to fix her schedule to get her into the Theatre Performance class at her school. Which is the main reason she wanted to go to the school. Anyway, they are doing some one acts for their first show this year, and she has the lead in one. There is kissing involved, should be interesting.

Actually there was quite a lot of talent at the auditons and call backs. So much so the director announced she may just double cast all of the leads because there were so many talented kids. That's cool.

And yes, KT has taken piano lessons for 4 years. :) So that helps. :)

All teasing aside, I do have to agree it will be interesting. John was considering auditioning for our fall musical 1776. Needing 25 men, the director was strongly urging him to step out from behind the sound board.

Anyway, casting John poses some difficulty, two roles are for tall men - Thomas Jefferson and the Scotsman. Even though Jefferson would be a huge role, I wasn't sure I could attend the shows; Jefferson has a kissing scene... And I didn't sing well enough to be cast as his wife...

In the end, John didn't audition because the stage manager will be out of town for most of the run of the show - so, even though he has a sound board operator to take his place, he will be taking care of the stage manager stuff...

justmestace
09-22-2007, 02:18 PM
Until you all mentioned it, I hadn't thought about how hard that would be...either to watch one of my kids with a kissing scene and most especially my husband. I seriously don't think I could go watch that.

I think I got enough sleep the last two days to finally make myself feel a little better. I'd been pushing it by staying awake during the days or only cat-napping in the recliner. Forced myself to go rest in bed and it's amazing the difference it makes.

Megan had a tough time painting my toes since I couldn't get them into a good position. Not the best job, but pretty cute. Actually, pretty obnoxious, but I don't care, I'm making fun of a not fun situation.

Okay....I have something to share....and you all are the first to know.
Some of you may have known this, some maybe not...but Megan and Peter have been separated since last September, and their divorce was final a month or so ago.
Well......she has known this man named Dave for several years. Dave lives in the Columbus, Ohio area. They've become quite serious about eachother over the past several months and are now engaged.
They will be married on May 31, 2008.

:bride: :groom: He's 31, she's almost 26. He's a great guy with a really good job and seems to be just right for her, and hopefully she for him, also.

They plan on being married in the backyard of the home he just bought, something nice but simple. His first marriage.

And I'd love to see my Ohio friends while I'm up there, if at all possible!

I know I should have said something as things were progressing, but I was having a hard enough time gripping it all myself. It's been a long year, to say the least.
She and Pete are still really good friends and see eachother often, they just realized that they weren't right for eachother and neither was very mature.
I think Dave's maturity will be good for Megan. He has a great way of "grounding" her.

Virgil said he's about 2 1/2 hours away, and as long as it doesn't interfere with the June 8th cruise plans, they're coming. I'd love it if you all came too....I DO afterall, get to have some of my friends attend....or if not at the wedding, maybe one day the week before or after.

Well, if we aren't invited, we'll crash the party anyway! HA! No, seriously, don't feel obligated just because we're close. I understand it's a small gathering in a backyard, and that's totally fine with us. But we would like to see you earlier that week if we could. Or after the wedding. :)

Congrats to KT! Does this mean dancing? That would be a fun show.

Alicia's school is doing a school-wide musical. They have a lot of good singers, and she really doesn't sing. But they are doing "A Funny thing happened on the way to the forum" and I hope she will try out for the comedy lead. She could "sing funny".

Wow, Stacey has been busy.

Hey Stacey - we are less than 3 hours, and if it means visiting with friends I will be happy to travel into O**O.

Gregg said he is coming invited or not (that is just how he is)
He also said thank you all for the Birthday Wishes. He spent the day cheering U of M on, as they beat Penn State - what an awsome game!!!

Here are our family pics that we took a couple of weeks ago. I'm happy with the clothing color choices that I made. These aren't the greatest but hopefully you'll get the idea. We no longer have a scanner so I had to take a picture of a picture. The real photos certainly look a lot better than these.

Stacey, are you going to be able to put weight on your foot once you get the walking cast? Has time flown that quickly already? I thought it was going to be LONG time before you could put any weight on it.

