we are getting a GWL in NC by 2009. (beside the lowes motor speedway) i don't have the new planner yet, kinda of hoping that we can use points at GWL. ( though i doubt it since they would be a competitor to disney)
anyway it seems like it would be a fun 1 night get-a-way.
has anyone experienced this place?

Ours just opened in Grapevine Texas.
They are having Grand Opening Specials but even the lowest category of room is $200 a night for a family of 5 (taking a cousin) and the weekends are closer to $300 p/n.
Makes me appreciate the value of Disneypirate:
I was going to take my DS for his birthday.
There's a Silverleaf Resort about an hour south of us that I am considering buying a cheap resale at just for these quick getaways. They also offer an indoor waterpark and other activities and it sits on a huge lake.
Just heard that our GWL is expanding already due to demand so it must be a really nice place.

Yes, I would suggest the night of either 5/24 or 10/10..... I think there is an event or something at that Lowes Motor thingy.

I just booked a stay at the GWL in the Dells.. Anything and everything you can tell me about the place would be swell. We are going for Spring break and from the looks of it a lot of the Dells normal stuff is closed...
Any off site dining places you can suggest? Is Tommy Bartlets Imaginariumporium thing worth the money??
Thanks!

I have a reservation for May 4th at the one in Grapevine. Lucky enough to get in on the $169.00/night grand opening special. The schools here are off on that Monday. Looks pretty nice. I will report back.
Another thumbs up for the Great Wolf Lodge in Wisconsin! We'd go in the winter. Park the car, enjoy the indoor waterparks, get room service, and never leave the place.
I vote that DVC buy the place so we could stay there on points!!!

You will absolutely love GWL. You do not even need to leave the park. We have stayed for a spring break and the past 3 x-mas's breaks. It is so safe and clean. They have now added a outlet mall and a bowling alley right across the street. But really all you have to is pack some shorts (really warm in water area which is nice, you will think you are in Florida), swimsuits, and jammies and your set. We have stayed in all different kinds of rooms. You can PM me if you need for info, but I would love to buy some time to stay there if I could.

I want to venture out and about a little bit... last time I was in the Dells was 31 years ago :scared1:
Think it's changed a bit??:lmao:
We are staying in the Royal Bear Suite.. (fam of 5) Do you happen to remember how big the fridges are? The size of a DVC studio fridge or smaller??
There is a camp ground I want to check out, if the Ducks are up and running I would like to do that too... and we really want places other than the hotel to eat.

We have one a couple of hours to our north, but have never been. I priced it a few times, but was underwhelmed for the price. Plus, the whole indoor filtered, recycled water thing kinda gave me the willies.

We have stayed in the suites and lastly the condo rooms, which had full kitchens. They are so new and nice, we loved having the fireplace also. How many BRs is your suite?? There are lots of restraunts all around the area. When we there at x-mas time, it was kind of like a ghost town when we drove around, but really neat with all the lights decorated on all the rides. We had plenty to do just in that area, but our kids loved the water parks and Wiley's Woods (indoor playground that my husband had a ball in), there is also a pizza hut express in that part. If you like to have a cocktail, they have a nice pool bare with the best pina coladas ever!! Have a great time, it is my family's 2nd favorite place next to Disney!!:)

We have a GWL, Castaway Cay(Cedar Point's entry into the indoor waterpark market) and Kalahari(African theme) about an hour away from us. Never have been to any of them.
One of them had a bunch of people get sick last Spring. Some sort of upper respitory thing, not stomach stuff.

We stay at the Great Wolf every time we go to Minnesota to visit my family (half way between Chicago and St. Paul). As to the regular Dells activities, based on the kind of winter we are having this year, you would not want to be outside in any event. But, we have gone to a restaurant called Moosejaw I think - it is pretty close by. There are lots of other restaurants throughout the Dells, and nothing is that far away. Also, for adults, you could visit Ho Chunk Casino - very close as well. (My sister won $15,000 on dollar slots there a few years ago.)

