View Full Version : Just wondering....addiction?

Okay, so I'm home recovering from a surgery, and sitting here on the boards, which I'm addicted to and check every single day. I could be watching a movie, or reading a book, or polishing my nails, or contemplating the secrets of the universe......but here I am, lurking around the posts and dreaming of being at the BWV and spending time in
WDW.... leading me to wonder......am I the only one?

Sometimes this feels so ordinary and normal, sometimes it feels very weird to have such a "thing" for DVC/WDW, Walt, the mouse, The DIS, etc.
WHY? What it is about Mr. Walt Disney's wonderful imagination, creation....his "world" that just makes me want to be part of it every single day? There are so many places in the world we could vacation at, NONE have the draw like this, no one place that I want to go back to over and over and over!! Some of my family/friends/co-workers/acquaintances think I'm out of my mind, some love me for my "eccentricity", some are "catching" the "itis".

Just wondering how many of my fellow Disers feel the same way, or am I totally nuts? (maybe it's the painkillers???) Whatever it is.......I'm going with it, best thing we ever purchased was DVC, I've already got two trips planned for this year, and one on the horizon for next....with the planning fairies spinning in my head for what to do with those leftover points.....

Thanks for "listening" to my thoughts......

First, wish you a speedy recovery:) Looks like you have a great trip coming up!!

I wouldnt call it an addicition...cause I believe the love of all things Disney and DVC is a positive thing:) My friends dont "get it"...my DH is starting to!

Dont want to bore everyone with my life story and the Disneyesque parts to it...lol...but..my fae..we were married 5 years ago this year at the Polynesian on June 28...My Dh and I had struggled with pregnancies, our AVa was born June 28, 2006:) Her first trip to WDW at 14 mths...once DH saw her having so much fun there...he couldnt sign the DVC contract fast enough:) Her third trip is in June for her 2nd birthday:)

Sorry...back to you OP:)

Hi Diane! Get well soon!:goodvibes I was just wondering the same thing - I'm home alone, have lots of useful things I could be doing, but I've been on the DIS for (gasp!) over an hour! We own DVC too, and have one trip planned, and I'm planning a solo for my 40th in Nov. (shhh - secret!).
I'm on these boards at least twice a day, devouring new info and trying to help other dis'ers with tips from my many visits.
My family and friends think it's a sickness, but I look at it as therapy to get me through my WDW withdrawal until my next trip.
So keep DISing:surfweb:

'Obsession' or 'compulsion' are probably better words! We all have WDWOCD on the DIS!:lmao: I could have a spotless house if I weren't on these boards as often as I am! But what fun would that be.

Hope you have a speedy recovery!

Hope you get well soon!:goodvibes Addiction?...I choose to call it my "escape". I love reading trip reports to see how others enjoy their DVC and take notes on things we may want to try in the future. I spend a lot of time caring for my elderly parents, so Disney is my much needed escape from reality. Others drink, I choose to DIS.:surfweb:

Thanks for your replies and good wishes.....compulsion, obsession, addiction, escape, they all seem to fit the bill! Could be worse, I'm still here on the boards, still WDW dreaming and most wonderfully....still planning!

Have a great day.....

You are not alone...it is crazy. I was thinking about it yesterday in the car how now I really do look at the boards everyday. The only times I skip it are if we have gone out of town or if I have just gotten back froma trip and I need alittle break. For about a week only though!:lmao:
sometimes I scan them and don't find anything to read...other times I can't get through them at all because they are so great!
My friends are amazed that I am so Disney happy but I can't explain it to them. Once you get bitten you bleed Mickey from then on. and boy have I been bitten...:cloud9:

Well for one thing, many of us are probably getting cabin fever from the long cold snowy winter we've been having...I know I am  It sure makes for a nice diversion when you're stuck in the house in the cold north!

Visiting these boards always brings me closer to any upcoming vacation we have planned and I'm one of those people who always has to have a vacation to look forward to!

Face it, a good percentage of the world is addicted to SOMETHING on the internet...we should be thankful that for us, it's the Disboards ;) :disrocks:

OMG Diane, I'm recovering from surgery too and I'm doing the same thing!!! That is really funny! I keep clicking around the board just to read ANYTHING new!! I do believe that it is a serious addiction, but in a good way! I just want my little bit of Disney.....all of the time! I just chalk it up to...I'm not allowed to do anything (lifting, bending, walking stairs) so I am ALLOWED to, and not feeling guilty about, surfing this board!! Our next trip is in July, so I have a great reason to sit on here for hours:upsidedow

Hope you're feeling better....speedy recovery to you!

I could be watching a movie, or reading a book...

This is funny...because not long ago I was being flamed for saying I liked the DIS boards for entertainment.

The flame was that I should read a book or watch a movie instead...which is okay I guess, but it was from someone that has been on the boards for 9 years and had over 20,000 posts.

Well... Diane... It is hard to say. You have a sort of poetic way of writing, which could certainly indicate the influence of strong pain medications.

I have experienced this mellow world once when ending up in the hospital with a broken back... just laying there and thinking.... this is kind of nice....

But, I suspect we're all just happy people, looking for a happy place to be, with other happy people. Yep.

Oh.. and Miss Loveit (Laura) please stop clicking all over the place.... you're slowing the boards down.