Good luck!

Angie, you're right, I think the color choices were great! I can't believe how much the girls have grown. They're both darling!!

Jay and I were just discussing what it might be like when I first try to put weight on that foot and leg. I know that when they were putting the cast on, they told me that I'd go in and get this one off, they'd fit and adjust the walking one, and then I'd go in and "work with" the doctor for a bit. I have a feeling I'd better take a couple of pills before we get there.
So anyway, no, Jay doesn't think I'll quite be waltzing out of the doc's office like I'd been hoping...so he's still taking me up there and then back out, in the wheelchair. We're going to have to be darn certain that I can bear weight on it before I even can think of using that scooter.

Happy Friday everyone!

Asking for a little pixie dust for great weather for my parents. They left yesterday afternoon on a Carnival cruise from New Orleans to Cozumel. This is their first-ever cruise so I'm hoping they enjoy themselves. I should have taken control of their whole cruise though. They sounded interested in doing an excursion to the ruins but were too nervous to book it online. Now I'm afraid that they are probably out of luck. I told them that as soon as they got on board they needed to go find out if there were any more openings on the excursion. They would be too nervous to do anything not "sanctioned" by the cruise line.

WOW, just got caught up on all the reading. Things have been pretty busy lately and I haven't had time to keep up.

First off:

CONGRATS KT

2nd: Stacey -- I am so happy for Megan. I remember talking with you in Phoenix and you were a little worried for her.

3rd: Angie those are some pretty fine pictures. How exciting for your friends.

4th: OM Family - have a great time in CA. Wish we could have met up with you

We are going to see the Christian Band Casting Crowns tonight. We are all excited. The promoter gave us free tickets. Needless to say, we have been working with him. We normally have our college commencement on the first Friday in December. Well, they were trying to get Michael W. Smith's Christmas concert in the same venue on the same night. We ended up moving our commencement up one night so they could use it on Friday night. What is even more exciting though, is that Smitty has agreed to be our commencement speaker on Thursday night. He is going to talk about service to the community. Kind of exciting.

We have ordered Dale's senior photos and spent way more than we should have. I will find out tomorrow when we will have them back. I will post when we have them.

Ashley has her first swim meet of the season in Las Cruces tomorrow and Sunday. the good thing now that she is 13 is that we swim in the afternoons, so no more early mornings for us. WOOHOO

Will post more tomorrow as to how the concert was.

Concert was fantastic. John Waller opened with 3 songs, then the group Leeland sang about 5 songs and then Casting Crowns came out and played about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Concert started at 7:30 and we just got home at 11:30. The whole thing was AWESOME. Besides just playing the songs, there was a lot of worship going on and it left me feeling so blessed.

Tonight was only the 2nd night of the new "Alter and the Door" tour and I think it will be a huge success. They played all my favorites, plus the new tracks off the new CD. Well off I go to bed. Busy day tomorrow

Hey all! I see Mary has been keeping you up to date on my adventures. I can get to email on Mike's iphone but not the dis very well.

We are having fun. Surreal to be in a place that is similar, but so different from what we know. Even just finding a bathroom is hard. At WDW we know the closest bathroom locations no matter where we are! ;) We're having fun seeing the differences in the rides. Even rides that are the "same" (i.e. Splash Mtn) are very different. Nice that it's not an exact carbon copy of each other.

LOVING that we can walk everywhere. I'm definitely getting my exercise. Of course, I'm also eating a LOT! :) Goofy's Kitchen was PHENOMENAL! ;) Today we're going to eat at the Plaza Inn.

Btw, I may be upgrading to the iPhone.....Mike was trying to talk me into it a few weeks ago, but I'm in a contract with Disney Mobile....well, they are FOLDING! So I'll be in the market for a new cell phone and coverage by the end of the year! Can you believe they are folding? I got an email about it shortly before I waked by the Disney Mobile kiosk at Downtown Disney! I wanted to go up to the CM selling phones and say "uh....do you realize Disney Mobile is folding??" ;) :lmao:

Ok, gotta go. We slept in today after a late night last night and we just finished room service breakfast.

