You all probably think I'm nuts posting pics of flowers. I have always loved tulips. After A.J. was born, though, tulips took on a new meaning....

Welcome to Holland

When you're going to have a baby, it's like planning a fabulous vacation trip - to Italy. You buy a bunch of guide books and make your wonderful plans. The Coliseum. The Michelangelo David. The gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It's all very exciting.

After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says, "Welcome to Holland."

"Holland?!?" you say. "What do you mean Holland?? I signed up for Italy! I'm supposed to be in Italy. All my life I've dreamed of going to Italy."

But there's been a change in the flight plan. They've landed in Holland and there you must stay.

The important thing is that they haven't taken you to a horrible, disgusting, filthy place, full of pestilence, famine and disease. It's just a different place.

So you must go out and buy new guide books. And you must learn a whole new language. And you will meet a whole new group of people you would never have met.

It's just a different place. It's slower-paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you've been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around.... and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills....and Holland has tulips. Holland even has Rembrandts.

But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy... and they're all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life, you will say "Yes, that's where I was supposed to go. That's what I had planned."

And the pain of that will never, ever, ever, ever go away... because the loss of that dream is a very very significant loss.

But... if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn't get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things ... about Holland.

If so, then I think that's where my tag came from. Lyn was asking me about my firefighting class one day and we got into that and a discussion of how many kids I had. Then in the next day or two I got tagged. I really think my tag came out of our discussion.

I read that poem all the time.

It's so weird. There was a movie on tv in the late fall of 1988. The name of the movie was "Kids Like These." My mom was living with DH, DD and I and she wanted to see the movie but I didn't. So I told her to watch it in the living room 'cause there was a better tv in there and I'd go in our bedroom. (DD was already in bed and DH was at work.) Right after the movie started I walked through the living room on my way to the kitchen to get a drink. I glanced at the tv and then leaned on the back of the recliner and stood there watching it. After a little while my mom said I might as well sit down and watch it. I watched the rest of it and never even got up to get my drink. I was glued to the tv. It was the story of the life of the mom that wrote that poem! What was so weird was that I was about
7-1/2 months pregnant with A.J....and we didn't know A.J. had Down Syndrome. Once he was born I had to find the poem and have always pulled strength and comfort from it!

Too bad you're not closer...DH had to shoot a deer at work today. (He was on duty and the deer had been hit by a car, no internal injuries but three of his/her legs were broken.)

Believe it or not he had a hard time finding someone to take it, everyone said their freezers were full! He finally did find a friend of ours that wanted it.

NO, we ate here, but when my cousin came home he wanted to go to the park, so me and Andie went with him and walked the trail

That sounds like fun!

I need an honest opinion... I feel really bad that I may have offended a friend at work. Background: She is older than me with grown kids and went through a divorce, so for a long time she worked this job and parttime. Now she is married to a wealth man with no kids, but I think they keep their finances separate...anyway, I was talking about the work we did on our downstairs and then I was talking about airfare to WDW (it went down today to $552 until the end of Feb.)...we always talk about things, but I asked her if I was boring her by going blah, blah, blah...she said no, she finds it interesting/funny, but that it would have taken her a really long time to do any home improvements since she would be comparing prices etc. and since she doesn't have as much money as me :guilty: so, now I feel like **** and told her that we did price things out and find what I thought was the best price, but that DH and I agree easily on things so we choose faster. So, now I feel really bad like I shouldn't talk about these types of things...and I probable won't. But then, I was reading the purse thread on here and I remembered that her DH bought her a $500+ Louie Vatton (sp?) bag for Christmas and right before I went to WDW last year she and her husband took separate trips to Asia and they are going to go together next year in May or June again. So, in a way I don't think I should feel that bad since we used to talk about these things before and it was cool, but I might just keep my mouth shut from now on :guilty:

You didn't do anything wrong!! Was she serious or do you think she may have been joking? If they can afford trips to Asia,( which I know are expensive b/c I was supposed to be going to Japan this year) they could do the same things you did. Maybe she just feels bad b/c she hasn't done anything to her house.