These boards make me feel like I'm 1000 miles south when I'm sitting here in the cold Northeast. Like Deb, I'm another one who always needs to plan. I drive DH crazy  when I start talking about the vacation after next when the "next" one is still 9 months away.

My DH thinks I enjoy the planning part more! lol But I love it, its the next best thing to being there!!

And I love to read abt what others are planning, when going etc!!

well, i've been sitting here on many medications with my handy-dandy ice pack (back injury), for almost 3 months now :guilty: . (just today, WC finally approved me for a procedure that should help ~ i'm so excited, i would jump up & down........if i could :lmao: ).
honestly, i think the DIS has helped me keep my sanity. nothing else around me changes (laundry is not done, dust bunnies have taken over, etc), but there is always something new going on here. i love reading through the TRs, visualizing each step, learning a little something new everyday, asking & answering questions.
and, my post count skyrocketed since the injury.:rolleyes1

most importantly, diane & laura ~ i hope you're both feeling better soon!! :thumbsup2

I would say it is a compulsion and an addiction for me. My DH makes fun of me always on the boards, but when we went on our 2nd ever trip to WDW and 1st as a DVC member, he was thanking me for all of the wonderful info and tips I had learned from the boards. Yes, I to have been on every day for almost a year now and do not find me missing a day in the very near future. Thank you all for all of the wonderful info you have given to my family.

Totally relate to that. If anyone had told me three years ago that I would be on a board every day (usually several times a day) chatting about all things Disney, I'd have told them they were crazy. But here I am!

DIZBOUND said it.

Almost the same thing happened to me. DH would come in and say something like, "Oh, you're DISing again!?" But on our last trip earlier this month (also our first as DVC members), he was really impressed with all the knowledge I'd accumulated from participating in the boards. In fact, with a certain amount of pride he'd tell CMs and other visitors that I was his Disney expert :thumbsup2 .

I think you have to put our "little" obsession under the mostly useful and harmless category. Hey, instead we could be out there backing up sewers, reversing street signs, and stealing everyone's left shoe. ;)

The DIS is a great escape from the "real world." If I can't be at Disney at least I'm reading about it!! ;)

Now, all of you who are sick or had surgery...Get Well Soon!! :)

This is where I go to get my "normal" fix. I mean I get on the Dis boards and read about how everyone loves Disney and it just seems normal to me. I have four trips scheduled for this year to WDW (that's the most I've ever taken in one year) and I can't wait for my first trip to start! Since buying into DVC my DH and I just look at those who roll their eyes at our "adoration" (not addiction) of everything Disney and say "hey, we're doing what we love". We're empty nesters now (well, we will be in a few months) and our boys just laugh at us ... gee, I hope it's a good laugh and not a "they've gone off the deep end" kind of laugh ....

Anyway, I had the opportunity to design my scrapbook room now that oldest DS moved out and took the bed that was in our guest room ... now my scrap room. DH did NOT like the colors I first choose so I went with the safe ones ... yellow, red and black ... very Disney. It turned out wonderful and it is just such a cheerful place to be. Well, of course it is cause it's Disney.

No, we're not addicted or obsessed ... we just know what's fun, relaxing and entertaining! :cloud9:

P.S. Wishing you a speedy recovery Diane! pixiedust:

Ditto! When I wake up in the morning, I rush to see what's new on here- if I go out, I have to check the DISboards as soon as I come home! It IS crazy, but I am bleeding Mickey and I love it! I drank the kool-aid, and there is no turning back. I feel so much better knowing I'm not the only one! This is pretty much the only place I can connect with people who love the mouse as much as me, and I truly enjoy getting to "talk" to everyone around the world about DISNEY.

I'm relatively new to this and it took me a while to catch on to the Abbr. and on how to research things that interest me personally. I, too, now log on every day and during my lunch hour or when I have a little spare time I chat or sometimes just read what fellow Disney Lover's have to say.

I've been going to Disney since it opened and became a DVC Member in 2000 and I love the input, suggestions and the sharing of vacation experiences. I work all year long to earn a vacation and until it's my time to go, I love reading about someone elses memories in the making.

Over the last few months, I've enjoyed the threads from so many of you and I'de like to thank you all.

How neat that your dd was born on your anniversary! That's our anniversary as well! We were at SSR celebrating it June 28, 2006. We're coming up on 22 years this June. I wish you and your family as many years of Disney magic!

I enjoyed reading your musings. I've often wondered what it is about Walt's creations and his legacy that are so much more magical than the rest of the world. And why only some people "get it". And I worry that those in charge of the corporation today don't have nearly the same qualities that Walt did. But coming here always restores my faith, because even with the realistic views and sometimes negative posts, I think most of the people here share that "it", whatever it is that Walt had, a kind of "anything is possible" kind of philosophy, and that gives this place a draw that's almost as strong as DLR or WDW.

Me too! Me too! Me too!

First of all, I wish a speedy recovery to all of you who need it.

Second, I'm another one who is addicted. DH thinks I'm a little nuts, and he doesn't even know how much time I really spend on here getting my fix.:rotfl: I don't know what I ever did before I found these boards. Cleaned house and took care of the kids I guess. There's a lot of monotony to being a SAHM with 2 small children. (Of course, I wouldn't trade it for anything, but still a lot of tedious stuff.) Thinking about and planning the next trip (or 2) and visiting the boards lifts my spirits. Love, love, love my DVC! So thanks to all you fellow DISers who help me out with your wit, wisdom, and insight. You're the best!