Karen -- glad you guys are having a great time at DL. Sure wish we were there. We are still planning on going in June when the cruisers get off the ship, hoping it doesn't interfere with Dale's HS graduation. It is nice at DL to never have to move your car.

We are home from the swim meet. It was our first meet with the older kids and man did it go by fast. Ashley swam in 3 events and a relay. I didn't enter her in any others because the events are right on top of each other. She was swimming in heats with all ages over 13. Matter of fact one event even had a 41 year old woman. She did pretty good. She was third overall of all ages in the breaststroke. The top 4 places were all 13 year olds and then the others were in the older age groups. She got 9th overall and 5th in her age group in the 100 back and dropped almost 5 seconds from last year. Her 200 IM wasn't what it should have been, but she only had about 5 minutes rest between that and the 100 back, but still placed 8th. So, pretty good for her first meet with the big kids.

Glad we are home and I am pooped. Off to do some laundry and then to bed.

Team lost, team lost, team lost - boooooo hoooooooo

But otherwise the weekend was great....I cannot wait until Food and Wine --- pant - pant - ponly 2.5 more days to go..............

Finally made it into the Garden on Saturday. Decided not to dive as we had 2 birthday parties Saturday, one we were hosting....Trimmed back the path to the front of the house, but way more to do. Turns out it was a bad weekend to dive - seas ranged from 6 to 13 feet - No way!!!!!!!!

And the wind, wow - we existed the resturant on Sat. night and it was as if we were in a storm, or hurricane....wheeeeeee...

The first party was a neighbor's 1 year old...he was cute, with Elmo and friends decorating the house....

And Sunday more rain, and more wind.....After Church we just had to see Remy again before Food and Wine.....it was showing at a dinner theatre. nothing like a glass of red wine watching the movie. Errands and a trip to Mother's followed before heading home to complete chores.

Still lots more to do before we leave....

Cannot wait...(like Stacey, I am impatient, but for other reasons).

Hey Stace, best girlfriend now looks like you, 'cept it is her elbow....yowy....she shattered it in 3 places...

Is the Ohio Mouse family still in CA?

I'm happy to report that my parents seemed to have a good time on their cruise. :woohoo: I was really worried. They liked their stateroom even though it was in the back of the ship ... Mom said it was quiet. They were able to book the tour of the Tulum ruins only to find out the night before that it was cancelled. They got off the ship & found someone to take them on a tour of Cozumel. They said that the ship offered the same type of excursion but they think they got more out of this one. They said that the guy was very personable, took them all over & explained a lot to them. I'm so proud of them ... you have to understand, my mom is a very nervous person & doesn't like to make decisions ... so this was a big deal for her! She said that they were very impressed with their wait-staff & room hosts. She said that their waiter even came over to wait on them at open seating lunch one day. She said that he knew exactly what they wanted to eat, etc. I'm sure that made her feel special. Hopefully they'll be ready to cruise/vacation again.

Irene, wonder if my parents were feeling same effects that you felt this weekend? They said that they seas in the Gulf were VERY rough yesterday.

You had it pegged well, Virgil. I came home, took my pills and tried to sleep.

Still not functioning well so I'll make it quick for tonight. I was a little shocked today. No walking for me. They took off the cast, removed (ouch) the stitches, said it all looks great....but they put me in something I'd never seen before.
It's called an AirCast. It's like a Cam Walker, but has valves so that we can pump it full of air to make it even more tight and secure.

The shock...and the worst part....still NO WALKING at all...for two more weeks.
I KNOW the doctor had told me 3 weeks non weight-bearing, then 3 more in a Cam Walker. I just am so surprised by this...and sadly disappointed. But I have been giving myself an attitude adjustment all afternoon....this too, shall pass. Still, that will be 5 weeks of not walking. They don't even want me to use a walker. Nothing. The choices were crutches (and now that they know how clumsy I am, they nixed those), wheelchair, or the knee walker...if I can manage to be coordinated to use it. So far, I haven't been very successful at it.
Anyway...that's where I stand. One legged still.

Been working on my "attitude adjustment" this morning....and dreaming about being as far away from this day as I can be. In other words, I keep concentrating on the next cruise. :)

I think I might know why I'm not being allowed to walk on it yet, not sure, just a theory. But the surgeon had told Jay after my surgery (which had taken longer than expected) that there was a lot of nerve damage, the nerves in my foot had adhered to scar tissue and it took the doctor a lot more time to remove that, and try to get the nerves all back where they belong.
So maybe...maybe that's why it's longer. I don't know, only a guess.

Stacey, Sorry to hear your treatment isn't as easy as you had hoped. :(

We're still in CA. Moved from DL to the Hotel del Coronado.

This place isn't Disney...

In our first hour, we found out parking is $20 a day PLUS there is a $24 "resort fee," we had to call security to open our connecting rooms (they wouldn't open without a key), we found black kinky hairs in the bathroom, there was trash in the corner of the room, and we had to call maintenance to fix the toilet (it wouldn't stop running).

Luckily DVC is picking up the base price of the room! Otherwise we'd be staying at the Comfort Inn!

(btw, you know what the hotel del looks like? Like the grand floridian? yeah, except our room is in the 1970's looking addition. Not even connected to the main building.) Ah well, beats being in Ohio!

Sorry you're in the "newer" section...never have stayed in that part. Did you find the hallway, downstairs (main building) leading out toward the pool, that has pictures of all the old stars and famous people who've stayed there?

Garry, would that be the Bibbity Bobbity Boutique (what fun), or the place where they sell the Roxy swimsuits? We didn't see her in August, will look again in a few weeks. Is she enjoying the program?

Stacey, sorry to hear you are not walking yet. As long as you can get on that cruise ship in December, all is well, right? And with the half the pain of before!

Alicia's play opened last night, and closes tonight. She did so well! Got lots of laughs, girl owns the stage. I did lots of treading of the boards at her age, but I don't remember being quite so confident.

What a disappointment, to book at the Del and get put out in the boonies. Not even in the haunted part! Well now we know not to waste the points.

Don't you just hate it when life get's in the way of DISing.

Actually, I'm just sick of the computer by the time I get home that the last thing I want to do is spend more time on it. Sorry.

I didn't realize how long it has been since I posted until I got an email from a friend in South FL.

So I thought I would at least give one post before Lisa and I head off to Chicago. This is marathon weekend. I wish we could have more time, but oh well. We have Friday and Saturday to play so we will make the best of it.

I just wish Mary and Mark would cool it down. It's not fun running a marathon is record heat. I did that in West Palm and still hold Irene personally responsible.

Nice to "see" you, Sir James!

Diana.....I would have given my left leg to have seen Alicia's play. Okay, sorry, that joke is old. Truly, I really wish I could have seen it, I bet she was fantastic!! :thumbsup2

Recovery has hit a small bump in the road. The larger incision, the one at the heel area, has now completely opened up. It looks like the Grand Canyon. Finally got through to the doctor's office and they want Megan to try to apply new steri-strips today, and then bring me in tomorrow.
Will see what the doc has to say about it then.

Diana - it is the princess makeover boutique. She loves it. She works primarily there or in watches and jewlery, both at World of Disney. She is having a lot of fun.
I didn't realize you were at WDW in Aug, we were there visiting Vanessa the 8-15th

Glad that Alicia's show went well. Post pics if you have any.

So...the foot is freshly bandaged, new steri-strips, strict orders to keep it elevated MORE than it had been.....Jay has ideas for that..:rolleyes1 ....and all should be fine if we can keep the swelling to a minimum. I have to face the fact that this scar will be wide and ugly....but at least the one that is more visible (the one on my calf) is still very thin and nicely closed and in a year or two won't even be noticeable.
Apparently, if it hadn't gotten so swollen, it wouldn't have had all that excess fluid looking for an escape route, and wouldn't have opened up like it did.
But thanks to one of my very good doctor friends, I already knew all that.
The good news is that it isn't infected and the idea is to keep it that way.