It is hard to tell, I don't understand woman even though I am one :goodvibes , but it could be that DH and I get along and my DH is really involved with the kids. I think her first husband wasn't too involved with the kids and that was part of the reason she left him...and her new husband really doesn't understand about kids at all. In my gut I really can't think it is about the money I spent since her husband is really well off and has so much more disposable income than DH and I....I know it is wrong to compare, but I shop sales, have no cable and cook from scratch, vacations are our spluge and we thought the work on our house was really worth it. They always eat out and her DH drinks and plays golf often...so I guess it is about choices :confused3 I am just sad that I may have hurt her feelings.... :guilty:

I wouldn't feel bad. Some people just like to make comments about other people having more money than them. And the truth is unless you sit with someone and actually discuss your financial situation with someone then they have no idea if you have more money than they do.

Looking at it the opposite way - I have a friend who likes to mention (okay, brag) that they have lots of money. Well, good for them. But they've never taken their kids to WDW, or any amusement park for that matter. They never do things like that with their kids. Then when we go to WDW they just assume we have loads of money 'cause they know those trips are expensive. Yes, the trips are expensive but that's how we'd prefer to spend our money. We may not have as much in the bank as they do but we enjoy life and hopefully when our time comes to check out of this world we won't have any regrets of what we could have done or what we should have done!

Does this make sense or did I just go way out into left field?

Anyway, don't feel bad!

I really don't think you should feel bad Lyn! you didn't do anything wrong. Maybe she's not happy with her DH, and she sees how happy you 2 are. your DH takes you to lunch, and obviously cares very much about your kids. Alot of people don't like it when other people are happy, you know what they say about misery loving company!

That makes sooo much sense Kathy!! My mom has a very good friend(the one btw who gave me the avon thing for x-mas) who is always talking about how much money she has, about how much everything cost her. But when we went to WDW she couldn't believe that we went one, that we flew 2, and that we stayed at the Poly. HELLLLLLOOOOO!! If you have so much money you could do it too! I feel the same way you do, I don't want to regret not enjoying my life while I could!

Anyway, don't feel bad! That makes perfect sense to me...that is how DH and I are, family is always first and we enjoy our time. Even fixing up our downstairs was to help improve our family life....

I know I shouldn't compare and I should be thankful that DH and I agree and that is all that matters and not to worry about others...I think I will start talking less though ;)

I was thinking about it too, when you were talking about the ill children in your life, that I should be thankful that we can enjoy our family time together and that we really try to make the most of it....I will stick to doing what I feel is right for my family and just keep my comments to myself. :teeth: it is too bad though, I don't mean or want to brag, but sometimes I do get excited about things and like to share :flower:

That's it! It's a lot about lifestyle choices. That's kind of what I was getting at when I started wondering if I had gone off in left field! :rotfl: Everybody lives differently and they have different priorities. You are a lot like my DH and I. Travel is important to us and that's our splurge. We'd rather take a trip to WDW than worry about adding more to our retirement account. We don't drive fancy vehicles, we don't own lots of "toys" but we do take pride in our house and are renovating every time you turn around. Our friends have a gorgeous house but it's a showplace, not a home. Ours is a home. Often she will get a little dig in that really makes me feel bad like I've hurt her feelings but it's almost like a reverse psychology thing. Anyway, I've just learned not to worry about it.

You should just be glad that you do have a DH that wants to be at home with you and the kids and that wants to work on the house.

Lyn ~ There's a difference between talking and bragging and I really doubt that you were bragging.

I know you told us all the other day about the project you were doing and I could tell how excited you were to be doing it. There was no bragging about it. (Although I was envious....since DH and I do projects like that but it always takes us sooooo long to get them done! :rotfl: )

You and Tracy are so right, ITA and thanks for making me feel so much better....now I won't be thinking about it all the way home :rotfl: That is how my house is too, we like to take care of it, but it is a place to live. One day, my dad spilled a beer on my couch when the kids jumped on him and got a panick look, I told him not to worry, to remember this is my house and the fabric can be cleaned up in a minute..that we would much rather he visit. In my mom's house, everything is white :faint:it is really hard with all the young kids...not always comfortable.

Thanks again, you guys really cheered me up. Now, I have to get home :wave2: :moped:
