Thank you guys for your positive responses. I do feel better. My DH is actually the one fighting me on the downgrade because he says "Everything is all planned and we were looking forward to staying there". $700 is just ALOT of money and we could really use it towards the roof, you know?

I just sent him links to the Pop FAQ thread, the picture threads and all the great reviews on Trip Advisor.

I really think it will be fine but I still plan on keeping our ressie for Boatwrights for breakfast!! I've really been looking forward to trying the banana stuffed french toast

The water towers are above the boat & bike rental place, by the marina where you get the boat to DTD. They're in my sig in fact! :)

You are going to Disney and will have a great trip no matter what. I noticed that this is your first trip though. I agree with your husband. The difference in money is well worth it for the better experience you will get at POR.

She said it was very comfortable and that the blanket was really soft.

She sleeps like a chipmunk. LOL

Thanks for the pic! We've only stayed at POR once, and that was just me and DH in the mansion section. This visit, we will have all three kiddies with us and the five year old will need the trundle.

I'm a little worried that we will feel a little tight in POR  ...we stayed at the Poly last visit.....but DH says we're not spending that much this vacation.

There are 5 of us too. Dh, me, DD15, DD14, and DGD5. But I figure we won't be spending much time in the rooms so it should be okay. We wouldn't be going if we had to stay somewhere more expensive. I was able to convince DH to stay on property because of the Free dining. :rolleyes1

we're headed back to POR in Aug ( our FAVORITE) and can't wait. Funny thing is, I just returned from a cruise that I planned last year (our first) and everyone on the cruise board (non disney) talked about how great it is and the towel animals too.....well
Don't get me wrong, it was a WONDERFUL experience (visiting foreign places and doing NEW things) but I STILL can't wait to get to POR. I REALLY feel like it is a HOME AWAY FROM HOME, REALLY!!! It's NUTS but I cannot wait to return again.....and again.....and again....
Our upcoming trip is with my brother/sis in law and their three girls (and one is my sons age) so they will be able to have some EXTRA fun together!!! CANNOT WAIT...:cheer2: :cheer2:

I completely agree!! Stay with Riverside you will not be disapointed!! I am a Deluxe girl and I still really love Riverside!! I really do not like any of the Value resorts!!!

Also ask to stay in the Mansion area I find this to be nicer then the Bayou!! Of coarse this is a personal prefrence!!!

I love hearing about people's recent trips too! Could someone who's just come back let me know what drinks they now serve at the beverage fountains? I'd heard that the rather sickly fruit punch has now been replaced by apple juice, which would be great news for me if it's true!

We're booked at the SOG next April (woo-hoo under 1 yr!), but I'm thinking that I might change my ressies to the POR because I have an anti-Disney spouse and the AB section is much more his style. These pics are making it hard for me, they are great! Did the Riverside section used to be Dixie Landings? I stayed there in April 95 on my graduation trip, it was great and I never once remember the busses being crowded or having excessive commutes.

We just got back from a week stay at Riverside. We were in AB and thought it was so beautiful. Once I finish sorting through the insane number of pics I took I'll post some!
The resort was full when we were there (ack!) but we hardly noticed. The buses were fine. The food court got crazy around peak eating times, but that was about it. Everyone was quite nice and it was a great trip. We would definitely stay there again!

Hello, I'm new here. We stayed at POR 4-19 to 4-27. It was a wonderful trip!

Will you be doing a trip report?? The family and I are trying to decide whether to go back to POFQ or Coronado Springs again, or staying at a new moderate, like Riverside. Can't wait to see pics! Did you enjoy your stay at the resort?

I'll second the early-morning tip. Coming from the UK, the 5-hour time difference means we tend to be awake really early on our first morning so my DD (8) and I always go "moon walking" (as she calls it) at about 5am.

Not sure if I've posted these before, but the resort is so beautiful and peaceful at that time, and the water is like a mill-pond:

I am Leaving Early June and I just cannot wait! I have weird memories/likes at this place. The sound of the air conditions when you walk past the room. Thanks for the compliments. Those pics were taken with a Canon DSLR, Digital Rebel XT. The fog one was hand-held, and the dawn one was supported on the footbridge handrail I think (0.8 sec, f4, ISO 100).

DH are I are staying at POR Riverside for the first time in Dec and we are very excited. So I cannot help you with that resort. But it looks so beautiful and of course he can take the boat to Downtown Disney area.

Also Wilderness Lodge is gorgeous. My DH is an outdoors man and he loved it there when we went to WCC for lunch.

We have stayed at SOG many times and your DH may like it because it is very quiet there. Beautiful grounds and if he likes golf he can play a round or drive some golf balls. Evergreens Sports Bar and Grill always has a sports channel on it's big screen. He could also walk to the Poly and sit on the beach.
The buses are less crowded than the Disney ones.

Oh well good luck deciding and I will be crossing my fingers that he becomes a big Disney fan.:goodvibes

I have a question for you guys....Can you go to any resort you want and swim in their pool and check the place out??

I'm asking because we are about 99% sure we are downgrading from POR to POP (See earlier post) but I'm keeping my ressie for breakfast at Boatwrights on our day to stay at the resort. My husband suggested that we could just stay at POR after breakfast to swim, do the fishing and rent the bike like we planned even though we are staying at Pop and then had back there later in the afternoon to explore over there.

I know that might sound silly but I'm having a hard time letting go :sad2:

Nope you are not allowed to pool hop to any other resorts pools, unless they are sister resorts like POR/POFQ. You would only be able to use Pop's pool if that is where you were staying.

Are you sure about that? I thought the only place one couldn't pool hop was the Yacht and Beach Clubs. Maybe it is a DVC thing, then. Either way, I just got back, and we went to the Beach Club pool to visit friends who were staying there and we didn't have a problem. In fact, when I left late at night, there were several other families in bathing suits/towels who were on the bus with us. I assume they were all doing the same thing......With that said, not that I think about it, I guess it was the wrong thing to do. I would probably be upset if I was paying top dollar to stay at the Beach Club and others were freeloading off of the pool.

I don't think anyone would know if you are not from the resort. when we went to the main pool (we did stay at POR) there wasn't anyone checking room keys. the pool towels are just off to the side so anyone can take them. when we were in Vegas we had to show the room key to get a towel. Not the case here and there was a sign at the bar. I don't remember the exact wording but something like a complimentary drink for hotel quests only. Must show room key to get the drink.

When we stayed at the POLY we were asked to show our room key for pool towels. At Runaway Bay /Yacht Club each guest gets a wrist band.
You are only allowed to use the pool at your resort. Otherwise. the pools would get extremely crowded... especially the ones with great slides.
I wouldn't like the embarrassment of being asked to leave.
JMHO.

Your right about the not wanting to invade the pool of someone else's resort. It's frowned upon and certain lengths have been made to make sure people aren't doing this at some of the more popular pools (but meant for you not to do at any pool) around The World because of over crowding. I've even seen posted on the boards that people have been asked to leave from pools when people were just visiting others at their resort and not even swimming, just sitting by the pool. :guilty:
I think you hit the nail on the head when you said you would probably be upset if others were invading your resorts pool when they didn't pay the money you would have paid for a deluxe resort. But hey I can't say I blame you for asking, it doesn't hurt to ask, but I will warn you, you won't always get a warm response when asking this question. LOL Specially on some of the "other" Disboards that start with a c, they are very passionate on the some of the "other" Disboards that start with a c. :rotfl:
:furious: <---this is some of the members when asking this ? about pool hopping and refillable mugs being used from last time you came.

Don't forget that although pool-hopping is a definite no no :sad2: (apart from between the two Port Orleans resorts' guests) you can still take advantage of any of the paid activities (hey, this is Disney, they never refuse your money!). So you can still eat at any of the restaurants, go fishing, rent a Surrey Bike or boat, or take a carriage ride.

Yes I'm sure, this is the case for normal guests. However I've read that DVC members ARE allowed to pool hop if the pool is not too busy.

DVC members staying at a DVC resort on points are allowed to pool hop to all pools except Y&BC and AKL and then only when it's not busy. Black-out dates are posted on the DVC website (like Spring Break, 4th July week, Christmas and New Years, etc) when we can't pool hop at all. I'll be at SSR for a few days before we go on our 4-day cruise and then move over to POR :).

Well, I guess we aren't downgrading from POR to POP. I called today and they said nothing is available for the free dining at any of the value resorts.