Well, perhaps GWL has changed lately, but it seemed to us to be a poor imitation of anything Disney. But then, as a Wisconsinite, I'm not too proud of what the Dells has become anyway.
A great place to eat in town, IMHO, is the Del-Bar for a "nice" meal. Was known as Jimmy's Del Bar forever and I've been there since his passing and it was just as good as I remembered. Make sure to clog the arteries with the hash browns....ohhhh,momma, hurt me! Is a favorite with the locals. And for a nice informal burger, you just can't beat Monk's. But don't go to the "fancified" Monk's out at the Wilderness. You gotta go right to the heart of the sleazy downtown for the originial. Do not be put off by a line out the door.

GWL in the Dells Rocks. I am there right now. Other than WDW, it is my top destination. Anyone that has not been to the Dells, it is great. Go to noahs ark!

Love the Dells!! We have not stayed at Great Wolf but at the Wilderness during the summer! I did not want to leave! (my kids loved Monks!)

My DW told me about GWL just recently. Accomodations were extremely high for there. More so than Disney if I remember correctly. If that is the case, then why would I go there? Disney offers a variety of options from theme parks to water parks to golf, etc, etc, etc. I think you get the point.
What is the draw for GWL? Other than it's might be close by you?

Exactly it. Many people don't want to fly, and driving a car 1200 miles and more each way is not something you want do multiple times a year. It is just a decent alternative on occasion.

It's an easy drive for us.. We are taking just a few days over spring break and quite frankly you will NEVER EVER see us at WDW during SPRING BREAK!

They run specials there all the time and you can pretty decent rates, and the accomodations are fabulous, plus water park and wiley woods all included in price. There are no seperate prices for tickets to purchase. It's not Disney, but it is a great getaway. My kids have been to both numerous times, and if they had thier choice, they probably choose GWL due to freedom and no lines. Have fun!!:)

I think the GWL is just a different experience. I prefer it (or actually in the Dells, the Kalahari) for short one/two night getaways. Not something that is really feasible for WDW when you live in WI.
The accomodations are fine, but when at the Kalahari (across the street) we get the 3 bedroom Condo with kitchen/living room which is very comparable to a DVC unit. The side bedrooms are lockoffs so they still have a microwave & fridge. I imagine the GWL condos are similar.
We enjoy getting out of the snow and doing fun waterpark activities in the middle of winter. It helps with the winter blues. In the summer they have large outdoor water parks as well. So if your kids like waterparks it's worth a trip.

WAIT WAIT WAIT. Are you people trying to tell me that Disney is not the only place with water parks? Hold the phone. How could this happen? Are you trying to tell me that the happiest place on earth is not the only place to go?
You can't sell me on these feeble lies. Disney is the place. What's all this talk about 1 and 2 day trips. My god, vacations have to be a week or better. They must require a certain commitment to travel to your destination. Without some adversity of travel, one cannot enjoy the fruits of a vacation.
Ha, water parks that are not at Disney.

OMG, my family is GWL obsessed. We have one about an hour and a half away from our house, and it's in the mountains where its freezing! It's great in the winter because there is tubing and skiing nearby with discounts and we go there all the time for one night on the weekend. It's great if you need a quick getaway from the house. Now that we've seen and done everything at the resort multiple times, we spend some quality time in our room (gotta love those kid cabins!)! We went for New Year's Eve and it was fantastico! They had a party and a family game show. In the family game show, we made it to the finals and ended up winning second place! One free night at GWL. I could go on and on and on about this place...it's soo great, but not cheap.

Just stayed at GWL Williamsburg for two days last week on Winter break.
Initially tried to book GWL Poconos which is closer - smallest room was $525 a night - Yikes. Fortunately they did not have a room.
Called Williamsburg and found out the rate was $199 a night! Jumped in the car and drove 6 hours to get there only to find they UPGRADED us free to the largest suite they had - Grisley - two bedroom / two bath with jacussi ($700+ per night up north) for the same $199. :cool1:
Nice place for a short visit but more than two days there would be a bit boring according to the kids (12-14).