Unexpected Bonus!!! It rained all night and up until 7:00 this a.m. so, Maggie's 9:30 am lacrosse practice was canceled. Go figure, it's bright and sunny from 8:00am on...

It's the airshow at Ellington Field behind our house. Lots of noise, planes and traffic today...what fun! Canadian Snowbirds are the headliner act this year...:woohoo:

Mike slept over at a friend's house and they are on site at the air show. 1st time for Mike, we usually watch from the house, parallel to the runway - we have a great view and no porta potties...:lmao:

John's moving lights around in the sanctuary at church, and Maggie and I had a pajama morning watching American in Paris...

All the tile is finally finished. John finished up the closet and the laundry room - no washing this weekend! :cheer2: the "only" thing left to finish the painting and the baseboards...

Sounds like one of those rare, lazy, wonderful mornings, Monica!!

Don't forget to post more pics when you're done.

I'm being lazy this morning. I got up when Jay did and had my coffee and am getting ready to place a call to both my surgeon and my primary care doctors...in hopes that one of them will call me back on a Saturday. The more I thought about it last night, the more I realized that a lot of people who've had this type of surgery can't just lay on their back with their foot in the air for 5 weeks. There HAS to be some kind of pill that I can take to get rid of this swelling. Call me impatient...or a bad patient....whatever.....but I refuse to take this laying down.

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Sense of humor STILL intact. :thumbsup2

#1....I don't drink DIET. It isn't good for you. Icky chemicals.

#2....Monica's right, I'd LOVE the company so don't threaten me with that.

#3....I have instructed the ibuprofen to only seep into MY half of the liver, okay??? Well, actually, I've instructed it to only head for my foot....but I don't think it's listening.

I talked to the on-call doc with my surgeon's group this morning and he said go ahead and take the ibuprofen for now, but to go see my doc on Tuesday. Can't go Monday since that's when my guy is in surgery. I was really hoping that they could send me out a prescript for something that might work better, but this guy said "I don't do feet".......:confused3 :confused3 Does it matter what body part it is?? I'm thinking that should be first year Med school stuff.

Okay FINE. Heading for the living room to hang my foot from the ceiling fan. Which reminds me of the time when I was about 6 yrs old and our fresh Christmas tree wouldn't fit in the base and my dad didn't own a saw...wouldn't have known how to use one if he DID have one. So he honest to goodness tied it to the chandelier to make it stand up straight.
To this day, that story makes me laugh my be-hind off.

Sadly no. It was mid-80's when we went to chuch this morning (7 am Mass) and has now gone up to 90. Not good weather for running but I would think Jim would have an edge on many of the locals since he has trained in hotter weather.

Nope, no cable TV - I wasn't happy the National League games are on TBS while the American League games are on Fox - not to mention the 9:00pm Central start times I couldn't stay awake for an entire game...Of course, it isn't exactly exciting to read the text of the game... And everyone else was happy because I wasn't screaming and yelling at the TV...:lmao:

If by the boonies you mean away from the craziness of Waikiki yes it is. The Ko Olina area is beautiful and I would see it as the type of resort you don't need to go places from. Kind of like Vero. We were so busy we didn't get to spend as much time around the resort as we would have liked but with DVC I can see us doing some shopping, cooking a number of our meals (including grilling in the evening) and just relaxing and enjoying the resort. Plus Oahu is an easy jumping point for day trips to the other islands.

I see your point and I agree. In the case of Hawaii or even some of the homes/resorts we've looked at in the Caribbean...the further away from the hustle and bustle, the better. The sad part is that it won't be long until the "growth" (hustle and bustle) finds the "boonies". KWIM?

Well, Matt & I ran in Disney's Race for the Taste 10k today. This is my first 10k, so I am happy that I finished. Matt is a good son. He ran his race than came back to run the last 1/4 mile with me. It was fun to cross the finish line with him.