I have to admit I'm a little relieved! I never wanted to move but thought it made sense financially but now that the decision is made for us we'll just deal with it. I'm happy to be staying at POR though.

I did try to move our water view room to a standard room based on what a previous poster said and suggested but they said no standard rooms are available either but I could try back.

Boy - it sounds like the whole place is really going to be booked/crowded if there are no more available rooms. Do you guys find that the free dining period gets more and more crowded as more people find out about it each year?

One of the things that I love about POR is that the resort can be totally booked and based on your room location you may never see any other guests!

i think the common misunderstanding here is that there are probably a whole bunch of standard rooms available-they just arent linked to the free dining promotion-same with the value resort-you could probably easily downgrade to a value but it would be without the free dining promotion. so im sure there are still plenty of available rooms at the resort waiting to be boooked just without free dining promotion ....atleast thats how i understood it from the CM i spoke too.....someone could easily correct me if im mistaken :)

I think you are correct. I wanted to use my postcard code for a Wilderness Lodge room but all of the 'code' rooms were booked for our November trip - except courtyard view with bunkbeds, which we didn't want. I could have reserved a room at the regular rate because there were still rooms available, just not discounted 'code' rooms. Only so many rooms are allotted to these different promotions. But happily, there were still code rooms available at POR!!! :yay:

Dh and I finally agreed on a resort. I thought it would never happen. He likes the mansions and I like AB. Either will be good I think. My question is I can't seem to find where a good place to be in the mansions. My biggest goal is to not have to carry a sleeping 5 year a long distance back to out room from the bus. Which is the best ? I was thinking Magnolia Terrace? But I'm not sure. If you don't request a place ust close to the buses which section are you likely to get? I saw that Bldg 14 in AB was close to the buses it that right? This is our first family trip and I want everything to be great.Any help would be greatly appreciated! TIA

Magnolia Terrace and AB 14 I believe are both the closest to the food court and main bus stop, but there are other bus stops that are closer to the rooms that are farther out as well. And as you probably know, all you can do is request, but theres no guarantee your going to get it. I wouldn't worry about it too much though, we were in an AB room that was the farthest from the food court a couple years ago, but there was a quiet pool and bus stop right outside our room, so we only had to walk far in the mornings for breakfast. On the way back from parks, we would get off at the main bus stop so we could be right by the food court.

How bout some more pics anyone? I leave for POR in 8 days and can't wait to get back! I'll be taking lots of pics!

TIA

We were in AB building 37 last September. it was a rather long walk to the main building but North Depot bus stop was literally RIGHT out our door. Don't forget about the other bus stops when you look at the maps, in actuality there are 4 of them. The main depot gets the most use, but the buses do stop at all 4.

Edited to add: If you are set on being in the mansions, it appears from my map that building 80 (Acadian House) is quite close to North Depot, but your best choice would probable be building 85 (Magnolia Terrace). East Depot appears to be *in* Magnolia's parking lot.
HTH!

Another thought about the bus stops. I believe the main stop near the General Store is the last stop. You have better chances of getting a seat at one of the first AB stops.

This was not always the case last week...At the South (main) depot, many times we were the first stop and then the bus went around to the others...sometimes the South stop was the last stop?
I could never, ever figure out if their was supposed to be a pattern...
Sometimes we shared with POFQ, sometimes it was direct to POR. Sometimes it stopped at POFQ first, then went to West depot at POR and around to the South. Sometimes it went straight to the South depot at POR? I do remember at Epcot and MK at night we never shared with POFQ and went to the South stop at POR first. Picking up and dropping off.
However, many times the bus was already almost full before it came to the South stop to pick us up.

And last September, they were even doing it differently! Usually in the mornings South Depot was so crowded that it got its own bus! Then a separate bus would pick up West, North, and East Depots. Every morning, by the time the bus got to us at West, there were still only like 10 people on it.

Who knows how they do it, I think a lot of it is based on season, crowd levels, and time of day... they just adjust to fit needs.

From a 3nite post cruise stay at POR. We stayed in the Magnolia Terrace Section room 8759. The East Depot is right on the back side of the building - not a far walk at all. Quiet pool and laundry right downstairs, and a very short walk to the main pool.

The place is wonderful, take a day away from the park and enjoy the resort. My Son (5) was so excited to see they had bikes there, that we were out for an hour just riding around the resort.

We did not have any problems with the Buses while we were there.

One of the things that I love about POR is that the resort can be totally booked and based on your room location you may never see any other guests!

Yes, Alligator Bayou and the Mansion buildings have completely different decors. Mansions are much more like French Quarter rooms.

And yes AB = Alligator Bayou, the beds are just a little to rustic for me, I would be afraid at night I would bump into the beds and bang up my feet/legs or hands if I hit the headboard, I like the Mansions MUCH better.

The one in the photo a few postings back (the round fountain infront of the "whitehouse-style" building) is on the riverview side of Oak Manor. Most of the mansion buildings have water features of some kind though - see the Magnolia Bend section of the Gallery at my website for more photos.

Wow those are amazing, just a question, what kind of camera are you using? Did you use Photoshop to alter the pics? My husband is just getting into using his new Digital SLR and hoping to take great pics when we are in POR in September.

Can't wait to show him your pictures, they are stunning. You should sell the pictures to Disney for their promos. They definitely show how beautiful POR is.

What does HDR'd mean? I'm not very savy to anything tech-ish, but then I'm sure you could tell that from the question. LOL

What does HDR'd mean? I'm not very savy to anything tech-ish, but then I'm sure you could tell that from the question. LOL

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range, a fairly advanced photographic post-processing technique which allows photos with very mixed brightness levels (e.g. a sunny scene that is viewed through a dark archway) to provide better visible detail over the whole image area rather than having one part under-exposed and another part over-exposed. It can also be used to create interesting effects and change the mood of photos. There are programs around now which pretty much automate this process for beginners.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_dynamic_range_imaging

Quick question, is this a deep or shallow part of the pool? Just trying to figure out if my son will be able to play in this part or not. He is still a new swimmer. Thanks.

Also, I love the pictures. I've keep calling to see if we can get a room at POFQ instead since we're familiar with it and love it there. However your pictures made me think maybe I shouldn't. I am curious about the fishing too. Did you bring your own poles or are they there to rent? Something else I know DS would love to try with his dad. Thanks again.

That section (with the island in the middle) is the deep part. Off to the left is the shallower stepped entry area, and there's also a seperate kiddie pool which is only a foot or so deep.

the pool question was answered, so here is the fishing one:
we rented the cane poles at the fishing hole. just a little bit from the pool. the boys loved it! it was all catch and release.

Thanks...He is proud of it. He has been obsessed lately with YouTube videos of Disney. I think it's helping him get over the WDW withdrawl. We had such a wonderful 1st WDW vacation in May, I've lost count of how many times my kids have asked...

"Dad, when do think we will go again? What resort do think we will stay at when we go again? Can we stay at POR when we go back to WDW? Dad, can't you wait to ride EE and ToT again? Are we going next year again? Do we have to wait like 3 years to go back? Can we go in 2010 maybe?"

This thread has made me so excited to stay at POR. I was really torn cause I was staying my entire vacation at BWI on bounceback when the AP rates came out. I have wanted to try PO but didn't want to pay full price when I can get a room at the Swan/Dolphin for the same price. With the AP rate I decided to do a split stay. . .Now I am at POR for 5 nights and BWI for three nights. . .this has me VERY excited. . .and these pics have SOLD this place to me.

I'm staying here in October and I am SO excited:cool1: I stayed there when it was still Dixie Landings a long time ago, but I don't remember it well at all. We should be in the AB section since we need the trundle bed, which, based on the pictures, I think I"ll like more than the mansions. Thanks for all the great pics! I can't wait!

Same here. It has gotten a few bad reviews which worried me at first. The good reviews outweigh the bad ones. Everyone has their own tastes. POR just doesn't suit some. I think it looks absolutely gorgeous. I don't know where they will put us, that's a part of the surprise for me. I know I will enjoy it no matter what.;)

I'm so glad I found this thread!

I'm in the process of booking a second honeymoon at Port Orleans Riverside for November. We stayed at Dixie Landings for our original honeymoon 13 years ago. This will be our first "getaway" trip since our children were born over 8 years ago...so I can't wait!

These pictures remind me so much of our honeymoon and I can't wait to book this trip!