It was fun to see the backstage areas of Disney, but I was surprised how crowded the event was. I thought it would "thin" out after a mile or so, but it was crowded most of the race. It was finally better when were in Epcot because the running area was larger.

Since Matt & I were up at 3:45 to drive to the race, we have spent the afternoon sleeping. Lisa sent us a picture of Jim sleeping in Chicago after his Marathon run. So, I guess it was a lazy afternoons for all of us.

Jim & co, check this one out:

Runner who dies had heart condition, officals say
Maraton Death not heat-related, medical examiner says

An autopsy found the Michigan police officer who collapsed during the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon died from a heart condition not related to the heat, a spokeswoman for the Cook County medical examiner's office said today.

Chad Schieber, 35, of Midland, died of mitral valve prolapse, a condition where the valve between the chambers doesn't close properly. Schieber collapsed around the 19-mile mark.

Also, marathon officials asserted Monday that they never ran out of water during the race, but said volunteers did have trouble refilling cups fast enough for runners.

The marathon was stopped early because of oven-like temperatures. More than 300 people sought medical treatment for heat-related conditions.

Many runners reported that they found no water on the course and that they had to buy their own or rely on people on the sideline to supply them.

Carey Pinkowski, executive director of the marathon, said runners often took five to seven glasses of water and poured them over themselves to cool down, quickly depleting the supplies.

"That's something I've never seen in the 17 years I've been doing this," he said.

At least 25 people remained hospitalized this morning with heat-related conditions. The race was cut short for the first time in its history due to the excessive temperatures.

Nine of those hospitalized were in serious to critical condition, according to officials from five of the seven Chicago hospitals that treated runners Sunday.

Fire officials said about 315 runners were taken from the course by ambulance. City and suburban ambulances took 146 people to hospitals, most in good condition, and the rest were taken to hospitals or medical aid stations along the route by private ambulances, officials said.

The race was stopped about 3½ hours after the start gun on an abnormally sweltering autumn day, amid complaints of insufficient water for more than 35,000 runners from around the world.

What a cover up! This city is so focused on getting those damned olympics they're willing to outright lie, I see. There are currently over 125 replies to this article in tribune's forum all from either runners and even some of the volunteers outright saying that many stations were completely out of supplies. Considering the absolutely horrid weather conditions the organizers should have been better prepared with those supplies and other cooling methods in place. There were runners going into convenience stores and people using their own hoses to help cool the runners.

Interesting article - I remember in the late 1980s the race was at the end of October/early November and more often than not held in sleet and or snow, which brought another whole set of problems to runners. heck, October in Chicago can be extremely warm...(I purposely didn't get married in June, because I wanted it to be cooler - October 14, 1989 the temps were in the mid to upper 80s... Warm Octobers are not new...)

The Chicago Marathon is well known and big draw marathon in the international marathon circuit - the lack of planning and foresight will probably hurt, regardless of official statements...

On the other hand, because organizers of races want to draw more entrants, the rolling closures of the race course are lengthening, making marathons more accessible to walkers, joggers and the weekend athletes. Many people are ill equipped to handle the stress 26 miles (even 13) places on a body. Then add a change in temperatures, if a body isn't used to training in heat and/or humidity (or cold) then the body is even more stressed. Even the most conditioned elite athletes can be in trouble if they haven't trained in similar conditions close to race time...

Not at all shifting the blame on the runner who died - but, the increase in heat related emergencies doesn't surprise me - the poor planning does...(ETA - poor planning of the race organizers...)

Maraton Death not heat-related, medical examiner says

Well, now I know I'll never run a marathon. After all, I may have a heart condition that I don't know about. A marathon might actually kill me!

Sad for this runner and for so many others who had troubles. It's sweltering here.....about 20-25 degrees warmer than it was in California!!

Sharon - glad to hear Jim finished and rested this afternoon. From what they are saying on the news here they ended the race early due to the heat. One man died and 250 others had to be taken to the hospital due to the heat. Nasty day here.

Edited to add - congrats to you and Matt on your runs as well.

Lisa and I are home, back to the chilly Florida from HOT Chicago.

We had a great time. Chicago is a fun city, but it sure was a long way and a lot of money to run the Chicago 19.1 mile FUN run.

The specators were great. I loved running through areas of Chicago I never been to before. This was my first Major marathon located in a city. 48,000 runners with a million watchers. It was a blast.

But.....I'm really disappointed in the race organizers. All the stories you may hear about water not being available are true. I didn't get any between mile 2 and 8. I saw people drinking out of public and private fountains.

I'm use to the heat so I slowed down and ran a smart race, but that really did not matter because they basically closed the course down where ever you were at. They may say you were allowed to finish, but not the case. They put busses across the roads. Police were making people walk back.

Once I heard what was going on I ran the last 3 miles in. They were the best three miles of the race because I was pacing myself for the hot weather.

Some day I'll do it again so I can say I ran the Chicago Marathon, but I can't say that today.

We will be back in February and will have another great time. I won't let this ruin my love for Chicago, just the Chicago Marathon.

Jim & co, check this one out:

What a cover up! This city is so focused on getting those damned olympics they're willing to outright lie, I see. There are currently over 125 replies to this article in tribune's forum all from either runners and even some of the volunteers outright saying that many stations were completely out of supplies. Considering the absolutely horrid weather conditions the organizers should have been better prepared with those supplies and other cooling methods in place. There were runners going into convenience stores and people using their own hoses to help cool the runners.

When I ran the West Palm Beach Marathon in December it was hotter, but they had the supplies out there.

Yesterday, they did not.

If it were not for the spectators I'm sure it would have been a lot worst. Many of the bars and restaurants were bringing out buckets of ice and water. People had garden hoses and offering water. Specatotors where giving up their own water bottles. I saw people sharing bottles.

The tough part of that is runners need more then water. They need electrolytes that are in sport drinks. I bring my own pills so can run on water, but many do not.

The Marathon Committee needs to come clean and apologize for what went wrong. They probably just don't know yet.

One of the guys I work with had a son who ran in the Chicago Race as well. He was one of the first group to go off (within the first 3 minutes) and he did finish the race in 3 hours+, but he said they were out of water before even the "elite" runners finished. He ended up with IV's and he told his Dad that he looked around to the others who were dehydrated, there were some of the best athletes who ran in the same position he was. He was trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon, but as of this morning (who knows if he will change his mind - he's mid 20's), he wasn't going to run a Marathon again. He decided to stick to the "shorter" races in the future.

CBS2 Chicago covered the entire run, beginning to end, we did watch, admittedly because Jim and also someone from Mary's job were running, and that finish was exciting! Though I had to wonder why the finish line banner was so teeny tiny, the people holding it kept getting in the way.

The Women's was no less interesting, as the woman leading on the final stretch was so busy waving to everyone she didn't see the 2nd place runner making a sprint to beat her on the outside.

The Marathon Committee needs to come clean and apologize for what went wrong. They probably just don't know yet.

And that's all I'd like to see.

Sofar, that's not happening, they had the organizer at some press conference on the evening local news and he again said they had plenty of supplies. '40 or 50 thousand servings of water per station' if I remember correctly what he said. Baloney. I've got only one reason other than the Olympic bid that I can think of they'd be so admant they did nothing wrong, and that's to try to head off any of the inevitable lawsuits that will happen. :/

arrrggg I'm a bit disappointed - I would have unequivocally said we're in for 2009 - a bit later in June(following Chicago school calendar). My parents want to do a family cruise for their 45th anniversary. - the plus - they would appreciate the cooler weather of Alaska - the minus - they just did an Alaskan cruise this summer.

We may flip to the Wonder if in fact they are doing 7 day cruises...

I agree, the scenery will be beautiful. My concern is how long before it gets old.

"That a nice tree" "Oh there is another tree and a glacier" "Oh and another one".......you get the point.

After being to Alaska twice I don't see this as being a cruise for kids because even in the ports most of the shore excursions are about looking at scenery.

I kept forgetting to ask Larry if he wanted me to book a cruise for us while on board next month, so I e-mailed him at home from work. Hello everyone. Have been away for the last few weeks because things have been soooo crazy. Dale is been so busy with school work, band and trying to get the college applications and essays written. Ashley has been busy with school, band and swimming. She went into hospital yesterday for a bone scan and 2 mri's (yuck). We will get results back on Tuesday. The waiting is terrible.

Went to the football game tonight and at 1/2 time, we were winning 49-6. Stayed and watched the full band show and then came home. We have already had one band competition this week and tomorrow is a full afternoon competition and more than likely back for finals tomorrow night. the show really looks good right now, so I hope the kids pull it off tomorrow and win. Two more weeks of competition and a few more football games. We end the season on November 8 with Senior Night, which I know will make me cry.

See you all later.

I hadn't been able to get online. I finally think I have figured out what's wrong, but I'd need to crawl under the desk, and climb behind it to fix the problem...and that ain't happening...so for now it will just have to be hit or miss for me for a while.....

We had an October anniversary as well... last Saturday - #17 for us. We spent it at the football field... after all, that's the way we spend every Saturday during football season. But that's OK... good friends, good weather, what more could we ask for. Went to Chart House for dinner that evening... yummy, of course.

It's been a crazy few weeks... I've had big events every weekend for work... today was the golf tournament that I am the chairman of... a Memorial Benefit for our employee that was killed in a motorcycle crash two years ago (Has it really been that long... I remember sharing that news with all of you!) Now I think things will settle down... this was the last of my crazy weekends... also had 2 black-tie events (missed one... football was in Orlando yesterday... haven't cloned myself yet.)

GaRry... glad you are enjoying our "hot" weather... actually, we think it has finally cooled off! My windows are even open!!!:dance3:

Please pray for a little boy named Zach who is a friend of ours... he is 8 years old, and is suffering chronic rejection from his double lung transplant that he had last year due to Cystic Fybrosis ... he is in CA now for treatment, but it doesn't sound hopeful... he is also autistic, which just compounds some of his issues. :grouphug: Thanks.

Prayers and PD for Zach from here, too.

Still have not decided on anything for our 20th in May. But it is never a problem to find a gift for Kevin. A gift certificate to B&H photo is always well received.

Alicia was an extra in a movie this past weekend! Coming to a theater near you in Fall '08, Hamlet 2. Look for the shorter redheaded cheerleader, there are two. Albuquerque has become Hollywood Southwest, and now she wants to do more!

I told Jay and Jared last night that I was going to owe Monica an apoligy for slighty boasting about the D-Backs beating the Cubs.
Jay said "Well, they still have a chance".........I'm afraid I responded to him with a "Jordan" look....

I don't have enough energy to over do it. ;)
Therapy starts tomorrow, and knowing my therapist, she'll have me whipped into shape in no time! Either that, or I'm going to die.........:sad2: She doesn't stand for any whining!

The diamondbacks were infected with Cubs syndrome! If you are going to lose, lose big!!!

2003 was a memorable playoff run against the Marlins for the Cubs. The series is best remembered by the Cubs leading the series 3-2 with 5 outs to go when the fan catch of a foul ball ultimately lead to the Cubs self-destruction. The Marlins went on to win the game and then the next one and went to the world series. But, the other part of the story is that the Marlins were originally leading 2 games to 0...

Moral: There's always hope until the last out!!!
Moral #2 There's always next year!!!

Well - it looks like I'm going to be house hunting in Houston for Kristin. It looks like she is going to accept the offer from Boeing and work at NASA at the Johnson Space Center. She'll be in Houston at least 3-5 years so we're going to look for a house for her and Nick. Nick is still looking for a job post graduation, but they want to end up together.... and I'm fine with that...

Road Trip in the next few months to Houston!!!!

He is. He treat her well - and fits in with the family quite nicely. I don't think her mom has figured out that they are going to be living together.....

Frances and I told Kristin that when the time comes they should elope to Vegas - just pick a time when we happen to be there...... :rotfl: I can't even fathom planning a wedding with her.....:confused3