I just need building suggestions. We were in Alligator Bayou years ago...and I want to do that again, of course, but are there any AB rooms that are near a parking lot? I know it sounds crazy, but we actually need to be close to a parking lot because we are going to a trade show during our trip and have to drive to the Orlando Convention Center for several of the days.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

I'm so glad I found this thread today. We had to switch from POFQ to POR due to AP discount availablitiy, so I've been trying to convince myself that it was a wise decision. This thread has definitely put my mind at ease!!
I do have a question I'm hoping someone can answer. We don't take the buses, but prefer to drive to the parks. Are there parking lots behind each of the different buildings, or will we have to park in one central lot and then possibly have to walk a far distance to our room?

zackiedawg

Each section has its own parking lots. You may be farther from your particular room just because it's such a big resort, but not from your building or section. You should be fine.

I know this has been discussed but I am wondering- are there specific pros and cons between the mansions vs the other rooms? I understand its personal preference :rolleyes1 but there have to be some differences

seems like the other rooms are more rustic vs elegant in the mansions not sure either one is more less appealing to us, my 8 yr old DD thinks the word MANSION is clearly indicitive of a better time ;) but what would we be giving up and what would make it that much better?

also- if you request mansion is it guareenteed?

thanks all

Everytime I book a trip to WDW I think I am going to try another resort and then it's just impossible. The one thing that really makes a difference for us is the quiet. It's just so quiet and I know the resort is full.

The other thing is the boat ride to DTD. What a way to travel. So very relaxing, something new to see with every ride.

In the AB section, on the second floor, I always feel like we are in a treehouse. So lush and green.

In January I booked POFQ  I hope it is equally as beautiful.

River view from Alligator Bayou 14 or 27 is great, or river view from Oak Manor or especially Parterre Place with the water ferries and carriage rides going past at night.

I've stated it before. One of the most pleasurable times my family has at Disney is at least one morning during our stay at POR, we wake up real early and take a sunup walk down the Sassagoula over to POFQ for beignets. It is one of the most refreshing and enjoyable things there is. My kids love the little bunnies you see while walking along the trail. You have got to do it. It's a great way to start a day.:thumbsup2

We love that too. Coming from the UK, we're always still running on British time on our first morning, so we tend to wake up at far-too-early-O'clock.

My DD (now 8) and I now have a tradition that on our first morning at about 5.30 we'll go "moon walking" (her phrase) around POR. It's so still and peaceful and the river is as calm as a millpond. We'll explore the resort, she'll dip her feet in the swimming pool, and we'll watch the dawn arrive as we walk around. It's really lovely.

I love this thread and am now forever addicted as we are booked to stay there in May. From the looks of this thread I made the right choice. :cool1:
Does anyone have any photos of the main pool.
I had no problem finding the dragon slide at POFQ and I heard POR has a nice slide as well but I have yet to find a picture of it anywhere.
Anyone?:confused3

We love that too. Coming from the UK, we're always still running on British time on our first morning, so we tend to wake up at far-too-early-O'clock.

My DD (now 8) and I now have a tradition that on our first morning at about 5.30 we'll go "moon walking" (her phrase) around POR. It's so still and peaceful and the river is as calm as a millpond. We'll explore the resort, she'll dip her feet in the swimming pool, and we'll watch the dawn arrive as we walk around. It's really lovely.

Then you and your daughter see plenty of bunnies on your walks. I see you took that pic at the quiet pool next to Oak Manor. That's were my wife and I take the kids the last afternoon before we leave so they can swim and we wash clothes. I asked to be in Oak Manor for our stay next week. Can't wait.:thumbsup2

We will be stayin' at the POR within the next two weeks...and I am a bit curious.
Can anyone tell me how much it costs for the following:
to rent Surrey Bikes?
to rent the water mice?
to take a carriage ride and is it per person or per ride?

Thanks a bunch!!!
We can't wait to leave!!!!!!:goodvibes

Sure can. To save a bit of re-typing though, please see: www.portorleans.org?sub_rec_rentals.htm (http://www.portorleans.org/?sub_rec_rentals.htm) and www.portorleans.org?sub_rec_recreation.htm (http://www.portorleans.org?sub_rec_recreation.htm)

Does anybody have any new pics? :confused3 I just booked with the 40% code and I am so excited!! :yay:

It seems like CBR and CSR are the " Hot Resorts" right now. I guess because of their refurbs....But there has to be some POR lovers out there somewhere......
